Director’s Notes

Dear Evan Hansen is a musical that lives in a world that moves quickly. Where information travels fast, emotions travel faster, and the line between who we are and who we wish we were can blur in an instant. However, beneath the screens and technology is something far more familiar and universal to all generations.

At the centre of our story is Evan, a teenager navigating life with severe social anxiety, struggling to find his voice in a world that often feels overwhelming and isolating. It’s a tale of imperfect parents, human connection, and the complicated ways we try to protect one another. Though the world of the musical is unmistakably contemporary, the questions at its heart are eternal: Have you ever felt like you had no choice but to lie? What does it mean to truly see someone? And what happens when we don’t?

Alongside our professional acting company, you’ll meet 22 talented teenagers performing as our youth chorus, split into two teams of 11, alternating shows. This is not only an extraordinary learning experience for these young artists but also adds a layer of immediacy and authenticity to the story — reminding us that the themes of this musical are not abstract; they are unfolding all around us, in real time.

Welcome to Evan’s world; a place where connection is constant, silence can feel deafening, and the smallest act of kindness can change the trajectory of a life. Thank you for being here.

Two Actors Are Sharing The Role Of Evan Hansen - Schedule
