STATE Educational Institutions Offer Summer Camps And Other Opportunities To Learn

The summer has begun, and continuing education opportunities are available from a variety of public institutions in our area.

With local schools, colleges, and other academic institutions winding down their normal class schedules, some offer continuing education courses for the public, along with their standard summer classes for students. Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), Del Mar College and the University of Texas – Marine Science Institute (UT-MSI) each has a variety of educational courses available for young people and the general public. The Texas State Aquarium, another important educational institution, offers engaging camps and workshops as well.

Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi offers both online and classroom education, as well as science-based camps for high school students.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mechanics) Summer Institute will focus on underwater robotics. The Institute, which will last from June 20th through June 26th, offers teenagers the chance to learn about and interact with the Nautilus, an underwater research and exploration vessel that is currently at sea (currently in the Galapagos Islands). Students will learn about navigation and the science behind such research missions and underwater technology. On July 27th – July 31st, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi will also host an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Summer Institute for the first time for area high school students. You can access options to advance your career, fulfill training requirements for licensed degrees, or simply learn a new skill for fun or enrichment. All of these courses can be found here: http://outreach.tamucc. edu/elearning/ Last, the TAMU-CC outdoors courses instruct registrants on how to participate in birding, one of the biggest tourism draws in the country; kayaking safely around marshes, lakes and the bay; and fly-fishing techniques in the springtime.

Del Mar College offers similar opportunities at the Career & Community Education Department. There, people can take affordable classes to enhance their skills or further their careers. Del Mar College has educational

programs that focus on health care, workforce training, real estate, computer training, and education for seniors. The college offers an array of camps in addition to those courses.

Kids Camp meets Mondays through Thursdays, and allows children in our area to learn math, guitar, Spanish, and other interesting educational avenues that they may not have had time for in the standard school year. Del Mar College also sports an exciting Youth Aquatics Program, a Choir Camp, and many more great learning activities are available. Children can learn the ins and outs of birding at “Birding 101 for Kids” in the month of June. Tours of the institute’s Wetlands Education Center occur Tuesday and Thursday mornings. A schedule is forthcoming on the Summer Marine Science Film Series, and other information can be found here: https://utmsi.utexas.edu/visit/publicprograms#sea-stories The Texas State Aquarium, also a key institution in our area, offers Sea Camp on a weekly basis.

There, students from pre-kindergarten age to juniors in high school have the chance to observe marine life and science. This year focuses on Sharks, Oceanography and Bioinspiration.

The camps become more advanced as the ages go along, with the pre-kindergarten children learning basic things about sharks and visiting the Aquarium’s Splash Camp, and high school teens exploring science-based careers and overnight events. Island Political Action Committee Holds Annual Gathering

The Island United Political Action Committee held its regular annual meeting last week and elected new officers and began plans for the next round of city elections.

In attendance were District 32 State Representative Todd Hunter, Mayor Nelda Martinez, both of whom also attended the Tuesday meeting of the Island Strategic Action Committee at the same location at Comfort Suites on Windward Drive, District 4 City Councilwoman Colleen McIntyre; and AtLarge Council members Mark Scott and Lillian Riojas. Mayor Martinez and the other three council members (along with At-Large Council member Chad Magill who did not attend) were endorsed by IUPAC members in the past city elections.

The IUPAC was formed in 2008 to organize Island voters behind candidates in non-partisan city races who are endorsed by a vote of the

full membership of the organization, which consists of every registered voter on The Island.

The IUPAC has been instrumental in helping Island-friendly office holders win elections as the voting precincts on The Island regularly have the highest turnout rates of any in Nueces County. There are now about 6300 registered voters on The Island and in each city race since the beginning of the IUPAC The Island has seen between 2200 and 2500 voters cast ballots.

In her last race for Mayor Martinez avoided a runoff by less than three percent of the vote with Island votes in sufficient numbers to provide the margin for a victory without the need for a second election.

We encourage those not registered to do so, and those who are registered to get involved with the IUPAC as the next city election season rolls around.

ARK – Animal Rehabilitation Keep.

Located in Port Aransas the ARK is affiliate with the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Center. They handle the rehabilitation of most species of wildlife in the area with an emphasis on marine animals.

Police are looking for this man who seems to have plenty of moxy but a poor choice in jewelry after he allegedly stole a diamond ring from the Wal-Mart Store located at 3829 Interstate 69 Access Road.

The white male suspect wearing black shorts, tennis shoes, a red t-shirt and a ball cap walked into the store and asked an employee if he could see a ring from the display case. When the employee handed the man the ring to look at, he ran out of the store with the merchandise.

He was last seen leaving the parking lot in an older model tan Chevrolet suburban. The store valued the ring at $195.

Social Security overpaid disability beneficiaries by nearly $17 billion over

Since I have been giving you the inside facts on the VA, I believe it is only fair to give you the same type of facts about the SSA. So here goes: The Associated Press is headlining the story of the Social Security Administration overpayment of billions (of $) during the past decade.

AP is reporting: “Social Security overpaid disability beneficiaries by nearly $17 billion over the past decade, a government watchdog said Friday, raising alarms about the massive program just as it approaches the brink of insolvency.”

The Facts of the Matter Many payments went to people who earned too much money to qualify for benefits, or to those no longer disabled. Payments also went to people who had died or were in prison.

In all, nearly half of the 9 million people receiving disability payments were overpaid, according to the results of a 10-year study by the Social Security Administration’s inspector general.

In an unrelated incident of mind numbness a 47 year-old man took a long drive on a short road Sunday night when Corpus Christi Police were called to investigate a single vehicle crash at the dead end of Ennis Joslin Road.

The crash investigation revealed that a 2009 Ford truck, driven by the 47 year old man, failed to negotiate a turn onto Williams Drive, and it struck a dead end sign, traveled into a field, and then struck the only dumpster in sight. The crash caused the truck to catch on fire and it was fully engulfed.

After an investigation, the driver was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Social Security was able to recoup about $8.1 billion, but it often took years to get the money back, the study said.

“Every dollar misallocated is a dollar lost for those who truly need it most,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. “Today’s report shows the inability of the Social Security Administration to properly safeguard payments, which has no doubt contributed to speeding the fund toward exhaustion.”

The trust fund that supports Social Security’s disability program is projected to run out of money late next year, triggering automatic benefit cuts, unless Congress acts. The looming deadline has lawmakers feuding over a solution that may have to come in the heat of a presidential election.

The agency did not respond to a request for comment Friday. In a written response included in the study, the agency said it was required to pay some people who were no longer disabled while they appealed their cases.

The inspector general’s office examined a randomly selected sample of 1,532 people who were receiving either Social Security disability or Supplemental Security Income in October 2003. SSI is the disability program for the poor.

Auditors followed the group for 10 years, until February 2014. They determined that 45% of the beneficiaries were overpaid at some point during that period. The overpayments totaled $2.9 million, the study said.

They used the results to estimate that Social Security made a total of $16.8 billion in overpayments during the 10-year period.

The study concluded that “the agency could do more to prevent the most common overpayments.”

The ‘Heaven 11’: Gospel Music Expert Lists 11 Most Influential Black Gospel Songs June is African American Music Appreciation Month Robert F. Darden, professor in Baylor University’s department of journalism, public relations and new media, and former gospel music editor for Billboard Magazine, is leading a national movement to preserve the fastdisappearing legacy of African American sacred music on vinyl.

To celebrate African American Music Appreciation Month, Darden, who heads Baylor’s Black Gospel Music Restoration Project (BGMRP), has compiled the “Heaven 11” – a list of the 11 most influential black gospel songs.

“There is no way to quantify the ‘greatest’ gospel song of all time, but certain songs have been more influential than others through the years,” said Darden, who chose songs from the 1940s through the 1980s.

1. “Movin’ on Up (A Little Higher)” “The Queen of Gospel Mahalia Jackson’s first big hit, and one of the best-selling gospel songs of all time.”

2. “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” “Perhaps the best-known, most beloved of all gospel songs; written by Thomas Dorsey after the loss of his wife and infant child, it is still sung today at virtually African-American funeral service in the country.”

Baylor’s Black Gospel Music Restoration Project is the world’s largest initiative to identify, acquire, digitize, catalogue and someday make accessible the fast-disappearing legacy of African-American gospel music on vinyl, Darden said.

“Thousands of at-risk songs have been saved for future generations. The BGMRP is currently working with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., to provide the gospel music to the new museum,” he said.

The museum is scheduled to open on the National Mall in 2016.

largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.

Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to an individual and certain members of their family if they are “insured,” meaning that they worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes. Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.

When a person applies for either program, the SSA will collect medical and other information from the applicant and make a decision about whether or not they meet SSA’s definition of disability.

The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.

“Disability” under Social Security is based on your inability to work. You are considered disabled under Social Security rules if: • A person cannot do work that they did before; • SSA decides that the applicant cannot adjust to other work because of their medical condition(s); and • The disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.

This is a strict definition of disability. Social Security program rules assume that working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods of short-term disabilities, including workers’ compensation, insurance, savings and investments.

If an application has recently been denied, the Internet Appeal is a starting point to request a review of their decision about your eligibility for disability benefits.

If application is denied for: • Medical reasons, the applicant can complete and submit the required Appeal Request and Appeal Disability Report online. The disability report asks for updated information about the applicant’s medical condition and any treatment, tests or doctor visits since the decision was made.

• Non-medical reasons, the applicant should contact their local Social Security Office to request the review. In addition to meeting SSA’s definition of disability the applicant must have worked long enough--and recently enough--under Social Security to qualify for disability benefits.

Social Security work credits are based on total yearly wages or self-employment income. Up to four credits each year may be earned.

Social Security’s disability program has both short-term and long-term financial problems.

The amount needed for a credit changes from year to year. In 2015, for example, a person earns one credit for each $1,220 of wages or self-employment income. When you’ve earned $4,880, they have earned your four credits for the year.

Unless Congress acts, the trust fund that supports the disability program will run dry sometime during the final three months of 2016, according to projections by the trustees who oversee Social Security. At that point, the program will collect only enough payroll taxes to pay 81% of benefits.

The number of work credits needed to qualify for disability benefits depends on the age when the applicant becomes disabled. Generally, 40 credits are needed, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year when the applicant become disabled. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

That would trigger an automatic 19% cut in benefit payments. The average monthly payment for a disabled worker is $1,165, or about $14,000 a year.

It is important to know, that whatever the age, a person must have earned the required number of work credits within a certain period ending with the time the applicant became disabled. If a person qualifies now, but stops working under Social Security, they may not continue to meet the disability work requirement in the future.

An easy fix is available. Congress could redirect payroll tax revenue from Social Security’s much larger retirement program, as lawmakers have done before. Some members of Congress are balking, saying they want to address the program’s long-term finances.

About 11 million disabled workers, children and spouses currently receive Social Security disability benefits. About 8.3 million people receive Supplemental Security Income, which is funded separately, through the government’s general revenues.

After the Flood Preventing Post-Flooding Mold at Home: Clean It, Dry It or Discard It

Recovery specialists have some sound advice for Texans whose homes and property took on floodwaters: Protect your family’s health and your own by treating or discarding mold- and mildew-infected items.

Health experts urge those who find mold to act fast. Cleaning mold quickly and properly is essential for a healthy home, especially for people who suffer from allergies and asthma, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Mold and mildew can start growing within 24 hours after a flood, and can lurk throughout a home, from the attic to the basement and crawl spaces. The best defense is to clean, dry or, as a last resort, discard moldy items.

Although it can be hard to get rid of a favorite chair, a child’s doll or any other precious treasure to safeguard the well-being of your loved ones, a top-to-bottom home cleanup is your best defense, according to the experts.

Many materials are prone to developing mold if they remain damp or wet for too long. Start a post-flood cleanup by sorting all items exposed to floodwaters: • Wood and upholstered furniture, and other porous materials can trap mold and may need to be discarded.

• Carpeting presents a problem because drying it does not remove mold spores.

Carpets with mold and mildew should be removed.

• However, glass, plastic and metal objects and other items made of hardened or nonporous materials can often be cleaned, disinfected and reused.

All flood-dampened surfaces should be cleaned, disinfected and dried as soon as possible. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and effective cleanup: • Open windows for ventilation and wear rubber gloves and eye protection when cleaning. Consider using a mask rated N-95 or higher if heavy concentrations of mold are present.

• Use a non-ammonia soap or detergent to clean all areas and washable items that came in contact with floodwaters.

• Mix 1-1/2 cups of household bleach in one gallon of water and thoroughly rinse and disinfect the area. Never mix bleach with ammonia as the fumes are toxic.

• Cleaned areas can take several days to dry thoroughly. The use of heat, fans and dehumidifiers can speed up the drying process.

• Check out all odors. It’s possible for mold to hide in the walls or behind wall coverings.

Find all mold sources and clean them properly.

Watch Out for Flood Damaged Used Cars

Due to the recent floods statewide, numerous vehicles have been impacted by floodwaters.

Insurance claims will typically brand the title as salvage so buyers are aware the vehicle has been deemed damaged. These vehicles can be repaired, however in most cases they are sold for parts only or scrapped all together. The title branding of SALVAGE will appear on a title that meets those criteria.

On the other hand roughly 1 out of 4 vehicles in Texas are not insured. These vehicles are typically not branded as a loss, as they do not have a mechanism to determine their amount of damage, and thus these vehicles find their way back on the road to unsuspecting buyers, typically through bogus mechanics and storage liens, or from unscrupulous sellers who don’t disclose the condition of the vehicle they are selling.

Our office will be aggressively looking for these transactions over the coming months, but we can’t stop all of them. I highly encourage all buyers of used cars over the coming year to either buy from a reputable dealer, and/or take to a local mechanic who can do a quick inspection for you prior to purchase. Texas is buyers beware state, so this simple step can save you thousands in unexpected repairs and inconveniences, not to mention prevent you from being stuck with a lemon you can’t get rid of.

• Remove and discard all materials that can’t be cleaned, such as wallboard, fiberglass and cellulose areas. Then clean the wall studs where wallboard has been removed, and allow the area to dry thoroughly before replacing the wallboard.

By Jarrod Wise Better Business Bureau Last month, severe storms and flash flooding affected several areas of Central Texas. Many of those affected are now dealing with a common result of water damage: mold. Mold is a factor consumers may not immediately consider, but one that can cause serious structure damage and health problems if it is not taken care of.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), mold reproduces by releasing tiny spores that float through the air, invisible to the naked eye. It is able to grow anywhere a food source, oxygen and moisture are present, and is especially prevalent after extensive rain or flooding. Excess moisture in homes and businesses due to flooding is a cause for concern because it provides breeding conditions for mold.

It is important to act quickly when cleaning and repairing a home or business after flooding because the longer it grows, the more damage it can cause. Also, remember that if you clean up the mold but don’t fix the water problem, the mold will most likely come back.

Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin offers the following advice if you think you may have mold: • Inspect for moisture problems and document results. According to the EPA, consumers should inspect the interior and exterior of the building, whether it is a business or home. Look for evidence of moisture and mold problems like water damage or stains on the walls or ceilings, foundation cracks that leak water and peeling paint. Also, check for visible mold growth, wet or damp spots and a musty odor.

• Discard items with visible signs of mold growth. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to salvage items with mold growth (sofas, mattresses, carpeting, towels, etc.), especially if they have been wet for more than 48 hours and not properly dried. Solid wood furniture can be saved if surface cleaning removes any signs of mold. When in doubt, throw it out!

• Know your risks and possible side effects.

There are several health risks associated with mold and mold growth. Many people may experience allergic reactions and other respiratory issues when mold is present.

Exposure to mold can cause symptoms such as eye irritation, wheezing and skin irritation. Extreme reactions may include

fever and shortness of breath. Mold can also trigger asthma episodes.

• Know what types of molds exist. While there are many classifications of mold, aspergillus mold is the most common household mold, found in almost any home or office, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They are the most studied molds in medical research, and are associated with numerous respiratory disorders. Stachybotrys molds grow on material such as wood, paper and cardboard.

Commonly called “black mold,” this mold requires very wet or high, humid conditions for days or weeks in order to grow.

• Be Proactive. To control mold growth, control moisture. If you notice a leak in your shower faucet or sink, repair it immediately to avoid the ideal habitat for mold. Clean and dry any wet or damp surfaces within 24 to 48 hours. Vent bathrooms, kitchens and other moisture-generating sources to reduce indoor humidity and prevent mold growth.

If you do have mold, BBB advises: • Do your research before hiring a mold remediation business or contractor. In 2014, BBB received several consumer complaints nationwide against Mold and Mildew Inspection/Removal/Remediation services.

Most complaints reported problems with service, repair and billing. Ask for referrals from friends and family and make sure the contractor has experience cleaning up mold.

• Compare prices and services. Get at least three estimates for any service you would like provided. All bids should be in writing and should provide a full description of the services to be provided and the materials to be used. Make sure the contract includes any verbal promises the contractor made and details on any guarantees.

• Plan the remediation before starting work.

Asses the size of the mold and/or moisture problem and the type of damaged materials before planning the remediation work. The remediation plan should include steps to fix the water or moisture problem and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Mold remediation may include temporary relocation of some or all of the building occupants, especially when dealing with aspergillus mold at a business location. If you have health concerns, consult a health professional before starting cleanup.

Much to See in This Large Non-Resort Metropolis

By Brent Rourk Founded by the Spanish in 1532 Guadalajara (or valley of stones) has become a large metropolitan area of Mexico, not conceded to be the second largest metro area in Mexico, behind Mexico City. Though not the typical resort associated with Mexico, Guadalajara is still nevertheless worth exploring. A bit of research prior to going will help ensure a more satisfying trip (http://allaboutguadalajara.com/)

The towns of Chapala and Ajicic are close enough to Guadalajara to consider a one day excursion offered by a number of local tour companies – leave the driving to them. Chapala, nesting on the shores of expansive Lake Chapala is beautiful with ideal climate year round. It has been for several years a destination for foreigners to retire.

In the City Moving quickly, as large cities do, Guadalajara is a buzz with commerce and transportation.

It has become a production hub of dozens of products, most recently shopping malls that are dotting the cityscape. Various neighborhoods have become centers for one type of product, so it is common to see blocks of just florists or mechanics, or household goods.

Trains easily cart travelers from Guadalajara to nearby towns or to Mexico City and beyond.

A train system and a mammoth bus system transport people within the city. Buses work great for folks who are exploring and enjoying an extended stay. Careful, because buses are popular and the interminable lines that wrap around parks and churches might be indelicately exasperating. But it is a certain way to meet locals, especially if you speak Spanish. Taxis are the best bet for tourists and are inexpensive, especially if you effectively negotiate a price prior to getting in the taxi.

Unlike destination resorts, that normally hire bilingual staffs, English is rarely spoken in the city. Spanish will be your friend and help open the rewards of Guadalajara. A few staff members in my hotel (Santiago de Compostela in the Historic Center) spoke a little English but most all speak Spanish only. Fortunately, my Spanish is good enough to get me around.

El Hombre de Fuego - The masterpiece mural of Orozco in the Hospicio Cabanas The Historical Center The best location for lodging I think is in the old town historical center because there are so many older buildings, plazas, parks, monuments, and restaurants to visit. Old cathedrals, government buildings, and a theatre are all worth exploring.

The historical area is accessible by foot or bus or quick taxi, especially if you are staying at one of the older and welcoming hotels that dot the area. My most recent stay was in that area with small restaurants and corner grocery stores offering great food and sufficient groceries to stock the room refrigerator (if you have one).

Hospicio Cabañas A tourist could spend two days walking around the historical center, enjoying the music, culture, and food along with the older art and architecture. A must see that most will miss has to be the Hospicio Cabañas (currently, a World Heritage Site – see http://whc.unesco.org/en/ list/815) located in a large plaza that connects to another 4 block long plaza. The Hospicio began taking orphans, homeless and unwanted children in 1803 and continued accepting, feeding, and schooling children until 1980. The

Neo-Gothic Cathedral in the Historical Center monumental neoclassic grounds also served as a hospital, especially to handicapped and chronic invalids.

It is a marvelous older set of buildings that draw thousands of tourists each week. In the 1930s perhaps the most famous Mexican painter and muralist, Jose Clemente Orozco painted 57 large and impressive murals on the walls and ceilings of the Hospicio. The most famous of Orozco’s work, the massive and striking El Hombre de Fuego (The Man of Fire) occupies a center spot in the Hospicio showing the submission of man to machine. All of Orozco’s works in the Hospicio principally reflect Mexican heritage, especially old temples, gods, and sacrifices.

The Hospicio grounds are every bit worth the small admission prices and the time. The architecture throughout the grounds is eyecatching, the murals unsurpassed, and the history moving.

Guadalajara and Local Attractions A recent trip to Guadalajara revealed a city of contrasts with some traditional culture mixed with middle class, emerging technology and industry, and home to the famous and festive Mariachi Music. The two nearby suburbs of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque are tourist draws, with Tonalá having market days on Thursdays and Sundays where hundreds of merchants sell their merchandise along the main city drag for many blocks on both sides of the streets. It is a very popular attraction for tourists and locals.

Tlaquqpaque being more of an upscale tourist attraction provides store fronts and a wide range of restaurants that offer a tantalizing array of Mexican dishes. Together these three cities form an attractive draw to travelers looking for new destinations.

My favorites were Aztec Soup, Tortilla Soup, Torta Ahogado, Chicken Mole, Enchiladas, Pollo Asado, and many of the sauces and salsas that characteristically take center table position.

Some of these salsas and sauces are delightfully (or is that frightfully) spicy. Try at your own risk. As peppers might vary in spiciness so will the daily salsas, even from the same restaurant.

If you simply cannot become addicted to the marvelous Mexican culinary offerings, then you are lucky. Guadalajara is pocked with McDonalds, Chiles, Dominos, 7-11s, and more.

I recommend trying the native food – but don’t drink the water. Enjoy the tasty Mexican brews that pair well with most Mexican fare.

Preparation Take you usual traveling medical kit with you, a fine camera, comfortable walking shoes, and low denomination bills. Check the exchange rate before you go. Banks offer the best exchange rate. No need to wear expensive jewelry there, and protect your wallets and purses as you do in all large metropolitan areas. As with any travel, advance research will better reveal the treasures of Guadalajara and where you might want to spend your time and money. You will also be able to know when the Mariachi Concerts are playing at the Theatre or when there is a local festival.

Guadalajara is a large and changing city where the contrasts of culture are easily evident to any open eye. It is rich in history and fun to explore. Flight is relatively reasonable as are hotel rates. Again, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of getting a nicer (bit older) hotel in the Historical Center. Be careful about traveling in June, July, August, and September because that is their rainy season, and you will likely be inundated while touring or walking.

Last week when I was in Guadalajara local weather experts were predicting the beginning of the rainy season this week. Best bets are March, April, May, and October.

Texas State Musicians named…

Jimmy Vaughan has been named the official Texas State Musician for 2015 and Joe Ely claims the title for 2016.

Candidates for Texas State Musician are nominated by the general public, after which a committee, composed of members appointed by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, makes the final selections. Other Texans who have received this honor in the past include Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Billy Gibbons, Shelley King and Dale Watson.

Patrice Pike put on an amazing performance at Giggity’s last Saturday

Joe Ely was named 2016 Texas’ State Musician.

Jimmy Vaughan is an Oak Cliff (Dallas) native who I first heard in Austin in the early 70’s with his band Storm that included other Dallas musicians Paul Ray, Doyle Bramhall and Alex Napier. Jimmy is the brother of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and the founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Joe Ely is a Lubbock native and a member of the Flatlanders with Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. In a statement Ely said, “I am humbled to be recognized in this manner by the state of my birth. Texas is filled with some of the most fascinating characters in the world.”

He has collaborated with the likes of Bruce Spingsteen, Linda Ronstadt and the Clash (he sings backup in the group’s 1982 hit Should I Stay or Should I Go.) He has earned a Grammy, a CMA and the Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance.

Ely is an old friend who I’ve known for many years, back in Lubbock and Austin. I remember giving him rides to play for tips on the drag in Austin. And, I used to go see him play at the storied Cotton Club in a cotton field on the Slaton highway in the 70’s. His sizzling band

Walt Wilkins and the Mistiqueros played the Black Marlin last Saturday

Our summer season kicked off with a bang last week. I saw many great shows. Last Saturday was pretty astonishing. Stevie Start (N. Padre, TX) played Shorty’s, Davin James (Spring, TX) played the Back Porch, Walt Wilkins (Austin, TX) played the Black Marlin and the marvelous Patrice Pike played Giggity’s.

Wow! Wilkins and his Mistequeros have their four part harmony down to a science. With the help of Bill Small and Jim “Daddy” Davis it just doesn’t get any sweeter… maybe the Everly Brothers. I really like what these guys at the Black Marlin are doing out there. It really is a pleasant setting for live music on a Saturday night. But the award this week goes to the Patrice Pike’s show at Giggity’s. That was pure artistry. Her dynamics set you up and knock you down. And her band is as spot on as any group of studio musicians I’ve seen. It was a thunderously remarkable performance. I can’t wait to see her again. I think I overheard something about another show in September.

I’ll keep you posted. I also want to give a shout out to both Tessie Lou Williams and Aloha Dave Maloney who gave us a couple of stellar performances. It was such a fun weekend. I’m still reeling from that Patrice Pike show.
