Do you remember The Invasion of Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury)?

By Dotson Lewis, dlewis1@stx.rr.com Special to the Island Moon Dotson’s note: Many of my friends, who were in the Army Rangers on October24, 1983, were alerted to prepare to move out with full combat gear. None of them had a clue as to their destination, but due to the directives regarding packing jungle uniforms & gear, some thought that they were on their way to Beirut, while others thought that another Cuban Crisis was in the making. All were very surprised that after they were airborne, they were informed that the drop zone was on the Island of Granada. Almost to a man no one had any idea of “where in the H… Granada was.” It was one of the UH-60A Black Hawks of Port Salinas-October 25, 1983 fastest military deployments on record.

The invasion of Grenada in late 1983 can be seen as a small part of the rivalry between the U.S. and Cuba during the Reagan years. A bloody coup in Grenada, along with a perceived threat to American students on the island provided the U.S. with an excellent excuse to eliminate a Marxist regime allied to Fidel Castro’s Cuba.

Causes Of Conflict The U.S. invasion of Grenada and the toppling of its Marxist government can be seen as part of a greater regional conflict. This conflict involved the U.S. and its Central American and Caribbean allies on one side, and Fidel Castro’s Cuba, the Sandinista government of Nicaragua and various Marxist guerrilla armies on the other. President Reagan and his administration were concerned that the Marxist government of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was allowing Cuba to gain undue influence in Grenada, specifically by constructing a military-grade airport with Cuban military engineers.

On October 13, 1983, the Grenadian Army, controlled by former Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard, seized power in a bloody coup. The severity of the violence, coupled with Coard’s hard-line Marxism, caused deep concern among neighboring Caribbean nations, as well as in Washington, D.C. Also, the presence of nearly 1,000 American medical students in Grenada caused added concern.

However, along with concern, came opportunity.

With President Reagan’s worldwide efforts to confront what he viewed as the threat by the Soviet Union and other Communist countries (such as Cuba), the turmoil in the Caribbean provided a timely excuse to eliminate a Marxist government and give Fidel Castro a black eye.

It should also be noted that on October 23, 1983, American foreign policy and pride suffered a terrible shock when a Muslim suicide bomber destroyed the Marine barracks in Beirut, killing 240 U.S. Marines. A successful campaign in Grenada would prove helpful in alleviating the pain of that setback.

The Conflict Not until about 40 hours before H-hour were commanding officers of the US Navy ships told what the mission in Grenada would be-to evacuate U.S. citizens, neutralize any resistance, stabilize the situation and maintain the peace. That didn’t leave much time to get the ships ready.

In the hangar bay, ammunition stacked to the overhead and machine guns laid in rows were ready to be installed in choppers. Forces of the 2d Battalion, 8th Marines, packed their field gear and cleaned weapons.

Stateside, Army Rangers and 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers assembled and prepared for departure to Grenada.

In the early morning of October 25, 1983, the United States invaded the island of Grenada. The initial assault consisted of some 1,200 troops, and they were met by stiff resistance from the Grenadian army and Cuban military units on the island. Heavy fighting continued for several days, but as the invasion force grew to more than 7,000, the defenders either surrendered or fled into the mountains. Scattered fighting continued as U.S. troops hunted down stragglers, but for the most part, the island quickly fell under American control. By mid-December, U.S. combat forces went home and a pro-American government took power.

In 1941 North Beach was the recreational and amusement hub of Corpus Christi, very similar to what Padre Island, with the new Schlitterbahn Waterpark is today. In 1941 North Beach had it all, it had a beautiful beach for swimming, an indoor salt water swimming pool with filters that kept the stinging jellyfish out, rock and cement jetties then extended from the beach out to the ship channel with piers and docks behind the jetties for pleasure and commercial crafts to dock, an amusement park and Penny Arcade, a Ferris Wheel, and permanent boardwalk carnival with all the games and rides, a skating arena, a movie theatre, and hotel abutting the beach.

Motels had not come into being as of yet. Nearly all the rental housing was Tourist Courts, mostly one-room with bathrooms and toilets outside. There were saloons that sold only beer, numerous dance halls and a pavilion near the water for dancing, an elementary school and a lift bridge over the ship channel leading into the Port of Corpus Christi. On nearly any given day or night the jetty would be lined with people fishing with a cane pole or rod and reel. They caught mostly hardhead catfish and sheepshead. In the winter months a lot of large speckled trout were caught near the ship channel. When a catfish was caught they were

4. The invasion sent a message to Cuba and Nicaragua that they could only go so far in exporting revolution in Central America and the Caribbean without provoking an American military response.

On North Shoreline or Surfside, where the jetty started there was a small bait stand. The bait was large-size white shrimp that were sold for 25 cents a pound and was wrapped in the Caller-Times newspapers. Out in the bay, as seen from downtown area, PBYs and Martin seaplanes constantly practiced takeoffs and landings. On calm days, crash boats would make big circles, making wave action so the planes would be able to get airborne. Quite a few planes of all types crashed into the bay, some in the Laguna Madre behind Padre Island. Luckily very few pilots were killed.

There were so many sharks in Corpus Christi Bay that the handful of shrimpers had to tie rope shrouds into their nets to keep the sharks from ripping them open. Today, a shark of any size is as rare as hen’s teeth in the Bay. The oysters in Nueces Bay were so large that two of them made ameal. Crooked politicians declared the oysters contaminated in order for shell dredgers to sell the oyster shells to top roads throughout the city.

It made for a very bumpy ride down any shell street. It was like a rumpled washboard used to do laundry.

New North Beach Ah! Those were the good old days, so to speak, as I witnessed North Beach at age ten after moving from Glenrose, Texas, 25 miles southwest of Fort Worth to North Beach. The beach was a paradise for both children and adults alike.

5. As a result of the Cuban defeat in Grenada, Colonel Pedro Tortolo, who was the commander of Cuban military personnel on Grenada when the U.S. forces invaded, was court-martialed and sent to Angola with the rank of private, along with most of his Grenada command.

Grenada-- 49 dead and several hundred wounded.

Cuba-- 29 dead and over a hundred wounded.

Unique Facts 1. This was the first “war” between the U.S. and Cuba. Though some would say that the Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1961 could fall into that category, I do not count it in the category of an “official” shooting war or conflict.

2. Grenada was America’s first military victory since well before the Vietnam War. 3. This was the first time since before World War II that an avowed Communist/ Marxist government had been replaced with a pro-Western one. It should be noted though, that some governments which the United States and her allies claimed were communist (like the Arbenz government of Guatemala and the Mossadegh regime in Iran) did fall due to covert American (CIA) action. These were not counted since they did not officially proclaim allegiance to the communist ideology or become overt allies of other communist nations.

There was an oil storage facility with large tanks on Timon but hardly any other commercial buildings or stores. There was a steady stream of Japanese cargo ships hauling scrap iron and metal back to Japan that was used to build their war machines.

If you are traveling on North Padre Island Drive going south you will soon be on South Padre Island Drive, across part of Corpus Christi, through Flour Bluff, across the JFK Causeway and end up on the most northern part of Padre Island, known as Padre Island, a part of Corpus Christi, the “new” North Beach.

The Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will receive approximately $1.25 million over the next three years to work with Mexican colleagues in the southern Gulf of Mexico to look for residual impacts from the Ixtoc I oil spill of 1979-1980 on coastal areas, fisheries, and the deep sea.

Port Aransas Happenings…

Tot Time

Parents, grandparents and caregivers are invited to bring kids 1-4 to Tot Time on Thursday, Nov. 20. From 10 to 11:30am, kids can play, learn, socialize and have fun with others as the adults get a breather as well. Tot Time will not be held Nov. 27, but will resume weekly on Dec. 4. Due to holidays, it will not be held Dec. 25 or Jan. 1.

Other than the holidays it is held each Thursday morning.

Dance Night Meet some people, get some exercise, learn some steps and just have fun at the next Dance Night. Enjoy music and or dance, your choice.

Bring someone or come alone; get exercise or just listen to music. The event this month and December’s will be held at the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St. Dance nights are held 6:30-8:30pm on the third Thursday of the month and will be held at Sharkey’s Beach Club in January and February.

Refreshments will be provided, but the public may bring their own. The free event is courtesy of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation.

Birding on the Boardwalk A guided birding tour for anyone, novice to expert, is held year round in Port Aransas.

Every Wednesday at 9 am at Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center at end of Ross Ave, local guide Nan Dietert leads the free tour on the boardwalk. See birds, gators and flora and fauna in their natural setting along the quarter mile boardwalk. Bring binoculars and cameras if you have them. The boardwalk is handicap accessible, but also includes a tower with scope for a birds-eye view. The weekly event is sponsored by the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.

Community Park Pool The Port Aransas Community Park Pool will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27. Water exercise and deep water exercise will be held Wednesday and Friday, weather permitting.

Applications Being Taken for Port Aransas City Council Unexpired Term At the Thursday, November 20, 2014 Council Meeting, Mayor Keith McMullin read into the record the letter of resignation from Place 1 Council Member Robert “Bob” Petitt. The City Council directed City Secretary Parker to begin the process for appointment to the Place 1 position which will expire in May, 2015 to begin immediately for appointment at the December 18, 2014 City Council Meeting.

Water Desalination: One Answer To Texas’ Growing Water Use

Earlier this year, the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives appointed the House members to the Joint Interim Committee to Study Water Desalination. I am pleased to announce that the Speaker has given me the honor of serving as Co-Chair of this important committee.

As many of you are aware, the Texas Legislature is not currently in session. The Texas Legislature constitutionally meets for 140 days every odd numbered year, which makes the next official session for the Texas Legislature to meet January 2015. It is important to note however, that this does not mean that the Texas Legislature stops working. In fact, the period in between sessions, often referred to as the interim, is when the Texas Legislature identifies and studies the important issues facing the State of Texas in preparation for the next legislative session. This is one of the reasons I filed and passed House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 59. HCR 59 requested that the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Lieutenant Governor create a joint interim committee to study water desalination in Texas. The joint interim committee is composed of Texas House and Texas Senate members.

When we look at the growing population in our area and various economic development initiatives, there is an ever growing demand for access to clean water across the state. In addition, it is important that we identify the different components that relate to the use of water and find ways of trying to reduce the overall use and loss. According to the National Weather Service, about 90% of the water loss comes from evaporation. Due to this staggering figure, we also have to try and find other avenues to help the growing demand for water.

One of the possible solutions is to develop and create salt water desalination facilities along the Texas Coast.

As many of you know, water desalination has been a topic of discussion in our area for many years. This is why I thought it was important that the State of Texas start taking a serious look at water desalination in our state.

There are multiple types of desalination, such as brackish ground water, brackish surface water, and seawater desalination. Below are some interesting facts about water desalination in Texas according to the Texas Water Development Board: • Texas currently has an estimated total municipal desalination capacity of about 123 million gallons per day (about 137,760 acrefeet per year) which includes 73 million gallons per day (about 81,760 acre-feet per year) of brackish groundwater desalination and 50 million gallons per day (about 56,000 acre-feet

• In addition to municipal desalination, industrial desalination capacity in the state is estimated to be about 60 to 100 million gallons per day (about 67,000 to 112,000 acre-feet per year) mainly in the power and semi-conductor industries.

• The largest inland municipal desalination plant in Texas, the Kay Bailey Hutchison desalination plant in El Paso, has a design capacity of approximately 27.5 million gallons per day (30,800 acre-feet per year) and went into production in August 2007.

• The average cost to produce 1 acre-foot of desalinated water from brackish groundwater ranges from approximately $357 to $782.

All of this data is subject to change and the recent water desalination hearings have brought new information to the forefront.

Foundation and Zombies Editor’s note: Padre Island science fiction writer, Arlan Andrews, Sr., has been making frequent appearances in national science fiction magazines. ANALOG MAGAZINE OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FACT, the longestrunning such publication, last year carried his novella, "Thaw," and his fact article, "Homesteading to the Stars." In 2014, ANALOG featured his guest editorial, "Sixty Astounding Years," in the July/August issue; a post-nextIce Age novella, "Flow," in the November issue; and a co-authored fact article, "SPEARED," proposing a unique astronaut rescue concept, in December.

By Arlan Andrews, Sr. “Time travelers brought us to our present situation,” Senator Aciedo said loudly, trying to have his voice heard over the muffled roar of screams, grunts and groans echoing through the Capitol building from outside its thick walls. He paused as the chump!chump!-chump! of AZ-47 decapitation rounds from the Capitol Guards’ guns grumbled loudly, then diminished.

The cacophony of screams, grunts and groans likewise now attenuated, he began again. “The Russians, damn their non-existent souls, should have known better than to mess with Father Time. Chronos Unleashed, indeed! If they had checked with us, the world wouldn’t be having this—this—” Here he stumbled, searching for the proper word. Cannot use the Z-word, absolutely cannot! The media would murder me!

“This apocalypse!”

“Objection! Objection!” From the floor, the Opposition was screaming. Finally, one Senator was given the floor. “There is no evidence of any, any so-called apocalypse, for want of a better word. These unfortunates outside our chamber—” Aciedo grimaced as yet another crescendo of screams, grunts and groans steady built up, “—are the victims of disease, of neglect, of ignorance. We should be working here to fund research to help them, not to—” A sudden surge of raucous noise cut off the speaker, followed by a gagging odor of putrefaction. The Senate chamber doors creaked and groaned and finally burst inward from the brute force of wave after wave of paleskinned, ragged and bloody figures, screaming, grunting, groaning, grasping at the Senators and their aides, biting them when they were able.

Senator Aciedo recognized several Capitol guards among the rotting, stiff-legged invaders.

Damn! That virus acts fast! he thought without thinking as he strapped on a respirator mask and unstrapped his own AZ-47, quickly mowing down the nearest group of gruesome attackers.

He was gratified to see that all the Senate aides and other Senators were likewise firing their decap rounds, resulting in emaciated heads rolling this way and that like lawn-bowling balls, green blood gushing the aisles, staining seats and TV monitors alike. This stench alone is almost enough to kill you! he thought. But death was only the beginning if this virus infected you!

Within five minutes, the Senate was once again back to normal, the hazmat-suited, ax-wielding Capitol Maintenance crew rapidly cleaning up the bulk of the mess with their usual aplomb, spraying disinfectants and deodorizers to wash away the stench of the decaying, decapitated bodies—and finishing the job on the few animated but immobile corpses left with heads attached.

Wiping green stains from his face mask before removing it, Senator Aciedo took the podium once more, and continued the day’s business.

“Our first witness will be Dr. Mesach Maximov, distinguished professor of science, formerly of the former nation of Russia. Dr. Maximov, if you please.”

Maximov moved his massive Levantine frame into the chair behind the witness table. “When we Russians invented time travel, or Vremya Zemalya,” he said, “we were very aware to prevent paradoxes. We could not change past, we would not interfere with the history, much as we would have liked.” Senator Aciedo wondered just what kinds of changes the Russian would have liked to make: strangle Stalin in the crib, maybe? Or maybe Gorbachev?

“And so, we experimented with sending only immaterial, er, materials, into past and future.

That is, we could send minds of time travelers back into past, into minds of past people, to observe, to remember, but not to affect actions of people of the past or future. And it worked!

Was beautiful! The reports from St. Petersburg and October Revolution alone were—” “Dr. Maximov,” Senator Aciedo interrupted, “Thank you for your testimony. We are all aware of discovering that Ulanov was not quite the heroic figure some once made him out to be. But,” his voice grew serious, “we are here to discuss the, uh, um, present situation, the virus that is affecting large numbers of our—” “Objection! Objection!” the same Opposition voices interrupted. “The Senator is exaggerating the threat. He must stop these unfounded allegations!” Dozens of other Opposition Senators joined in, and Aciedo spread his hands in surrender.

“Enough, gentlemen,” he moaned, “call it what you will. But I think the threat that we face must be described before it can be attended to. Dr. Maximov, would you address the, uh, present situation, and how time travel may have caused

it?”

“Da,” Maximov grimaced, his nose wrinkling at the residual smells left after Capitol Maintenance had finished their work. “As you know, Russian economy flourished when we were able to offer Vremya Zemalya over the Internet, allowing paying tourists to choose any time and place of their wishes. Projecting their minds by the millions, into watching surprises of the Pyramids, shock of Crucifixion, excitement of Coliseum Games, actual Atlantis, and—” Aciedo banged his gavel. “Doctor, please, the present situation?”

“Da,” the aging scientist said. “After one year of VZ, hundreds of millions of persons had paid milliards of yuan for their VZ mind-traveling.

Especially in Russia; almost every one of our citizens had escaped into golden past, a place of their choosing. Everyone but us—you, me and a few older scientists whose brains were just too old, too ossified, to accept VZ transfer protocols.

“And after one year, first reports began to come in.

Human bodies, mindless, rotting, rampaging throughout our country.

Emergency systems overcome. Few heroic medical doctors were able to strap down and investigate poor creatures.

They found that bodies were infected with unknown virus. Strangely, brains of these creatures were operating only minimally, as if no consciousness present.

And even minimal maintenance, involuntary systems, had shut down, so bodies were selfdegenerating.”

“Unknown virus seems to be initiated upon the return of VZ’ers. Triggering mechanism must be at quantum level, because we were unable to view even with our electron microscopes. And then outbreaks in your own country began.” The scientist shook his head, shuddering.

“Yes, Dr. Maximov,” Senator Aciedo took over. “We are familiar with that outbreak, quite familiar.” Aciedo could not bring himself to violate the Preferred Consensus, could not say the Z-word. Unfortunates was necessary, but not at all sufficient to describe the literally lost souls of the VZ’ers. But just as unfortunate were their victims, when a VZ’er’s bite—saliva—could instantly infect and override a healthy person’s immune system. “But how,” he continued, “did this happen?”

The Russian sighed and groaned. “Minds of VZ travelers, those who traveled many, many times, somehow got stuck in past. Some kind of accommodation to minds that left our present too many times. Maybe each trip took away little consciousness, allowed little more ability to stay in past host? My colleagues in former Russia were believing that as mind diminished, normal viruses in body reacted to conquer remaining intelligence. Whole body became virus machine.”

Grimacing, Senator Aciedo said, “You mean, every one of the, uh, unfortunates is driven by a virus, their minds totally gone?” He took a deep breath, “And just where are these lost minds?

Do you know?”

Maximov gave a Russian shrug of hopelessness.

“VZ’ers are all virus. Bodies rot because virus is not alive, has no reason to maintain anything but attack mode in order to propagate. No other purpose.

“As for minds of more than billion people, VZ’ers, we think they are marooned somewhere in past. Nothing can be done for them. No rescue. No bodies to return to.”

Aciedo silently thanked God that he himself had been too old for online time-traveling. He had viewed the rather shocking re-creations of momentous past events based on descriptions of the VZ’ers who, in the early months of the craze, had returned with fantastic stories of high technologies, lost civilizations, and reports of religious and historical events that differed wildly from accepted versions. Truth hurts, he recalled a Russian saying. Indeed!

A thought struck the Senator and he blurted out, “Dr. Maximov, if all of these hundreds of millions of people, billions maybe, are stuck in the minds of people in the past, can they have any effect on our past? Is our past really our own?”

The Russian put his large hands over his bearded face. “As virus degeneration progressed, some VZ returnees told stories of physical interaction with hosts in past. They said they could make hosts do things. We feared for integrity of past.

Afraid of making changes we could not control or predict. Some returnees said they had been active in the bodies of Napoleon, Akhenaton, King George Three, some American Presidents, some Arabs, many Roman Emperors, even Biblical prophets. But before we could discover cause and effect, virus plague occurred, and you know rest.”

Aciedo spread his hands. “Then billions of people are in the past, changing it as we speak, with the knowledge of modern history and technology. What have you done?”

Before the scientist could answer, Aciedo’s attention was grabbed by the sounds of yet another onrush of screaming, grunting, groaning mobs of VZ’ers. This time, however, they charged through in numbers that overwhelmed the remaining Capitol Guards. In the mad crush that followed, one of the creatures bit the Senator through his sleeve, taking away a chunk of suit and skin. The gusher of Aciedo’s arterial blood immediately attracted other undead, and they converged on the Senator.

Aciedo had only seconds of consciousness left before the virus took control. In the dark descent toward oblivion, he wondered why his final thoughts were of Ambrose Bierce.

Tiny Ripples Important to Ocean Mixing Study to Address Small Waves Ability to Distribute Nutrients or Harmful Contaminants Even the smallest ripple can have a huge effect on ocean mixing and distribution of harmful contaminants, says Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi researcher, Dr. Darek Bogucki, Assistant Professor of Physical Oceanography.

Bogucki was recently awarded a $409,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study the impact of non-breaking surface waves and the turbulence they create in our oceans.

The same processes that regulate the global climate also govern the dispersion of phytoplankton and contaminants such as oil droplets from an oil spill.

“It is important to look at how the upper two meters of the ocean responds to small ocean disturbances,” Bogucki said. “By including a more realistic and turbulent flow in our research we can dramatically improve models that could determine how oil spreads during a spill or even climate change.”

When people think of waves, they usually conjure up images of the classic Hawaiian barrel wave. These monstrous “tubes” are a well-studied aspect of ocean mixing and are created by winds that cause turbulence on the waters surface. Less known are the smaller waves that do not crest in the classic wave shape. These ripple-like waves are called nonbreaking surface waves and researchers have overlooked the impact they could have on ocean mixing.

In collaboration with researchers from the University of Miami’s SUSTAIN wind-wave laboratory, Bogucki will look at the amount of turbulence that occurs when these ripples are created. A wind and wave generator will be used to create the non-breaking surface waves

Dr. Darek Bogucki in a water tank. Bogucki will then use his unique optical sensor to sense the temperature distribution of water in the tank. As the ripples create turbulence, the warmer top layer of water should be forced down to mix with the cooler layers.

“With this experiment, we plan to challenge the status quo and use rigorous research to address the knowledge gap regarding non-breaking surface waves,” said Bogucki. “We also plan to collaborate with the student-run video project Waterlust to produce and distribute short wave and turbulence videos.”

All data gathered from the University of Miami SUSTAIN laboratory will be included in a new joint program with the College of Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Two graduate students will be directly supported by the study and participate in the data collection and processing effort over the next three years.

Bogucki heads the Marine Sensing and Simulation Group within the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The lab focuses on coastal processes, optical wavefront sensing, polarimetric measurements and remote sensing.

La Posada cont. from A1 Padre Island Yacht Club which is organizing the La Posada celebration.

The parade began in 1974 as an informal gathering of boaters who cruised their way around The Island. Later, the Toys for Tots program was added as a charity for the event and now La Posada raises about 20% of the toys for the program statewide. Islanders who gather on decks to watch the parade bring toys to donate and signal the collector boats with the yellow flashing lights for pickup. The Toys for Tots program is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps and the collector boats are manned by Marines in dress blues. Schreck said the collector boats this year will pass by the homes on Commodores Point for pickup, an addition to their route in years past.

In only its fourth year the La Posada (kickoff) Pre-Party at Scuttlebutt’s has grown into a popular event featuring food, live and silent auctions, fire jugglers, and an assortment of activities which have necessitated the addition of a large tent in the Scuttlebutt’s parking lot. A shuttle will pick up party goers from the Baptist Church parking lot and from the parking lot at Berkshire Hathaway.

So dig out your best party recipes and decorate your boats everybody, it’s time to La Posada!

Life’s a song…

Lloyd is probably best known as a pedal steel player. He played with the phenomenal Maines Brothers back in Lubbock when I lived there in the early 70’s. He also played with Joe Ely when Jessie “Guitar” Taylor and Ponty Bone were in the band. That may have been the best band to ever grace a stage…

EVER. But Lloyd is also a Grammy winning record producer and has produced albums for Wayne Hancock, Butch Hancock, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Charlie Robison, Bob Livingston, Two Tons of Steel, Roger Creager, Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green and on and on. His daughter Natalie Maines was in the Dixie Chicks. So, it seems only fitting that if you wanted someone to steer your music career in the right direct, Terri and Lloyd would be a pretty good place to start. In their workshops, they focus on stuff like songwriting, performing tips, recording and production tips, sound quality, getting publicity, promoting yourself, and all the business related stuff that “ain’t art”.

These are definitely two people who live by their motto: “Own Your Own Universe”. They are truly inspiring people and creative geniuses.

The week in review…

A couple of my old friends were in town last week. Teri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines were conducting their annual “Life’s a Song” workshop and retreat at the Third Coast Studios located at Seashell Village in Port A. Every year, a few dozen aspiring musicians who want to kick their careers up to the next level, huddle with Terri and Lloyd for some of the best advice a person could ask for. And you couldn’t want for better advisers that Terri and Lloyd, their resumes read like a “how to succeed in the music industry” template. I’ve watched Terri’s career closely since the early 90’s when she used to show up at the little open mic I ran at Billy Blues in San Antonio. I knew from the first time I heard her that she had something special. I actually have the distinction of giving Terri her first paid gig opening for Marcia Ball for a whopping $50. Since that time, she’s recorded 14 albums since 1996 on her own record label (Willory Records), co-wrote a Grammy winning song with Lloyd Maines for the Dixie Chicks, published a book (Cry Til You Laugh) and established a nonprofit community arts center in San Marcos, OYOU (“Own Your Own Universe”), offering educational and therapeutic arts programs, including for those who face neurological challenges or physical disabilities. She’s also accumulated a tow sack full of awards such as Best Folk Act, Best SingerSongwriter and Best New Band from the Austin Music Awards and Best New Artist from the

There is so much to be thankful for in my world.

For starters, I live on a tropical island and write about music for a living. Sure beats shoveling you know what in Lubbock. I am surrounded by creative, loving friends and want for nothing. I am so thankful. Another thing I’m thankful for is the thriving musical community here on the Coastal Bend. The local musicians and people who own and run the venues here are really special. It is truly a pleasure to work with each and every one of them. Also, the fans who keep the wheels rolling and attend all the shows are to be commended. Thank all of you for supporting live music!!! My goodness, I’m full of it today.

Can you feel the love? It’s been a phenomenal year and I expect nothing less in 2015. A little birdie told me that we are just might be getting a new radio station on Padre Island next year that will actually be playing good music… what a concept. That’s exciting! And it’s my understanding that the folks at Schlitterbahn plan to put on consistent concerts starting next Spring when they finish building the park. That will be a game changer, there. So have a great turkey day everybody and tell the people you love, that you love them every day.

Dan Sullivan plays the Open Jam with Selfie at Giggity’s last Monday I got around to see a few shows last week. I caught Jim Dugan and Hot Pickles at Shorty’s, Mike Williams & Jack Trowbridge and the Ty Dietz Band at Giggity’s and on Sunday, my gospel bluegrass band, The Sandy Bottom Boys played a few songs at the Trinity By The Sea Episcopal Church service. That was sure a lot of fun. On Monday night, I went by the weekly open jam at Giggity’s only to learn that Jef Wilson wasn’t running the jam anymore and that Selfie (Ray Summy, Chris Jordan and Cody Strong) was. That was a big change.

Wilson pretty much kept the music directed in the country vein all evening but Selfie had it going in all kinds of different directions.

They had one guy from Austin show up, Dan Sullivan, who was pretty much a solo artist.

Selfie grabbed their instruments as Dan sang and joined in with him. It sounded like they’d been playing together for years. I think this jam is going to attract many more local players now and give the night a fresh shot in the arm that it’s been needing. I saw quite a few locals in the club and the general consensus that I heard was very positive. Selfie are all veteran players who are capable of backing anyone and also playing any number of genres on their own.

I think putting Selfie at the helm is a good move. Attention all players, the Monday jam at Giggity’s is happening and they have all the backline and gear you need… just bring your axes.

Turkey Bowling founder, Susan Powell with Riley P. Dog. The big news this weekend is that this is the last weekend the Back Porch will be open until next March. On Friday night Jake Ward and the Coast Riders will perform and on Saturday the big eight piece party band Cruise Control will put the final exclamation point on the musical calendar for the season. But it ain’t done til somebody bowls some turkeys. And that’s just what going to happen on Sunday afternoon… TURKEY BOWL 2014!!!! Where else on earth, but the Back Porch, are you going to find upwards of a hundred seemingly normal people waiting their turns to hurl a twenty pound frozen turkey at a bunch of bowling pins?

I’ll be the first in line for a chance at the coveted “world champion” position (which I occupied two years ago). Some snot nosed kid stole it from me last year but I’m gonna get it back, you just watch. Enough said. Oh, and since it’s the last day of the year that they will be open, the beer goes dirt cheap.

Also this weekend, on Friday Lyrical Bynge will play Giggity’s and my all time favorite Okie, Joe Mack, will play Shorty’s. Joe Mack is a trip and a whole lot of fun. Don’t dare miss Joe Mack. And remind him not to put sea water in his margaritas. He learned that one the hard was last time he was here with Carter Sampson and Sky Smeed. Also on Friday, Larry Joe Taylor will play a show at Third Coast Theater with Derryl Dodd, Uel Jackson will play the Gaff, Stewart Mann and Statesboro Revue will play the South Texas Ice House (that will be a good show) and Chris Saenz will be at Scuttlebutt’s. On Saturday Mike Milligan and the Altar Boys (Austin, TX) will play Giggity’s, Billy Snipes will play Shorty’s, Russell Edge will play the Gaff and there’s a BIG Americana show at Concrete Street with Kyle Park, Bart Crow and William Clark Green…say hi to our buddy Cody Angel if you go to that one. ♫ ♪ And, that’s the truth! ♫ ♪
