So, there he stood in Minnesota with 2,997 hits on a Saturday night. The date was April 19, 2000. In anticipation that Cal could reach the magic 3,000-hit club, about twenty thousand additional fans attended. Cal’s first hit was a lazy single to right field. This grizzled veteran understood that it’s not how hard you hit the ball, but where you hit it that counts. Cal has made a good living hitting to the opposite field. Hit number two came in the fifth inning on a “Baltimore Chop.” How fitting is it that a player who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1978 would receive his 2,999th hit named after the city for which he plays. For you history buffs, the “Baltimore Chop” was a phrase used to describe a hitter intentionally striking a pitched ball down toward the ground. The diamond dirt in Baltimore was so hard that the ball would bounce very high and sometimes over the infielder into the outfield, or so high that a base runner could beat the throw to first base for a single.

History in the Seventh History was about to be made in the seventh inning as Cal approached home plate. This was Cal’s 2,800th game played and “Father Time” had begun to show himself. Cal’s hair is now gray and his batting helmet hides the bald spot, but the eyes are still sharp and emerald green.

His ever-changing batting stance in the batter’s box speaks to his work ethic to always get better. So, there he stood like Jackson, ready and resolved.

With my compliments to General Bee, it could be said of Cal, “There stands Ripken like a Stonewall.” Cal would stand his ground and drive a Hector Carrasco fastball back up the middle for his 3,000th hit, and run to first base where friend, teammate, and Coach Eddie Murray waited to congratulate him. Cal became the twenty-fourth member of the 3,000hit club and only the third shortstop to reach that plateau. Honus Wagner and Robin Yount were the other two. Cal’s hit would also make Metrodome history as the park became the first to host three 3,000-hit games. Dave Winfield in 1993 and Eddie Murray in 1995 recorded their 3,000-hits in the same building. Cal also joined ten other players who recorded their 3,000-hits while playing for the same team, and became one of seven to record 3,000-hits and 400 home runs in their career. The names on that list are legendary: Mays, Aaron, Musial, Winfield, Murray, and Yaz now welcome Cal to this exclusive club. If you’re wondering which

He holds the record for home runs hit by a shortstop at 345, and he played in seventeen consecutive All-Star games. He has also collected two Gold Glove Awards, and is known mostly for breaking Lou Gehrig’s record of consecutive games played. In my opinion, this record will never be broken.

There is no other sport in any other state that can compare to the history, the rabid fan base, and unbridled action that is Texas High School Football!

How about them Bobcats (Refugio)!

The 9th ranked Bobcats roared back from a two touchdown deficit in the game’s final minutes and got the help of a missed extra point in the last seconds of regulation, fending off 10th ranked Rogers in overtime in the Region IV-2A, Division II semifinals last Friday.

When the Refugio players recover from the shock of the narrow victory, they All-time state will prepare to play passing leader Travis Quintanilla East Bernard (13-0) in the region finals in Houston Friday night.

East Bernard, the defending state champion, defeated Poth 42-7 on Friday. Refugio has been aching for a shot at vengeance with the Brahmas after East Bernard defeated the Bobcats 54-23 in last year’s regional final.

Refugio’s coach Jason Herring said soon after last Friday’s high scoring victory when asked about facing East Bernard again, “I can’t even think about that right now after the game we just went through.” Coach Herring had a lot on his mind when remembering Friday’s breathtaking win.

Travis Quintanilla’s performance in the game made him the state’s record-holder for career passing yards with 13,013; moving him past the previous record set by Lake Travis’ Garrett. Quintanilla also increased his career state touchdown record further out of reach with 174, which is seven ahead of Graham Harrell’s old record.

Refugio came back with a well executed 11play drive topped off by Isaiah Perez’s pressure packed catch on 4th & 12 which reduced their deficit to three points with 3:44 left in regulation.

After having given up touchdowns in six of seven Eagles’ possessions, the Bobcats defense stopped the opponents with a three and out.

In just four plays, Quintanilla found J.B. Brown speeding wide open down the sideline for a 71yard touchdown pass, giving the Bobcats up 6660 with 1:55 left.

But, run oriented Rogers answered with a 90yard drive, scoring on Jackson Sodek’s threeyard dash with 00:02 left. Hoelscher missed his third straight extra point, thus putting the game into overtime.

In the overtime, Rogers had the first possession of the series and scored on Brody Malovets’ twoyard run. Rogers tried a two point conversion, which was stopped in the backfield by a headsup play by Brown.

Rogers’ coach Jeff Walker said after the game, “I went for two, because we missed four extra points. If I try to kick there and we miss gain, everyone would call me stupid. I guarantee you if we’d made all our extra points, I would have kicked there.”

Refugio started its overtime possession with a 21-yard pass to Marquis Brown. Three running plays later, Perez drove into the end zone out of the Wildcat formation to tie the score. Alfredo Cordero made eight of his nine extra points and made the final one to give Refugio the great win.

“That’s what it’s supposed to be like, hoss,” said Herring, whose team had an easier time with Rogers in last season’s play-off win (76-35). It’s supposed to be a 12-round fight and that’s what it was.

I feel terrible for both sides.

That was miserable for us, and I’m sure it was just as miserable for them. No one is supposed to lose a game like this, but I just feel blessed the football gods shined on us tonight.”

The great Southern General Stonewall Jackson once said, “You may be whatever you resolve to be.” Cal has proved that good things do happen to good people, and you’ve got to believe that Cal has accomplished so much more than he ever dreamed, in the game he loves so much.

Turtles continued from A1 these cold, helpless turtles. Thanks to the hard work of network personnel and several citizens, 62 cold stunned turtles were found state-wide. Nearly all of those were found alive and taken to rehabilitation facilities. Given time to warm, the vast majority of those rescued will likely survive rehabilitation and ultimately be released.

Twenty-four of the cold stunned turtles were found locally. We send a big thank you to Karen and Dave Everett who searched the Upper Laguna Madre by boat in very cold conditions.

Thank you also to several others that searched by boat and foot, transported turtles to rehabilitation, and are caring for the turtles now. Most of those held locally are being cared for by Tony Amos and his volunteers at the ARK. A few are also being cared for by volunteers at the Sea Life Center on North Padre Island.

Elsewhere in the state, cold stunned turtles are being housed at the NOAA Laboratory in Galveston, Texas, Sea Turtle, Inc., and Gladys Porter Zoo and Aquarium.

A Christmas Carol

By Devorah Fox It’s said that there are no new stories, just new ways of telling them. That can even be said of a popular Christmas story, Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.” It’s the story of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation resulting from supernatural visits by Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Dickens mined his own childhood for the story but he also called on various Christmas stories and fairy tales that were familiar to his Victorian-era readers.

As a final LaPosada wrap up, you are invited to a Holiday Open House at the offices of the Padre Isles Property Owners Association. Stop by for cookies, cider and coffee. We would love to see you. You might even find a good book to read in your “spare” time!

Old trees The City will not be doing Christmas tree recycling at our offices this year. The Litter Critter will be in our parking lot on December 28 and 29. So, bring your trees to the Critter that weekend. DO NOT take the trees to the beach with the misguided belief that they will be used for dune protection. They stopped doing that quite a few years ago. Leaving them at the beach is dumping.

Be aware With the recent shooting of a burglar in the City this week, the police remind everyone to be aware of your surroundings. If you see something that doesn’t look quite right, call the police.

However, occasionally we find cold stunned turtles on Texas Gulf beaches, especially near the passes.

Fortunately, if cold stunned turtles are found soon after they become immobilized and quickly taken to a rehabilitation facility quickly, they can be saved and released when temperatures increase. The potential area where these turtles might be found is vast and help from both the public and volunteers is vital during these events so that we can save these helpless turtles.

Local Author Pens Western for the Modern Age

Drawing inspiration from his own experience growing up in South Texas, Stalcup says the setting is something that is very close to his heart.

I’m especially looking forward to it because I know it’s the theatrical debut for D. C. “Chip” Cooper who’s playing the Ghost of Christmas Past. It’s exciting when anyone has a “first.” I think it takes a lot of gumption to exercise untested muscles live in front of an audience, so don’t be surprised if I stand up and start a wave.

The Port Aransas Community Theatre is located at 2327 State Highway 361. Tickets can be purchased by going online to Brown Paper Tickets or by visiting Everything Beach Boutique at 600 Cut Off Rd. Suite 10 in Port Aransas on Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm.

Morning bus tours will be available for $25.00 per/person at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Self-guided tours will be between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM. The self-guided ticket is $20.00 and tour maps will be provided at the Community Center. Bus tours and selfguided tickets can be purchased at Mustang Island Art Gallery 2222 Hwy 361, Gratitude 316 N. Station Street and through our website www.portaransasgardenclub.org after Thanksgiving and on tour day at the Port Aransas Community Center. When Jack Stiler returns to The Lucky Star Ranch in South Texas, it is with a heavy heart. With a story of love, loss, sacrifice and mortality, Corpus Christi author Gary C. Stalcup offers a new Western fiction in “Wandering West”.

26th Annual Port Aransas Tour of Homes

Salle Ellis of Bandera, a long-time community theater participant who has been involved in various theaters and productions for many years, is the director.

First Friday December 6th from 5:30-7:30pm will be the Art Center’s annual Christmas Party. From 10:00 am to noon on Saturday December 7, we will deliver a presentation and training session to inform people about how they can help find and protect stranded sea turtles during these difficult events. The session will be held at the Seashore Learning Center Gymnasium. The gymnasium is the large building located on Encantada, near South Padre Island Drive and St. Andrews by the Sea Church. There is no cost to attend the session and you do not need to sign up in advance. We welcome attendance by the public, anyone that wants to volunteer with the Padre Island National Seashore Sea Turtle Program, and employees and volunteers from other agencies and rehabilitation facilities that aid in our area.

Please continue to watch for cold stunned sea turtles throughout the winter. If you find one, please immediately report it to us by calling 361-949-8173, ext. 226. If there is no answer, please call our after-hours cell phone at 361-876-8462. Please call even if you think that the cold stunned turtle is dead. At cold temperatures these turtles become very inactive and can appear to be dead when they are actually alive.

The Port Aransas Community Theater is offering yet another take on the popular story. The stage presentation “Ebby Scrooge” offers yet another telling of Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” story, this time with a very modern twist. Restaurant owner Ebby Scrooge is as mean and greedy as her distant relative, Dickens’s Ebenezer. There’s also a long-suffering employee in the form of Mrs. Cratchit, and Ebby’s dead partner Marla who comes to haunt her.

Our canal clean-up person found a dead dog floating in the Cruiser canal this week. Pet owners need to be careful and watch your animals. It looks like another cold front will be moving in this weekend. Please don’t leave your pets outside.

More cold weather is expected at the end of this week, and cold stunning could resume again then. Even if we are lucky and cold stunning does not occur during this cold front, it is just a matter of time before a severe front will once again impact these herbivorous turtles that inhabit our inshore waters for foraging. The bays and estuaries are relatively shallow and water temperatures there cool rapidly. There are few passageways from the Laguna Madre and Corpus Christi Bay to the Gulf of Mexico and when water temperatures drop drastically turtles in the bays become immobilized and cannot reach the few passageways to warmer Gulf waters. Thus, most of our cold stunned turtles are found in the bays, estuaries, or passes, or washed ashore on shorelines there.

Back Porch closes for season…

Can you believe it’s already December.

Where did the year go? Thanksgiving is over, Christmas and New Year’s are right around the corner and the Back Porch had their last hurrah last weekend. They ended their season with a final rally from our favorite party band, Cruise

Cruise Control played the Back Porch last Saturday.

Control, on Saturday night and a rousing round of Turkey Bowling on Sunday. I am very close to the people at the Back Porch and will count the days until they reopen in late February.

But, the Turkey Bowling was a hoot this year. I may have mentioned (a couple of dozen times) that I was the reigning champ from last year.

Almost 80 people competed for the title this year and I did make it to the second round, but some skinny kid from Dallas named Ashton ousted me. Nobody told me they let 14 year olds play… not sure about that. No, I’m not bitter but I do hang my head in defeat. It was all in good fun and they raised a few hundred bucks for the ARK in the process. Nobody got hurt and nobody got arrested. Special thanks to T-Joe and Ace for keeping the pins going… no easy task. I did it last year because T-Joe was sick and I was sore for a week. Also to Mayor Keith for MC’ing the marathon and sweet Cherise Torbett for keeping score. It felt a little Mayor Keith and weird that Susan Powell wasn’t running Cherise Torbett around all over the at the Back Porch place. Sure miss that Turkey Bowling last gal!

I’ve been all over town lately and have a few things to report. Kip Shannon over at The Gaff is building a new stage in the front of his place. It will be an alternative site for smaller shows that will keep the noise levels directed to the front. He’s doing his part to be a good neighbor. Over at Giggity’s I heard that they will soon be having an open mic hosted by local songstress, Melissa Brooke. I may have jumped the gun reporting that one, but I know for a fact that Melissa is fired up about it. I think that’s a very sound marriage there. I also know that Giggity’s recently hired island bartending icon, Amber Glasscock, and she has started a knitting group at the club called “The Knitwits”.

Hmmmm… tequila and yarn…sounds like dangerous combination. Also over at Giggity’s, I heard they are gearing up for the Winter Texan migration and have a couple of oldies dance

The PA Rockers will be back in town soon with some personnel changes. bands in the works, scheduled to play early during the week. More on that as it develops. I also heard from the Winter Texan band, the PA Rockers, who play Bernies every Wednesday each winter and they’ve had some trying times for a couple of the band members. Keep Mark Munson, the founder and drummer of the Rockers from Minnesota, and guitarist, John Boeckler from Wisconsin, in your thoughts and prayers. They both have health issues that will keep them at home this season. It’s my understanding that in their place locals, Deb Dault will be drumming and Steve Goldstein will again add his talents on guitar and vocals as well as local legend, Woody Lawson, on bass and vocal. And of course Rocker’s front man, Colorado Bob Reed, will be back. They will get their Bernie’s shows going around the first of January and plan to concentrate on more Brit Rock. I really look forward to seeing all of my Winter Texan friends. They make winters a very special time on the islands. Also, Frostbite Betty will be cranking her column out in the Moon right after the new year and her presence is always a treat. She does a great job of reporting all the cool stuff going on in the world of Winter Texans. And finally, I hate to have to report this, but everyone be especially mindful to lock your cars and ladies, don’t leave your purses lying around unattended this holiday season. There have been some incidents in local watering holes and on the beach lately where some thieving has happened right under our noses. The police were called and security cameras were rolling, so I know at least one of the thieves has been identified. Just be careful… it’s that time of year. They walk amongst us.

Jul and the Chrome Wheels with Bron Doyle on congas played Shorty’s last weekend.

And speaking of jumping shows, Jul and the Chrome Wheels (Austin, TX) put on a couple of super happening shows over at Shorty’s last weekend. They had the help of local percussionists, Bron Doyle and Dillon Stowe, which really helped to put their energy over the top. This band consists of a husband and wife team, Brandon and Julie Jolley, who are born entertainers. They had the joint smokin’ both nights and are fast becoming the hit of the island. It was also a lot of fun jamming with them at the Ice House on Sunday. Their presence at the Sunday Picker’s Circle really made an impression. I’ve said it before, Shorty’s is about the coolest place on the island for down home, foot stomping good times. Jul and Brandon will be back on January 3-4.

Melissa Brooke Band pulls a double…

Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters played Giggity’s last Saturday.

Also last weekend, our pal Todd Dorn (San Antonio, TX) graced us with another great show at Giggity’s. His band the Sea Drifters consisted of Woody Lawson on bass and Oscar Rios on drums. I didn’t make it over there until Jul’s show ended at Shorty’s but there was still plenty

I saw some great shows last week. The Melissa Brooke Band played a couple of shows back to back at the Back Porch and Giggity’s last weekend. I was first apprehensive that both shows wouldn’t be well attended, being so close to each other, but will be the first to admit that the dynamic Miss Brooke more than held her own.

Both shows had good crowds, considering the time of year. Brooke has added a new member to the MBB in the way Eddie Dickerson on fiddle. Son, let me tell you… that boy can flat saw a fiddle. He has a forceful personality on stage and more than carries his weight in the vocal department, too. This unit is turning into a real force to be reckoned with. They’ll be back at Giggity’s on December 28th. I have a feeling that’s going to be a jumping show.

of action going until the wee hours. I know I gave the dance floor a pretty good workout… thanks Mandy! Dorn is a smooth as silk country crooner who plays a majority of originals with catchy hooks and boot scootin’ rhythms. He’s pretty dern good.

Ray Wylie Hubbard will play the Third Coast Theater this Saturday night.

Red Dirt music sensation, Wade Bowen (Waco, TX) will play a show with Brian Keane at Brewster Street, tonight, Thursday the 5th. Bowen has been on the circuit for about ten years and has a half dozen recordings under his belt.

He runs with the Randy Rogers, Cody Canada, Brandon Rhyder tribes.

Brian Keane is an up and coming Nashville recording artist who Brian Keane will has been turning heads. open for Ray He will also be opening Wylie Hubbard at the show at Third Coast the Third Coast Theater on Saturday for Theater this Ray Wylie Hubbard. I’ve Saturday. never seen Brian Keane but if Ray Wylie and Jim Urban like him, so do I. I gave the Ray Wylie show a pretty strong preview in my last column, but in case you missed it… you’re a damn fool if you miss this show. Of course the theater only holds 125 people so if you try to get in and can’t because it’s sold out, you are forgiven. ♫ ♪ And that’s the truth! ♪♫
