The grand main stair hall in Drayton Hall showcases a magnificent hand-carved mahogany balustrade. One of the most striking details of the staircase is hand-carved brackets which feature intricately carved squash flowers. These squash flower brackets are the inspiration for the hand-carved bookends.

Indigo

During the mid-18th century, indigo became one of South Carolina’s most valuable export crops, second only to rice. The process of producing indigo dye was labor-intensive and unpleasant—freshly harvested leaves were carried to vats for fermentation, stirring, and beating, releasing a putrid odor and attracting swarms of mosquitoes. Once processed, the blue pigment was pressed into cakes or blocks for shipment. Historical records show that Drayton Hall cultivated and exported significant quantities of indigo during this period, relying on the forced labor and skilled knowledge of the enslaved. After the American Revolution, however, the market collapsed, and large-scale indigo production across the Lowcountry declined. This past summer, Drayton Hall’s Landscape Team revisited this history by growing and processing indigo on-site, acknowledging the labor and expertise of those who made its production possible.

Paper marbling is an art form that uses water or a viscous liquid called size as a surface for floating colors. Artists manipulate the colors to create swirling, stone-like designs, which are then transferred onto paper or fabric. Because no two patterns are identical, each marbled sheet is a one-of-a-kind creation often used in bookbinding, stationery, and calligraphy.

Garden House Oak
On October 1, 2022, during Hurricane Ian, Drayton Hall lost a legacy live oak estimated to be nearly 300 years old. Known as the Garden House Oak, this majestic tree once stood near John Drayton’s historic Garden House. Rather than turning the fallen oak into firewood or mulch, Drayton Hall is partnering with local artisans to transform its wood into unique, handcrafted pieces that honor its history. Custom pieces are available for commission, including tables, counter-tops, mantles, and flooring. Email us at publicrelations@draytonhall.org.
