By Brent Rourk It is that time of the year when schools diligently prepare their best academic teams to compete locally, regionally and at the state level, and the island’s Seashore Middle Academy once again is performing very well. Last weekend the Science, Mathematics, and Theatre teams all traveled to compete in local, district and regional competitions.

‘Why does everyone laugh at me?’ If Frankie could talk, I know this would be his question! Whether people love his looks or not, Frankie elicits one unanimous response from practically everyone who meets him...a laugh. But hey, Frankie is an understanding guy...he doesn’t take it personally. Frankie has a big personality, he is sweet, playful and loving. Of course Frankie has a unique look to him...from his beautiful auburn fur, to his little blonde mohawk, to his half-tail, to his snaggle-toothed smile. Frankie, as ANY puppy in the world wants and deserves ONE thing...a good, loving home and a family to call his own.

Frankie is approximately 9-12 months old. He is neutered, up to date on all shots and has had his rabies shot. We rescued Frankie and his 4 siblings many many months ago and he was adopted out. (Their original album is titled ‘Fab Five’) Then his ‘daddy’ decided he didn’t want him any more and decided to throw him out of the condo. He was made to bring him back in. Several times this happened. Finally Frankie’s daddy said he wouldn’t take him back in and that he would ‘dump him at the beach’. He was taken in by a good samaritan and posted on facebook. Then we saw his picture and contacted his rescuer and rushed to get him. We are horrified that someone we trusted to love Frankie forever could do this to him. Thankfully, Frankie is a forgiving kind of guy. He’s easy going and those bad days are not even a distant memory to him. He lives in the moment. I think WE are more hurt for him than he is.

Fulton Mansion Gets Restoration

Friday, March 7, at 1pm, Parks and Recreation Grounds Supervisor Mike McClure will show and tell.

McClure has quite a collection of the reptiles, is knowledgeable and willing to share the information.

Yoga on the Beach Supposed to be warm, Saturday, March 8, so grab a mat, blanket or towel and head for the beach to exercise.

Starting at 8 am, Nancy Myers will conduct a session next to Horace Caldwell Pier at end of Beach St. It is always held the second Saturday of each month, courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Dept.

It is FREE, open to all!

ROCKPORT— George Fulton would be proud. The 1877 Aransas Bay residence where the entrepreneur and his family lived is being lovingly restored with the same care and attention to detail that Fulton himself put into the Second Empire style home that he built and lived in for 18 years. A man of many talents, Fulton’s home featured such advanced mechanical systems as gas lighting, central heating, and indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water––true luxuries for the time period and remote Texas location.

Restoration is the focus of the third “State of the Gulf of Mexico” summit to be held in Houston, in March, by the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

“The Gulf of Mexico is our nation’s most vital marine resource and the ninth largest body of water in the world,” said Dr. Larry McKinney, Director of HRI. “This summit will bring together Gulf state leaders in government, industry, science, and nongovernmental organizations to assess the current condition of the Gulf and to build sound strategies for its future.”

Acquired by the Texas Historical Commission (THC) in 2008, the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission, in partnership with the Friends of the Fulton Mansion, is working to raise the necessary funds to restore this magnificent structure, and recently received a $75,000 grant from the American Electric Power Foundation (AEP). The foundation focuses on improving lives through education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, and the environment. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the AEP foundation provides a permanent, ongoing resource for worthy charitable initiatives.

A report from the Gulf of Mexico Alliance shows that the five U.S. states that border the Gulf have a gross domestic product of over $2 trillion. Much of that economic activity is dependent on or related to the Gulf of Mexico and the health of its coastal natural resources. Just a few examples include:

“We are extremely grateful to the American Electric Power Foundation for this generous contribution to the history of Texas,” said Site Manager Marsha Hendrix. “The scope of work on this project has been expanded since it first began, and with AEP’s assistance, we will be able to address critical issues to restore this mansion by the bay and the stories associated with it to share with future generations.”

The $3.4 million project, now underway, addresses significant preservation issues that would threaten the historic landmark’s future if not addressed. Accomplishments to date include replacing deteriorated iron I-beam and shellcrete vaults with reinforced concrete components; consolidating and repairing foundation walls; carefully removing and documenting original Minton encaustic tile from England to replace rotted wood structure beneath; repairing windows and exterior siding; and repairing interior finishes. Repairs to the striking mansard and ornate trim will begin soon. The general contractor is JC Stoddard Construction of San Antonio.

Previous “State of the Gulf of Mexico” summits examined lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the importance of supporting sustainable economic growth in the Gulf. This year, the four-day summit has five main objectives: • Connecting science and restoration efforts to inform decision-making and identify gaps • Advancing restoration that contributes to the broader Gulf of Mexico ecosystem

“Along with modern conveniences, this house was built to withstand hurricane force winds, with poured shellcrete, a concrete that employs crushed shell for basement walls and stacked, solid plank walls for upper stories, making restoration work more interesting,” said John Volz, AIA, LEED AP BD+C with Volz O’Connell Hutson, Inc. of Austin, the project architect.

“Our goal is to live up to the same standard that George Fulton set for himself in creating this masterpiece. We hope he’s watching.”

“There are many factors and stakeholders involved in sustainable, science-based restoration efforts,” said McKinney.

The Fulton Mansion serves as an educational resource for the students of San Patricio, Nueces, Aransas, Refugio, and surrounding counties, and is visited by more than 25,000 people annually from around the world. Visitation to Fulton Mansion has increased by 20 percent in the past three years. The home is closed during the restoration, but the adjacent Education and History Center remains open.

The “State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit” is March 24-27 at the Omni Galleria Houston Hotel.

Fulton Mansion is one of 20 historic sites overseen by the THC throughout the state representing compelling examples of the Texas mystique. Rehabilitation projects have been completed recently at several of the sites, offering heritage travelers an opportunity to experience these real places where Texas history occurred.

The peer-reviewed visitor spending analysis was conducted by U.S. Geological Survey economists Catherine Cullinane Thomas and Christopher Huber and Lynne Koontz for the National Park Service. The report shows $14.7 billion of direct spending by 283 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park. This spending supported 243,000 jobs nationally, with 201,000 jobs found in these gateway communities, and had a cumulative benefit to the U.S. economy of $26.75 billion.

Uel Jackson played Shorty’s last Saturday and all of my dear friends from the Tarpon Ice House showed up J.W. George sat in in mass. We had with Uel Jackson at an old fashioned Shorty’s last Saturday throw-down just like we used to do frequently at the Ice House. Everybody got a turn on the mic including J.W. George, who once played Shorty’s every weekend. J.W. kept it to a dull roar and played some pretty fine harmonica in the process. Also, Uel’s daughter Sierra Jackson and our friend, Ellie Goldsmith, were in attendance and graced us with their incredible voices. And it wouldn’t have been complete unless me and Paul Fain and Sean Hunter jumped in to sing background on one of the favorite sing-alongs. There was a lot of love in that room. Uel will play Shorty’s on a regular basis, every first Saturday through August.

Giggity’s new Monday Night Open Jam…

Stevie Start with Bron Doyle and Jackie Bales kicked off the first Monday Open Jam at Giggity’s On Monday, Stevie Start hosted the first Open Jam at Giggity’s with the help of Bron Doyle on congas and hand drums and Jackie Bales on guitar and vocals. Also, Tiffany Tuesday showed up and played us a few. All in all, it was a nice showing for the first jam. Spread the word folks, this one is going to be a keeper.

They get the show going around 8:00 PM. In future weeks, Ruben Limas will also help out with hosting some of the jams. This is an open forum and any and everyone is welcome to come out and show us your chops!

The big news around here this week has been “Mardi Gras”. Padre Island faired very well last Saturday for the Barefoot Parade, which went off without a hitch. The Island Moon cast and crew had a forty foot inflatable dog in tow and it was impressive. I’m told the ensuing party that night with Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra was a sight to behold. Word is that the “Small Ax” aka Neesie Beal put on a world class performance and the party itself was the best one to date. I’m kicking myself for not going (I’m very close to the Earfood crew and had spent the previous day with Jim and Neesie Beal in Port A).

Ponty Bone played Fat Tuesday at Giggity’s…

Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones played Giggity’s on Fat Tuesday The weather couldn’t have been nicer for the Barefoot Parade but that wasn’t the case in Port A on Fat Tuesday. In fact, it was pretty sloppy and cold. I absolutely adore Mardi Gras and was determined to make the best of it in spite of the fact that it was 39° and had been raining all day. My phone kept ringing off the hook with people asking me if the parade was still on… YES, it’s still on and to my surprise, we had a pretty decent turnout. It was nothing like the past couple of years, but considering the cold weather, I think everything went swimmingly. After the parade, Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones (Austin, TX) played the big party at Giggity’s to a packed house. The Mike Williams & Rocky Arnold Jazz Band opened the show. Ponty and the guys did an excellent job of keeping the party lit up with their special brand of zydeco, blues and polkas. It really was a great, great night.

Spring Break is coming and so are the cops…

Ok, with Mardi Gras in the rear view mirror, we can now set our sites on the next couple of upcoming events: first the big nasty (Spring Break) and then in April, our pride and joy (SandFest). Most of the Texas Universities get out the week of March 10. Be advised, there will be a small army of state police on our little island, sent here to arrest as many people as they can during this time period… at least that’s what they did last year and it really had a huge negative impact on our local businesses (with the exception of bail bondsmen and lawyers).

And take note here, I’m not talking about our local cops (PAPD, Sheriff or Constable Departments), it’s the state agencies, particularly

DPS, that rampaged our town. The local jail was forced to transport prisoners to Nueces County on a regular basis because they didn’t have enough room for all the arrests being made.

After Spring Break last year, a number of local residents addressed the City Council and voiced complaints… whether it did any good will soon become evident. Don’t get me wrong, if I had it my way, I’d be calling out the National Guard to keep all the, shall we say, “young revelers” in line. I rode as an observer with the Police Chief for six hours during the height of Spring Break last year and wouldn’t want his job for love or money… tens of thousands drunken college kids in one place is pure lunacy and has to be controlled. I just think it’s too bad that so many local citizens get arrested in the mania and that our local economy has to suffer in the name of keeping the peace. But assuming you do escape their dragnets, there will be plenty of good music to see.

The Back Porch will get their season rolling this weekend with two marvelous shows…our old friend Davin James will take the stage on Friday the 7th and the amazing Folk Family Revival will play on Saturday, the 8th. Also on Friday, Chris Garza and Red Giant will play Giggity’s and Stevie Start will play Shorty’s.

And also on Saturday, Aaron Einhouse will play the South Texas Ice House, Texas swingers, Two Tons of Steel (San Antonio, TX) will play the House of Rock and the crowd pleasing Jim Dugan will play Shorty’s. On Tuesday the 11th, the Back Porch will have a big reggae show with Cassette Tape and Alvin and the Slickpunks.

Next Weekend (Spring Break)…

Our Prodigal Son, Cody Angel will come home to play the Porch on Thursday, the 13th. Cody has finally graduated college and has turned 21.

He has also become a regular member of the Kyle Park band as their pedal steel player… that deserves an attaboy! Also on the 13th, the Turnpike Troubadours will play a show with Micky and the Motorcars at Brewster Street and the new Port A “Supergroup” The Jetty Monsters with Chris Jordan, Uel Jackson, Preacher Williams and Russell Edge will make their debut at Shorty’s… that will be a guaranteed hoot. On Friday the 14th, the Melissa Brooke Band will play Giggity’s,

Cody Angel will play the Back Porck on March 13th.

Clarissa Serna (just home from being on The Voice) will play the South Texas Ice House, the hotter than hot all female bluegrass band from Boston, Della Mae, will play the Back Porch (DO NOT MISS THAT ONE) and Jul and the Chrome Wheels will play the first of two nights at Shorty’s. On Saturday the 15th, Metal Shop will play Brewster Street, Cruise Control will be at the Porch, Lyrical Bynge will be at Giggity’s and the big, big Spring Break concert will be at Concrete Street with Randy Rogers, Kyle Park, Cody Johnson and William Clark Green… that should be a blow out. On Sunday the 16th, the Dollyrots will be at House of Rock and Antone and the All Stars will be at Giggity’s. Be safe out there!
