ello to all members of Drama Victoria! It is a great privilege to join this wonderful organisation as your new Director of Programs. Your outgoing Director of Programs, Fiona Bechtold, has left me with very big shoes to fill! I am so excited to be surrounded by like-minded peers who share my passion for drama, theatre and the performing arts. I come to you following nine years as the inaugural General Manager of Entertainment Assist, a national health promotion charity that raises awareness about mental health and wellbeing in the Australian entertainment industry. I established Entertainment Assist as a champion of change, drawing on research, education and training initiatives, identification of appropriate resources and promotion of appropriate mental health practices in performing arts and entertainment industry workplaces. I hope to share some of my learning with you over the coming years. The importance of drama and theatre in education is significant. Enabling students to create and be creative is a life skill. And, creativity matters as a life skill at any age and in every industry because it’s fundamental to navigating the shifts inherent in our modern world and the unknowns of the future of work. I attended the 2019 Drama Victoria Conference and was blown away by the enthusiasm and engagement of all who attended. I can’t wait to build on that experience and, in conjunction with the Drama Victoria Committee of Management, provide professional learning that stimulates and enhances your teaching practice. Thank you to Fiona Bechtold for her work in preparing this calendar of events allowing me time to settle into my new role and learn the “business” of Drama Victoria. As a passionate arts practitioner, administrator and advocate, I look forward to working with you, learning with you, and raising the value and profile of drama and theatre within your schools.

Always the perennial favourite, this year’s Jumpstart miniconference will, once again, bring together a choice of hands-on workshops designed to wake you up, get you motivated and enrich your classroom. Running over two days – join us for one or both. VCE teachers will get the opportunity to delve deeper into the study designs with our VCE workshop stream, exploring practical activities and curriculum planning. Middle years teachers will find a range of exciting workshops to inspire engaging classroom practice.
Drama and the Cross-Curriculum Priorities will show you how easy it is to link Drama to your planning and developing of units of study. Experiential learning at its best! Exploration of an Action Learning model will show you how to design units that use Drama as a pivot for stimulus or reflection lessons. The Drama Victoria Theatre Festival is back to inspire and enrich students from across the state! Celebrating excellence and diversity in drama, the DVTF sees hundreds of Year 9 and 10 students come together to work with teaching artists who facilitate their creative development. The Festival focuses on the creative development of young theatre makers by giving them an opportunity to explore ideas with their peers, learn new ways of approaching performance, learn about first nation perspectives and expand their creative engagement, through drama, with the community around them.

In this workshop you’ll learn about autism; the benefits and complexities of drama/theatre participation for autistic and other neurodivergent people. You will gain both theoretical understanding and practical knowledge that can be used to create truly neurodiverse-friendly drama classrooms and productions. This in-depth workshop has been created by A_tistic, a neurodiverse-led theatre, education and access consultancy organisation. Using their style of Spectrum Theatre, they aim to bring autistic lives, insights and experiences to the stage. Devising an original ensemble work can be a difficult task for many students. Selecting and combining conventions from a range of eclectic performance styles, responding to stimulus, playmaking, rehearsing, editing refining…it’s a big task to undertake and it can be hard for students to let go of all their ideas and their script to make final choices. In this intensive devising workshop, we will focus on a physical and practical exploration of playmaking processes, creating material for a Unit 1 or 3 ensemble performance. Depending on where you are at in the process of devising, you may choose to bring your own ensemble stimulus/structure, or you can use one provided by Drama Victoria. This workshop provides a great opportunity to work collaboratively, to share work with students from other schools, and for teachers to network and share their own experiences of teaching an ensemble process. Wednesday 18 March, 1pm-4pm Geelong Arts Centre This three hour hands-on creative workshop will provide participates with a unit of work for each primary grade that is linked to the Vic Curric, as well as rubric and assessments information, tips for differentiating the curriculum, ideas for engaging mixed ability students, and ways of working with Indigenous stories and theatrical concepts meaningfully across the primary years. This workshop is appropriate for brand new teachers of drama, and experienced teachers looking to freshen up their program. The arts provide a unique opportunity for children and young people to reimagine themselves and their communities in the wake of disaster. Research informed practical ways of working in and through the arts, drama in particular, are offered to teachers across primary and secondary schools. Commedia dell’Arte Student Day: Tricks of the Trade for Solo Performance! Presented by Rosa Campagnaro – Make A Scene
Saturday 30 May, 9am – 12pm Abbotsford Convent Rosa Campagnaro will get students moving and playing in this practical and physical comedy workshop based on the Italian tradition, Commedia dell’Arte. A style that originated in Italy in the 16th century and developed into a physical theatre style with larger-than-life archetypes. Conventions for this style include: stock characters, masks, improvisation and slapstick routines. Students will learn commedia stock characters and simple playmaking techniques to build their own solo performances. Everyone is encouraged to bring their solo performance ideas and most importantly, ‘bring your silly’! Get Your Bouff-On: A Masterclass in the Wild & Liberating Art of Grotesque Satire Presented by Emily Goddard
Monday 18 May, 5pm – 8pm Abbotsford Convent Bouffon is an ancient performance tradition that has been used across cultures for centuries. In short, a style of ‘grotesque satire’ in which outcasts mock their oppressors. The parody is clever, designed to charm the audience and then ruthlessly target what is imbalanced in the culture at large. Exploring Bouffon is a fun and liberating way for Drama students to increase their spontaneity and push themselves to discover new possibilities, as well and encouraging them to think about ways theatre can politically engage with the world around them. Participants will be taken through a series of performance games and activities examining the basic techniques of Bouffon and how they can be used to ignite and challenge students in both performance, ensemble building and devising. This will be an exploration of an ancient performance method for the contemporary stage, and allow participants to discover new possibilities for fostering a greater sense of courage, freedom and unity in their students. School Drama Hub brings together a small group of primary teachers from Victoria for two days of intensive professional learning workshops. The program develops a community of practice where teachers learn drama strategies, apply their learnings in the classroom and are mentored by experts in the field. School Drama Hub features practical approaches to teaching the Victorian Curriculum: Foundation - 10. Participants explore how authentically integrating and connecting English and Drama can lead to rich teaching and learning opportunities and improved student outcomes. Teachers will see the powerful transformative nature of drama across the curriculum. This is a valuable professional development opportunity for primary teachers who are preparing to teach The Arts (Drama) for the first time, Drama Teachers, and those who are more experienced.
