TraditionallyAustraliawasa powerhouseindairyexportsandin thelate1980stheAustraliandairy industrysuppliedaround16percent oftheworld’sdairyproducts Thishasfallentoaroundsixpercent today
InaspeechtoParliamentinApril1986, JohnKerin(whoIbelievewasoneof ourbestAgricultureMinisters)neatly summarisedtheagriculturaldilemma whenhesaid:“Worldpricesarethe problem”
TariffprotectionintheUSandthe EuropeanEconomicCommunitywas crushingAustralianproducers, however,thegovernment’sagenda wastopushonwithreform. Naivelytheythoughtwewouldlead therestoftheworldinreducing agriculturalprotection
OnJuly1,2000,thedairyindustrywas deregulatedbyJoeHockey,then MinisterforFinancialServicesand Regulation.
ThisfollowedthefindingsoftheHilmer Report,whichdiscernedtherewasno publicbenefitinretainingthefixed pricesupportfordairyondomestic consumption(badluckforthedairy farmers).
