10 October 1949 - 1 February 2025
On behalf of the Staff and Board of Community Bank Tongala, we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable individual, John Charles Bentley – affectionately known as JB. A dedicated community leader, JB was an instrumental part of the Board of Community Bank Tongala & Mathoura, serving with distinction and unwavering commitment
JB joined the board as a Director on 30 January 2014, and in 2019, he stepped into the role of Deputy Chair before becoming Chairman in 2020 His leadership, vision, and tireless efforts helped shape the bank’s direction, ensuring its continued support of the local communities he so deeply loved.
Beyond his significant contributions to the bank, JB’s presence was felt across numerous community activities and organisations Whether cheering from the sidelines at local football and netball matches or lending his support to cherished local events like the Mathoura Speed Shear and the Mathoura and Tongala Bowls Club Tournaments, JB’s passion for community spirit was unparalleled
His dedication extended far beyond sports, as he played an active role in various community groups and initiatives JB held the position of Trust Member and Secretary at Tongala Cemetery, was a life member and volunteer at the Tongala Football Netball Club, and supported many local organisations, including:
Social Member and Volunteer at Tongala Cricket Club
Member and Volunteer at Tongala RSL
Member and Volunteer at Tongala Community Activities Centre
Volunteer at Friends of Tongala Aged Care
Member and Supporter of Mathoura Football Netball Club
Member and Volunteer at Echuca Moama Arts Initiative
Member and Supporter of Melbourne Football Club
Volunteer at Voices for Nicholls
Passionate supporter of local schools, attending annual presentation nights to give out awards
Most recently supported the Boys to the Bush program at both Tongala P.S and St Patrick's Tongala
JB’s contributions to the community were immense, and his impact immeasurable
His kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to making a difference in the lives of others have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John Charles Bentley was one of a kind a true community champion whose presence will be deeply missed but whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched
Rest in peace, JB.
With heartfelt gratitude and condolences,
The Staff and Board of Community Bank Tongala
