Dotson’s Note: Just over two hundred-six years later, debate still continues over whether one of the famous explorers committed suicide or was murdered. Also the continuing question: Did the Lewis & Clark expedition really matter? I have always had a personal interest in the Lewis & Clark saga because on August 23, 1921 Golvia E. Clark wed Dotson G. Lewis. Eight years later, I was the first born to this union. Many titled this wedding, “The New Lewis-Clark Expedition.” My dad was very reluctant to discuss the first “Lewis & Clark Expedition.” I believe his reluctance was because of the many stories that abound regarding Meriwether’s exploits. These tales mainly have to do with his relations with many Indian maidens. The

Meriwether Lewis Lewis, the consummate adventurer, suddenly found himself stuck in a desk job.

“At the end of his life he was a horrible drunk, terribly depressed, who could never even finish his [expedition] journals,” says Paul Douglas Newman, a professor of history who teaches “Lewis and Clark and The Early American Republic” at the University of Pittsburgh. An American icon, Lewis was also a human being, and the expedition “was the pinnacle of Lewis’s life,” Newman says. “He came back and he just could not readjust. On the mission it was ‘how do we stay alive and collect information?’

Now Lewis’s descendants and some scholars are campaigning to exhume his body, which is buried on national park land not far from Hohenwald, Tenn.

“This controversy has existed since his death,” says Tom McSwain, Lewis’s great-greatgreat-great nephew who helped start a Web site, “Solve the Mystery,” that lays out family members’ point of view. “When there’s so much uncertainty and doubt, we must have more evidence. History is about finding the truth,” he adds. The National Park Service is currently reviewing the exhumation request.

The intrigue surrounding the famous explorer’s untimely death has spawned a cottage industry of books and articles, with experts from a variety of fields, including forensics and mental health weighing in. Scholars have reconstructed lunar cycles to prove that the innkeeper’s wife couldn’t have seen what she said she saw that moonless night. Black powder pistols have been test-fired, forgeries claimed, and mitochondrial DNA extracted from living relatives. Yet even now, precious little is known about the events of October 10, 1809, after Lewis, armed with several pistols, a rifle and a tomahawk, stopped at a log cabin lodging house known as Grinder’s Stand.

He and Clark had finished their expedition three years earlier; Lewis, who was by then a governor of the large swath of land that constituted the Upper Louisiana Territory, was on his way to Washington, D.C. to settle financial matters. By some accounts, Lewis arrived at the inn with servants; by others, he arrived alone. That night, Mrs. Grinder, the innkeeper’s wife, heard several shots. She later said she saw a wounded Lewis crawling around, begging for water, but was too afraid to help him. He died, apparently of bullet wounds to the head and abdomen, shortly before sunrise the next day. One of his traveling companions, who arrived later, buried him nearby.

His friends assumed it was suicide. Before he left St. Louis, Lewis had given several associates the power to distribute his possessions in the event of his death; while traveling, he composed a will. Lewis had reportedly attempted to take his own life several times a few weeks earlier and was known to suffer from what Jefferson called “sensible depressions of mind.” Clark had also observed his companion’s melancholy states. “I fear the weight of his mind has overcome him,” he wrote after receiving word of Lewis’s fate.

At the time of his death, Lewis’s depressive tendencies were compounded by other problems: he was having financial troubles and likely suffered from alcoholism and other illnesses, possibly syphilis or malaria, the latter of which was known to cause bouts of dementia.

Surprisingly, he may also have felt like something of a failure. Though the expedition had traversed thousands of miles of wilderness with few casualties, Lewis and Clark did not find the Northwest Passage to the Pacific, the mission’s primary goal; the system of trading posts that they’d established began to fall apart before the explorers returned home. And now

Interestingly, John Guice, one of the most prominent critics of the suicide theory, uses a very different astronaut comparison. Lewis was indeed “like a man coming back from the moon,” Guice notes. But rather than feeling alienated, he would have been busy enjoying a level of Buzz Aldrin-like celebrity. “He had so much to live for,” says Guice, professor emeritus of history at The University of Southern Mississippi.

“This was the apex of a hero’s career. He was the governor of a huge territory. There were songs and poems written about him. This wasn’t just anybody who kicked the bucket.” Besides, how could an expert marksman botch his own suicide and be forced to shoot himself twice?

Why Lewis and Clark Matter Lewis and Clark were not actually the first white men to cross the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific north of Mexico. (Scottish fur trader Alexander Mackenzie crossed Canada a decade earlier.) Nor did they visit places not already seen and mapped by generations of native people.

It could even be said that Lewis and Clark began the American invasion of the West, which aimed at making it safe for cows, corn and capital at the expense of bison, prairie grasses and cultures not fitting the expansionist agenda.

If one wanted to be hard edged, one could even make a case that the Lewis and Clark story is a mainstay of the same shelf-worn narrative that glorifies and justifies the American conquest and dispossession of the North America natives.

On the other hand, traditional textbook history often portrays Lewis and Clark as the vanguard of America’s triumphant westward expansion, a movement that brought civilization and progress to a savage wilderness. In choosing just one side of the “argument,” it is feared that we may miss the underlying significance of the Lewis and Clark story and the chance to connect these early explorers to the larger and richer stories of our past.

Dotson’s Other Note: I have been told that the red hair (with which I was born), was handed down to me by Meriwether. Until I started doing research for these articles, I had never heard of Tom McSwain. I guess it’s time for me to get with it and find out for sure about the descendants of that old rascal Meriwether Lewis Esq. Thanks to the many of you who have responded to my articles. STATE Texas High School Aerospace Scholars

November 3, 2015 Constitutional Amendment Election Ballot Language and Explanations

This year marks the annual Texas High School Aerospace Scholars project as a joint initiation between the state of Texas and NASA. This great program is available to receive nominations for eligible high school juniors. This project is also eligible for those in the home school community as well. I hope that through this article we can let the whole community know about this fantastic learning experience. Getting involved is fast and easy.

The student must simply first apply online.

Though this is a preliminary step, it is important that the applications get sent in on time before the process closes. Once this happens, the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) will then go through and review those applicants. As they process this information, they will then send legislators a list of students who have applied in the legislators’ respective districts.

The Texas High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program gives students a great opportunity to be introduced to a variety of science and math skills. This project is a twophase learning opportunity for those students who have been nominated and can participate.

The first phase is comprised of an engaging online experience where the students will learn a variety of things about space. This wide-ranging program should help the students that participate with building better skills in critical thinking, creativity, productivity, communication, selfdirection and accountability. Overall, this competitive experience will be an in-depth and engaging understanding of past, present and even the future of space exploration.

After a student successfully completes the first phase of this project, they will then be eligible to qualify for phase two. The second phase is hosted by the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, and will span over the course of six days during the summer, at no cost to the student. Over the past several years of this program’s existence, there have been a number of positive impacts to students. Some of these students have obtained degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This great program can really work to help build a strong educational foundation for those students who are interested in space and space exploration. To date, thousands of students have participated in the program across the state.

“The constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $15,000 to $25,000, providing for a reduction of the limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for those purposes on the homestead of an elderly or disabled person to reflect the increased exemption amount, authorizing the legislature to prohibit a political subdivision that has adopted an optional residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation from reducing the amount of or repealing the exemption, and prohibiting the enactment of a law that imposes a transfer tax on a transaction that conveys fee simple title to real property.”

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to permit professional sports team charitable foundations to conduct charitable raffles.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State SJR 1 – Current law provides an exemption of $15,000 from the ad valorem taxation for public school purposes of a residence homestead. The proposed amendment would increase this exemption to $25,000, starting in the tax year beginning January 1, 2015. In order to reflect the increased exemption on the homestead of a person 65 years of age or older or a disabled person, the proposed amendment would provide a reduction to the current limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes. The proposed amendment would protect school districts from all or part of the revenue loss by authorizing an appropriation of funds according to formulas set by the legislature.

In addition, the proposed amendment would authorize the legislature to prohibit a political subdivision from reducing or repealing a homestead exemption adopted by the political subdivision. Finally, the proposed amendment would prohibit the imposition of a tax on the conveyance of real property, but would not prohibit the imposition of a business tax measured by business activity, a tax on the production of minerals, a tax on the issuance of title insurance, or a change in the rate of a tax in existence on January 1, 2016.

Proposition 2 – HJR 75 “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran who died before the law authorizing a residence homestead exemption for such a veteran took effect.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State HJR 75 – In 2011, voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow a surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran an exemption from ad valorem taxation from all or part of the market value on the disabled veteran’s residence homestead, as long as the surviving spouse had not remarried.

The amendment did not apply to surviving spouses of veterans who died before 2011.

This amendment would extend the exemption in such cases. The proposed amendment would apply only to ad valorem taxes imposed for a tax year beginning on or after January 1, 2016.

Proposition 3 – SJR 52 “The constitutional amendment repealing the requirement that state officers elected by voters statewide reside in the state capital.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State SJR 52 proposes a constitutional amendment to repeal the requirement for the Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Commissioner of the General Land Office, the Attorney General, and any other officers elected statewide to reside in Austin, Texas, the state capital. Under current law, these statewide elected officers are required to reside in the capital of the State of Texas while in office. This amendment would not apply to the residency requirement for the Governor.

“The constitutional amendment to authorize counties with a population of 7,500 or less to perform private road construction and maintenance.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State SJR 17 proposes a constitutional amendment which would increase from 5,000 to 7,500 the maximum total population threshold of a county that is allowed to construct and maintain private roads as long as the county imposes a reasonable charge for the work.

Proposition 6 – SJR 22 “The constitutional amendment recognizing the right of the people to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife subject to laws that promote wildlife conservation.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State SJR 22 proposes a constitutional amendment that would add the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife, including by use of traditional methods, in the Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution. This right would be subject to laws and regulations intended to conserve and manage wildlife and to preserve the future of hunting and fishing. The proposed amendment would establish hunting and fishing as the preferred method of managing and controlling wildlife in Texas. The proposed amendment is not intended to affect any law or provision related to trespass, property rights or eminent domain, and would not prevent the legislature from authorizing a municipality to regulate the discharge of a firearm in a populated area in the interest of safety.

Proposition 7 – SJR 5 “The constitutional amendment dedicating certain sales and use tax revenue and motor vehicle sales, use, and rental tax revenue to the state highway fund to provide funding for non-tolled roads and the reduction of certain transportation-related debt.”

Explanation by the Texas Secretary of State SJR 5 proposes a constitutional amendment to dedicate a portion of revenues from (1) the state sales and use tax, and (2) the tax imposed on the sale, use, or rental of a motor vehicle, to the State Highway Fund (SHF). Under current law, these funds would be deposited to the General Revenue Fund. Money deposited to the SHF is intended to be used only to construct, maintain, or acquire rights-of-way for public roadways other than toll roads; or to repay certain transportation-related debt.



The laws passed under this authority may provide that the professional sports team charitable foundation may use proceeds from such charitable raffles to pay reasonable advertising, promotional, and administrative expenses. Any law enacted by this provision only applies to entities defined as professional sports team charitable foundations on January 1, 2016. Additionally, any law enacted by this provision may only allow charitable raffles to be conducted at games hosted at the home venue of the professional sports team associated with a professional sports team charitable foundation.



Dunk Your Junk Ditch that stuff that has been piling up.

In an annual effort for “Make A Difference Day”, Port Aransas residents are encouraged to clean up property and get rid of “junk” at no charge.

From 9am to noon on Saturday, Oct. 31, residents may take stuff to the City Collection Station at the end of Ross Avenue.

Dunk Your Junk is held in spring and fall; and is sponsored by the City of Port Aransas, Republic Services and Keep Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB).

No commercial material or hazardous waste will be accepted.

KPAB is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on litter prevention, beautification, and waste reduction.

Its mission is to promote public interest in creating a cleaner, more beautiful Port Aransas through volunteerism and education.

Keep Port Aransas Beautiful is an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Texas Beautiful and a member of the Port A Chamber of Commerce.

Lampwork Demonstration Come see a free demonstration of Lampwork (bead making) scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Breathing the air near red tides or swimming in red tides may cause irritation. The eye and throat irritation occurs most often when the red tide is in rough surf. There is little or no irritation when surf conditions are calm.

It's almost impossible to say exactly where the red tide is at any given moment, because blooms constantly move around due to winds and tides. But, the Red Tide Rangers, a dedicated volunteer group, monitor South Padre Island coastal waters for the presence of harmful algae blooms, including the red tide.

They are trained to monitor coastal waters daily, checking for algae presence and amount, fish kills and other indicators, then reporting this information to state and federal agencies. Here’s a shout out to these citizen scientists for keeping tabs on our coast!

Small town choir – big town voices! So it was last week at the Seashore Middle School when under the direction of Music Teacher Rocio Skinner, the 5th and 6th grade music classes treated a large audience to Songs From Wicked.

Typically, music from shows like that requires fine voices for long solos as well as skilled back-up choir voices. They did not disappoint as featured soloists Raquel Lavastida, Isabella Burgess, Victoria Boles, Alyssa Diaz, and Caroline SchexnailderHuffman took turns demonstrating their talents.

Proud parents filled the seats in the SMA gymnasium, appreciating the solos and the choir voices, while snapping photographs of their child. Everybody left rather pleased with some humming one of the tunes that they had just heard.

SMA Choir Director Rocio Skinner commented on the choice of Wicked, “I chose Wicked because I thought it would be a good introduction to what Broadway Musicals are today. The students were especially interested in the story line of the good and bad witches so it helped them connect with the music.”

It was a wild, wet and windy weekend with widespread weather warnings abound.

(How’s that for alliteration?) This storm was a weird one. It seemingly came at us from all directions. Coming from the flatlands of West Texas, I appreciate a good storm. They cancelled the Harvest Moon Regatta but still had the rum party with Jerry Diaz and Hanna’s Reef. Some of the people in Galveston that were supposed to race but couldn’t because of the storm, actually drove to Port A for the party under the pavilion. That’s some dedicated rum drinkers there. And the giant rain that was supposed to happen on Saturday, turned into just a good drenching, but it caused some of the outdoor venues like Shorty’s and the Back Porch to cancel their shows. Consequently, it was a pretty quiet night on the island. Giggity’s was the only venue that powered through with shows every night. Mike Milligan (Austin, TX) drove the whole way from Austin in the rain to play on Friday and Ruben Limas came from Corpus to play on Saturday. It was pretty soggy on Saturday but the PA Art About also persevered.

There were full houses at every stop I made. By Monday, the skies cleared and we had the most beautiful day I’ve seen since early spring. The Open Jam at Giggity’s turned out great. The guys from Picklefish (Roy Hollingshead and

Justin Estes) brought a friend with them from Puerto Vallarta, Tommy Proctor, who was a monster on guitar. He fronts a band there called Los Chuyz and wants to come play here in the summer. It turns out that he played with Joe King Carrasco, who also lives in Vallarta, for many years.

On Friday, the sweet, sweet voice of Tessy Lou Williams will grace the Back Porch stage and our favorite folky Okie, Joe Mack (Tahlequah, OK) will bring his wild and zany self to Shorty’s. We haven’t seen Joe Mack for a while but in the past he’s showed up with such Okie dignitary as Carter Sampson, Thomas Trapp and Sky Smeed. This time’s he’s coming solo and that means we’ll probably get a dose of

On Halloween night Shorty’s will host the Dust Devil’s 13th annual Coastal Bender this year. The Dust Devils are fronted by two of Texas’ most talented performing songwriters: Kevin Higgins and Barbara Malteze. Kevin and Barbara are a couple (literally) from Central Texas who have a pretty wild fan base called Storm Chasers. In past years this event has been held at the Back Porch and I’ve been witness to some of them. I will attest, these followers come to party. I remember one year when they had the dance floor full even before the music started. And being that this year the Bender falls on Halloween, this could be epic.

The folks over at Shorty’s assure me that the porch will be weather proofed and they are ready, rain or shine.

Over at the Back Porch they will be having a costume contest for cash prizes. The big horn

band from Corpus, Myndfield will be laying down their fat old school R&B tunes. There will be no cover charge and the contest will be at 10:00. The big DO NOT MISS show this Halloween is without a doubt over at Giggity’s with the King of Tex-Mex, Joe King Carrasco.

I could easily write a book here about Joe King, and somebody probably should. I’ve followed him since the 80’s when he used to rock the punk clubs of Austin (called New Wave back then but re-defined by Joe as Nuevo Wavo).

Raul’s was the usual haunt. I once saw Joe play in front of thousands of people at Auditorium Shores and did a stage dive into the audience, where they body surfed him above their heads all the way to Riverside Drive and back all the time playing his guitar. It was at Doug Sahm’s insistence in the early 2000’s that I book him at the Laboratory in S.A. I eventually became friends with his family up in Oregon and would take a bullet for any of them. Joe is a not only a talented musician and songwriter but also an actor. His discography is as long as my arm and he’s been interviewed by Rolling Stone Magazine and appeared on Saturday Night Live. His hit, Party Party Weekend was picked up by MTV and was on regular rotation back when they actually played music videos. Joe is a wild and encompassing showman and I expect this one at Giggity’s to be a wild one. They will be having a costume contest for big cash prizes and the bands (Selfie is opening) will do the judging. There’s no cover and costumes are expected. Be safe out there! ♫ ♪ And, that’s the truth ♫ ♪
