American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer John Dewey said,

“Every great advance in science has issued from a new AUDACITY OF IMAGINATION. ” Dewey captured the spirit behind Drake’s $ 2 2 5 M I L L I O N campaign— an audacity of imagination. The Ones campaign empowers us to preserve Drake’s most cherished traditions while transforming our campus, our community, and higher education for an evolving world. The Ones Leading With Purpose CHANGEMAKING HAS ALWAYS BEEN AT THE CORE OF DRAKE’S IDENTITY. We believe that higher education is both a path to personal success and a springboard for students to use their knowledge and talents to make a positive difference in the world. Drake’s identity and beliefs attract students who aren’t afraid to question the status quo and take bold approaches to solving old and new challenges. Now we’re dedicating even more energy and purpose toward entrepreneurial programs and community engagement experiences. We’ll foster a new generation of students who will be the ones to find solutions to society’s most pressing concerns.

Support the ones who DO WELL by doing good. Drake University will educate the students the world needs most—those who do well by doing good. Your support of The Ones campaign will help students build the skills needed to improve their communities—whether they work in corporations, small companies, or nonprofits, or start their own businesses. Together, we can empower students to be changemakers who find success by leading or creating organizations that benefit the greater social, environmental, and economic good.

Helping others create life-improving change.

CHANGEMAKING IN ACTION Drake will help students cultivate a bias toward action that prepares them to lead in their careers and communities through intentional programming and learning opportunities. Here are ways some of our initiatives support this effort. The Drake University Social Impact Fund will create hands-on experiences that equip students to take the initiative to solve societal challenges. The Social Impact Business Incubator will enable Drake students, faculty, and staff to work alongside local entrepreneurs whose mission-based enterprises tackle social and environmental challenges and build community wealth. Changemaker Scholars will prepare to be catalysts for stronger communities through internships with community organizations and small businesses and participation in coursework dedicated to entrepreneurialism and social impact.

EVERY DAY, KATIE CARLTON PURSUES A PROFESSIONAL PASSION THAT WAS AWAKENED BY DRAKE’S ENGAGED CITIZEN CORPS. Through affiliation with AmeriCorps, the Engaged Citizen Corps allows first-year Drake students to work for a nonprofit while taking classes that broaden their perspectives. Katie worked with an organization that provided services to the blind. “In our weekly meetings within the Engaged Citizen Corps, we reflected on what we were doing and learning in our internships,” Katie said. “Sharing what I learned about disability advocacy and disability awareness opened my eyes.

It made me want to continue to do this work.” Katie worked for disability nonprofits throughout her Drake years. After graduating with degrees in public relations and advertising, she secured a job with one of the organizations she interned for. She’s now considering a return to Drake to advance her journey. “I see myself going back to Drake for my master’s,” Katie said. “I want to learn more about how to support people with disabilities in finding employment and meeting their independence goals.”

The Ones Revitalizing Democracy BY VIRTUE OF DRAKE’S UNIQUE STRENGTHS AND OPPORTUNITIES, we can help reclaim the American project of forming a more perfect union. At its heart, democracy is a collective, lived experience that requires an informed public, thoughtful discussion, and civility. Drake will stand boldly and bravely in creating a hub for democratic discourse. Through the work of our students, faculty, and collaborators, we will take on the great challenge of renewing a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Support the ones who CHAMPION government for the people, by the people. The Drake University Center for Public Democracy will work at the intersection of theory and practical application. It will create new opportunities for collaborative and novel approaches to advance public participation and civic leadership. The center will bolster exceptionally strong undergraduate and professional programs— including American politics; law, politics, and society; and legal education—solidifying Drake as the university of choice for students who seek careers in public service. Our students will help create the change our republic so desperately needs.

Thanks in part to Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus status, Drake University is a hub of political activity and highly respected as a leading voice for good governance. Your support of The Ones campaign will allow us to seize the opportunity to make Drake the essential institution for restoring our national capacity for democracy.

DRAKE UNIVERSITY STANDS AS A BEACON OF DEMOCRATIC KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND IMPACT. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication champions the First Amendment’s role as a guardian of democracy by promoting a robust, independent press. Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement serves as a nonpartisan collaborative space for policy makers, community members, and students to tackle today’s most pressing, complex, and vital issues. The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center is a global leader in applied research and programming in the areas of civility, character development, and ethical leadership. The Drake Law School Constitutional Law Center is one of just four centers throughout the nation established and funded by Congress to foster the study of the U.S. Constitution and its formation, principles, and development. The Drake Law School Legislative Practice Center combines coursework with legislative internships—providing students the invaluable opportunity to draft bills, lobby legislators, and attend subcommittee meetings. Vote Smart (votesmart.org) is the most trusted source for comprehensive and accurate information for any federal or state office holder or candidate in the United States.

He turns adversity into action. AT 12 YEARS OLD, ADAM KOCH COULD NO LONGER WALK. Crohn’s Disease had wreaked havoc on his body. Adam’s doctor prescribed a medication to ease his symptoms, but the insurance company denied coverage in favor of a cheaper drug. His doctor didn’t believe the cheaper drug would work, and indeed, an inflammatory side effect made it impossible for Adam to stand. After a bumpy road, Adam reached better health and eventually learned that his battle could have been easier. Many states have laws that prevent insurers from overriding a doctor’s recommendations based on cost savings. “Had a law like that been in place in Iowa, it could have prevented so much trauma for my family and me,” said Adam, former Drake student body president. “That knowledge spurred my interest in government advocacy.”

This passion led Adam to Drake. “I knew that if I wanted to get a wonderful political experience as a young adult, I had to go to Drake.” Today, thanks in part to his experience at the University, he leads the charge to help thousands with similar diseases. Adam serves as the co-chair of the National Council of College Leaders at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. He has met with legislators at both the state and federal level to advocate for legislation to help the millions of Americans living with digestive diseases and wrote a bill on the issue that made it to committee in the latest session of the Iowa Legislature. “There are still 12-year-olds who are too young and too sick to advocate for themselves,” Adam said. “I’m confident with my Drake education, I can create change for them.”

MEREDITH MOORE DIDN’T WANT TO TAKE A COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE IN HER FIRST YEAR AT DRAKE. Thanks to encouragement and mentorship from Drake professors, less than a decade later she was teaching one. “I think computer science was my tenth choice for my first-year seminar,” Meredith said. Her Drake professors immediately recognized her talent and encouraged Meredith to take additional classes. Soon she declared a computer science major and started the Women in

Computer Science club at Drake (now Women in STEM). Meredith graduated in 2015 with a double major in computer science and neuroscience. And yet, during the first day in her computer science doctoral program at a distant state university, a male master’s student asked if she was in the right room. Later someone left a note saying she belonged in a kitchen, not in a computer classroom.

Buoyed by her experiences and mentorship at Drake, Meredith persisted and earned her Ph.D. Her former Drake professors then recruited her back to Drake as an assistant professor. Today Meredith is the faculty sponsor of Drake’s Women in STEM club and looks forward to encouraging more women and minorities to study computer science. “If we’re trying to create a more equal workforce, it has to start in the classroom,” Meredith said.

Within the walls of Morehouse, students will hone new leadership skills, engage with community partners, and get plugged into the causes and issues they care about. This welcoming space will become the launch pad for the next generation of collaborators, change agents, and critical thinkers.

The Student Center in Morehouse is not just about physical space for student activities. It’s about creating a community that fosters the development of confident, cultured, and informed individuals. The Student Centewill be a place dedicated to the vibrant exchange of ideas, the celebration of intercultural communities, and the cultivation of knowledge. The Ones Strengthening the Heartland DRAKE IS UNIQUELY POSITIONED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN RURAL AMERICA. Even as Drake draws strength from its location within Iowa’s largest urban area, it’s in the geographic center of Iowa’s nearly 950 towns and cities. The Jay N. Darling Institute will allow Drake to partner with the people of the heartland to bolster the economic, social, and cultural vibrancy of rural America.

P R I O R I T Y: J AY N . D A R L I N G I N S T I T U T E

Support the ones who KNOW opportunity shouldn’t have a city limit. JAY N. DARLING A journalist and conservation activist, Darling is most famous for being a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Des Moines Register.

THE ONES | DRAKE UNIVERSITY

Darling’s footprint went well beyond his work as a cartoonist. He was passionate about advancing social change through journalism, art, and education. He was a tireless advocate for preserving America’s great natural ecosystems and the creator of the Federal Duck Stamp program, which has raised more than $1 billion for the protection of wetlands and wildlife habitats.

27

Darling’s core values fit perfectly with those of Drake University. His ability to build partnerships, produce results, and balance good business with quality of life and respect for nature makes Darling an ideal role model to inspire change for future generations.

The Darling Institute collaborates with rural communities to make them more sustainable, competitive in the global economy, and resilient for future generations. A signature initiative of the Darling Institute is the DarlingCorps, which empowers students and faculty to play a key role in leading effective, long-lasting change in rural communities. Under the supervision of faculty mentors, Drake students will bring renewal and innovation to a partnering rural community through a service or applied research project. Projects will address challenges within fields such as healthcare, food security, economic development, community improvement, justice, the performing arts, and natural resource management.

Helping those who fill the voids. WHEN THE GROCERY STORE CLOSED IN MANSON, IOWA, residents faced a 50-mile round trip to Fort Dodge for everything from ground beef to bananas and many more pantry staples. The store’s loss was more than the loss of a food source; it was the loss of an important economic driver. “People don’t come to town just to get groceries,” said Dave Anderson, Manson mayor. “They go to the hardware store; they get gas. They do all the things that they want to do while they’re in town. They do those things in your town instead of in another town. So, it’s a big part of the community.”

A committee of community members formed and convinced Manson’s economic development committee to purchase the old grocery store building. Knowing that a big return on investment was unlikely, the committee of community members resolved to set up a nonprofit. To help with this endeavor, the committee turned to Drake Law’s Entrepreneurial and Transactional Clinic. Drake Law students reviewed the lease agreements, set up the bylaws, filed the articles of incorporation, and counseled the committee in applying for taxexempt status—all pro bono.

Drake Law students provided the leg up Manson needed. The committee raised $190,000 in donations from town residents to fix up the store. Local carpenters, contractors, and electricians donated their skills, time, and resources. In November 2020, about a year after the old store shut down, Manson Hometown Grocery opened. This successful partnership illustrates the power and potential of the Darling Institute to be a resource for rural Americans, providing knowledge and support as they combat challenges facing their communities.

The Ones Creating Access to Opportunity DRAKE IS SHAPING NEW PATHWAYS TO EDUCATION THAT WILL LEAD TO A BETTER WORLD FOR US ALL. The time is ripe for a more robust model of higher education that fully embraces opportunity as a fundamental right. Drake will enhance programs and partnerships that connect every generation within our campus and sphere of influence. We will redefine the practice and purpose of a university by empowering individuals of all ages and from all backgrounds to enhance their lives and the lives of others through education.

John Dee Bright College— A two-year degree program that is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of a diverse cohort of students. Bright College’s innovative and distinctive curriculum provides hands-on, high-impact learning experiences and serves as an accelerator for career development.

Gregory & Suzie Glazer Burt Boys & Girls Club—Funding will support scholarships and programming to further strengthen the University’s relationship with the club and make Drake more accessible to its members.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Drake— Formerly the RaySociety, OLLI is a program designed for people ages 50 and older who seek opportunities for lifelong learning to enrich their lives in a collegial environment of sharing and fellowship.

Crew Scholars—Crew is one of Drake’s most successful programs designed to recruit, retain, and support students of color.

Taking the message of opportunity to the next generation. AS IN A TYPICAL CLASSROOM, Drake Associate Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication Chris Snider teaches writing, editing, and broadcast skills to a new generation of journalists. Unlike his typical class, these students are in middle school. Chris organized a week-long summer day camp for members of the Gregory & Suzie Glazer Burt Boys & Girls Club. His Drake undergraduate students are helping him teach. It’s a short walk for the kids to Meredith Hall from their new club on the Drake campus, across Forest Avenue from the Knapp Center. The lessons are being taught today because six years earlier, Suzie Glazer Burt made a phone call to Drake

President Marty Martin. Suzie thought more could be done to unite two organizations she believes in: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa and Drake University. ”My greatest, greatest desire is for every kid that is a club member to be a Drake University student. That is really my dream,” Suzie told The Des Moines Register in 2019. “This is a community, and it is a family.” Today, club members are learning from a Drake professor, in a Drake classroom. That’s just one example of how Suzie’s dream has brought a new generation of students into the Drake community and inspired new opportunities.

Secure the Future of Drake University Grounded in our institutional values and strengths, our campaign priorities represent a powerful vision that will transform our THE ONES | DRAKE UNIVERSITY

campus, students, community, and world.

39

Through your investment in the campaign, you will be the ones who help us achieve our ambitions. To realize the full potential of The Ones, we seek resources allocated in five areas.

STRENGTHENING STUDENT ACCESS AND OPPORTUNITY

Scholarship support will help Drake recruit, retain, and engage students whose interests and career aspirations align with our priorities and make the University affordable for the next generation. The Ones contains a defined commitment to expand access for students from underrepresented groups. GOAL: $60–$70 million

ENRICHING PROGRAMMING

New or evolved programming will provide students with powerful experiential learning that will prepare them for successful futures, including opportunities for internships, travel, service-learning, leadership, and community engagement. It will also advance Drake’s inspiration to transform lives and strengthen communities in Iowa and beyond. GOAL: $25–$35 million

WAYS TO GIVE: Endowed Funds—Your generosity will benefit Drake students for generations to come through an endowed gift. The endowment is a vital, continuous source of support that bolsters the resiliency of the institution. Resources are carefully invested, and the return on that investment provides the University with a permanent source of funding that grows over time. Restricted Funds—With a restricted gift, you can support specific initiatives, programs, or activities over a defined period of time to foster growth and achieve stability.

SUPPORTING TALENT

Investments in our faculty and staff through endowed positions, fellowships, research support, and professional development will ensure Drake has the leadership, knowledge, and expertise necessary to implement our campaign initiatives and maintain our exceptional academic environment. GOAL: $40–$50 million

FUNDING CAPITAL PROJECTS

The construction and renovation of buildings will enhance the student experience and elevate teaching and learning. While the Student Center and athletic facilities are the most prominent examples, capital support will also refresh classrooms, laboratories, and collaborative spaces. GOAL: $40–$70 million

BUILDING OUR COLLECTIVE STRENGTH Annual gifts to The Drake Fund fuel our mission promise and help Drake deliver a resilient education that lasts a lifetime. GOAL: $10–$12 million

Planned Giving—A planned gift through your estate will create an enduring legacy by providing meaningful financial support to Drake after your lifetime. You can make a planned gift through a variety of methods, including a bequest or living trust or by designating Drake as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, IRA, or other retirement plan. By notifying Drake of your intentions, you allow us to celebrate your contributions and ensure your vision will be fulfilled. Annual Support—Support of The Drake Fund helps meet the most immediate needs of the University, including scholarships, athletics, arts, leadership opportunities, the live mascot program, academic centers, Cowles Library, and each of our colleges and schools.
