Making the Best of What You Have Shannon was a thoughtful and young teacher who I instantly determined was motivated, prepared, and willing to do whatever it took to become a fine educator on the island (those who know her would agree that she is exactly that).

More than a stones’ throw from her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan and equipped with a Master’s degree in Journalism, Shannon began to teach SMA middle school students as the school year 2006-2007 unfolded, something she has refined and continues to excel at 7 years later. The dusty, cluttered, hot, and small area that we were to call our classroom and our home away from home for that school year did not become an obstacle to Shannon, but rather a challenge and an opportunity.

I do vividly recall trying to make the best of our room, sharing and respecting it along with our students. Noise was amplified in the circular staircase so that teachers downstairs heard what happened upstairs and vice versa.

Even with the old tinted windows, the room sometimes became unbearably hot, something that students had to deal with and that we had to consider.

Regardless of what was not ideal, our middle school staff purposefully and positively plunged ahead, having the benefit of dedicated students and supportive parents. Another plus was that we could see the Gulf from our desks and tables upstairs in that building. After many years in education prior to that year as both a teacher and administrator, I could readily tell that Shanny was going to be a tremendous asset to SMA. I really enjoyed being part of that powerful team with Shanny and John.

It was there that I witnessed Ms. Trial (as students know her) continue to refine her craft, to interact with middle school students in a loving and respectful manner and to keep a cheerful and welcome smile on her face.

Seven years later a more experienced Shannon prepares to face another year of teaching middle school students at SMA with the same respect, love and welcome smile.

Grammar As a Language Arts and Journalism teacher at SMA, as well as the sponsor of the SMA and SLC yearbooks, Shannon is delightfully plagued by an “obsession with correct grammar.” But that is not all.

“The best thing about teaching is that there’s never a day when I dread going to work, because I enjoy the students, the school, my peers, and the parents. So many people say they can’t imagine working with middle schoolers, but I love them”, admits Shannon.

Prior to arriving at Seashore Middle Academy, Shannon spent time seriously tutoring students for money in high school and college and later teaching at Sylvan Learning Center. After earning her teaching certificate Shannon earned a teaching job as the publications advisor at Navasota High School. Just as she displays many talents at SMA, she did so at Navasota where she reveals, “I oversaw the high school newspaper and yearbook, as well as taught a general journalism class and darkroom photography”.

After an eight year stint as a yearbook publishing rep, she thought that it was time to return to the classroom, a decision mutually beneficial for Shannon and SMA. At that same time, the Island Foundation was in the process of building a middle school. Great fortune!

A Rewarding and Dynamic Job Shannon has a positive and pragmatic approach to middle school students as she shares, “They’re self-sufficient and don’t require the micromanagement that young elementary school students require, but they’re still children. They’re not old enough to be jaded or disrespectful; they still enjoy a good classroom novel and do what is asked of them rather than questioning authority. Teaching is a rewarding, dynamic job. The only tough part is saying goodbye to the students at the end of 8th grade.”

It is no secret that Seashore Middle Academy is a relatively small school as middle schools go, both physically and in enrollment. Those are two of the treasured benefits for students and staff alike. Shannon claims, “One of the reasons I love working with the Seashore schools is that the entire community is very involved in the schools and students live in a pro-education environment; consequently, the problems in education aren’t as omnipresent or insurmountable here”.

In describing the school Shannon is swift and sure to add, “SMA is unique in that the classes are small and we truly know each child and his or her parents. The faculty members are very close-knit and consider each other friends, so

each child has a hard-working team of educators communicating about them and striving to do the best for them individually. We’re a family at SMA.”

Teacher continued from A1 dates, and a myriad other things that only a highly organized and prepared teacher would create. I had just met Ms. Shannon Trial, who along with John Sacchetti and your’s truly, were the charter staff members of Seashore Middle Academy (SMA). All of us shared that one small 2 story building with the dream of helping to create the best middle school possible for our island children. She offered to share the white board with me. I could tell immediately that Shanny (as I came to know her) was going to be an excellent teacher and friend. Immediately I liked her.

Two issues back, we pulled the Sudoku puzzles and the Crossword to see if anyone would care. It turns out, we got a lot of feedback about the Sudoku, Moon Sudoku being known by Sudoku fans as some of the toughest around. So we made them a little tougher. Enjoy!

Shannon discloses USp099 one of her hopes for her students, “I hope students think back and remember how much they loved a certain novel that we read or that they chuckle to themselves and think of me when they hear or see a grammatical error.

They know all of my pet peeves, and many of them become my grammar minions.”

Students work hard to communicate in Ms. Trial’s classroom, using correct grammar verbally or in written form. Shannon continues the Language Arts curriculum, productively polishing their understanding of language and honing their appreciation of literature before the SMA students begin their high school years.

Challenges

Normally, there are challenging components to every job or career. Shannon offers, “As a language arts teacher, the most challenging part of my job is getting reluctant writers to elaborate on their ideas and become fluent in expressing themselves. Personally, the hardest part of teaching is not working oneself to death (pardon the hyperbole), because there’s always more that can be done. I always reinvent the wheel!”

Education in the United States has come under attack over the years for a variety of reasons and continues to be perceived by many as broken or at the minimum as something that ‘kind of’ works for some and not others. It has been described as a six cylinder engine working on four cylinders.

Wagging fingers frequently get pointed at one suspected cause or another; lack of finance, gangs, uninvolved parents, poor teachers, ineffective administration, unions, government meddling, lack of government control, lack of basics, not enough electives, not enough choices for lower achieving children, not enough trade school options and programs, not holding students accountable and on and on.

The cause and blame lists seem endless.

Of course, schools, parents, teachers, finance, neighborhoods are not the same. So what are the answers? Are there quick fixes? Any fixes? There are several knowledgeable social scientists and educators who have studied education’s best and worst attributes and who offer thoughtful and research based assessments and potential solutions.

As a veteran teacher Shannon has had an opportunity to work in education while examining it in more depth. She insightfully expresses, “Everyone has so much invested in education—every parent, teacher, administrator—that one could debate endlessly about what’s broken in education and how it should be fixed. One of the reasons I love working with the Seashore schools is that the entire community is very involved in the schools and students live in a pro-education environment; consequently, the problems in education aren’t as omnipresent or insurmountable here.

Shannon claims that she is a print designer at heart, so with skill sets of writing and photography she would see herself as a graphic designer if she were not teaching, but for now she continues to visualize herself as a dedicated and creative team member of the SMA staff for at least another ten years.

In her spare time (do mothers who also work full time out of the home really have spare time?) Shannon reads, enjoys photography and plays word games. She has countless favorite books as well as movies.

We should be pleased that we have terrific schools on the island with incredible students and immensely supportive parents.

Unquestionably, they add to the wonder and joy of living on the island. The amazing stretches of beaches, warm water, inviting restaurants, and friendly people all help make it the ‘sitcom town’ that Shannon describes. Indeed it is an honor and privilege to teach our island children and to watch them grow.

Island Living Shannon, her husband Perry (a marine biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife) and her two children, Hallie and Dylan, love the island. She uniquely describes the island as she explains, “I love that the island is like living in a 1950’s sitcom town in that everyone knows everyone. You can’t go anywhere without running into a friend, and everyone looks out for each other’s children. People are friendly, kind, and interested in the schools and in the entire community. We live in an idyllic bubble.”

By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Research reveals that the original word used in print, by sportswriters to describe spectators attending a sporting event from 1882 to 1910, was the word crank or krank, in some cases.

Female spectators were called crankess.

In a book written in 1903 entitled Humorous Stories of the Baseball Field by Ted Sullivan, baseball owner Charles Comiskey claimed he once called an enthusiast, who broke into his clubhouse a “fanatic.” Sullivan clipped the word fanatic to “fan” in his writings.

Fans and Fancies William Henry Nugent wrote a column in March of 1929 called The Sports Section for a newspaper entitled “The American Mercury” and showed how many common sports terms used in North America are not Americanisms, but rather much older transplants from the British Isles. He claimed the word “fan” can be traced from several sources. The word “fancy”

Sports Talk bill. From ticket prices, seat licenses, parking, stadium costs, ballpark food, and drinks, to merchandise and memorabilia, fans have played their part in making sports franchises great and their owners rich beyond words. The team on the field determines the score, but the number of fans in the seats and their purchasing power creates the value of the franchise itself.

Over the years, the fans’ knowledge and enthusiasm for their teams and their infatuation with greatness on the field of play has not changed as dramatically as the athletes themselves. Fans still live and die with every touchdown, four-foot putt, turnover, or homerun hit. One thing that has changed the most is the fans’ ability to receive instant information and their desire to add their two cents’ worth on the results. With the invention of fantasy leagues and social media, fans are much more in touch and therefore more opinionated.

There is no lag time in real information.

Most fans my age received our sports scores from the radio and the surrounding stories from the daily newspaper. Television was well into the late 1960’s before games were shown in real time, and even then we were rewarded with only one or two local games a week, depending on the sport.

Title IX

was long used as a class name in England and America for followers of boxing, dog fighting and pigeon racing. One story is that baseball borrowed it and shortened it to fan. Hall-ofFame Manager Connie Mack claimed the word “fan” was first created to describe spectators who fanned themselves to stay cool during the games. Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “fan” as an enthusiastic follower of the game, a devotee.

Throughout the years, despite all this evidence, either the word fancy or fanatic has been appropriately shortened to the word fan. It was easier to pronounce, easier to remember and didn’t sound quite as harsh. That seems to be the American Way.

Fans drive the sports bus It’s safe to say that the fans are the lifeblood of sports; always have been. Without fans, there are no paid athletes or sporting events. Fans from all walks of life have always footed the

Another change has been the appetite for (more) sports have increased, especially among the female population with the invention of Title IX. Even as the price of attending in person continues to soar, they still come. But will they continue? Cable television, sports television packages, Twitter, NFL Red Zone, FaceBook, My Space, satellite radio, iPads, and smart phones now allow fans to visually connect instantly. A fan with tickets in Section D, Row 21, Seats 4 and 5, may now find a much cheaper and more comfortable couch at the house. Another cloud of concern for the fan lies in the integrity of the games themselves.

Many athletes continue to cheat by using performance-enhancing drugs. Most fans seem not to care until it is revealed that a cheater from another team affected the outcome of a game which included that fan’s favorite team.

For the most part, fans will continue to find hope in their favorite athletes or teams. They attach themselves to something they consider greater than they are themselves. Most people believe we all need to feel a part of something good every day. If their team wins they feel excitement, and when they lose they feel betrayed. The emotions are real. Hats off to the fans and to the owners; we say, “Be careful what you ask for.” We the fans are footing this bill.

Dotson’s Note: In the July 25th issue of the Moon, I wrote: Returning is the top quarterback in the nation, 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. The sophomore quarterback returns after torching SEC defenses for a conference-record 5,116 total yards. Enough said.

Texas’ Mack Brown takes shot at Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel UT’s Mack Brown in action

Broker says Johnny Manziel was paid $7,500 While the NCAA investigates a report that Johnny Manziel accepted a “fivefigure flat fee” with an autograph broker for signing memorabilia, ESPN reported another broker paid Manziel cash for signing approximately 300 mini and regularsized helmets on Jan. 11.

The latest ESPN report, citing a broker who spoke on the condition of anonymity, claims Manziel was paid $7,500 while signing memorabilia on Jan. 11-12 while attending the Walter Camp Football Foundation in New Haven, Conn.

The broker played two cell phone videos for ESPN, showing Manziel signing white Texas A&M helmets and footballs laid out on a bed in a hotel room. However, the video does not show Manziel accepting any money. The broker and his partner originally requested money to release the videos for use on ESPN, which ESPN declined to pay. The broker told ESPN he decided not to sell the videos.

ESPN has connected three autograph brokers to Manziel. The first, Drew Tieman, is based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and allegedly met with Manziel the day before the BCS title game to purchase autographs. The identities of the second, who is based in Alabama and claims to have met with Manziel the night before the Texas A&M vs. Alabama game in November, and the third are not known.

The on-field rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M is as dead as the dodo, but that didn’t stop Longhorns head coach Mack Brown from taking a shot at Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel .

Brown told a crowd of 1,300 at the annual Gridiron Kickoff Classic luncheon in Austin that Texas signal-caller David Ash was a “great counselor” at the Manning Passing Academy, Brown seemed to be taking a dig at Manziel’s controversial exit from the annual summer camp hosted by Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.

Mack Brown complimented David Ash as “great counselor at Manning Academy.” The crowd of 1,300 at luncheon giggled. Mack: “Yeah.”

The last laugh could be Manziel’s. He was recruited by Texas as a defensive back. Texas A&M, which opens the 2013 season ranked sixth in the USA Today Coaches Poll, went 11-2 last season and Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy.

Texas A&M also walloped Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, 41-13, a pummeling reminiscent of the one the Sooners put on Texas earlier in the year in the Red River Shootout.

Using the transitive property, the Aggies were 70 points better than the Longhorns.

The blues and zippety doo-dah…

Once again it was a smokin’ weekend of music here on our little island. Local songbird, Carol Elliott got the ball rolling at the Ice House with her regular first Friday gig. A couple of her old Aqua Vox band mates, Woody Lawson and L. Leon Sands, showed up to lend their ample talents for some superior harmonizing. It was one of the most fun gigs I attended all weekend.

Her next show will be on September 6th. Also on Friday our pal, Thomas Michael Riley played the Back Porch with master guitarist, Larry Nye in tow. Riley has a real way of talking to the crowd. He has many causes that

And it wouldn’t be a TMR show without a few “hollers and swallers”. Later, the energy took a right turn over at Giggity’s for their big 80’s dance party with Full Body Puppets. I thought this might be a little too cheesy to hang with, but actually had a great time once I gave the music a chance.

I was never much on Duran Duran or Flock of Seagulls but (and don’t repeat this) I thought it sounded pretty good and so did everyone else in the full house that night. Some how I missed all that music the first time it came around. I come from the Townes Van Zandt school of thought, “There’s only two kinds of music:

the blues and zippety doo-dah.”

The Toman Brothers…

On Saturday, the big news in town was the Fabulous Thunderbirds/ Toman Brothers show out at Sharkey’s. I knew something big was stirring when I saw an airplane pulling a big banner high above the beach advertising

This weekend…

We have another huge weekend of music coming up. On Friday, August 9th, Kevin Higgins and the Dust Devils (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch. We haven’t seen much of the Dust Devils this season and it’s always a treat to see these guys. Higgins is one of the greatest songwriters on the Texas circuit today, bar none. Also on Friday, the no-nonsense blues of J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) will return to Giggity’s, the wonderful string band, Independent Thieves (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Shorty’s and the Hilda Lamas Band will play the Sunset Sounds Concert Series in Roberts Point Park. Lamas will also play the Coast Club on Saturday.

The Toman Brothers got the ball rolling on Saturday at Sharkey’s. the show. I go way back with both these bands and was really looking forward to reuniting with this bunch of old friends from Austin and San Antonio. Randy and Russ Toman I N E institution.
