Warriors LEADING at UA
R.J. Nemer '86 President
University of Akron
John Wiencek '79
Executive Vice President University of Akron
Ohio is blessed to have a great deal of incredible institutions of higher education, many in the backyard of our Wyoga Lake campus. One of those is the University of Akron, known as the world's top university in Polymer Science and Plastics Engineering, and UA's College of Business is one of the top 1% of schools worldwide for degrees in Business and Accounting. The beautiful campus located right in the heart of Akron is less than 10 miles from WJ, and it is led by two Warriors!
This past summer, 1986 WJ graduate, R.J. Nemer was named the school's nineteenth President, and his Executive Vice President and Provost is John Wiencek '79, who hired R.J. as Dean of the Business School a few years ago. During the interview process, they discovered that they both attended Walsh Jesuit High School. Since that time, the two have grown into good friends and confidants.
“When someone proactively reaches into your life to help you, you know that you are truly doing God's work and helping you to do likewise,” John said of R.J.
“We learned very early on that our different leadership strengths are quite complementary,” R.J. said, describing his admiration of John. “He has helped me acclimate into education as a career and navigate shared governance, which is an important aspect of leadership and the overall workings at UA and other institutions of this type.”
Together these two make a dynamic duo, guiding and leading current and future generations of students at the University of Akron and beyond. However, the career paths R.J. and John took to get to this point of their careers are vastly different. After graduating from the University of Akron–School of Law, R.J. spent a few years practicing law until his 30th birthday when he decided to quit his job as an attorney to start Icon Sports Management. “Many people in my life questioned that decision, but it worked out really well for me,” R.J. said. “I ended up owning the world's largest independently owned golf agency, which I later sold and continued to run for the parent company.” Through it all, he stayed in northeastern Ohio and applied to become the Dean of the College of Business.
John earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati while co-oping at Proctor and Gamble. Learning from those engineers and holding a job as a tutor inspired him to go for the PhD and become a professor. John progressed his way up the professor and administrative ranks to the highest level in the academic area when he served as Provost, a role he held on an interim basis at Virginia Commonwealth University, then at the University of Idaho in a permanent role, until the job at Akron. It was a perfect time for him to return home with his family.
“I
am in it for the people, the students mainly but also the faculty and staff who invest their lives well above the level of compensation they receive,”
John said. “They too want to make a difference that lives beyond them.”
Although each has reached this point in their careers through different routes, R.J. and John have developed a terrific partnership while leading UA. “He brings a wealth of experiences working in higher education, whereas I had previously led enterprises outside academia,” R.J. says of John. "Since John has been in the Executive Vice President and Provost role for the past few years at The University of Akron, his institutional knowledge and past experiences have been invaluable to me as I've transitioned into the president's role.”
John is also complimentary of his boss and feels that UA is very lucky to have President Nemer leading the way. “There are seasons to a university, like choosing the right clothes for the right season, you need to choose the right president at this time for Akron. RJ is rooted in this community, and he is innovative, is positive, and finally, is persistent. He is the right president for Akron during this season of the University of Akron's history.”
Higher education, much like secondary education, is constantly evolving and changing. Both R.J. and John must be forward-thinking as UA continues to grow, stay a world class institution and be an excellent option for future students.
“We have such amazing potential as a university, and we have dynamic individuals working at The University of Akron who will help us achieve that growth with diverse, bright, and engaged students,” said R.J.
“The key for most institutions, The University of Akron included, is growth and maximizing the perception and value of a college education with upcoming generations of potential students.”
Although R.J. didn’t have higher education or university leadership in mind earlier in his career, he really took to the president’s role in a very short period of time. You will always find him around campus, at events, engaging with his staff, talking and taking selfies with the students, and enjoying the UA community. He’s a great follow-on Instagram because the community has truly embraced their new leader. “I consider myself very lucky that so many have been willing to tell me their story and share with me their passions. In most cases, there is so much passion
for UA and so much honor and respect for UA’s role in creating narratives and success stories all over the world.”
Both have also stayed engaged and involved with their alma mater Walsh Jesuit High School. R.J., a 2022 Distinguished Alumni recipient, recently spoke to Mr. Battista’s ‘86 Business Leadership class, and, of course, he took a selfie with our students. John recently volunteered to serve WJ by joining the Board of Trustees to help guide our leadership now and into the future. “I am thrilled to be serving on the Board and getting to know WJ all over again,” said John. “I am thoroughly enjoying reconnecting with my roots, especially the Ignatian way of doing things.”
R.J. added “I love to come back and talk about my shared history with other alumni. I love to see updates and learn what’s new. What I love to do most, however, is meet the new generations of WJ Warriors and learn about their experiences and their passions. WJ truly set the path for my
future success, and I’m a grateful alumnus, proud parent of WJ alumni, and current advocate for all WJ has to offer. Many of my close friends today are the classmates I met during my time at WJ. My experience there remains part of who I was and who I am.”
Looking into the future, both WJ alums are excited about the partnership WJ and UA have built, and as R.J. says, “There is nothing better than being a forever Warrior and a forever Zip.” They have some sound advice for all students as they continue their education journey beyond the halls of Walsh Jesuit. “No one institution is going to be the best fit for every student,” said R.J. “When I meet Walsh Warriors, or students from any high school, I tell them to make the college choice that works best for their individual needs. I want all potential students to keep us as part of the conversation, come see what UA has to offer, and gauge if we are the right fit.”
Editor’s Note: In late January, John Wiencek ’79 announced he will be stepping down from his role as Provost and returning to the faculty.
How do you engineer an exceptional Jesuit School?
As Walsh Jesuit reaches the midway point of our 60th year, Warrior Paths considers the remarkable legacy of excellence lived through generations of mission-driven men and women for others who have each contributed to the design of this marvelous community.
Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of forming men and women for others, the core design principle of our mission compels us to not only cultivate academic excellence but a profound sense of social responsibility and ethical leadership in each of our students. Our Ignatian educational pedagogy, exemplified by the ‘graduate at graduation’ framework, ensures that each Walsh Jesuit student graduates with a strong mind and a heart to change the world. This holistic approach is the hallmark of a Jesuit education that results in mission-driven leaders like R.J. Nemer ’86 and John Wiencek ’79 who are making a transformational impact on higher learning here in Northeastern Ohio.
Of course, great designs cannot simply exist on paper –they must be brought to life by skilled professionals. At Walsh Jesuit, we are blessed with nearly 70 world-class faculty-members like Mr. Dave Burnside who challenge our students to use critical thinking skills and an entrepreneurial mindset to learn and solve problems. From classrooms like Mr. Burnside’s to Kairos retreat experiences to service and immersion trips, WJ teachers, campus ministers and coaches bring passion, expertise, and a deep commitment to the Jesuit ideals of education.
Extraordinary achievements by Walsh Jesuit alumni in the field of engineering are a powerful testament to the enduring value of a Jesuit education. From roads and bridges to groundbreaking technologies, Warrior Paths places a proud spotlight on several alumni who exemplify the Jesuit ideal of excellence.

The Importance of STEM in Jesuit Education
In today’s rapidly evolving world, the importance of incorporating principles of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education into the framework of a Jesuit high school cannot be overstated. At Walsh Jesuit, the incorporation of STEM principles is not simply about designing complex machines or mastering formulas, it’s about forming individuals to be critical thinkers, innovative problem solvers, and altruistic leaders. Integrating STEM principles ensures that students are not only equipped with practical expertise and technical skills, but with an ability to reflect on the broader implications of their work, a consideration of how that work animates the Gospel message, and a commitment to living as “men and women for and with others” in service to God.
STEM education at Walsh Jesuit has blossomed in recent years due to collaboration with other Jesuit high schools, the efforts of a dynamic educator on our faculty, and a commitment to infuse all aspects of the curriculum with STEM principles. Aside from pre-existing courses and extracurricular activities that indirectly targeted STEM goals, explicit movement toward STEM principles resulted from conversations with colleagues at Brophy College Preparatory (Phoenix, AZ) and Creighton Preparatory School (Omaha NE), two Jesuit high schools that had recently moved in a similar curricular direction, highlighting the importance of curiosity, experimentation, and handson learning. This approach to “learn by doing” reflects the Jesuit concept of experiential learning as a pathway to deeper understanding and action. Dave Burnside, a veteran Physics and Computer Science teacher, volunteered to help craft the curriculum for an introductory, required Freshman-level course to introduce students to basic concepts of programming, circuitry, and 3-D fabrication utilizing an individual and team project format. Dave also used federal funding to design and equip our Center for Design & Innovation and helped create
upper-level elective coursework in our Business & Innovation Department to promote continued growth of our students in this area. Lastly, Walsh Jesuit focused its state accreditation self-improvement goals on increasing creativity and innovation across all content areas through project-driven learning to form our students’ as resilient, collaborative, and responsible learners.
STEM principles not only serve to guide our students’ learning in the present, but they have practical applications that reflect our mission and help shape students and our world for the future. By transforming classrooms into spaces where students are empowered to tackle real-world dilemmas, learning becomes less of a theoretical exercise and more an inspiration on how students can solve problems that impact communities at large. In nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit where learners receive confidence to take risks and resilience to learn from failure, classrooms offer a supportive environment to foster a mindset of lifelong curiosity and growth. By opening doors to fields that have historically lacked diversity, including gender diversity, schools help emphasize environments that are inclusive, that challenge stereotypes, and that encourage all students to excel in working for a more equitable society.
STEM principles serve as a natural fit and necessary complement to the holistic formation that defines Jesuit education. Moving forward, the blending of these approaches will help us better prepare students to become individuals of competence, conscience, and compassion as agents of change needed in our world today.

Warriors in ENGINEERING
CIVIL ENGINEERING Lou Ciraldo'71
A recently retired President and founder of Summit Construction, Lou Ciraldo '71 earned his BS in Civil Engineering from The University of Akron, and he credits his college and military education to his success in design and construction. Concurrently with earning his degree from Akron, Lou participated in the Army ROTC and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. branch Army Corp of Engineers.
“I spent five years in the Army with three years overseas in the European operation area with training as combat engineer with construction for fighter air base runway, training arms ranges, and helicopter
landing/fueling pads while participating as a combat engineer supporting NATO security mission,” explaining his military experience. “I had many valuable experiences and learning opportunities through military service, specifically listening to the soldier or technician closest to the action gives important perspective to the leader.”
Lou knew he wanted to be an engineer as early as eight years old. His mom and dad nurtured their three sons toward careers in engineering, medicine and architecture. Lou worked as a baker and carpenter during high school and his first year at Akron, learning that a career in the trades is hard, but also very rewarding. He feels like he was paid to have fun.
“The best part of an engineering and construction career is the opportunity to design and take the dream into reality,
building a new facility for others to use and seeing the end users smiles and happy feelings when it is completed and met expectations.”
His career began in 1980 in North Carolina, but just over a decade later, Lou returned home to Akron with his wife of 45 years, Connie, and his four children, Louis '98, Mike, Chris '08 and Theresa '11. Not long after arriving back in Northeast Ohio, Lou and two partners founded Summit Construction in 1993. The next three decades brought about many memorable projects that the WJ community is very fond of; Canal Park baseball stadium, the WJ Theater, administration addition, classroom additions, Barger wrestling room and the all-sports complex. He continues to be an adjunct professor at the University of Akron and STEM education teacher at the 7-8 grade levels in his retirement.
Jason Rohrer '96
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
Software engineering involves the process of designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications. For 1996 alum Jason Rohrer, he uses those skills in his career as a self-employed artistic game designer.
Jason studied computer science at Cornell, but a career in the software industry didn't seem appealing to him. So, Jason entered a Ph.D. program at UC Santa Cruz with plans to become a university professor instead. “After publishing a journal paper (that no one read),” Jason kidded, “I began thinking about writing a 250-page thesis that no one would actually read, and the whole enterprise started to feel like a waste to me. So, I ended up working on my own but making things that people actually want to use and are willing to pay for.” Hence, a career in entertaining millions began.
'The idea that groups of people actually designed them never really crossed my mind.' As a kid, Jason played video games. We all remember them, the plastic cartridges that would fit into a gaming system. After grad school though, Jason became aware of the independent game movement, individuals working alone or
in small teams essentially creating games from their homes.
“And then I thought, 'Hey, I can program! Perhaps I can make a game.' And I made one.
And then I made another, and another. And there was a
burgeoning scene of indie game connoisseurs who eagerly embraced what I was making. I got traction, and my career took off from there.”
Making something that many people think is so interesting and fun seems like a terrific career, and it is, but it does present its challenges. As a solo creator, the success and failure of a project rests solely on Jason's shoulders without a safety net. However, it is the realization that a certain kind of perfection that is obtainable that makes his career so exhilarating. It has paved the way for one of the most exciting projects of Jason's career, Project Skydrop.
“Project Skydrop is my attempt, as a designer, to make a novel contribution to the 'treasure hunt' genre. Some famous treasure
hunts have lasted 50 or more years because it's really hard to measure the difficulty of a fixed riddle or puzzle. If the puzzle is too easy, the treasure is found right away, and the hunt is ruined. If the puzzle is too hard, the treasure hunt drags on for years, and people lose interest. Can I make a treasure hunt with a fixed timeline? Project Skydrop features a circle on a map that starts out huge, at 500 miles in diameter, and shrinks, day-by-day until it eventually pinpoints the treasure at the end of three weeks. So, on the first day, we have a 500-mile circle, and a photograph looking down at the treasure from 4 feet off the ground. On the next day, you might see that there's a log near the treasure, then you might see some of the trees that are around the treasure. At some point, in the middle of the hunt, the circle gets small enough, and the daily photo shows enough information, that the treasure becomes findable.”
Jason has fond memories of his time at WJ, including the Jesuit education he received and how it relates to his career as a software engineer. “I'm both an engineer and an artist, and I'm pretty focused on the spiritual aspects of life,” he said. “The most valuable take-aways probably came from the art and humanities sides of things, like from Mrs. Weber's art classes, or the creative writing I did in English class with Mr. Cardone and Mrs. Barger, or the esoteric philosophy that I discussed after class with Mr. Theiss. There's an artistic and philosophical component to game design, and it definitely shines through in my work.”
Katie (Payne) Wheaton '97
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Katie Wheaton '97 has turned her professional experience into developing the next generation of Civil Engineers. Katie, who specialized in Structural Engineering, is now a Senior Instructor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University. In addition to teaching two required classes for civil engineering students, she also advises a large group of first year students on their academic options at CWRU.
“When I first started teaching, I could draw on my work experience and the students really connected with hearing those stories,” said Katie. “Now that I have solely taught for 15 years, I grieve a little that I left behind my structural design career. I no longer have current design examples to talk about in lecture. But thankfully I am plugged into a professional development network, which allows me to stay current on technical content.”
It can be challenging in preparing her students for the incredibly complex world they will be entering as a civil engineer.
“It is a delicate balance to stay both uplifting and realistic,” Katie said. “I must make my students fully aware of the huge challenges facing our built environment, while also fostering the spark of creativity and excitement that brought them to engineering in the first place.”
Initially, Katie worked as a structural engineer in Washington D.C. and Cleveland, and her design work focused on new buildings for commercial or academic institutions. When Katie and her husband began to have a family, she turned to her alma mater and her
undergraduate engineering professor at CWRU, Dr. Art Huckelbridge. “The idea of teaching was not even on my radar, but Dr. Huckelbridge was confident that I could do the job, and thankfully his certainty boosted my courage.”
Katie was drawn to structural engineering because of the architectural beauty of buildings, learning the “puzzle” of how they remain standing. She entered college with some doubt, but the generosity of an aunt and uncle, both architects, in Boston changed that. “My aunt hired me as an intern at her company that specializes in historic renovation architecture. I learned CAD for drafting blueprints and had my first experience observing the project management of a building under construction. They provided the experience that would shape my future professional life. Because after that summer, I could envision myself working as a structural engineer.”
Mrs. Carol Barger, Mrs. Jane Rafferty, Mr. Storad and many other amazing teachers all had a huge impact on her life. They allowed students to explore a lot of different interests, and the opportunity to practice skills in teamwork, collaboration, and problem solving. All critical skills to be a successful engineer. Fast-forward to her alma mater now, and Katie is excited that WJ has expanded its STEM program. “To have hands-on experience tinkering in the physical world is priceless. It puts students in a place where the engineering design process happens naturally,” Katie said. “It is so cool that I have had two WJ alumni as civil engineering students at CWRU! These students had the adaptability, teamwork skills, and growth mindset that exemplify the best engineers.”
Friday night football games, dances, allschool masses, and the Kairos retreat all stand out as cherished memories of her time as a Walsh Jesuit student. Her time as a Warrior set the foundation for the rest of her life.
“When I reflect on my journey from WJ to now, the gratitude and awe can feel overwhelming. We all have stories of mentors or special people who helped us along our way. It is a privilege if we can pay that forward. And I am grateful every day that my vocation as an engineering professor gives me opportunities to do so.
Brittany Geyer '11
PROGRAM ENGINEERING
“With the large role technology plays in our lives, I think it's important for everyone to have a basic STEM understanding. Even if someone decides STEM isn't for them, the complex problem-solving skills you learn through STEM can help you in any career. I think it's fantastic that WJ has a STEM program! The addition of the STEM program will allow many students to gain exposure to new ideas and broaden their horizons.”
Brittany Geyer '11 doesn't hide her excitement that her alma mater has made such a strong commitment toward our students learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Program Engineering Manager at BAE systems was amazed that how some of her college classmates already had exposure to these principles.
“I think it's important to get exposure to anything related to STEM as early as you can,” Brittany said.
“Classes that introduce you to programming that give you hands on experience, are a great way to start building skills and getting exposure prior to college and a career. Many of
my peers in college had done things like this in high school, and it helped them select their major much faster.”
As a Programming Engineer Manager, Brittany is responsible for all engineering work on a program, including the execution of different disciples of engineering. It is a role that provides her exactly what she was looking for in her career; an opportunity to get a bigger picture view of systems and interact with end users. “I started my career as an HVAC engineer after graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. After a year, I pivoted to the Defense Industry and started as a mechanical engineer at BAE Systems. After a few years I transitioned into a Hardware Lead role, where I oversaw not only the mechanical design, but also the electrical and firmware design teams.”
There is a real satisfaction that comes with Brittany's job, as on a large scale, they keep our men and women in the military safe, and in turn our country. She is thankful that a guidance counselor at WJ had suggested she look into engineering as a career because she really enjoyed her science classes. “Once I started doing some research, the versatility of a career in engineering really appealed to me,” she said. “With a degree in engineering, particularly mechanical, there were many industries I could pursue after college.”
Thomas Imhoff '15
MECHANICAL ENGINEER
Thomas Imhoff graduated from WJ in 2015 and earned his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 2019. Thomas was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in that same year, and he later earned a Masters in Engineering in 2020 and a Masters in Engineering Technology in 2021 from the University of Cambridge. He currently serves as an Engineering Duty Officer, helping to lead a team that is responsible for overseeing multiyear contracts with industry to repair and overhaul the Navy's Warships.
“I knew early on that I wanted to be an engineer,” Thomas said. “I was always interested in understanding how things work, and I really enjoyed math and science classes in high school, particularly when I was able to apply those skills to problem solving.”
His high school alma mater played a big role in his career choice.
“I
had a great experience at Walsh Jesuit, and it absolutely laid the foundation for my career. I was lucky to have teachers who never got tired of answering the question, “why,” which fed my interest in understanding the world.”
Mechanical engineering can be a tough career, explaining complex technical problems and then finding ways to solve those problems. Now imagine having this type of career, while away from land!
“At sea, a ship exists in a harsh environment with little outside support,” Thomas explains. “Keeping the ships systems operational, managing personnel workloads, and planning ahead are very important to conquer challenges. At the highest level, success is returning a fully capable warship to the Navy after an extended repair period so that it is ready when needed.”
If you have ever been to the Naval Academy,
you'll immediately see the incredible teamwork employed by the midshipmen. It truly is a sight to behold, and for Thomas the best part of being an engineer in the Navy is working with highly skilled and extremely talented individuals from all backgrounds.
“Without these people, the job would never get done, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I have had to learn from such a deep pool of talent,” he says. “The first time that a ship has all of its systems working and is able to get back out to sea is a huge testament to the hard work of hundreds, if not thousands, of people.”
Thomas appreciates all Walsh Jesuit did for him, and he loves to visit campus to check in with faculty and staff, saying it feels like home. He is also grateful for the opportunities WJ gave him to get involved with STEM and is very happy to see his alma mater provide even more opportunities since his graduation in 2015. His WJ experience has certainly played a significant role in his career.
“I am a firm believer in servant leadership, and the Jesuit emphasis on “men and women for others” continues to resonate in my day-to-day life. My career so far has put me in the unique position to make decisions that impact the lives of the men and women who I am lucky enough to lead, but also the systems and infrastructure that they operate and maintain on a daily basis. It is vitally important for me that my decisions take into account the human aspect of engineering and keep those men and women at the forefront of my thoughts.”
MR. BURNSIDE has Warriors Thinking CRITICALLY
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is an approach to learning that integrates these four important areas of study, and that helps students develop skills like problem solving and creativity. Thanks to the school's strategic plan and in large part to Walsh Jesuit teacher Dave Burnside, WJ has placed a very strong emphasis on this type of learning.
The commitment grew, literally, over the summer of 2024 when the STEM lab doubled in size to 2,400 square feet. It houses state-of-the art equipment that includes:
▸ Laser cutters/engravers which the students use to cut out and engrave wood panels.
▸ Vinyl cutters for students to decorate their projects.
▸ 3-D printers for fabricating small parts that they need for their projects.
▸ A sewing machine, serger and 10-needle embroidery machine for textile work.
▸ Vinyl printer/cutter for creating color vinyl stickers.
▸ A sublimation printer.
▸ Various heat presses.
▸ CNC router.
▸ Variety of woodworking hand tools and scroll saws.
▸ 30 computers for the design work.
In addition, due to a large grant the school received, a resin 3-D printer and a low-cost UV printer will be added. “We have concentrated on trying to purchase only high-quality machines,” said Mr. Burnside. “While we don't have a full-blown woodshop or machine shop, the equipment we do have would be the same machines you would find if you visited the premier makerspace in the country, such as the Sears Think[box] at Case Western Reserve University.”
The growth of the lab, and ultimately the curriculum, was a strategic move by WJ staff, administration and Board of Directors to expand the STEM program. “The location for the lab was chosen very carefully,” explains Mr. Burnside. We wanted a location that would be expandable, accessible by students and highly visible for visitors. The current expansion is serving us very well.”
Mr. Burnside's “Design and Innovation 1” classes are critical in giving students exposure to technology and project building. The focus being on completing projects on an individual as well as in a collaborative setting. His “Design and Innovation 2” classes focus on one big idea for the entire semester. “Most students seem to enjoy the challenge,” said Mr. Burnside.
“It has been described as “hard fun” with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment on a completed fully functional project.”
Luckily for WJ, school leaders, along with Mr. Burnside had a vision of how important STEM education is in developing the next generation of engineers. He spearheaded the initiative that radically transformed how WJ educates our community.
Meeting the 21st century learning needs of our students. After 35 years in a traditional classroom, this challenge came along at just the right time and has rejuvenated Mr. Burnside.
“I
have more energy and more excitement as I see what my students are doing! After a day of running around helping students troubleshoot problems and trying to keep machines operating smoothly, I am exhausted, but happy. Each generation has their opportunity to move society forward through engineering. We hope that with the mission of a Jesuit education, combined with a passion received through STEM work here, we are not only producing engineers but engineers with the purpose of helping others and solving global issues.”
Sing Its Praise
Walsh Jesuit, alma mater, we raise our voice to thee; Thy cross and crown above us shine to guide us faithfully. With a warrior's heart and spirit, and Heaven's grace untold, May we be worthy of thy mission, fit to wear the maroon and gold.
– Music & Lyrics by Zachary Gustafson '96
If you have ever attended a school mass, spirit rally, football game or countless other Walsh Jesuit events, you are sure to be moved by the enthusiasm and excitement of our Warrior students singing the alma mater. Each rendition is sung with the students embracing one another, swaying in unison and concludes with a loud and proud “fit to wear the maroon and gold” while fists pump in the air. It has become one of WJ's most cherished traditions thanks to 1996 alum Zachary Gustafson.
“As a student, it never made sense to me that we didn't have an alma mater,” said Zachary. “But I was just a high school kid, so I chalked it up to 'well that's too bad' and forgot about it.” However, when Zachary left our walls to attend the University of Notre Dame, that all changed. He became deeply into music and was moved, like all Irish students and alums, by the ND alma mater, “Notre Dame, Our Mother.”
In 2010, the idea of creating something similar for his high school alma mater crept into his mind.
“On occasional visits home through the years, I had become acquainted with WJ choir director Rich Weber '71 and President Ertle,” explained Zachary. “I eventually worked up the courage to pitch them the idea, and they agreed enthusiastically.”
Zachary worked with an alma mater committee, which also included band and Orchestra Director Nelson Gorbach as well as Show Choir and Theater Director Dave Banks. The committee agreed on the basic intent, so Zachary went to work and takes us through his process.
“I landed on the rough outline of the melody pretty quickly. I discovered this wonderfully alliterative imagery with "cross and crown" as a nod to our chapel spire – my favorite phrase in the piece – and then the rest turned into just sort of putting a puzzle together. A reference to Warriors here, to maroon and gold there, and find some phrases that rhyme in between. The last tweak I made was adding the running notes at the beginning of 'of thy mission'.
After we agreed on the final form, I wrote the choral arrangement and had the honor of conducting the WJ choir in the premiere performance at mass in the chapel.”
The meaning behind the alma mater can mean different things to different people, but to Zachary...
“it's a simple message of reverence for the place that helped make us who we are, for our shared Ignatian mission of being for and with others, and for the battles we fight together along the way.”
The love and passion for the alma mater is something he takes great pride in. “That level of adoption and enthusiasm, I think, is undeniable proof that we got it right,” Zachary said. “The
alma mater isn't mine anymore; it belongs to the students. They have taken it and made it their own and given it its own life. And that is the greatest gift anyone can give to a composer.”
Thank you, Zachary, for the gift that keeps on giving in year 60 of our beloved Walsh Jesuit, and a tradition that will live on for decades to come.

Lord, Teach Me to Be GENEROUS
The words of St. Ignatius of Loyola, 'Lord, teach me to be generous,' serve as our theme this year. As such, they call us to reflect on our commitment to generosity in heart, spirit, and service. Rooted in the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to forming students who excel academically and are inspired to serve others, deepen their faith, and transform the world.
Generosity at Walsh Jesuit is not just about giving material resources; it is about offering our time, talents, and love in service to others. This value shapes everything here—from our academic programs to extracurricular activities and spiritual formation opportunities are all designed to form students who are committed to service and justice. At Walsh Jesuit, students are taught to seek knowledge not for personal gain but with an awareness of their responsibility to contribute to the greater good. Both inside and outside the classroom, students develop the critical thinking, compassion, and generosity needed to engage with a complex world while cultivating hearts that are selfless and committed to justice. At Walsh Jesuit, we believe that education of the whole
person prepares students to be leaders who act with integrity and a sense of justice. Yet it is important to recognize that “The Prayer for Generosity,” invites us to assume a posture of humility. It does not presume that we are already generous. It suggests that if we remain alone in our efforts, we cannot fight or toil or labor without seeking reward. This prayer is one that helps us recognize our need for the Lord. It invites us all
to say, “Lord, I can't do it alone. I need you.” And in its conclusion, Ignatius leaves us with a challenging call—to want nothing beyond knowing that we do God's will.
Once we embrace God's love and guidance, we recognize that our generosity is inseparable from our relationship with Him. We are called to be people of love, mercy, and justice. Generosity
at Walsh Jesuit is not just an internal virtue; it is best expressed through action.
We are fortunate to have faculty and staff who exemplify the values we hope to instill in our students. Each year, students engage in service projects alongside our adults, working with the marginalized and underserved through longstanding programs like Immersion and Labre, or new initiatives like Sophomore Service at the Peter Maurin Center. These opportunities not only enable students to make a tangible difference but also allow them to learn from the compassion and dedication demonstrated by our adult community. In doing so, our faculty and staff model the leadership, service, and integrity we aspire our students to embody.
As we celebrate 60 years of Jesuit education, we are grateful for the continued support of our alumni, donors, and friends, whose generosity sustains and grows our mission. Their contributions enable us to continue providing transformative education—one that emphasizes generosity, service, and a deep commitment to
others. We are inspired by the ongoing work of our alumni, who live out Jesuit values in their personal and professional lives. Their service, grounded in justice and compassion, reflects the education they received here. The generosity of spirit shown by Walsh Jesuit alumni, donors, and supporters continues to strengthen our school and ensure that we can fulfill our mission of forming individuals who not only succeed but also serve.
Looking ahead, we are excited for the next 60 years of Walsh Jesuit, confident that we are preparing the next generation to be generous in all they do—whether in their careers, communities, or personal lives. "Lord, teach me to be generous" remains our prayer as we look to the future, confident that the spirit of generosity will continue to guide us as we serve God and others in the years to come.

CREATE A LASTING IMPACT THROUGH PLANNED GIVING
At Walsh Jesuit, you have the power to shape the future. By planning your gift today, you can ensure generations of students experience the transformative power of a Jesuit education rooted in faith, service, and academic excellence.
Ways to Leave Your Legacy
Include Walsh Jesuit in Your Will or Estate Plans
By including Walsh Jesuit in your will, trust, or other estate plans, you can make a meaningful contribution that reflects your values and ensures a brighter future for generations of students. Whether it’s a percentage of your estate, a specific dollar amount, or a residual gift after other obligations are met, your legacy will support the mission of Walsh Jesuit.
A Gift of Insurance
A simple yet powerful way to make a lasting impact is to designate Walsh Jesuit as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy or retirement account. By updating your beneficiary designation, you can turn an existing asset into a gift that helps us continue to form "Men and Women for Others." This option is easy to implement and allows you to retain control of your policy or account during your lifetime.
Qualified Charitable Distribution from Your IRA
If you are 70 ½ or older, you can make a tax-advantaged gift directly from your IRA to Walsh Jesuit. Known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), this option allows you to contribute directly from your IRA without increasing your taxable income. It’s a meaningful way to meet your required minimum distribution while supporting the mission and values of Walsh Jesuit.
Every planned gift ensures the next generation of Warriors has access to life-changing opportunities. Together, we can continue forming "Men and Women for Others."

Walsh Jesuit, a Catholic, college preparatory high school in the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, reaches beyond academic excellence to develop competence, conscience, and compassion within its graduates. As a Christ-centered community we value inclusion and strive to be men and women for and with others.
Profile of Walsh Jesuit High School
Founded 1964 Type of School Jesuit, Catholic 2023-2024 Tuition & Fees $14,925
For Mark '80 and Carol Bachmann, Walsh Jesuit has been a second home for them and their four children, Joseph '10, Michael'12, Jeffrey '14, Katie '19 who have passed through these halls. Their long history with WJ is built upon the wonderful relationships they have within the school, and they want to stay involved and give back. In his senior year, Mark was the Class Vice President and named Outstanding Senior of 1980, and was the foundation for him to stay engaged with his alma mater for more than 4 decades.
“WJ had a real impact on the person I am today,” said Mark. “It reinforced many of the values that I learned at home, but there were several teachers who cemented those values. People like Fr. Jim King, Fr. Pat Hussey, Mr. Bill Ricco, Fr. Clem Metzger. They helped me understand that the world did not revolve around me, and that I had a responsibility to those around me.”
Mark, a partner at Marcus Thomas Associates, has still found time to Chair the 2010 POWWOW with Carol, and serve as Chairman of the Board from 2005-2007. Carol found time to be President of Mothers' Club in 2014, and Chair of Walsh Jesuit's Marketing Committee. Both Mark and
Paying It Forward: Mark & Carol Bachmann
Carol find time to lend their time and talents at the Jesuit Retreat Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland, supported the Xavier Scholars Program, and chaired the 50th anniversary of the school. Their dedication has resulted in increases in enrollment, updated facilities including the addition of the Atrium, new brand positioning, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, and so much more.
“I am most proud of forming a committee to support Boys Hope Girls Hope, and the thousands of hours parents generously gave to WJ to foster a warm and welcoming community between the parents, students, and the school,” Carol said, referring to her time at MC President. “I'm not sure if the WJ community is aware of the countless hours given by parents to make the WJ experience special.”
They are both very proud of the growth they have seen continue with the Warrior Gala.
“The mission of WJ is one of care, inclusion, gratitude, and service to others. The Gala is such a special opportunity to assemble 600+ likeminded people to celebrate the mission and invest in its future. It is a blast.”
Their commitment to our beloved institution led to the selection as Manresa Award recipients in 2022. It was a special moment for both. “We have attended the event for years and know many previous recipients,” they said. “It was so humbling to get that recognition. As we reflected on all that we have gotten from WJ and the special relationships we have with the people of the WJ community over the last 40+ years, we thought we should have given the school an award rather than vice versa.”
For the Bachmann's, giving back to Walsh Jesuit is very important. “We have continued to invest in the school in order to make it as affordable as possible. It is important for WJ to be an elite academic, spiritual, athletic, and social justice example, but it certainly should not just be available to those who are well off. It is all our responsibility to keep it that way.” Their philanthropy includes leaving something for future generations of Walsh Jesuit students as members of the Warrior Legacy Society.
“Making WJ part of our estate plan was an easy decision. In a noisy, divisive world, where we are being bombarded with confusing examples of how we are to treat one another, WJ plays a critical role! The world needs people of character, of inclusion, of peace. WJ teaches that. It helps the leaders of our future learn how to use their skills to make the world a better place. We can't think of a more important investment.”
What if I FLY?
One 2006 alum is providing hope for Walsh Jesuit students who may not have had the opportunity to realize their dreams otherwise. Isaiah Shepard '06 created the “What If I Fly Scholarship Program” to assist financially needy, academically competitive students who are identified ethnically/ racially as African American/Black, and who are residents of Akron.
“I was intellectually advanced but due to a low socioeconomic status, I attended a school and lived in a neighborhood where resources were scarce,” said Mr. Shepard.
“Therefore, I was not receiving an acceptable education or opportunities that would set me up for success. I was noticed by a WJHS administrator in 8th grade and given an opportunity to attend Walsh Jesuit, instead of attending my neighborhood high school. The exceptional education I received at Walsh Jesuit set the foundation that led to my successful collegiate career, logistical career, and business endeavors.”
That foundation led Mr. Shepard to a degree from Arkansas State University, and a successful career in the logistics industry and within Supply Chain for Amazon. com. “At the peak of my career, I managed a Transportation network for 63 locations in 7 states with 1400 employees. I've since transitioned away from my corporate career and a full-time entrepreneur in the Logistics and Technology space.”
To Mr. Shepard, giving back to the Akron community was critically important because of the lessons and values he learned growing up in that community. It paved the way for the WIIF Scholarship where students attending Walsh Jesuit must demonstrate exemplary academics, behavior, and service for renewal of the scholarship each academic year. Each student must also be active in at least one extracurricular activity and meet all expectations congruent with the Xavier Scholarship criteria. “I meet all recipients and their families typically with a formal dinner and welcome gathering. I stay in contact with the recipients and their parents. I get updated quarterly on their grades and almost weekly on their extracurricular progress and success.” All my scholarship recipients possess a hunger and passion to be successful in life. They dedicate themselves to being leaders daily and are actively developing the discipline it takes to have their dreams become their realities.”
Why do this for his alma mater? “Walsh Jesuit was not my initial choice for high school, but it was the best decision that was ever made for me,” says Mr. Shepard. “At WJ I experienced a higher level of academic excellence that helped make college a more seamless transition. I credit the WJ faculty for a lot of the communication and critical thinking skills that I have now. For as much as I enjoyed my time at Walsh Jesuit, I had no idea that it would continue to impact me today.”
Mr. Shepard was a good athlete while a Warrior, playing for the football team. He attributes his experience as a member of that team as a big part of his success. He also attributes his success to his alltime favorite teacher, and recent Manresa Award recipient, Doc Worthington, Mrs.
Jane Rafferty, and beloved, late Coach Greg Thurman. He now lives in Texas, but often you will still see him on the sidelines for Warriors football games. “I Love Football! Nothing gets me more excited than to be back in the state of Ohio on a Friday night cheering our boys to victory. I'm a living believer that the game of football teaches many leadership principles and builds character.”
He believes giving back to Walsh Jesuit is something that he, and others, are called to do and help ensure students receive an exemplary high school education and experience, as well as endless opportunities that lead to the recipient's current and future success. “While giving back can take place in many different forms, giving back to WJ allows you to not only give, but to give to an institution that is positively impacting the life of young people.” The passage from 2 Corinthians 7-8 guides his life of philanthropy.
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
The Walsh Jesuit High School Foundation oversees the Walsh Jesuit High School Endowment. Its mission is to provide funding for the school in perpetuity. Each year 5% of the Foundation’s assets are distributed to Walsh Jesuit High School annually.
Classmates, family members, and friends of Walsh Jesuit can donate any amount in memory of departed loved ones or in honor of living individuals. Unless otherwise designated to apply to a specifically named endowment, these memorial and honor gifts are added to the general Walsh Jesuit High School Foundation. Gifts of $100,000 or more can establish a fully endowed scholarship. Contributions of $25,000 can establish a named fund that is partially endowed.

Class of 1974: Pioneers of the Docendo Discimus Award
The Walsh Jesuit Class of 1974 has achieved a remarkable milestone by raising $74,000 in celebration of their 50th reunion! As only the sixth class in Walsh Jesuit’s history to celebrate this significant anniversary, the Class of 1974 has established an inspiring tradition for future reunion classes.
This new tradition, created by the Class of 1974, honors the legacy of the exceptional Jesuit educators who shaped the Walsh Jesuit community. At the heart of their initiative is the Docendo Discimus Award, a Latin phrase meaning, “The more you teach, the more you learn.” This phrase is a profound tribute to educators and reflects the Jesuit values of lifelong learning and service.

Gifts to the Docendo Discimus Fund directly support the Ignatian Fund, providing critical tuition assistance for students experiencing unexpected financial hardships, such as family illnesses, economic setbacks, or the tragic loss of a parent.
To commemorate their reunion and contributions, the Class of 1974 will honor the late Fr. Clem Metzger, S.J., who served as a dedicated educator at Walsh Jesuit from 1968 to 1978. Their generosity and vision ensure that the impact of Jesuit education will continue to transform lives for generations to come.
