Early morning gunshots are a rarity in Tongala, but the usual pre-7am silence was respectfully broken last month as part of a special addition to the Anzac Day commemoration service on the Village Green
New Tongala RSL member Carl Webster was responsible for coordinating the Volley Fire Salute component of the ceremony, joined by his brother and two other passionate firearm collectors from the region Carl and his team were in high demand this year. Not only did they complete the traditional tribute in Tongala, but they also took part in similar services at Mooroopna and Dookie later the same day Their involvement follows previous years of participation in Shepparton, Mooroopna, and Dookie commemorations
Carl, who lives in Kyabram, is the secretary of the Northern Victorian Arms Collectors Guild. In addition to their Anzac Day involvement, the group also hosts an annual military expo in Shepparton, with a proud history spanning over 50 years in the region. He describes the group as “a bunch of enthusiasts who predominantly collect antique military rifles ”
Among Carl’s collection are two 303 rifles both used in World War I and World War II. The .303 rifle, officially known as the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE), was the standard issue weapon for British and Commonwealth forces
number stamped on the receiver, bolt, and nose cone When refurbished, parts from various rifles were combined, so most now bear mixed serial numbers.
Rifle owners can trace the origin and date of their firearm through the stamp on the butt Carl’s BSA rifle s

Tongala commemorated Anzac Day with a mid-morning muster, march, and moving service that brought the community together in reflection and respect The service featured a heartfelt address by guest speaker Lieutenant Sean Rathjen, music from Pure Drop, bugler Mark Turner and pianist Jodie Weeks, a performance by John Rochford, and beautiful contributions from students of Tongala Primary School - Lucas, Ava, Scarlett and Billy - and St Patrick’s Primary School - James, Lil, Angie and Archer.
Meet Zepon
My name is Zepon Solsmon. I am from Papua New Guinea.
There are 22 provinces in PNG I lived in the Central Province, which is the coastal side where we have access to fishing.
So back home in my country, I was not in the working-class category
Our everyday work was fishing Fishing was the only thing that brought food back to the house.
Dad would go out fishing, and when he came back, Mum would go sell the fish at the market
After receiving money from selling the fish, she would then buy food for the house. So that was how our families’ lives are Most of the families living on the coastal side are surviving through fishing
I could say fishing is the best hobby because it gives you the pleasure of selffulfillment
When fishing, you respect your outdoor environment. Apart from fishing, I love writing songs, singing, and playing volleyball and rugby Back home, our lives were very difficult, so I decided to come over to Australia. I followed the process of going overseas patiently, and I was then selected to come work in Australia
Thank God I am currently working at the Greenhams company in Australia. The reason for me to come work in Australia is to look after my family, to provide, support, and save money to further my education and to start a small business for th better future.
My aim for working in Australia is to achieve the goals I have planned What surprised me the mos about living in Australia is the random acts of kindness.
The people I am around are so kind!

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, ‘Connecting Communities’ , is a powerful reminder of the many ways volunteers enrich lives, build relationships and help create thriving, inclusive places to live Volunteering is not just about giving time it’s about forging connections, fostering belonging, and strengthening the very fabric of our towns
Here in Tongala, we are lucky to be surrounded by generous, communityminded individuals whose
Connecting
quiet contributions make a world of difference
At the heart of our community is the Tongala Op Shop, where 15 dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to support local organisations through the sale of quality pre-loved goods
From clothing and books to toys, puzzles and furniture, every item is checked and prepared with care
More than just a shop, it’s a vibrant hub of activity, connection and purpose and the funds raised go straight back into the
community, filling the gap left by the closure of the local CWA branch
Long-serving volunteers like Ev, Margie and Lori Hazelman, alongside Secretary/Treasurer Catherine and others, continue to make a lasting impact, including sponsoring scholarships for both local primary schools.
Over at the Tongala Community Activity Centre, volunteers are transforming lives every day tending to gardens, supporting daily programs, running events, and
making our town a better place through their tireless care and compassion Their efforts don’t go unnoticed, and the community is deeply grateful
Meanwhile, Tongala Seniors at Cavell St is a bustling hive of goodwill
Volunteers serve meals, run Bingo, sell raffle tickets, pay the bills, and offer a warm welcome to new members
Whether it’s helping with cleaning up after Wednesday lunch, putting the bins out, or simply

communities
offering a listening ear, every small act of service keeps the wheels turning and the community connected.
The Tongala Fire Brigade is powered entirely by volunteers operational firefighters and support members who give their time to keep us safe. Whether they’re responding to emergency calls, attending local events, or educating our schools about fire safety, they’re always ready to help
And while not every volunteer responds to every
call, each one plays a vital role in making sure the truck rolls when needed
New volunteers are always welcome, and Monday night training is the perfect time to get involved
Of course, volunteers are the heartbeat of every local
club and cause
From the Tongala Football Netball Club to the cricket and bowls clubs, from Girl Guides and Lions Club to church groups, Respect Tongala Memorial agedcare, and the parents and friends associations at our
schools our town runs on volunteer power
This National Volunteer Week, we say a heartfelt thank you to all those who give their time, energy and care so generously You are the reason Tongala thrives

All three remain close and make time to get together as a family whenever they can Julian now lives in Geelong, Nicholas in Melbourne, and Marika is a well-known identity in Tongala, having worked with Tongala Aged Care (now Respect) for many years Sadly, mum Rosemary passed away in 2019, but she would be incredibly proud of her much-loved children and five grandchildren Dad Phil celebrates this important milestone with deep gratitude for what he calls a very special gift.

Gaga Gaga
Up until recently, if you had mentioned the words Gaga Pit to me, I would have thought it referred to a new Lady Gaga product or perhaps somewhere people acting unusually were sent for treatment
Wrong Gaga Pits are actually the home of a game that originated in Israel in the 1970s proving my theory that everything that was once cool eventually becomes cool again

Proudly hosted by the Kyvalley Swimming Club Inc with support from Campaspe Shire Council, the event welcomed locals and visitors alike for a delicious morning tea, raffles, lucky door prizes, and a charming display of
yesteryear treasures
Among the special guests was Mrs Margaret Steddar, a highly respected former resident of Kyvalley, who often shares how she still holds the town close to her heart Margaret was photographed with Sharon Hopkins from the “Glamorous Seenagers” chapter of the Red Hat Society, both enjoying the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the day
Early development years
The Tongala Railway Station opened in 1887, quickly becoming a community hub In its early years, the Railway Goods Shed well known for its good flooring played host to many social dances.
With the formation of the Shire of Deakin in 1893, Tongala’s growth continued, and by 1912 it was officially proclaimed a town A Public Hall was constructed to support the growing community, located at the western end of the presentday hall Remarkably, this original section still stands today
As the town evolved, the Shire of Deakin repurposed the Public Hall using part of the space for Council offices and the remainder as a community hall
The original brick Shire Office building was later sold to Mr Arthur Raybould of Kyvalley, who went on to build a garage on the adjoining block In March 1928, nearly a century ago, the Kyabram Free Press reported on the Deakin Shire Council’s decision to move away from petrol lighting At that month’s meeting, Mr A E Castles C.E. was authorised to obtain cost estimates for electric lighting in both the new Shire Offices and the Public Hall While the new offices had already been wired, additional work was required to bring electricity to the Hall marking an important step in the town’s modernisation – Item provided by the Tongala History Group

Finding our feet, one
Five weeks into the season, we’re not exactly where we’d like to be, and the next month is looking pretty tough
The good news is that the next four games three against teams inside the top six will give us a clear indication of our improvement
One of the highlights this season has been the number of young players who’ve been given their chance at senior level
The latest debutant was Elijah Swiggs, who came on after half-time in the Moama game and made a real impression.
Elijah is one of our Under-17 players used as the senior substitute a role only allowed to enter the game after half-time unless there’s an injury. He played on the wing and follows in the footsteps of Zeke Neumann (who played two games) and Jedd Turpin
Jedd was particularly impressive and kicked a ripping goal with his first touch in senior footy.
Speaking of teenagers, Max Trigwell joined us from
action.
honour the memory of their baby, Rubi Rae Davie, taken far too soon
The Moama game offered the perfect stage for the tribute, with Sam now playing for us and Alysha a former Moama player
Mick Jones Men’s Health Day
Remembering Mick Jones always brings a smile, and apparently, the half-time Over 45s game did exactly the same for the crowd a few weeks back.
Darwin this year and debuted against Nathalia in Round 3 He’s from Nightcliff where several of us have played in recent years and is spending the year in Victoria on a gap year. He’s working at GTS with Jordan “Cat” Souter, so say g’day if you get the chance Max has fitted in really well and even had a visit from his dad for the Moama game
Absent-minded captain It’s always a good idea to
look inward before pointing the finger in the locker room
Last weekend, I told the boys the wrong direction after losing the toss and then, just before the first bounce, realised I still had my watch on Not my finest moment!
A splash of red for Rubi
It still amazes me how invested our players and supporters become when someone in our community needs support.
Everyone got behind Sam Davie and Alysha Gill to
The sprint and kick competition made headlines, especially when Kizza Brennan did both hamstrings during the sprint.
As has become tradition at our first home game of the season, the Vick family presented the Most Determined Reserve and Senior Player awards in honour of Jayden “Fanta” Vick.
Alex Williams took out the senior title and Mark Watson the reserves
Club Ball – Three Votes S. Cipriani
I must congratulate everyone involved in the Once in a Blue Moon Ball easily one of the best venues I’ve seen for the event.
Here are my best dressed, 3-2-1 style:

2 votes – Jimmy Coulson. He wasn’t sure what to wear (he’s normally a cowboy gear guy) but nailed it He also had a breakout game

Sticking together off the field
Last weekend, a hea boys got together to the Kyabram v Echu game something keen to do more oft Cam Ilett made our game catch-up bef Moama game even by flying down early Darwin and cooking on Thursday night. He made an epic pa feed, the same one cooks for his kids larger quantities! Recognising our volunteers
Volunteers Week (M 25) is a great chanc shout out the people who make life as captain so much easier.
Stuart Northausen has been our team manager my entire six years and is fantastic
Kizza usually umpires the reserves (pre-hamstrings), and Tristan Kreymborg, our footy manager, does so much behind the scenes
And of course, there's Daniel Cox
Thank you to them and all the volunteers for everything you do.
Another Souter on way
Yes, there’s another Souter Barney He has his gear ready for
every game and is keen step up at a moment’s notice, even with four ye of Under-10s footy left!
Barney never misses training and always brings his kit, just in case someone pulls out.
