SMA Students Dress Up

By Brent Rourk Proudly parading the SMA hallways, scores of costume-clad students offered a preview of their Monster Ball and Trick or Treat costumes last Friday. Most of the costumes were colorful and creatively crafted, some of them completely disguising the student.

At least fifty percent of the students wore some kind of costume during the day with many of them posing as movie giants, literary figures, and cartoon classics.

Wonder Woman and The Joker previewed the paradox of the good and the bad while the three ‘far out’ attired hippie girls flashed peace signs reminiscent of the late 60s on Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco. Even the SMA staff got into the action, posing as characters from the popular ‘Where is Waldo’ series of books. The SLC staff also donned costumes, presenting themselves as literary characters.

Thirsting for more blood and gore during the SMA Monster Ball Dance, many students artistically painted their faces, borrowing heavily from vampire and ‘Day of the Dead’ themes. Also spotted gallivanting the SMA gymnasium were a Robin Hood like character, an angel, two Gumby figures, a walking Rubik’s Cube [very creative and cute], and two pinstripe suit mobsters. They all hit the streets trick or treating on Saturday evening and then became satiated with sugar in time for school on Monday. Another peaceful and costume-clad Halloween in the books.

Delta Force Death Signals Watershed for US Combat Role in Iraq

Combat does mean war doesn’t it? I believe that if we decide to engage in combat, we should fight to win. Unconditional surrender by the enemy is the only way to end a war. My thanks to Richard Sisk, a writer for Military. com, for many of the facts contained in the following article.

Since the Hawija raid, Carter has attempted to draw fine lines in defining combat to maintain consistency with the restrictions while at the same time expanding the U.S. mission to include more raids that could be classified as combat operations.

Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, 39, of Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N.C., was killed in action Oct. 22, while deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Two versions of what led to the death of Army Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler in a helicopter assault in Iraq have emerged with broad implications for future raids promised by Defense Secretary Ashton Carter against the Islamic State.

At issue was whether U.S. Special Operations units will plan from the outset to take on a direct combat role in raids conducted with local forces, or participate in an advisory role and only engage the enemy to protect themselves or others.

One account from the few details released publicly had it that Wheeler and his Delta Force unit were hanging back as advisers while Kurdish Peshmerga fighters began the assault on the outskirts of the northern town of Hawija to free hostages held by militants affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS. Wheeler and the other Americans then rushed forward as the Peshmerga began taking casualties, according to that account.

Another version had it that Wheeler’s unit was embedded with the “pesh” fighters and he was fatally wounded in a joint assault on the prison compound.

In supporting the first version of the Hawija raid, Col. Steve Warren, a spokesman for combined task force-Operation Inherent Resolve, said, “I know that the pesh forces were bottled up, receiving direct fire” as they attempted to breach the walls of the compound.

“Some members of the pesh were getting wounded, and this is what triggered the U S Army advisers to then begin to assist,” Warren said in a video briefing to the Pentagon on Wednesday from Baghdad. “And Sgt. Wheeler, in a display of heroism, was in the forefront of that.”

Warren said he could not confirm reports that Wheeler was wounded after blowing a hole in the wall of the compound and rushing through the gap. “I don’t know about the blowing the hole in the wall piece,” he said.

Without providing details, Carter said last week that Wheeler “ran to the sound of the guns.” In Senate testimony on Tuesday, Carter said, “Obviously, he was accompanying those forces, but when he saw they were running into trouble, he very heroically acted in a way that all of the reports suggest and spelled the difference between the success and failure of that important mission.”

A U.S. military source said that Wheeler and his Delta Force team had moved to the last covered and concealed position alongside Kurdish forces outside the ISIS compound.

When the assault began, the Delta elements and Kurdish forces simultaneously rushed forward and breached the compound at multiple entry points with explosive charges.

The blasts ripped openings into the compound, and gunfire erupted. Wheeler was shot seconds later and died while receiving medical treatment. Four Kurdish Peshmerga assaulters were wounded and 20 ISIS fighters were killed in the firefight.

Within minutes, assault teams were freeing prisoners as gunfire continued. “In a hostage rescue, it’s going really quick,” the source said.

“Once the breach is made, that’s it. It’s game on, you don’t look back. You are just running to get to the hostages.”

The Kurdish news service Rudaw released head-cam video of the Kurdish fighters freeing hostages inside the compound. Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, confirmed that the video was authentic.

On the video, American voices could occasionally be heard in the background. There has been speculation that Wheeler’s voice was among those in the background, but Davis said that Wheeler was wounded before what was shown in the head cam videos.

Critics have charged that the Hawija raid was an example of the “mission creep” surrounding the U.S. campaign against ISIS despite repeated statements that U.S. troops would not be involved in “boots on the ground” combat.

He rejected charges of mission creep while noting “Americans are flying combat missions, thousands of combat missions, over Syrian and Iraqi territory.”

“There are Americans involved in training and advising Iraqi security forces around the country,” Carter said, but “we do not have combat formations there the way we had once upon a time in Iraq, or the way we have had in years past in Afghanistan.” The potential for more raids of the type that freed the hostages “doesn’t represent a change in our strategy but it does represent a change in our approach to achieving it,” Carter said.

“It doesn’t represent assuming a combat role,” he said, but “when we find opportunities to do things that will effectively prosecute the campaign, we will do that. I’m determined that we continue to adapt to get results.”

Carter went further in outlining an expanded U.S. role in testimony on Tuesday before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He unveiled a “three ‘Rs” strategy -- meaning “Raqaa, Ramadi and Raids.” U.S. troops would work with local forces to take the ISIS capital of Raqaa in Syria and the flashpoint town of Ramadi in Iraq’s Anbar province, Carter said.

“The third and final ‘R’ is raids, signaling that we won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL (another term for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), or conducting such missions directly, whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground,” Carter said.

At his video briefing to the Pentagon on Wednesday, Col. Warren insisted “nothing has changed about our policy since the Hawija operation.” “You’ve heard the secretary speak, I think fairly extensively, about fine tuning and adjustment,” he said. “We’re going to continue our train-and-advise-and-equip missions. We are going to increase or step up some of our airstrikes against the enemy’s industrial base.”

“This is not a radical departure from what has happened,” Warren said. “We have sent people outside the wire before when the conditions warranted it.”

“And what the Secretary has said is we’re going to keep doing that and, we’ll keep a sharper eye out for more opportunities, but this is not a major shift, this is not anything radically different than what we’ve seen over the last year,” Warren said. From the sidelines, the Israelis warned that whatever course the U.S. takes will involve a long-term commitment in the Mideast.

At a joint press conference with Carter on Wednesday at the Pentagon, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said that a nearterm political settlement of the turmoil in Iraq and Syria was a pipedream. “It’s a long way, unfortunately, which will make the situation unstable” for the foreseeable future Ya’alon said. “Anyhow, it’s going to be the characteristic of the Middle East for the years to come -chronic instability, not just in Syria -- for a very, very long period of time. And I’m not sure for how long,” Ya’alon said.

STATE The Month Of November Helps To Recognize Our Veterans

The month of November serves as an occasion not just for our community, but also our nation to pay tribute and recognize the service of our men and women who have served in the armed forces. Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country and it is very important that we honor them for their invaluable service.

In Texas, we have a number of programs that seek to help and assist our current and former members of the military. These various programs are spread across different Texas state agencies that ultimately work to implement and administer them.

• Veterans Employment Services offers employment services to Texas veterans and helps employers find qualified veteran job applicants. The goal of these services is to match veteran job seekers with the best employment opportunities available.

According to a Texas state summary conducted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, our state is home to around 1.7 million veterans.

Many have chosen to stay in Texas or move to Texas from somewhere else due to the various positive programs that are in place to help assist our service members. Our state has a number of resources that are handled by a wide range of state agencies. Two primary agencies that we have set in place are the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) and the Veterans Land Board (VLB).

• Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance is a program that makes grants available to eligible charitable organizations, local government agencies, and Veterans Service Organizations that provide direct services to Texas veterans and their families.

The Texas Veterans Commission was established in 1927 and was originally designated as the State Service Office. It was originally tasked with assisting those veterans of the Indian wars, Spanish-American War, and World War I. The intention of creating the agency was to act as the state appointed advocate of the veterans in Texas. Today, the TVC works to try and help both current and former members of our military to secure the benefits they have rightfully earned through their service. According to their website (http:// www.tvc.texas.gov/), there are four program areas in which they can try and be of assistance: • Claims Representation and Counseling serves veterans, their dependents and survivors, in all matters pertaining to veterans’ disability benefits and rights. It is the designated agency of the state of Texas to represent the State and its veterans before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

• Veterans Education Program approves all programs for Chapter 30, 33, 35, 1606, and 1607 federal educational benefits. Through an approval process, the Texas Veterans Commission ensures that institutions and employers are in compliance with federal guidelines and are qualified to provide the type of training offered.

In addition to the TVC, another program involves the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB).

The VLB was created in 1946 with the mission of administering benefits that were exclusively for our Texas veterans. Some of the programs at the VLB seek to help our service members with obtaining low interest loans on land, homes, home improvements as well as home programs to help provide long-term care services for our Texas veterans. CHRISTMAS in November???

It is hard to believe that it is November and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. As we go through our daily lives it is always important to keep the spirit of Thanksgiving all year round. We are blessed and should be thankful to live in the greatest country in the world. I know it is a little early but Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family from me and my family.

Padre Balli and IB Magee Update If you have driven by the entrance of Padre Balli Park you have seen great progress. The entrance is coming along very nicely. Look for more work to be done on the remainder of the park soon. Bids are out and you should be seeing a great deal of work starting this year. IB Magee is also moving along and you can expect ground to be broken there next year. These are exciting times on North Padre Island and Port Aransas as millions of your tax dollars are being reinvested into your community to enhance the area and bring in more revenue for the county and for local businesses. These projects will be revenue generating projects. Even after the debt service is paid on these projects they will profitable.

Packery Channel Habitat Project We will also have an event sometime soon to introduce you to the habitat management project that Nueces County was fortunate enough to get a grant for. Keep your eyes open for the announcement soon there. You will be amazed when you see it. It will be a wonderful addition to our community.

County property with Kleberg County. I believe it will be a nice partnership with a lot of law enforcement eyes firmly on it. Nueces and Kleberg counties along with Border Patrol and others will be working hand in hand to ensure that things quiet down there significantly.

There will be warning signs posted throughout the property letting people know what they cannot do. I recently attended a meeting of law enforcement officers from many law enforcement branches and I can tell you that is not a place you want to be doing any illegal activity because you will get caught, ticketed or arrested. We will continue to keep this property in its natural state while increasing the usability for our residents and tourists. Eco tourism is a big draw for this area and that piece of property is a prime draw for people who like birds, turtles and wetlands.

Taste of The Island was a huge success I always enjoy attending the Taste of the Island.

It is great to catch up with folks and eat all the great food. Port Royal was the wonderful host for this great event and as usual it was packed and so well done by the event organizers. My office volunteered time to help with the event and while we did very little in comparison to the event as a whole, it is always great to be involved in this wonderful event. To say Island resident Michelle Mathews goes all out for Halloween is an understatement. Michelle, owner of Michelle’s Salon, literally decorated every inch of her three bedroom three bathroom home on Palo Seco from floor to ceiling. She was even featured on a local Television station for outlandish décor. Michelle has always thrown the best Halloween party on the Island but this year’s was by far the most over the top as far decorations. Michele has been having her annual parties for ten years but says that this year’s party was her last. It was a good run Michele. Thanks for the entertainment.

opened the pass, a study was commissioned by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to determine the feasibility of opening Corpus Christi Pass on a permanent basis.

By 1970 the pass had silted shut but before the plan could be put into effect Hurricane Celia roared through the Coastal Bend and opened it again.

The exact location of Corpus Christi Pass has moved around over the last few decades. What was originally Corpus Christi Pass was actually a series of passes which began at the bay side of what is now Fish Pass and ran parallel to the beach all the way down The Island to what is now the end of Whitecap Boulevard. The last remnant of the historic Corpus Christi Pass is Lake Padre. The pass historically was considered the dividing line between Padre and Mustang Islands. That line now is Packery Channel which was originally part of the Corpus Christi Pass system.

But as far back as the 1960s there was an acknowledged need for a permanent waterexchange pass between the Gulf and Corpus Christi Bay. A study was commissioned in February of 1967 by the firm of Turner, Collie & Braden based in Houston and presented to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission in June of that year. The idea of cutting the pass was done in an attempt to reduce salinity levels in the Upper Laguna. It was part of a larger plan to combat hypersalinity in the Laguna.

The study concluded that a pass could be cut through Mustang and Padre Islands but jetties would be needed to keep it open in the long term.

The Plan It called for “heavy stone revetments…to fix the Gulf mouth of the pass and protect it from

wave attack.” It also called for the revetments to be at the terminus of jetties which would be a total of 1400 feet in length, bordering a channel that would be ten-feet deep by one hundred feet across on the Gulf side of the beach and sixtyfeet wide and seven-feet deep on the bay side.

The side slopes would be at ratio of one vertical to three horizontal.

Heavy stone revetments would run from the Gulf end of the jetties to a distance of 1000 feet landward with layers of stone weighing up to three tons and to a thickness of six feet. Lighter stones weighing up to 400 pounds would then be placed inside the rocks from the Gulf mouth to the point where the channel emptied into the bay.

The jetties would be 400 feet apart on the Gulf side and extend a mere 400 feet out beyond the beach. The exact length would be determined not by designers but by the budget. The total budget for the project varied from $2.7 million for 1000-foot jetties to $5.4 million for 2200foot jetties with half of the costs being the actually construction costs of the jetties themselves and the remainder for engineering, inspections and labor.

Annual dredging was anticipated to cost between $66,000 and $100,000.

But over the years as The Island was battered by hurricanes and as attention shifted to rebuilding rather than new construction, the idea for a permanent Corpus Christ Pass was forgotten. Jetties were built at Fish Pass but lost the battle with Mother Nature and sealed shut.

It wasn’t until 2005 when the tidal surge from Hurricane Ike washed the last plug of sand from the nearly complete Packery Channel that The Island had a permanent water exchange pass.

Police Blotter City Hosts Auction To Sell 120 Vehicles Saturday

The city of Corpus Christi will auction 120 cars, trucks, and motorcycles at the Police Vehicle Impound Lot, located at 5485 Greenwood Drive, on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 10:00am.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Corpus Christi Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainsville, Virginia, 20155.

The general public is encouraged to register and view the vehicles for auction from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Friday, November 6 or November 7 from 8am until the start of the auction. No one under 17 years of age will be allowed in the impound lot or auction lot areas. Only registered bidders with a current bidder number will be allowed in the auction sale area on Saturday.

Twelve of the vehicles for sale were impounded for no insurance.

The vehicles for auction may be viewed online and an auction list may be downloaded from www.siskauction.com.

Public Notice About Police On-site Inspection The Corpus Christi Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional standards.

Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-theart standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 6:00 P.M. The session will be conducted in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 1201 Leopard Street.

Agency employees and the public are also invited to offer comments by calling 361886-2792 on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M. Comments will be taken by the assessment team.

That was a bad television October 27 10:30 p.m. 500 Hancock Avenue Discharge of a Firearm (Television) A man was arrested by Corpus Christi Police after he shot his television set inside an apartment in the 500 block of Hancock Avenue.

After the man fired the shot, his 53 year old wife, left the apartment and went next door to call police. When Officers arrived, she told them that she and her husband were having an argument while they were both in bed. He reached over, grabbed his .45 caliber handgun from the night stand, and shot the television.

She then ran out of the apartment.

Officers arrested the 60 year-old man, for discharging a firearm in a municipality, a Class A misdemeanor. The police report did not say which episode of Jerry Springer he was watching.

Island Strategic Action Committee. Is a 14-member committee which meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at

the Comfort Suites on Windward Drive. The committee’s purpose is to advise the Corpus Christi City Council on matters pertaining to The Island. All meetings are open to the public and the public is invited to address the committee during the public comment period.

Padre Island Business Association. The association is a not-for-profit organization whose primary purpose is to advertise and promote Padre/Mustang Islands, Flour Bluff and Corpus Christi while advancing the interests of the business community. It is managed by a 9-member board of directors.

A membership luncheon is held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at Holiday Inn-Padre Island starting at noon. Mixers are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. The association annually has two fundraising events – Taste of the Island in the fall and a Wine Tasting in the spring.

P.I.E. Padre Island Enrichment Club, Inc, P.I.E. strives to enrich the lives of Padre Island women through social activities and community involvement. Full membership luncheon meetings are held the second Friday of each month at the Holiday Inn. Members may also participant in special interest clubs (bunco, bridge, spades, books, etc) that meet throughout the month. ARK – Animal Rehabilitation Keep.

Located in Port Aransas the ARK is affiliate with the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Center. They handle the rehabilitation of most species of wildlife in the area with an emphasis on marine animals. They care for about 1300 animals each year, including about 300 sea turtles and more than 100 species of birds. Island’s PIPPs Chapter of Corpus Christi Red Hat Society. In 2004 a group of Island ladies got together under a Palapa and founded the Padre Island Palapa Pals (PIPPs). Our only rule is that there are no rules! We are all about fun and friendship. We meet once a month for lunch and various fun outings from cupcake making to CPR. Padre Island Social Club is a group of fun loving people that enjoy experiencing the area. We get together for social and cultural events like Sunday Funday at the beach, diner or a night on the town. If you are interested in meeting new people, politics, fashion, all types of musical genres, pop culture, books, theatre, art, movies, museums, wine, beer, food, traveling and more then this is the place for you. I gotta say, Chris Jordan was meant for size 14 high heels. The costume contest MC, Jackie Lynn, has been holding out on us. She is one funny and witty hostess and really did a great job moving the show along. Cheech and Chong won the contest over there with

Meanwhile over at the Back Porch, the big horn band, Myndfields (Corpus Christi, TX) kept it lively even supplying sound tracks during the costume contest (they played Low Rider when Cheech and Chong were up there.)

Mayor Keith McMullen handled the MC duties as always and Cheech and Chong also took their top prize. The theme for the night was “Disney” and the crew went all out. And over at Shorty’s, Kevin Higgins and Barbara Malteze of the Cosmic Dust Devils brought their faithful fans, known at Storm Chasers, down from the Hill Country for the 13th Annual Coastal Bender.

After Halloween, I snuck off the island and headed to the Austin area to see the fam. This was only two days after all of Central Texas had experienced another devastating weather event. I saw evidence of flooding and high winds the entire way up and even had to turn around between Luling and Bastrop because the road was closed. I crossed the Guadalupe, San Antonio and Colorado Rivers and Plum Creek along the way, in which all had experienced record flooding in previous days. When I finally got to my family’s home between Bastrop and Elgin, I saw many, many uprooted trees. There were actually several big oaks down in my sister’s yard from a tornado on Friday. Watching the Austin news stations was disheartening. The city itself got over a foot of water and Wimberley and San Marcos also got hammered again. The area between Smithville and Bastrop has also just experienced a massive wildfire two weeks ago, This is after the catastrophic wild fires in the same area only four years ago. I met a lady who told me their family lost everything in the first fire, with only minutes to evacuate. They rebuilt only to lose everything all over again.

Also on the Austin news was the beginning of the trial of the man who plowed into a crowd during South By Southwest last year, leaving four dead and many more seriously injured. The graphic videos and first hand witness testimony will leave a visual impression with me that I’ll

Tonight, Thursday the 5th, Americana acts Bart Crow and JR Castillo will play Brewster Street.

On Friday, the super cool blues and R&B band from Corpus, Duke E. Brown will take the stage at Giggity’s. This is band not to be missed.

Though this forthcoming season is showing signs of slowing down, we still have some noteworthy shows coming up. This is the time of year when regional acts tend to give way to the locals. We’ve seen a slow drizzle of Winter Texans arriving and it won’t be long until we are inundated. One of the barometers I look for is the rising number of players to join the Free Beer Band. It’s my understanding that the PA Rockers will take their Wednesday home at Bernie’s at the first of January. I think another big hit with the Winter Texans this year will be the Bad Buoys. Also, the Paul Taylor Band on Tuesdays and Mike Williams and Jack Trowbridge on Sunday brunch at Giggity’s is a good bet. The complexion of our little island has just shifted and that’s not a bad thing.

Personally, I love this time of year. So dig out your long pants and get ready to downshift. It’s time to exhale.
