Three Chords and the Truth By Ronnie Narmour

Pig Party finds new beginning…

the neighborhood looked like a ghost town. What I’m trying to say here, is the Pig Party this year was well attended and a lot of fun but the tradition seems to have taken a new path… and that’s not a bad thing. I say congratulations to Edwin and Amy and Howie and everyone involved… your first Pig Party was a new beginning. I think Miss Rose would have been proud.

53rd Annual Texas Jazz Festival…

J.T. Coldfire played the Pig Party at Shorty’s last weekend. The 30th Annual Pig Party at Shorty’s came and went last weekend. This yearly event is a Shorty’s tradition in which multitudes of bikers would roar into town to celebrate the birthday of the proprietor, Miss Rose Smithey. Miss Rose passed away a couple of years ago and the business changed hands to local restaurateur Edwin Myers, who also owns Kody’s Restaurant and Giggity’s. Since taking

Ruben Limas and the Rolling Jays played Shorty’s last Sunday. over Shorty’s a year ago, Myers has changed little about the beloved watering hole and was determined to keep the Pig Party tradition going. They hired some good bands to play all weekend and enlisted the help of local yokel Steve Coons to barbeque a couple of pigs. It was a moderate success but the crowd pretty much consisted mainly of locals with only a smattering of bikers. There was a huge bike

Antone and the All Stars played the Pig Party at Shorty’s last weekend. rally in Corpus over the weekend and it seems that all those bikers stayed in town for the Joan Jett/ Quiet Riot show at Concrete Street. The ones who did ride over to the island ended up at the Salty Dog. Hence, the complexion of the Pig Party turned from a mini-Sturgis to a big local’s party. I saw a few motorcycles but nothing like in the past when the entire town was consumed in scooters. Will Owen Gage (San Antonio, TX) got the ball rolling on Friday night to pretty big crowd and on Saturday they kept the momentum going all day and night with Stevie Start, Antone and the All Stars (Corpus Christi, TX) and J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX). By Sunday when Ruben Limas played,

Kevin Higgins and the Dust Devils played the 11th Annual Coastal Bender at the Back Porch last weekend. Elsewhere on the island, the 11th Annual Coastal Bender¸ hosted by Kevin Higgins and the Dust Devils (Austin, TX) at the Back Porch each year, also played to a much smaller, subdued audience than in years past. The Dust Devils are a vibrant Americana band who perform mostly original songs and have developed a strong base of enthusiastic fans who call themselves Storm Chasers. I’ve seen some pretty wild Coastal Benders the past few years when the Storm Chasers actually became as much a part of the show as the band. They

Higgins had Tom Gilliam (Austin, TX) with guitar wiz David Spencer in tow on Friday, but again, it just didn’t happen. I’m not sure, but this island tradition may have played out. Without those maniac Storm Chasers, it’s just another Dust Devil show.

Melissa Brooke… I did enjoy the Melissa Brooke show at Giggity’s last Saturday. There was a bevy of young hotties from San Antonio present for a bachelorette party and we were treated to an impromptu dance contest. You gotta give it to Melissa for thinking on her feet. It definitely got the party rolling. I really like this band and think Melissa has something special, but my only suggestion would be to cut back on some of the onstage banter and let the music speak for itself. This band is pretty hot and is on their way up. I wish Miss Brooke nothing but success. At her young age, she has a sparkling career ahead of her. She’ll be back at Giggity’s on Thanksgiving weekend, November 30th.
