Walsh Jesuit, a Catholic, college preparatory high school in the spirit of St. Ignatius Loyola, reaches beyond academic excellence to develop competence, conscience, and compassion within its graduates. As a Christ-centered community we value inclusion and strive to be men and women for and with others.

A Letter from our President

Please enjoy this annual report which chronicles what you and so many others have made possible through incredible generosity---for which we give thanks to God! Especially since we had to educate our great students remotely due to COVID-19 for nearly half the school year.

We simply could not do what we do in this important mission without the sacrifices and gifts of so many friends of the school. You answered the call when we needed it most, beginning with our first-ever virtual POWWOW and throughout the summer, and you helped students whose families experienced financial hardships to remain here at Walsh Jesuit by providing an anchor to secure their formation during trying times.

On behalf of the Walsh Jesuit Board of Directors and all whose vocation is to serve here daily, I thank you and I thank the Advancement team that inspires and stewards your generosity! The 24 Board members all volunteer their expertise in areas that support the mission. Through the implementation of the Strategic Plan with our superb faculty and staff, they work to grow the school in all areas of management, from Jesuit identity to academics to the financial health.

The highlight of the year for me was how the Class of 2020 came together to create a conclusion of time as Warriors that we adults will never forget. We were together on Thursday, March 12 for an after-school prayer service, and then not again until graduation day, one that none of us will ever forget.

And not only did the car parade/ diploma ceremony serve as a festive celebration of them becoming the Grad-at-Grad, but it also confirmed them as ‘Men and Women For and With Others’ as they came together once again and offered their unused class funds to help the returning students with financial issues. Like so many classes before them, they came from diverse backgrounds, races, and religions and proved that we are the Warriors, and the Warriors are one!

I am confident that with the continued good work of so many, our strategies for success will lead Walsh Jesuit to continue to work for God’s great glory, A.M.D.G. Blessings to you and know of my gratitude!

Walsh Jesuit High School Receives Estate Gift

The James and Catherine Howard Scholarship fund was established this past year by Walsh Jesuit in memory of two generous benefactors, James and Catherine Howard. The Howard gift was one of the largest estate gifts received by Walsh Jesuit in the 56 years since the school was founded in 1964.

The Walsh Jesuit High School Foundation oversees the school’s endowment and in 2020, $780,000 was distributed to the school from the endowment for tuition assistance and special programs. Due to the couple’s kindness, two qualified incoming students who demonstrate financial need will receive a scholarship in the Howards’ name.

James and Catherine Howard, of Newcomerstown, Ohio, were introduced to the Walsh Jesuit community by former WJHS board member, Judge Carla Moore, and her husband, Dr. Dan Wilson, DDS. Judge Moore and her husband invited the Howards to attend a President’s Reception which included the celebration of Mass and a tour of the school. The Holy Spirit was most certainly at work that day, bringing this couple into the WJ community.

During their introduction to the school, the Howards were so impressed by the quality of the collegepreparatory education, spiritual foundation, as well as intellectual and value formation students are taught at Walsh Jesuit, they became fervent donors.

That same visit, the couple met Mike Gladstone, longtime member of the Walsh Jesuit staff, and they remained in touch. Mr. Gladstone kept the couple apprised to the academic, spiritual, extracurricular, and athletic offerings available to WJ students.

“They were enamored with the Walsh Jesuit education and came to love it,” said Gladstone. “The Howards were so impressed with the academic rigor and what the school does for young people that they chose to invest significantly in the school.”

The Howards believed in the importance of a Jesuit education and wanted to ensure funding for scholarships for students of future generations who have financial need and who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend WJ. Catherine Rusk Howard, passed away in April of 2018, preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, James J. Howard in May of 2014. The couple included the school in their final wishes with their substantial estate gift to the endowment fund. Jim and Catherine Howard’s legacy will live on through future students who will be able to obtain the Jesuit education for which the generous benefactors were so passionate.

Melissa (Ludbeck) Kaptanian ‘95 “I was ill and you cared for me.” MATTHEW 25:30

Melissa (Ludbeck) Kaptanian ’95 arrived on the Walsh Jesuit campus as a junior transfer, one female student among thirteen that fall of 1993. A successful student at her high school and on her way to becoming class valedictorian, she dreamed of a career in medicine but did not see that many of her classmates had college aspirations. In her mind, the bold decision to attend the former all boys school offered an opportunity with a clear path to medical school.

It took some convincing, but Melissa’s father reluctantly took her to Walsh Jesuit for a visit and a meeting with principal, Mr. Bill Ricco. Living across the street from her high school and doing well academically, her father did not see a reason to transfer his daughter to a school 45 minutes from home.

“My father, who was not religious at all, asked Mr. Ricco, ‘Why should I send my daughter to this school?’

Mr. Ricco simply replied, ‘Because God is here.’ It was then that my father conceded and, on the way home the decision was made that I would attend Walsh Jesuit.” If it were not for that initial meeting and conversation with Mr. Ricco, Melissa believes she would not have attended Walsh Jesuit.

The rest, as they say, is history. “Nobody knew how to deal with girls back then. We bonded very quickly and because of the example the teachers and administrators set, the boys were incredibly welcoming,” Melissa reflected.

Crediting her Walsh Jesuit education as a formative experience, Kaptanian saw Walsh Jesuit teachers, administrators, and the Jesuit Community living their vocation among the students. The Jesuits had such a profound impact on Melissa’s early formation that she sought to further the Jesuit influence in medical school, attending Loyola University of Chicago following her undergrad at Cornell University.

“I was inspired daily by the words inscribed on the walls of the medical school at Loyola: ‘I was ill and you cared for me’ (Matthew 25:30),” Kaptanian shared. “The message was a call to care for those as Jesus did.”

“During this current climate of social unrest, I reflected on the parables and saw how Jesus touched individuals, such as raising Lazarus from the dead and healing a blind man by putting mud in his eyes,” Kaptanian said. “Jesus performed miracles on the individuals in front of him, and I realized I can’t change everything, but maybe I can do one thing for one person as we are called to do, and that might change the world. I felt powerless in front of the huge problem of racial injustice, and I knew I could do one thing to help.”

Inspired by scholarships and grants she received and her involvement on boards for several non-profits over the years, Melissa saw philanthropy in action and reached out to Walsh Jesuit with the goal of helping a student of color. After conversations with Advancement Officer Marion Drake, Melissa decided to become an Emmaus Tuition Sponsor. “I saw this as a gift and not a handout and an opportunity to change a life.”

THE CLASS OF 1998 B Y MAR IO N DRAKE Nearly twenty years after Walsh Jesuit made the decision to move from an all-boys Jesuit high school to the only co-educational Jesuit high school in Ohio, members of the Class of 1998 came up with an idea to help students in need.

Spearheaded by classmates and now scholarship fund chairs, Kevin Gladstone ‘98, Steve Guba ‘98, Sarah (Helsel) Schrag ’98 and Dan Schrag ’98, the Class of 1998 Emmaus Scholarship became a reality in 2015.

Since its inception, over $66,000 has been raised by twenty-nine donors allowing the class to sponsor two Emmaus Sponsorship students, one who graduated in 2020 and another who will graduate in 2021. The ’98 alums are very close to their goal of sponsoring a new student who will enter the class of 2025 in the fall of 2021.

Inspired by the Class of 1999, which raised money to establish a fully endowed scholarship fund, Gladstone was looking for a way to help students in need and increase class participation. “I saw how a scholarship humanized the donation and, after speaking with classmates, the idea came to life,” he said.

Ever grateful for the foundation Walsh Jesuit provided them, Sarah and Dan, who are now married with their own daughter in the Class of 2024, have always given back to their alma mater. “Sarah and I really liked the idea of joining our classmates and having something to rally around for a specific cause,” Dan shared.

“Having the opportunity to meet the students makes it tangible and rewarding and we have really enjoyed helping a student who would not be able to attend Walsh Jesuit if it were not for the scholarship,” he continued. “We saw the need and believe in the value of a Walsh Jesuit education.”

As one of the early females to graduate from Walsh Jesuit, Sarah felt a lasting impact her Jesuit education provided, and giving back to the school that gave her so much was natural. “I was drawn into the faithfulness of the Walsh Jesuit community and I found the teachers very caring,” Sarah reflected. “My moral compass was shaped by the education I received at Walsh Jesuit, and I feel confident that our daughter, Marie, will find her own path through her high school journey as well.”

“The fact that we are doing something together as a class is powerful,” noted Guba. “Being in the second fully co-ed class for four years made ours special especially for the women who had a unique bond as they were groundbreakers and pioneers, and this scholarship is a way of connecting the future with the past.” he reflected.

The Walsh Jesuit High School Foundation oversees the Walsh Jesuit High School Endowment.

Its mission is to provide funding for the school in perpetuity. Each year 5% of the Foundation’s assets are distributed to Walsh Jesuit High School on an annual basis.

Classmates, family members, and friends of Walsh Jesuit can make donations in any amount in memory of departed loved ones or in honor of living individuals. Unless otherwise designated to apply to a specific named endowment, these memorial and honor gifts are added to the general Walsh Jesuit High School Foundation. Gifts in the amount of $100,000 or more can establish a fully endowed scholarship.

Gerry Rardin `72, Bob Golias `82, Pat Flaherty `83, Pat O’Neil `99, Katie Dull `07 and Grant Conzaman inducted into the WJ Athletic Hall of Fame.

David ’96 and Jillian ‘97 (Joseph) Pelland become the first married alumni and first female alumna with a child attending WJ.

WJ welcomed 269 students into the class of 2023, among them were 28 children of alumni.

FALL 2019>> Due to COVID-19 and Governor Mike DeWine’s orders to close schools, Walsh Jesuit moves to online instruction.

Adam Salek `20, Chase Henderson `21 and Dy’Vaire VanDyke `23 qualified for State Wrestling Tournament. Due to COVID-19 the tournament was canceled.

Nearly $180,000 raised on #GiveMaroonandGoldDay. WJ donors came together to meet and beat the challenge to fulfill matching gifts with over 400 Warrior Fund donors.
