By Dotson Lewis, dlewis1@stx.rr.com Special to the Island Moon When I was a kid, in the mid-1930’s, living on the South Plains of Texas in a community called “League 4,” the biggest game in town was croquet. The town consisted of general store (which sold groceries, clothing, some hardware and gasoline & kerosene), a school building which housed grades one through eight, and a church. Cotton and wheat fields surrounded the town. We were in the grip of the Great Depression and to say that cash was short was the understatement of the year. Putting it mildly, “no cash…buy on credit” was the guide for everyday living. My uncle ran the store and rarely did more than one dollar cash business in any fifteen hour (6 a.m.-9 p.m.) business day. The store was open Monday through Saturday, and if you really needed something, Uncle Odest (my mother’s sister’s husband) would sell it to you.

The biggest and only attraction for relaxation in the area was a full sized, very well cared for, regulation size croquet court. The court could be used any time day or night. If you wished to play at night you had to bring your own lantern. There was a pecking order of play: 1) adult men 2) teenage boys 3) married women (they rarely played) 4) teenage girls (they more rarely played unless they played with a teenage boy who “claimed” them) and 5) boys & girls 12 years of age and younger. If anyone showed up who was above you in the “pecking order,” and wanted to play, the playing area was immediately vacated, even if you were in the middle of a game.

Island’s PIPPs Chapter of Corpus Christi Red Hat Society. In 2004 a group of Island ladies got together under a Palapa and founded the Padre Island Palapa Pals (PIPPs). Our only rule is that there are no rules! We are all about fun and friendship. We meet once a month for lunch and various fun outings from cupcake making to CPR.

Some of the adult males were experts and on many occasions collected large ($$$$) IOUs. I doubt that very little, if any, money was ever collected. All of us kids loved to play, some of us got to be pretty good players. I got skilled enough to beat many of the male adults. In fact many of them refused to accept my challenges for a match…but I did get to team up with many in games of doubles. It was great. At that time, my ambition in life was to have a croquet set in my own yard. When I was eight we did purchase a set and from then on, for ten years, when I left for the Army; our family had a croquet court in our yard. After getting married a few years later, the first thing I bought for our new home was a croquet set. With that back ground you can see why I have been lobbying for a regulation size croquet court when Billish Park is renovated. I am more than willing to donate a croquet set and help build and maintain the court. Are there any Moon Monkeys that would like to help? It is a great sport and can be played by all members of the family, from the toddler to the “walker operator.”

A family that plays together, stays together! Croquet has come a long way…Instant replay is now used in many tournaments. A brief history: “Croquet is believed to have been first played by thirteenth century French peasants who used crudely fashioned mallets to whack wooden balls through hoops made of willow branches. The origins of the modern game have been traced back to 1852 when a game called “crooky” was introduced to England from Ireland where it had been played since the 1830’s. Widespread popularity came when a London sporting goods manufacturer by the name of John Jaques began selling complete croquet sets (John Jaques & Sons remains the foremost manufacturer of croquet equipment today). With the availability of equipment, croquet flourished and soon became one of the

Ladies Playing Croquet-1940’s primary social and recreational activities of the British leisure class. By 1870 croquet had reached virtually all of the British colonies where it continued to gain recognition through the turn of the century. Given the nature of Victorian courting codes, it is not surprising that young people-particularly women-relished the game, which gave them the opportunity to socialize out of earshot of chaperons! With the introduction of lawn tennis and the onset of World War I, the growth of croquet began to wane. But during the 1930’s and 1940’s croquet enjoyed a resurgence, particularly with the “literati” on the East Coast and the “glitterati” on the West Coast of North America. After World War II, toy makers miniaturized the standard croquet set, simplified the rules and marketed croquet as a backyard “children’s game.”

A Family That Plays Together Stays Together. Do You Remember Croquet?

The sport of croquet is now played competitively in over twenty countries. The growth of the sport can be largely attributed to the efforts of international and national croquet organizations such as Croquet Canada and the United States Croquet Association. Since the early 1980’s the number of competitive players in North America has risen from 50 to over 8,000. Many people are familiar with the informal backyard version of croquet. That version, usually played with nine wickets and two stakes, is often played between friends and family under “house rules” on bumpy back lawns. The nine-wicket game continues to be hugely popular. One retailer estimates that well over 100,000 backyard croquet sets are sold each year. But it is the competitive version of croquet which is now experiencing a dramatic revival. This game is played with six wickets and one stake in the center of the court. The “sixwicket” game offers the player the opportunity to learn more advanced shot-making techniques and strategies than the backyard game. Sixwicket croquet is a fascinating, competitive and social game. The equipment is very different from the “backyard’ variety. Flimsy wire hoops are replaced by iron or steel precision wickets. The balls weigh one pound apiece and have only an eighth of an inch clearance through the uprights. Mallets are often made of fine wood and are weighted depending on the needs of the player.

Who plays croquet? Croquet can be played by everyone. It attracts players of all ages who compete together. It is a sport where players can continually improve their game as they become more experienced. Men and women compete on an equal playing level without separate divisions. Because croquet can be played by everyone, it is a very social game. Divisions exist only among skill levels and most United States Croquet Association tournaments offer competition for beginners and seasoned players alike. How about you & your family?

Rare Texas Historical Maps Now Available to Public Christmas came early at the historic archives of the General Land Office with a gift Texans worldwide will be eager to share. A private collection of some of the oldest and rarest maps of Texas is now available to the public, thanks to a unique digitization project with Houston map collectors, Frank and Carol Holcomb.

“Texas history is an epic tale and these maps are colorful reminders,” Patterson said. “Buying maps on-line from the General Land Office is a great way to take care of some Christmas shopping and help J. De Cordova’s 1849 Map of the State of Texas preserve our great state’s history at the Compiled from the records of the General Land same time.” The Holcomb’s are allowing the General Land Office to digitize their map collection, providing access for the first time to over seventy important historic maps of Texas, the United States, and the Western Hemisphere. The Frank and Carol Holcomb Map Collection includes many maps that show Texas and the southwest dating to 1513, making them the oldest maps in the collection at the General Land Office Archives and Records. “The addition of the Frank and Carol Holcomb Map Collection is exciting news for those interested in Texas maps,” said Mark Lambert, Deputy Commissioner of Archives and Records for the General Land Office. “These maps represent some of the most important not only in Texas history, but U.S. and Western Hemisphere history as well. We are deeply indebted to the Holcombs for this wonderful gift and project. As a state institution, we are reliant upon private individuals, like Frank and Carol Holcomb, to help us fulfill our goal of creating the most comprehensive Texas map database in the world.” The Frank and Carol Holcomb Map Collection will be searchable at www.savetexashistory.org, just like the other 45,000 maps housed at the GLO, as well as thousands of additional maps that the General Land Office has scanned for other public institutions and private collectors. “Frank and Carol Holcomb have made an important contribution to the study of the cartographic history of Texas with a donation that will benefit school children studying Texas and American history and geography, as well as scholars, and people who just like historic maps,” Patterson said. “These digital resources will help the GLO, and users of our archival records, better understand how Texas was formed, and will show the evolution of Texas mapping.”

High-quality, digital reprints of the Frank and Carol Holcomb collection are available now for as little as $20. All proceeds from the sales help Save Texas History, a public-private effort to preserve and digitize the massive collection of maps and historic documents in the Archives of the General Land Office.

Office of the State by Robert Creuzbaur

Frank Holcomb is a Houston attorney who specializes in tax issues and estate planning. His wife Carol is a volunteer docent at Bayou Bend, the American decorative arts collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. The maps were publicly displayed for the first time at the Patron’s Party for the San Jacinto Battleground Conservancy in April 2013. These and hundreds of other great maps can be found at www.savetexashistory.org. Most maps at www.savetexashistory.org cost as little as $20. Online and phone orders before 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19th can be delivered by Christmas Day. Orders can also be called in directly to the Archives and Records Program of the Land Office at 1-800-998-4GLO (4456). Maps may be purchased at the General Land Office, 1700 N. Congress Ave., through Tuesday, Dec. 23. The Save Texas History Program is a unique campaign that brings together private and government efforts to preserve the 35.5 million maps and documents at the Texas General Land Office. After items are conserved, they’re digitally preserved and made available to the public via the Internet. The Digital Preservation Project of the Save Texas History Program has been recognized by the Texas Historical Commission for its monumental effort to digitally preserve these historic treasures. To search for maps, place orders, or make a monetary donation to the Save Texas History Program, visit www.savetexashistory.org or call the Land Office toll-free at 1-800-998-4GLO.

Other private collectors are encouraged to donate and digitize their map collections with the General Land Office. Donations made to the GLO for public purposes are tax deductible pursuant to Internal Revenue Code §170(c)(1).

On November 18th the “Power On” Conference, a Film, Interactive and Tourism event featuring state filmmakers, video game makers, and other people involved in the moving image industry took place. Panelists from all over the state met to discuss how to bring film tourism to local communities, the state of interactive industries in Texas, and other subjects relevant to our area. On the same evening, a screening occurred of the movie “All She Can,” a film made and set in South Texas. We hope that we can get ideas on how to further promote and establish South Texas as a top destination for the moving image industry and the video game industry. The conference began with an introduction by myself and Dr. Mark Escamilla. The first panel consisted of individuals from the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau and a tourism coordinator from Bastrop County, with recommendations on how to build film tourism in our area. Bastrop and Austin have hosted many film projects, including “True Grit,” “Transformers 4,” “Boyhood” and other great movies. Next, the group heard from the video game industry, which is a booming industry in Texas. The Entertainment Software Association found that the video games industry contributed over $760 million to the Texas economy, with 127 video game makers in 2012 (compared to 80 in 2009). With a young, computer-savvy generation and workforce in our area, there is ample opportunity for video and computer game establishments to set up shop in the Coastal Bend area. Also, the developers of “All She Can” (set and shot in our area), discussed the aspects of shooting in the Coastal Bend, including their inspiration for the material and the South Texas setting. We hope that the discussion of this film can inspire others to recognize the benefits of filming in Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and other surrounding areas. The industry aspect could bring real economic opportunities to our area. A study by the Bureau of Business Research at the University of Texas at Austin analyzed former film incentive successes in the state, and with that analysis projected expectations for the next 4 years. Assuming that $32 million was spent per biennium ($16 million/year), the state would enjoy $1.17 billion in output (including direct and indirect impacts) and 12,500 jobs over five years. As a reminder, the 84th Texas Legislative session is fast approaching and will be back in session in January of 2015. As always, I want to hear your ideas and suggestions as we get closer the start of next session. These ideas and information are important forms of feedback and I hope that you will not hesitate to contact my office.

Douglas Wayne Sahm…

Fools of the Trade played the Back Porch on a cold Friday night The band played their little hearts out and kept big smiles going, but the joint was vacant. Not even T-Joe was there. The highlight for me was the one Gary Stewart song they played. It was a different story over at Shorty’s where Selfie played on Friday and the John Cortez Blues Band played on Saturday. They had the bands playing on the inside instead of out on the porch. It was really toasty in there and totally jumpin’! I really like Selfie, which is wild man Ray Summy on guitar and local “Jack of all

held at Concrete Street on Friday, the 21st this year. They held it at Whataburger Field the past couple of years and that facility proved to be just too big. They set the stage up in the left field bleachers and the crowd actually viewed the bands from the playing field, but it didn’t really work IMHO. I think the facilities at Concrete Street are a much better choice. For one thing, they are equipped to put on big shows… that’s what they do. Whataburger Field is equipped for baseball games…. concerts get lost in there. This year the headliner is Americana superstar, The Eli Young Band (Denton, TX) who had two chart topping singles in 2011with Crazy Girls (which went double platinum) and 2012 with Even If It Breaks Your Heart (which went platinum). Also on the bill will be the Josh Abbott Band (Austin, TX), Pat Green (San Antonio, TX), Josh Grider (New Braunfels TX), local songbird Bri Bagwell (Corpus Christi, TX) and John Slaughter (Huntville, TX). Tickets are $25 and the show starts at 6:15 alternating the Pavilion Stage and the Main Stage.

Upcoming shows this weekend…

Texas music ambassador Doug Sahm passed away 15 years ago this week. This week marks the 15th anniversary of maestro Doug Sahm’s death. I was Doug’s booking agent in the mid 90’s after he released the classic R&B album “Last of the Real Texas Blues Bands” (Antone’s Records 1994) recorded with the storied Westside Horns of San Antonio. At the time I owned the inhouse agency for the Antone’s Record label and handled many of their artists (Miss Lavelle White, Texas Johnny Brown, Guy Forsyth, Sue Foley, Lazy Lester, Mark Benno, Syl Johnson, etc). I had known Doug since the early 80’s and jumped at the chance to represent him. Doug was the consummate Texas musician and had an equal zest for all of its genres: blues, R&B, country, conjunto, jazz, rock and roll and beyond. The San Antonio native was a child prodigy known as “Little Doug Sahm” and played fiddle and steel guitar on many stages with such mega-stars as Hank Williams Sr. In 1965, prompted by record producer Huey Meaux, he formed the Sir Douglas Quintet with Augie Meyers and began recording hits such as Mendocino and She’s About a Mover. He went on to work with Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records in the 70’s and recorded the famous “Doug Sahm and Friends” album in 1973 which featured Bob Dylan, Dave Bromberg and Dr. John. In the 90’s Sahm went on to form the Tex-Mex super-group, Texas Tornadoes, with Freddy Fender, Augie Meyers and Flaco Jimenez. Doug died unexpectedly from a heart attack in a cabin in Taos, NM on November 18, 1999. I was managing a venue in San Antonio (The Laboratory) at the time and had been recently speaking with him about doing some shows. San Antonio Express-News music writer and good friend, Jim Beal, Jr. called and gave me the sad news. Sahm was the undisputed ambassador of Texas music and a key element in the development of the Austin music scene. There will never be another like him. RIP old friend. You are missed. For an excellent tribute by Bill Bentley go to www.austinchronicle. com/music/1999-11-26/74813/.

Porch and the real deal blues boys, Smokin’ Joe Kubek featuring Bnoise King (Dallas, TX) at Brewster Street. I have done many shows with Joe Kubek in the past in clubs in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Denver and know this man’s talents well. There are few who can keep up with his master guitar shredding. He’s absolutely one of the best. John Cortez will open that show. Also on Saturday, the local VFW post in Port A will have their annual Chili Cook-off and in observance, The Gaff will not be having their monthly belt sander races.

Thanksgiving weekend can only mean one thing…TURKEY BOWL!!!

Selfie played Shorty’s last Friday

Purple Mushroom played Giggity’s last Saturday trades” Chris Jordan on bass. They have an arsenal of drummers they use. These guys are doing an island slanted repertoire of rock, blues and reggae and its fun. On Saturday, Giggity’s showcased a new band, Purple Mushroom (Corpus Christi, TX) who played the harder side of classic rock. It may have been a little too edgy for the room. Also, our pals Ruben Limas (Corpus Christi, TX) played Giggity’s on Friday. I always love to play stump the band with this guy but never win. I know that November is historically the slowest month of the year as far as tourism and club revenue goes, but I keep hoping this year will be different. So far it’s not.

DO NOT MISS LIST Ziegfest 2014… The weatherman says all this cold and rainy stuff is supposed to move out for the weekend and just in time for Ziegfest 2014, which will be

Cold enough for you? It was another cold, slow weekend on our little sandbar. I did get out and brave the elements a little bit though. Over at the Back Porch a scaled down Fools of the Trade (Austin, TX) made their Port A debut to nobody… not one customer was there. It was bleak. We all huddled around the propane heaters and waited around but nobody came. That was a first for me for as long as I’ve been hanging around the Porch.

Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnoise King will play Brewster Street this Saturday.

The Dirty River Boys will play Brewster Street tonight. On Thursday, my absolute favorite new rocking Americana/etc band The Dirty River Boys (El Paso, TX) will play Brewster Street. Weather permitting, this will be the show to catch. I’ve seen these guys quite a few times and am always impressed. Their percussionist, Travis Stearns works hand drums like nobody you’ve ever seen. He’s the sparkplug that drives these artists. Their four part harmonies and edgy lyrics pull you in and keep you there. At one point in the show, they exchange instruments (stand up bass, mandolin, guitar and drums) ala’ Chinese fire drill and show exactly how talented they are. This is a great band. On Friday, blues rocker and island fave, J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) will return to Giggity’s, the Latin jazz duo Hot Pickles will play Shorty’s, and Andy Bertelsen will play the Back Porch. On Saturday night look for the amazing stomp and slide show of the Ty Dietz Band (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s, everybody’s buddy Jim Dugan at Shorty’s, the big party rock band, Naked Maja (Austin TX) will be at the Back

TurkeyBowl 2014 will be held at the Back Porch on Nov. 30. This big news this weekend is the fact that it’s the last weekend my beloved Back Porch will be open for the season and they will go out on Friday the 28th with Jake Ward and on Saturday with the big 8 piece party band, Cruise Control (Corpus Christi, TX). And on Sunday the 30th, the event we wait all year for, TURKEY BOWL 2014 is finally here. The coveted club of past champions (of which I am one) will finally get their chance to make their makes in glory. This event is one of the most pure Port A events of all times. I can attest it takes raw talent to hurl a 20 pound frozen turkey at a bunch of bowling pins. The tension is already beginning to mount. The Porch will reopen in March. ♫ ♪ And, that’s the truth ! ♫ ♪
