President’s Welcome 2018 has been an exciting and productive year for Drama Victoria. We celebrated our 50th birthday milestone, launched our new logo and website, unveiled our Archive Project and hosted the Drama Australia Conference. Our National Conference afforded our members the opportunity to engage with our interstate colleagues to learn, share, inspire and play. Our conference theme - ‘CONTINUUM: Drama education past, present and future’, allowed us to reflect on our past 50 years as an association and contemplate where we are headed in the future.
Our 2019 Calendar will also offer our regional members many opportunities to bridge the tyranny of distance via webinars and industry partnership workshops that will tour to regional areas. We will also continue to develop our new website with member resources and opportunities. Our Drama Victoria Theatre Festival will be reinvigorated – working with multiple Universities and High Schools across Victoria. We will also be putting our archival information and MAMA interviews online so that they are able to be easily accessed by all of our members.
With that in mind, we are pleased to release our 2019 Calendar of Events which will see Drama Victoria continue to offer a host of professional development opportunities that will be of the highest possible standard. You can be confident in the knowledge that our workshop facilitators have the skills and experience to deliver engaging and relevant professional learning opportunities. With two new VCE study designs coming into implementation in 2019 we are going to kick off the year with a TWO DAY Jumpstart conference (February 22 & 23) that will have a strong focus on workshops relating to the new study designs for Drama and Theatre Studies.
I would particularly like to thank our incredibly hard working and committed Drama Victoria staff. Our Director of Programs - Fiona Bechtold - has curated our 2019 Calendar of Events and is instrumental in navigating the direction of our association. Our Administrator - Suzie Martens – continues to ensure our safe passage. Our staff are the heart and soul of our association and we are incredibly fortunate to have them on board. We are also incredibly lucky to have a Committee of Management that is made up of a diverse range of experienced and dedicated Drama and Theatre Studies educators who are entirely committed to serving our members. Their perseverance and work ethic is extremely inspiring.
We will also offer an extensive range of professional learning opportunities throughout the year, as we continue to focus on unity through diversity. Drama Victoria will invest in professional development that assists teachers in the implementation of programs that promote acceptance and understanding through dramatic exploration. This will enable teachers to equip their students with the knowledge and skills to participate in, and contribute to, our diverse society as active and informed citizens. We are pleased to announce that our 2019 conference theme will be ‘Unity through Diversity celebrating & exploring inclusivity through Drama Education.’
Finally I would like to thank you, our members. Whether you have been a member of Drama Victoria for one year or fifty, you have been the inspiration for the resources and workshops that we develop and present each year. Monday 25th March 1.30pm – 4.30pm Abbotsford Convent The Australian Curriculum is designed to help all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. Presented as a developmental sequence of learning from Foundation - Year 10, the Australian Curriculum describes to teachers, parents, students and others in the wider community what is to be taught and the quality of learning expected of young people as they progress through school. (ACARA 2014) However, the Australian Curriculum itself doesn’t describe ‘how’ teachers will develop curriculum or learning programs for their students. For every component of Australian Curriculum: The Arts – Drama, there are a myriad of teaching approaches that will work. This workshop will introduce options and ideas for developing learning programs that deliver required curriculum outlines, take advantage of local resources and address local concerns. $40pp Ideal For: F-10 Drama Teachers
The best way to learn about devising is to do it! In this workshop, Chris Beckey will lead participants through a devising process, elucidating various phases of and drawing on various techniques for the process of devising theatre. Dramaturgy PD: A View from the Bridge Exclusive event for Drama Victoria members hosted by MTC Tuesday 19 March Seminar: 4.30pm, @ MTC HQ Performance: 6.30pm, @ Southbank Theatre Drama Victoria members are invited to an exclusive PD seminar with MTC creative artists to gain insight into dramaturgy of Arthur Miller’s classic America tragedy ‘A View from the Bridge’. Learn more about the dramaturgical process and how it can be taught and applied in your classroom. The evening includes a light meal and refreshments, and a ticket to the MTC production. Drawing on his experience of physical theatre, encompassing traditional and contemporary Japanese methods and European traditions, Beckey will open up a number of exercises which will help you explore physical theatre with your students at various stages of a project:

Contexts are what make up the ‘world’ of a play, and the ‘world’ in which the play was created. Understanding context allows students to re-contextualise, to draw out key themes, concerns, intentions and re-imagine the characters in a new world, while honouring the themes, concerns, and intentions of the original work. This workshop explores approaches to recontextualising using a range of scripts, and taking a practical approach. It focuses in the main on VCE Theatre Studies but is also suitable for teachers working with Years 9 and 10.
Now in their 9th year, these workshops have galvanised student understanding around the VCE Solo and Stagecraft exams and provided some much needed motivation to over 2000 students to date.

Now in its fifth year the Drama Victoria Theatre Festival is back to inspire and enrich students from across the state! Celebrating excellence and diversity in drama, the DVTF sees hundreds of Year 9 and 10 students come together to work with teaching artists who facilitate their creative development, giving them opportunities to workshop ideas with their peers, learn new ways of approaching performance and, most importantly, to discover new creative perspectives to expand their engagement with drama. Participating schools work will attend a “stimulus day” workshop at a University. The ideas and skills generated on this stimulus days will be the first step towards creating an original performance work that the students eventually share in ‘cluster performance groups’ hosted at local school venues.

An Introduction to Aesthetic Education - Strategies for helping young people engage deeply with live theatre. Hosted by Krystalla Pearce & Vanessa O’Neill Thursday August 15th 10am – 3pm Abbotsford Convent Join us for a day exploring the use of inquiry-based learning in your teaching practice. We will explore the benefits of encouraging students to go deeper in their observations in response to seeing theatre; to ask questions, and make connections. How can we foster these skills as habits of mind in our students so that they engage more deeply in their own work as artists and audiences? Inspired by Maxine Greene’s philosophy and Lincoln Center Education’s Aesthetic Education teachings, the session will be based around a live performance. All participants will view the live performance as well as participating in experiential workshops responding to the performance.
