ith a 24-year-old Harley-Davidson Fat Boy on the front cover of this month’s issue, it should be no surprise that we are looking back through the years at a number of topics. For starters, that 1999 FLSTF was customized by Shannon Reinhart of EDZ Motorcycle Repair in Decatur, Indiana for the cover of the upcoming Drag Specialties OldBook. Starting on page 20, you can read the full story with a build sheet showing what Shannon used to make it such a cool custom motorcycle.

quick learner. Just two years later, he was able to buy out the original owners and has since built up a business that was recently honored with an award by the city of Kissimmee for their many contributions to the community. Meanwhile out west in Southern California, Darryl Bassani has been building performance exhaust systems since the early-1970s. His story, which begins on page 30, tells how through the years, custom builders have been working with Darryl for a fitment to make their projects look and run great. In fact, Shannon Reinhart’s choice for the Fat Boy on the front cover was a Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 Short Exhaust. This issue includes our final Drag Specialties Magazine installment of our 30th anniversary stories that we have been running. We are approaching the conclusion of our celebration of completing 30 full years of magazine production for LeMans Corporation. Our story this month is about the birth of Bagger racing. The first I heard about Bagger racing was at the 2019 Drag Specialties Dealer Ride in Tucson. Rob Buydos told me about conversations he held previously with MotoAmerica’s Wayne Rainey about adding a class for Performance Baggers from Harley-Davidson and Indian. Rob’s idea was that Drag’s dealers and Performance V-twin product suppliers would organize teams to participate.

There are also stories in this issue about two companies that have now passed the half-century mark since they began. On page 58 you can read about Motorcycle Clinic of Kissimmee, Florida. They have been a Drag Specialties dealer since the store opened in 1973. The current owner, Brian Dady, started there as a mechanic and was a

After some necessary Covid-related adjustments, the first Bagger race was finally held at Laguna Seca in the fall of 2020. The web-TV type coverage produced amazingly high and unexpected viewership figures, which proved that the interest was real. Nobody has looked back since. Read all about it starting on pages 34 and 35 to see how Bagger racing is now one of the most popular forms of motorcycle competition. ■

eMans Corporation announced that Greg Matter is the new Drag Specialties National Sales Manager, effective immediately.

Matter has had a life-long passion for American VTwin motorcycles and has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, starting in Harley-Davidson franchises where

he held parts manager and general manager positions. Looking to expand his knowledge of the industry, Matter joined the Lemans Corporation in 2006 as a Drag Specialties Sales Representative in the Phoenix and Tucson markets. After 16 years in Arizona, he accepted the position of Dual Regional Sales Manager for the Parts Unlimited Central Region and returned to Wisconsin, which also allowed him to be closer to his family and grandsons. Along with being closer to family, Matter says the opportunity allowed him to work out of the company’s global headquarters, which has given him a better understanding of the business and insight into the company’s vision for the future. “I am grateful for the opportunity to again work with the Drag Specialties team and dealer network and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead,” Matter says. LeMans Corporation’s Vice President of Sales/Marketing Jeff Derge stated, “Greg and I both share a passion for the American V-Twin motorcycles and were fortunate to be part of some great dealers early-on in our careers. That dealership experience translates into understanding the market, the consumers, but most importantly understanding the needs of Drag Specialties Dealers and the great suppliers we do business with. Look forward to Greg’s leadership of the team into the future!” Drag Specialties Magazine congratulates Matter on his new role as National Sales Manager. ■

agger Racing League’s Fall Brawl in Daytona was an absolute barn burner. The thrilling race saw Arnie Wells of Team SLYFOX Performance and Suburban Harley-Davidson take the #1 plate with Bryan Shields and Craig Braymiller rounding out the podium. The American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) hosted the special AMA Championship class at the iconic Daytona International Speedway on October 20th and 21st. The Harley-Davidson dominated class fielded eleven racers who were ready to bring an intense Bagger brawl to the historic high banks of Daytona and it didn’t disappoint. Wells started out fast and secured the lead on Shields out of the gate. Yet Shields put on a show and battled back to make a pass going into turn one on the final lap. Wells, knowing it was now or never, put his head down and battled back to make the pass by Shields on the last lap, on the last bank to take the win!

“I’m so proud of Arnie and our entire team,” said Joe Houpt, team owner of Suburban Harley-Davidson.” “We are grateful to both the American Motorcycle Association and Bagger Racing League for offering an opportunity to race for a historic #1 plate at the iconic Daytona International Speedway.” Houpt added that he wanted to offer a special thanks to his sponsors, including Alex Fox at SLYFOX Performance, Alloy Art, BST, G2, Hayes, Midwestern Anodizing, Performance Machine, Regina Chain, and Shock’s Auto Body. The next stop for the Bagger Racing League is the championship race at Willow Springs International Raceway in Southern California on Nov 18th and 19th. ack in the saddle, Drag Specialties held another round of its 2023 Exclusive Dealer Training Tour in Knoxville, Tennessee. The event brought together 14 local dealerships in late September to get hands-on education from five popular Drag Specialties vendors. In addition to that exclusive product training, attending dealers enjoyed a night of food, refreshments, networking and checking out the lineup of custom Drag FatBook bikes. The Drag Specialties Exclusive Dealer Training Tour brings a rotating lineup of aftermarket manufacturers, product spe-

cialists, and vendors to each of the locations on the tour. This stop in Knoxville featured Cobra USA, Legend Suspensions, Michelin Tires, Rekluse, and Z1R. By bringing product specialists to central locations, dealerships are able to acquire employee sales training in one stop rather than taking valuable time from their work schedules for individual meetings. Additionally, manufacturers can reach a wide, focused audience, and provide a valuable sales training experience. The Tour helps dealerships broaden their sales networks and meet like-minded folks within their professions. Nothing equals meeting face-to face, sharing stories, and making solid business connections. The Drag Specialties big rig was hard to miss in the packed parking lot of Twin Peaks restaurant, a popular American sports bar just outside of downtown Knoxville. The location was the perfect backdrop for the evening’s events. A full dinner buffet of BBQ, sides and salads kicked off the night. Old friends and new met with back slaps and hearty laughs as they settled in for an evening of food, training and networking. With more than 40 attendees, ranging from seasoned experts to first-timers, every aspect of dealer sales training was addressed. Professional presentations, given on large screen TVs throughout the dining area, ensured that all attendees got in-depth training on how to sell the featured products. Technical specifications, product application tips, sales materials, and even display set-up were explained in a way to give dealerships the inside info on how to sell and up-sell their products. continued on page 16...

Whether it be performance upgrades, more comfortable controls, better tire traction, or new riding gear, the product experts from the presenting vendors were there to answer questions and give sales advice. As light faded, everyone moved outside to kick tires and examine the product displays and custom FatBook bikes set up in front of the Drag Specialties big rig. The presenting vendors also demonstrated their products’ highlights in more detail, easily fielding questions from crowd. Baumgardner, who also pulled this event together, marks how important the Training Tour is to sales through product knowledge, “As an employee for Harley-Davidson dealerships for 41 years I attended as many educational events as possible. Now as a Regional Sales Manager for Drag Specialties I cannot stress enough to our sales representatives, their dealers and employees how important learning about the product we sell is. Having key vendor personnel presenting and explaining their product is a win/win for everyone. Those attending the event now have a step up on their competition.” Vendors often go on rides and visit dealerships before or after the event so dealers actually get to test ride some of the products. Another big benefit to dealers attending the Tour, is scoring significant discounts on products. Dealers are offered great deals on any product ordered from the presenting vendors during the following week. Your Drag Specialties sales rep is your connection to all this great vendor knowledge. 2024/2025 OldBook Bike 1999 FAT BOY BOBBER

T

wo words, more than any other, can grab the attention of a dyed-in-the-wool HarleyDavidson fan. The words? Bolt on. Why? Because, in the V-Twin lexicon “bolt on” suggests two things – custom aftermarket parts and user-friendly installation. With that in mind the design crew at Drag Specialties elected to feature an old-school custom bike composed of bolt-on aftermarket parts for the upcoming 20242025 OldBook catalog. Naturally the bike’s bolt-on parts would be curated from Drag’s vast product inventory, items that can be found in the newest volume of the OldBook. In those pages you and your customers can find aftermarket products for Harleys ranging from Twin Cam (1998-2017) back to models that preceded the Knucklehead engine. After determining a styling theme, the design team headed off to Decatur, Indiana, home of EDZ Motorcycle Service & Repair. EDZ is essentially a one-man operation, owned and run by Shannon Reinhart. Turned out, too, that EDZ had a 1999 Softail Fat Boy ready for a makeover. It just so happened, too, that Reinhart had recently given the Fat Boy’s EVO engine a rebuild, using many of the aftermarket engine parts featured in the 2023 OldBook. Among those parts was an S&S Cycle intake manifold supporting a Super E carb with its S&S *Super Stock Stealth Air Cleaner.

offer a subtle, yet noticeably distinct, addition to the project. Additional attitude is found on the engine’s right side – the Drag Specialties Black Split Skull points cover. Reinhart also freshened the Fat Boy’s primary with BDL’s 3-inch Electric Start 8mm belt drive with lock-up clutch. He also summoned Drag Specialties for the 66-tooth rear pulley that’s fitted with Drag’s 131-tooth 1-inch rear drive belt. Joining that assembly was the Joker Machine’s roughneck Serrated Standard Shifter Peg and serrated Driver Floorboards, popular items among old-school custom bike builders today. In fact, Reinhart settled on a “less is more” theme, relying on simplistic styling to set the tone. “I was out to give the bike more of a classic Bobber look more than anything,” said Reinhart. “A muscular look, if you will.” Clearly, the bike’s front end checked that box. A set of Arlen Ness triple trees kicked the frontend out ever so

However, with the 2024 catalog cover photo awaiting the bike, Reinhart elected to give the 80-inch engine a little more window dressing. Off came the Evo’s original 12-point case bolts, replaced by pristine, all-new Feuling ARP 12-point fasteners. Reinhart also figured that a Bassani *Road Rage 2-into-1 Short Exhaust System would

In transforming this 1999 Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Boy, Shannon Reinhart took the “less is more” route. The finished product is a muscular Bobber that looks tight from front to rear thanks to a lineup of bolt-ons from the FatBook.

much for a lean look. The Fat Boy’s classic headlight nacelle made way for Drag Specialties fork sliders and 7-inch headlight kit. The Metzeler ME 888 Marathon 130/60-23 front tire mounted on RC Components’ 23 x 3.5 Nitro Front Wheel was wrapped with a Russ Wernimont Design LS-2 front fender, helping shed more of the Fat Boy’s original “factory-enhanced” appearance.

Suspension consists of Legend Suspension’s AXEO 41mm front suspension kit in the front forks, coupled with a pair of Progressive Suspension 422 rear shocks that feature remote adjustable preload. It’s a combination that Reinhart describes as “smooth riding.” Let’s get back to that attitude bit for a moment. The LA Choppers reach-for-the-sky 1-inch Nice Curves Ape Hanger handlebar certainly checks that box. Of course, everyone knows that regardless of a handlebar’s styling and dimensions, what’s just as important are the hand controls mounted to the bars themselves. Reinhart’s selection for that part of the styling exercise included some of Drag Specialties’ popular items. For instance, the THRASHIN Supply OG handlebar riser helps set the handlebar’s overall height, while the Alloy Art heavy-duty handlebar riser bushing kit affirms that it remains locked in place. Using LA Choppers’ clutch and brake line kits minimized parts chasing for the proper cable/line length, and the front brake’s 9/16 master cylinder was plucked right out of the Performance Machine parts manifest. Always a good choice. Arlen Ness Oval Micro Mirrors provide a view to the back when necessary, and the Drag Specialties Chrome Grenade Grips top off the hand controls.

The Bassani 2-into-2 *Road Rage Short Exhaust offers plenty of bark and bite, a great complement to the free-flowing S&S *carb and air cleaner setup. Shannon Reinhart of EDZ Motorcycle Service & Repair is a master craftsman when it comes to building custom V-Twins. Just combine his skills with the FatBook and OldBook and get ready for a show-stopper.

The Fat Boy rolls on RC Components Nitro wheels clad in Metzeler ME 88 Marathon tires. That’s a Russ Wernimont Designs LS-2 custom front fender hugging the tire.

Let’s talk electrics for a moment. Electrical current starts with the Drag Specialties AGM Maintenance-Free Battery, a solid, reliable choice. Reinhart went to the Badlands portion of the OldBook for the company’s Plug-In Style Run, Brake and Turn Signal module. The electronic ignition is based on a Dynatek 20001 PC Programmable kit, and lighting includes Drag Specialties’ Custom Bobber LED taillight and license plate mount. Alloy Art got the call for the front LED turn signals, and Custom Dynamics filled the Drag 7-inch headlight nacelle with its ProBEAM LED headlamp. As every Harley owner knows, when somebody checks out your bike, the main focus is on the engine and the gas tank. As noted earlier, the EVO engine maintains its

The Drag Specialties Seat solo saddle is a perfect match for that Bobber profile. Joker Machine’s serrated driver floorboards and foot pegs are minimal in appearance, but offer maximum grip and control.

stock appearance except for a few minor mods such as intake and exhaust. Now let’s focus on the gas tank. Maintaining the Bobber look led Reinhart to the Drag Specialties 3.5-gallon flat-side fuel tanks that are popular with the Bobber crowd. The Drag Specialties fuel tank custom bolt kit made it easy to shop for mounting hardware. The Joker Machine upper and lower dash panels were capped with Drag Specialties vented and non-vented Pop-Up Gas Caps. A compact Dakota Digital speedometer helps maintain a clean, clutter-free cockpit. A hinged Drag Specialties spring solo seat fills the gap nicely between the gas tank and Russ Wernimont bobbed rear fender, which conceals just enough of the rear Metzeler tire to maintain the proper bobber stance.

2024-2025 OLDBOOK COVER BIKE Even the most critical custom Harley enthusiast could stop here and agree that this bike has pedigree, but we won’t stop now because we still need to examine this Fat Boy’s new brakes! And front and rear replacements are from Performance Machine — 4-piston Differential Bore calipers packed with DP Brakes pads, and 11.5” rotors, occupy both ends. Before presenting the bike to Drag Specialties for the OldBook cover shoot, Reinhart elected to have Nathan

Bowers Paint Studios in Decatur apply the cool custom colors that put silver leaf PPG Brandywine over black. Note, too, that the BDL primary cover sports a handpainted Drag Specialties logo. With the Fat Boy finished and ready to ride, all that remains is to release the 2024-2025 OldBook with Reinhart’s bolt-on special as the star attraction. We can report that no metal grinder, hack saw blade or English wheel was consulted in the making of this custom Harley. ■

T

hanks to the increasing popularity of Indian Motorcycle models, the number of aftermarket parts available for them is continuing to grow. New parts for Indian models are hitting the shelves of Drag Specialties warehouses on a regular basis. Most recently, Drag Specialties has expanded its offering of Drag-branded sintered metal brake pads for Indian applications. In all, Drag has 12 new part numbers for its sintered metal brake pads, and all of those are for Indians. These newest additions join the already robust list of the brake pads Drag produces for Indians, and the lineup includes both sintered metal and organic aramid fiber pads.

Drag Specialties has 12 new part numbers for its Drag-branded sintered metal brake pads for Indian Motorcycle models. They provide great stopping power and a long lifespan.

After more than a century in business, there are plenty of vintage Indian models out there that need different parts than their modern-day counterparts. The Drag Specialties organic aramid fiber brake pads are an ideal choice for older bikes. More specifically, bikes from the mid-1970s and older – if a bike has celebrated its 50th birthday, then organic pads are probably the right choice. Since organic pads work great with both chromed and

Indian riders can also upgrade their brakes by adding a Galfer Wave brake rotor or a Hawg Halters13-inch cog drive rotor. The Galfer Wave front brake rotor comes in a solid-mount or floating configuration, and there’s a rear rotor available, too. Made from a 420 high-carbon stainless steel, these rotors are laser cut and double-disc parallel ground for absolute precision. Galfer’s Wave design is for more than looks, since it maintains a cooler rotor temperature even under extreme braking conditions.

Galfer’s Wave rotor comes in two models for a range of Indian fitments.

Sintered metal pads are known for their outstanding stopping characteristics as well as their longevity. That means these pads offer the best of both worlds, giving Indian riders consistent, predictable stopping power coupled with a long lifespan. Drag’s sintered pads are made in the USA, too.

billet steel rotors, these are also a smart choice for show bikes and custom builds.

Customers with Indian motorcycles should also check out Hawg Halters’ 13-inch cog drive rotors.

The Hawg Halters 13-inch cog drive rotors feature a stainless-steel rotor paired with an anodized aluminum carrier for lighter weight. The carrier is available in black or chrome, allowing riders to add a touch of style to their braking setup. Hawg Halters also has a 6-piston single disc bolt-on front brake caliper for Indian applications. The calipers are CNC machined for a precision finish, and the quick-change design allows for easy brake pad swaps. The chrome and black anodized finishes match the rotors. ■

Going Dark

Gloss Black Parts for a Uniform Look

T

here are a lot of small bits and pieces that go into building a motorcycle, and they should blend in seamlessly with the rest of the bike. Usually, items like brackets go unnoticed, unless they don’t match the other parts. Then, it seems like that’s the only part you can see, because it sticks out like a sore thumb. Gloss black hardware and accessories are a popular trend, and it’s natural that riders who go the gloss black route want everything to have the same uniform look. Drag Specialties has a number of new products in that finish to make it even easier to give a Harley-Davidson a gorgeous, cohesive look.

When it comes to a custom build, it’s all about the details. Going for that all-black look is easy with Drag Specialties growing range of gloss black parts like these seat springs for solo seats.

The new Quick-Detach Tour Box mounts from Drag Specialties come in high-gloss black, though chrome is also an option for those who prefer the brighter, shinier side of things. Fitting Touring Bikes from 2014-2022, these sturdy steel mounts allow for the quick removal of a Tour Box. They’re pre-drilled with the same mounting bolt pattern found on 2006 and later Tour Boxes, which means there isn’t any drilling required to get one up and running. All the hardware is included in the package, too. Drag Specialties also has a Tour-Pak luggage rack in gloss black. The ½-inch tubing provides a sturdy base, and it’s the perfect configuration for getting a bag loaded up and secured in place. The mounting hardware is included for even more convenience.

Drag Specialties offers a huge range of gloss black parts and accessories, including a Tour-Pak luggage rack and a Quick-Detach Tour Box mount.

The other new gloss black luggage accessory from Drag Specialties is a pair of saddlebag support brackets. These are high-quality replacements for the OEM version, and the three different fitments ensure that there’s a bracket option to fit virtually every Touring model, all the way back to 2009. Coil covers are a tiny accessory, but again, all it takes is for one small part to be out of sync, and the bike just won’t look right. Drag’s gloss black coil covers are stamped from steel, which gives them a smooth look as well as

durability. These covers fit OEM-style coils, and there are fitments available for both Dyna and Softail models. Rounding out Drag’s newest selection of gloss black accessories are seat springs for solo seats. Depending on the bike and the look a rider is going for, they can opt for a single 3-inch spring or a pair of 2-inch springs. These springs are especially great on rigids to offer some relief from the bumps in the road. ■

ell-functioning batteries are important, but it’s also imperative to make sure a battery’s power is being properly transferred to the starter motor. The best battery in the world can’t overcome a bad cable. Drag Specialties has plenty of OEM replacement battery cable kits for V-Twins, and some new applications have recently been added to the list. The latest battery cable kits from Drag Specialties offer fitments for two groups of Harley-Davidson FLHT/FLHR/ FLTR models – those from 2014-2016 and the 2017-22 range. These kits come with the battery cable as well as the auxiliary wires.

Drag Specialties latest battery cable kits fit Harley-Davidson FLHT/FLHR/FLTR models – those from 2014-2016 and from the 2017-22 range. The cables provide maximum current transfer from the battery to the bike, and they also have superior flexibility.

The 2014-16 fitments include a choice of a 12¾-inch cable or the shorter 10¼ inches. For the 2017-22 fitment, there are cable lengths of 11½ inches and 13 inches to choose from. All of the kits also come complete with ¼-inch and 5/16-inch terminals. Like all of the Drag Specialties battery cables, these latest additions are made from pure electrolytic-grade, 36-gauge tinned copper strands. That means the cables provide maximum current transfer from the battery to the bike, and they also have superior flexibility. These OEM-replacement cables are a great way to ensure a battery is being properly utilized and that the starter motor is performing at an optimal level. In addition to the standard kits, Drag Specialties also has custom battery cable kits. These are ideal for anyone working on a custom bike build who needs an exact fit. The kits come with a 25-inch length of cable that can be trimmed down to a precise size, and it is enough for multiple builds. There are also terminals in three different sizes, plus heat shrink in both black and red. If a customer is getting their battery cable replaced, it might be time for them to update their battery, as well. Drag Specialties has a range of battery options, including several that include AGM, like the Premium performance battery. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery technology provides more power than a standard battery, and it can deliver high currents on demand, which makes an AGM battery a great choice for both stock and customized bikes. A History of Performance More Than 50 Years of Exhausts

Bassani’s 2:1 stainless steel system with that classic Super Bike muffler.

T

he latest exhaust options from Bassani Xhaust are part of a long legacy dating back decades. In the early 1970s, 4-stroke engines were starting to dominate the racing scene, and Darryl Bassani began developing exhausts for them. He and his crew would head to Orange County Raceway in Southern California to test, tweak and test some more. This was the origin for what would eventually become the company’s Super Bike muffler. Today, Bassani has a new True Dual System for the Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST and a Shorter 2:1 system for the Milwaukee-Eight Low Rider. Both of these exhaust systems use that Super Bike muffler. The True Dual System is just that, offering Low Rider ST enthusiasts a dual exhaust system designed for maximum horsepower and torque. The Shorter 2:1 system takes more of a minimalist approach, with shorter head pipes that really change the look of a stock bike. In addition to the boost in power, these Bassani exhausts also give riders a great new look and that unmistakable Bassani sound. The stainless steel stepped head pipes feed into the 4-inch Super Bike muffler, which comes with a removable baffle. Like all Bassani exhausts, these are made in the USA at Bassani’s headquarters in Anaheim, California.

The 2023 CVO Street Glide and Road Glide models have been getting a lot of attention this year, and Bassani’s 2:1 and True Dual systems for M8 Baggers fit perfectly with them. The 2:1 mid-length system for M8 Baggers also uses the Super Bike muffler. CVO riders who want a double dose of sound can opt for the True Dual 2:1 system for M8 Baggers, which is available in chrome or black and is 49-state compliant. Like the other systems, both of these options feature stepped head pipes that graduate from 1¾ inches to 17/8 inches for better performance. Before Darryl Bassani was building Harley-Davidson exhausts, he was building 2-stroke exhausts. And, like so many other companies in the world of motorcycling, Bassani Xhaust got its start out of necessity. Darryl was racing motocross and TT while attending engineering school, and he tried several aftermarket exhausts on his race bike. He was disappointed with all of them, so he decided to make his own. Unfortunately, he didn’t like that one, either. After about 15 tries, Darryl finally had a pipe that gave his 2-stroke a power advantage. At the time, Darryl didn’t have his own shop. He would use the college’s machine shops at night, taking advantage of all the tools available to him.

Company namesake and founder Darryl Bassani’s long history of building performance exhausts dates back to his racing days. That same go-fast heritage is infused in every exhaust the company makes.

While Bassani’s history has involved just about every type of motorsports competition, the company’s exhausts for Harley-Davidsons have proven to be long-term favorites.

Things might not have gone much further if it weren’t for the DC-10 airplane, an unlikely reason for Bassani Xhaust to exist. After graduation, Darryl got a job in the engineering department of Douglas Aircraft. But, when the DC-10 didn’t pan out as anticipated, Darryl was one of the many employees laid off. Darryl was still involved in racing, though, and it was around this time that people started really taking notice of his homemade exhausts. When other racers would ask for one, Daryl would deliver it to the next race event. He was so confident in his products that he would let potential customers try out an exhaust before committing to buying. So, in 1969, Bassani Exhaust became a full-fledged company. Just a few years later, 4-stroke bikes were hitting the scene, snatching championship titles that had typically belonged to 2-strokes. Darryl could see which way things were going, so he focused on building performance exhausts to help 4-strokes get ahead even more. The first Bassani Xhaust-branded product to arrive on the scene for Harley-Davidsons was a slip-on muffler for Baggers that debuted in 1999. However, Bassani’s involvement with the company goes back much further. In the 1970s and 80s, Bassani was contracted to build exhausts for Harley’s XR-750 race bikes. Their name wasn’t on the exhausts, but they were pure Bassani engineering, performance and sound. It’s fitting that Bassani’s foray into V-Twin exhausts came through motorsports, since that’s where the company had its origins. Over the years, Bassani has been involved

BASSANI XHAUST

Bassani’s exhausts are not only designed to provide great power and a sweet sound, but to also look great once installed.

in just about every kind of two-wheel (and three-wheel) competition out there: drag racing, motocross, half mile, dirt track, ATV, TT, and road racing are all on the list. After the success of the slip-on muffler for Baggers, Bassani introduced the 2:1 Road Rage system for Baggers. That name and design have remained so popular that it is still available for the latest models. In addition to being a powerhouse in motorcycling, Bassani Xhaust has also been involved in the automotive industry. Companies like Ford SVT and Toyota Racing Development have all worked with Bassani over the years, relying on the brand’s ability to bring extra power to any project. Still, though, it’s the Harley exhausts that have proven to be the long-term favorites among Bassani Xhaust customers. The proof of their popularity can be seen in the Bassani facility, which is an enormous 50,000 square feet. Bassani has come a long way from working in a college machine shop. ■

30TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES

S P E C I A L

F E AT U R E

A

s we conclude the Drag Specialties portion of our year-long 30th anniversary series, we are looking back only a few years to when two words not previously used together, suddenly became the hottest new form of motorcycle sport: Bagger Racing. The first time I heard the name was in 2019 at Drag’s Road Runner dealer ride in Tucson, Arizona. Rob Buydos told me about an idea that he had discussed a few months earlier with the head of MotoAmerica, Wayne Rainey. A race capable of drawing a new segment of race fans to his races interested Wayne, and Rob loved hearing that MotoAmerica was open to giving riders with American-made Performance Baggers a place to compete. It would be the return of the “Indian and Harley Wars” of days gone by. Everyone at that Drag ride with products to sell for Performance Baggers heard Rob’s concept and many committed on the spot to field a team if it all came together. Fast-forward to January 5, 2020 and many of those interested parties from Tucson were at the Elk’s Lodge in Newport Beach to hear where things stood and when would the first race be? In addition to the teams and yours truly, representatives from MotoAmerica were there, as was LeMans’ founder Fred Fox. His nephew, Alex Fox had filled Fred in on what was going on and Fred wanted to be there to decide if Drag Specialties should get involved. At the conclusion of that meeting, without knowing exactly how much money was needed, Fred made the commitment that Drag Specialties would sponsor the first race and support it from there. The plan was for the first race to be at Laguna Seca in the summer of 2020 and be named the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers. No sooner than the event got approved did the Coronavirus bring a halt to racing of any kind, at least as far as allowing any spectators any time soon. It was decided to carry on with the inaugural race at Laguna Seca on October 23-25. The first race saw Tyler O’Hara take the win aboard an Indian Challenger, beating a Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson ridden by Hayden Gillim. While there was no cheering crowd, the race was carried on-line and pulled amazing viewership.

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

Nothing could have been timelier for the first cover of 2020 for Drag Specialties Magazine than to proclaim it the “Year of the Performance Bagger.” A HarleyDavidson FLHT customized by Curtis Hoffman provided the visual of the concept.

Bagger Racing was clearly here to stay, but after the first race was held, Rob Buydos and MotoAmerica each had a different vision of where to take the new sport. Rob wanted Baggers to be the premier race at events featuring only Harleys and Indians in a variety of model types. He formed the Bagger Racing League, which will have its 2023 season-ending race in Southern California in mid-November. MotoAmerica already had a roadracing series, and decided to continue with the King of the Baggers events running amongst the metric-only classes. Each year they have added the Baggers at more events and will include two races each, at eight rounds of the 2024 series. Stay tuned, this story will get bigger and bigger as time goes on. ■

LOOKING BACK THE BIRTH OF BAGGER RACING By Don Emde

As word spread about Bagger Racing at the 2020 Louisville NVP, show attendees slowed down to check out the idea of “race Baggers,” like this one in the SlyFox booth. Products for Winter Storage

W

ith most states moving into the winter months, a lot of riders are preparing to put away their bikes until the spring. Dealers know the importance of properly preparing a bike for winter storage, and LIQUI MOLY has the right products to get that job done. The oil system, fuel system and battery connections all get an extra bit of attention thanks to LIQUI MOLY. A fresh oil change is ideal before rolling a bike into winter storage, but before draining the old stuff, LIQUI MOLY recommends adding the Motorbike Engine Flush. This additive goes right into the old oil, and it collects harmful deposits and sludge so that it all gets flushed out when the oil is drained.

Motorbike Engine Flush

Another useful LIQUI MOLY product for the oil system is the Motorbike Oil Additive. Added into the fresh oil, the Motorbike Oil Additive reduces friction and wear in engines and gear boxes, thereby lowering oil and fuel consumption. When it comes to the oil itself, LIQUI MOLY has plenty of options. Dealers who want to take the guesswork out of choosing the right one can use the brand’s convenient online oil guide. Just put in the bike’s year, make and model, and the guide will list which LIQUI MOLY oils are best suited for it. Additional products, like transmission oil and brake fluid, are listed, too. Motorbike Oil Additive

Prepping the gas tank for winter storage is as easy as adding LIQUI MOLY’S Gasoline Stabilizer. This additive is specifically designed to preserve fuel during long-term storage. It protects against premature aging and oxidation, and it helps prevent condensation in the tank. By preventing corrosion in the fuel system, riders can be confident when they get ready for that first ride in the spring. Even if the battery is removed before sending a bike into storage, that doesn’t mean you can just forget about that aspect of the bike entirely. While a battery is sitting in a warm spot on a battery tender, those terminals are still there, and they deserve some attention, too. LIQUI MOLY makes battery terminal grease that can be applied to prevent corrosion and oxidation during the winter months. By adding it to the contacts, terminals and connections, the battery will provide optimal power when it’s re-installed in the spring.

Gasoline Stabilizer

For all those small connectors, fuses and other little electrical bits on a bike, LIQUI MOLY Electronic Spray can reduce wear, displace moisture, clean surfaces, protect against corrosion and minimize contact resistance. In other words, this one can of spray will keep electronics running smoothly, even if they’re sitting unused for a while. ■

You’re no doubt already familiar with THRASHIN’s popular Apex Floorboards for Touring models. They were new last year and are slightly smaller and a lot more stylish than stock. Machined from billet aluminum, the pyramid-plate platform provides solid footing that grips boot soles for maximum control. As the name suggests, the Apex boards are meant for cornering, and their tapered shape provides quite a bit more cornering clearance. If parts do touch down, it’s not the anodized or triple-nickel plated boards that scrape, but the replaceable Delrin sliders along the leading edge.

They’re a dead match for the original Apex’s in terms of style, with a similar half-coffin shape and pyramid-plate surface with the option for single clevis mount and touring rear passenger floorboard mount. That means they’ll work as passenger boards on Touring models to complement the standard Apexes, and it also means these new Apex Minis will work as the rider’s floorboards on Dynas, FXRs, Sportsters, and Softail models.

Time to Get Loud

Horn Upgrades that Get Attention ABS cover provides durability. A plug-and-play wiring harness is included, too. The three new electric horns from Custom Dynamics offer plug-and-play installation, as well, and together, they have universal fitment to give any model a big boost in sound. Each of the three horns comes complete with everything needed for installation, including a sturdy stainless steel mounting bracket with a black powder coat plus the wiring harness. The real excitement, though, is the horn itself, which is made by Italian horn specialists MARCO. The single low-tone horn produces 109dB at a frequency of 400 hertz. The high-tone horn also produces 109dB, but at 500 hertz. Put them together, and the sound produces 112dB at a 6.5-foot distance. To give you an idea of just how big of an upgrade this is, stock horns measure in at just 85dB.

Customers who are really looking to grab some attention out on the road should install Custom Dynamic’s 109dB electromagnetic dual horn kit.

V

isibility is a word used a lot in the motorcycling industry. We use it to discuss a rider’s range of vision, as well as how well other drivers and riders on the road can see a motorcycle. Sometimes, though, it’s not enough to be seen. Being heard can be just as important, and Custom Dynamics knows how to get loud. In addition to its popular ProBEAST Air Horn, Custom Dynamics now has three additional electric horns that send out a blast that can’t be ignored. The ProBEAST Air Horn has been around for a couple of years now, so chances are, you’ve already heard it in action. It’s a direct replacement for Harley-Davidson’s stock horn, but that’s about where the similarities end. The compact dual-tone air horn demands attention, producing 104.9dB at a 6.5foot distance. A heavy-duty metal bracket makes sure the ProBEAST stays put, and the chrome or gloss black

Riders who want the biggest, loudest sound possible – in other words, that 112dB – will want to spring for the universal-fit 109dB electromagnetic dual horn kit, which includes both the high-tone and low-tone horns. This horn is made to work with 12V DC systems to power that impressive sound. The 109dB electromagnetic horn kit for Softail models features the single, low-tone MARCO horn. Even with a single horn, the sound is still an impressive upgrade from stock, and it is guaranteed to turn heads. ■

PERFORMANCE PARTS

No Place for Plastic Upgraded Intake Manifolds

P

lastic may have revolutionized manufacturing, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good fit for every application. For example, take the intake manifold on Harley-Davidson’s Milwaukee-Eight engine. It’s molded from polymer, and it gets the job done, at least for a while. For increased reliability and performance, your customers should consider installing a 55mm Performance Manifold from S&S Cycle. While Harley forms the stock intake out of plastic, S&S takes 6061 aluminum that’s heat treated to T6 hardness

Plastic doesn’t like heat and doesn’t hold up well to vibration, and there’s a lot of both when that part is wedged between a set of cylinders! The harsh conditions in which the manifold exists can cause the stock intake to crack and warp, leading to air leaks and poor running. With the S&S Performance Manifold, your customers will know that they have strong and reliable plumbing connecting their throttle body to the cylinders. Honestly, what do you think is going to be more durable, threaded brass inserts pressed into plastic or threads cut right into hardened aluminum?

S&S Cycle’s 55mm Performance Manifold is a great upgrade for customers who want to swap out the stock plastic part on their Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight engine. Precision machined from heat-treated 6061 aluminum, it’s built for longevity and improved airflow.

and then CNC machined to its final dimensions. There’s no denying this is a superior assembly, providing more strength and durability as well as more performance. After all, this is an S&S part, and they wouldn’t make it if it didn’t make power. Thanks to improved airflow over the restrictive stock part, your customers can expect to see a 3 to 5 horsepower gain just from bolting on this easy to install intake. If your customers have already installed a big bore or other performance mods, then this manifold is a must since it increases airflow into the cylinders. Even if they haven’t gotten that far yet, the improvement in durability that this manifold offers is worth the investment.

Further improvements in reliability are made by way of careful machining. Particular attention was paid to component interfaces and mounting points, ensuring the flanges, fuel rail, injectors and MAP sensor are airtight and secure. The Performance Manifold even comes with a fresh O-ring to replace the stock part that seals the manifold to the throttle body. Installing this part is straightforward and easy for your techs to tackle in the shop or for your DIY customers to do at home. The 55mm Performance Manifold from S&S is suitable for Milwaukee-Eight engines from 2017 through 2021. ■

ith planning for 2024 well underway, Michelin wants to remind dealers that its Commander II and Commander III tire ranges will continue to be available, giving V-Twin riders excellent choices for their riding style and budget.

Michelin Commander III line. The Michelin Commander III Touring tires are designed to deliver, even when mounted on a fully loaded Bagger. Both versions of the Michelin Commander III tires are designed for long tread life and outstanding wet grip. That award-winning wet performance comes from a blend of exceptionally engineered tread design and a high amount of silica in the compound. The profile shape of the Michelin Commander III tires gives confidence at any lean angle, while the sidewalls are designed with Michelin’s Premium Touch Technology to look great on any V-Twin.

Michelin’s Commander III range of tires are a great choice for riders looking for long-lasting mileage and excellent, planted wet-grip. The tires come in Cruiser and Touring versions.

Since the Michelin Commander III tire range includes two versions – Cruiser and Touring – there are three different V-Twin replacement tire choices available. Michelin can accommodate virtually every V-Twin on the road with the Michelin Commander II and Michelin Commander III tires, including customs. The longstanding, legendary Michelin Commander II tire range set a high standard for longevity in a Cruiser tire when it first debuted, and that has not changed as we head into 2024. Michelin will continue to offer the Michelin Commander II tire in nine front and eight rear sizes.

Keeping up with Michelin’s products, sales tools and more is easy with Michelin’s Dealer Engagement Site (DES). HANDLEBAR CABLE KITS

A Kit for Every Fit

Making Handlebar Installation Easy

Not only are LA Choppers’ cable installation kits available in sizes for every type of handlebar, but they also come in three distinct finishes sure to match any custom look.

When installing a new set of LA Choppers handlebars or risers on your customer’s bike, reach for one of the company’s cable installation kits too. They contain all the necessary cables, brake lines and wiring for installation.

T

he story of LA Choppers and the company’s cable kits is a tale of innovation in the world of aftermarket handlebars. Once upon a time, LA Choppers shared a common belief with enthusiasts and mechanics alike that when it came to enhancing a Harley-Davidson with extended handlebars, there was a gap in the market. While customers could readily find extended length cables for Harley motorcycle models, installing those bars was no picnic for dealers or their customers. Looking to make that process simple and painless, LA Choppers developed its now popular cable installation kits. These remarkable kits are designed to provide everything needed for a seamless installation of taller handlebars on your customers’ Harley motorcycles. They not only include the necessary cables for the installation, but also brake lines and wiring. What’s even more appealing is that these kits come in 2-inch increments, ensuring a precise fit for a big range of handlebar sizes. Now, LA Choppers has upped the ante with its cable installation kits by offering three wiring options that cater

to a wide range of preferences. Your DIY customers can choose the standard “solder it yourself” wiring for the DIY enthusiasts. Those looking for a balance between convenience and customization can choose the “plug in one side and solder the other” option. Finally, there’s the incredibly easy “plug-and-play” wiring choice for a hasslefree experience. It’s safe to say there’s something in their lineup for everyone. LA Choppers also recognizes that handlebar height and the desired aesthetic can vary greatly among Harley riders. To address this, the company offers cable kits that accommodate handlebars ranging from a modest 8 inches to a towering 20 inches. Moreover, the company offers three distinct finishes to match the look your customers desire for their bikes – standard black vinyl for the OEM black appearance, braided stainless steel for a silver custom braided look, and midnight black for a smoked custom braided appearance. To make the process of choosing the right cable kit even easier, LA Choppers has introduced a tabletop cable kit display. This display showcases the three different finish options and the user-friendly plug-and-play wiring. Dealers interested in these displays simply have to order $500 in LA Choppers products. These displays are unobtrusive, taking up minimal space on a parts counter, and offer your customers the invaluable opportunity to see exactly what they will be ordering. ■

KING OF THE BAGGERS

MotoAmerica Expands King of the Baggers Championship The 2024 Season Grows to Eight Rounds

S

purred on by the skyrocketing popularity of the three-year-old championship, MotoAmerica has announced that its Mission King of the Baggers series will grow to eight rounds for the 2024 season.

What began as an invitational race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in July of 2020 and turned into a legitimate MotoAmerica Championship a year later, will now feature an eight-round, 16-race championship for the big V-Twin Baggers. The 2024 Mission King of the Baggers Championship will begin, as it did for the first time a year ago, with two races on the high banks of Daytona International Speedway, March 7-9. From Daytona it’s on to Georgia for round two at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, April 19-21, before the series lands at the home of Harley-Davidson - Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s Road America – for its traditional first weekend in June extravaganza. From Road America the series heads west to Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota for round four, June 14-16, just a two-hour drive from Indian Motorcycles’ parent company, Polaris. The series will then make its annual pilgrimage to Monterey, California, July 12-14, for round five at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the birthplace of the Mission King of the Baggers. Four years ago, Indian’s Tyler O’Hara won that very first invitational at Laguna in 2020 that started it all.

50

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

The AMA Championship will return to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, August 16-18, for the first time in 10 years and for the first time since MotoAmerica took over the running of the series. The event is highly anticipated and, of course, the series is bringing the Mission King of the Baggers series along for the ride. September will see things heating to a boiling point with two rounds to finish the championship and to crown a champion. The heat begins, September 13-15, at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, for the penultimate round. Two weeks later it all comes to an end at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey, September 27-29. The 2023 Mission King of the Baggers Championship was the most exciting in its young history with the title chase going down to the very last round at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The top three were separated by just 11 points and the top two by just two points. Those top two were Vance & Hines/Mission/Harley-Davidson teammates Hayden Gillim and James Rispoli with Harley-Davidson’s Kyle Wyman the rider on the outside looking in and 11 points behind. With a seven-point lead going into the final race of the year, Rispoli got the jump on the field but ran off-track quickly thereafter. That left Gillim in the catbird seat and all he had to do was follow Kyle Wyman home to claim the title. He did exactly that with his 11th podium finish of the year (including his three victories) putting him in the record books as the third different rider to take the Baggers title in its three-year history. ■

eep in the heart of Huntington Beach, California, nestled amidst the sun and surf, sat a little workshop focused on crafting two-wheel dreams. Over time, Todd’s Cycle grew into a legendary establishment known for its innovative and distinctive parts and accessories. This lineup included handlebars that earned a loyal following from bike builders across the country, and were seen on countless custom motorcycle builds. One of the most iconic creations to come out of that iconic shop are the legendary Strip Bars. These handlebars have a pointed top that gives them an aggressive, almost rebellious look. They epitomize cool and, once installed, provide a bike those extra styling points that really make a custom pop. Todd’s Cycle Strip Bars offer a nice touch of bolt-on individuality. As mentioned, Todd’s Cycle has created and released a big range of products that tick all the right boxes for custom builders. In addition to the Strip Bars, the company offers a full range of handlebar offerings in a variety of styles. The Beater Bars are a nod to tradition, narrow ape hangers that perfectly complement the style of Dynas, Softails and Sportsters. They add a touch of vintage nostalgia to these modern machines, and create a bridge between the old and new. For those who crave a more aggressive look and feel, the Moto Bars are a great choice. Inspired by dirtbike handlebars, they have a rugged and purposeful design. When paired with Todd’s Cycle risers, they transform any bike into a mean, road-ripping machine. The Moto Bars are for riders who are used to the in-control stance of dirtbikes, with minimal pullback and an upright feel. And then there are the Speed Bars, tailor-made for café racer enthusiasts. These handlebars provide a sporty, tucked-in riding position, reminiscent of vintage Hondas, Triumphs and Yamahas. With Speed bars, any old classic could be reborn into a café racer, zipping through city streets with agility and style. Aside from the wide range of handlebar styles that Todd’s Cycle offers, the company also focuses on quality, infusing high levels of meticulous craftsmanship into each and every bar. SUSPENSION PRODUCTS

Ride Tall

New Suspension for Improved Cornering

Progressive Suspension’s new Monotube Fork Kits are a drop-in part that adds 2 inches of ride height, dramatically increasing allowable lean angle and making room for larger front wheels.

T

he V-Twin scene keeps progressing, and Progressive Suspension keeps pace with the trends. With the Performance Bagger crowd shredding twisty roads and using their bikes in new and aggressive ways, riders are raising their Touring models to gain more cornering clearance. Progressive Suspension’s new Monotube Fork Kits are a drop-in part that adds 2 inches of ride height, dramatically increasing allowable lean angle and making room for larger front wheels. Progressive Suspension brought modern technology to Harley-Davidson front ends with its Monotube Fork Kits for the 41mm and 49mm forks found on 1997 and up Touring models. Previously available in stock and 1-inch and 2-inch lower ride heights, these complete kits are a popular choice for riders looking for improved stability, comfort and performance from their bikes’ front ends. That same great suspension performance is now available in a 2-inch longer arrangement. Compared to the alternative approach of installing longer fork tubes and internals, this Monotube Fork Kit is a clean solution that requires fewer parts, so less cost. Progressive’s elegant solution to a longer fork is an extension on the top of the cartridge that allows riders to move their fork tubes down in the triple clamp. This approach is simple and easy and preserves the ride quality that folks want and expect from the Monotube Kits.

For the larger 49mm tubes on 2014 and later bikes, Progressive uses its Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) damper in one leg and a progressive-rate spring in the other leg for refined and balanced front-end control.

Adding 2 inches of front ride height means more ground clearance for the aggressive maneuvers that today’s Performance Bagger riders enjoy. Or, if your customers are running a 23-inch front wheel, this fork kit provides the fender clearance and stance to perfect the look. The Monotube Fork Kit comes in two flavors to fit the different generations of Harley fork. For the 41mm tubes found on 1997-2013 Touring models, Progressive’s fork kit uses a monotube cartridge in each leg mated to progressive springs for complete stroke control. For the larger 49mm tubes on 2014 and later bikes, Progressive had enough room to implement its impressive Frequency Sensing Technology (FST) damper in one leg and a progressive-rate spring in the other leg for refined and balanced front-end control. Whichever setup is appropriate for your customer’s bike, the kit is a complete replacement for the stock fork internals. Progressive’s cartridges use deflective-disc technology to provide a finely tuned damping curve. Compared to stock forks, the Monotube Fork Kit offers better brake-dive resistance, improved bottoming control, better stability, and enhanced cornering performance. From the saddle, it all combines to feel like a more planted front end that’s more willing to follow the road and does a better job of turning harsh hits into gentler bumps. ■

Motorcycle Clinic: Kissimmee, Florida

Five Decades of Independent Excellence

M

ost businesses know it’s never really about the size of the enterprise, it’s how they’re run. Performance and honesty tend to be the driving forces that separate success from failure. Simply give customers what they want and need and (in nearly all cases) business will thrive.

As proof we’re about to visit an independent motorcycle shop called the Motorcycle Clinic in Kissimmee, Florida, that, for the past 50 years, has proven customer satisfaction to be the best policy for keeping its shop doors open.

Motorcycle Clinic hasn’t always conducted business from that building, though. When MC (as is the shorthand for the dealership name) was officially formed on June 1, 1973 by Finis Oakley and his wife Christi, business took place in a rented warehouse. Years later, after the Harley dealership vacated the premises on East Vine Street, the spacious 5,550 square foot building become home for Motorcycle Clinic.

For those who don’t know, Kissimmee is about 40 miles south of Orlando. Set your GPS specifically for 807 E. Vine Street, and you’ll find yourself parked at the doorstep of the Motorcycle Clinic’s spacious building, a clean and tidy structure that originally began life as an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership.

Today it’s a thriving independent motorcycle shop that specializes in top-quality parts, service and ready-toride pre-owned motorcycle sales. Motorcycle Clinic also happens to be one of Drag Specialties’ early dealers, a relationship that began shortly after the business got rolling in 1973.

Indeed, during its 50 years of doing business Motorcycle Clinic has thrived. And through the years the shop has received several community and customer-based awards acknowledging the shop’s outstanding performance and success that has helped fuel Florida’s thriving economy. For instance, Motorcycle Clinic was voted by readers of The Journal, a local newspaper, for the 2018 Reader’s Choice Award. The following year the Osceola News-Gazette, another regional newspaper, presented Motorcycle Clinic with its “Best of Osceola” award. In August the city of Kissimmee acknowledged Motorcycle Clinic with the community’s 2023 Ruby Award in recognition of achieving 50 years as a successful local community business. During a special ceremony the city stated, “This significant accomplishment was honored with the Ruby Award and a proclamation at last night’s City Commission meeting. We recognize them (Motorcycle Clinic) for the economic success story that they are, reflecting resilience and consistent excellence. Kissimmee Police Department’s fleet of Harley-Davidson patrol motorcycles. As noted above, the shop’s success story began after the Oakleys formed the business and began operations starting in 1973. During those early days a teenager named Brian Dady began hanging around the shop in his spare time. Dady, who started out on a Honda 100 before graduating to bigger bikes, had always been drawn to the mechanics of a motorcycle. As such, he was drawn to the shop’s service department. Over time, he began completing small mechanical jobs on customers’ bikes. During those formative years, Dady adopted the same good work ethics and habits that were practiced by the service techs that the Oakleys hired. In early 1975 there was an opening in the service shop for another mechanic. Because of his dedication to learning

about motorcycle repair and service, the Oakleys offered young Dady a job as a mechanic. Over time and under Mr. Oakley’s guidance, he improved his skills and soon found himself in what would turn out to be his one-and-only job. Dady’s self-schooling about motorcycles, coupled with his on-the-job training paid off, and through hard work and careful planning he soon was in a position to buy the Oakleys’ business. Finally, on May 31, 1975, he officially bought out the original owners. Motorcycle Clinic was now under the stewardship of Brian Dady. That first job had taken a rather interesting turn that brought with it a heavy load of responsibility. Under Dady’s guidance, the business only improved, and over the years extended a reach that was matched by the growth of its customer base. Having Drag Specialties as a major parts supplier helped, too. Within a few years Motorcycle Clinic had grown into a dedicated Drag Specialties dealer. As the shop grew, so did its service department, adding tools and machinery necessary for performing machine work such as boring cylinders and engine cases, valve seat grinding and porting cylinder heads. The shop eventually added a dynamometer and expanded into the performance realm for all Harley models, from vintage Big Twins to today’s Milwaukee-Eight powered bikes. In the course of all that growth and activity, Bryan Montoya joined the business and eventually became Motorcycle Clinic’s vice-president, while Dady remained its president. The shop’s growth continued, and the business solidified Motorcycle Clinic’s position in the performance

Harley market, offering Bagger builds and such, especially for Twin Cam and M8 models. Naturally, Motorcycle Clinic relies on Drag Specialties for many parts – with products from Bassani, Feuling, S&S Cycle, THRASHIN Supply Co. and Wiseco among the popular choices for high-performance engine builds. In fact, many of Dady’s early engine builds won their fair share of trophies at Horsepower Shootouts that were especially popular during the 1990s and early 2000s. His own Buell, in particular, took home a number of those trophies. Today that same expertise goes into the Bagger builds for which the shop has become known in the Central Florida region. Indeed, Montoya points out that the shop’s Bagger builds are especially known for their improved performance and reliability. “We offer manageable engine builds that improve performance through bigger power and smoother throttle delivery,” he says. Montoya notes that today’s Harley market is changing in many ways, and it’s a change that Motorcycle Clinic has recognized. “Women riders, especially women Harley riders, are more knowledgeable about their motorcycles now than ever before,” Montoya explains. “They know just what they want in their bikes, and we’ve built quite a few interesting engines for them.” And, you can bet those newer generations of customers – as well as the longtime loyal regulars – are getting that high level of service, honesty and performance for which Motorcycle Clinic is known. For Dady and Montoya, the shop’s ultimate goal is to make every bike service, repair or modification to be the best it can be. Doing so helps put a big smile on the face of any and every rider whose bike had been looked after by the good shop doctors at Motorcycle Clinic. And you can bet that those are big smiles, too. In this case, size does matter. ■

New Handlebars in a Range of Heights

H

andlebars are the centerpiece of your customers’ riding experience. Swapping out the stock bars is a great way to change the look and feel of a bike. New handlebars are the epitome of customization, and with Burly Brand’s new Folsom Handlebars, as well as their popular Gorilla Apes, your customers have two attractive styles and a bunch of different bar heights to choose from. Burly Brand’s new Folsom Handlebar is a new take on the classic T bar, providing a unique look with the precise steering control your customers want. These bars are built tough from 1¼ inch steel and taper to 1 inch at the control area. Girders between the risers and the 41/8 inch pullback bar provide strength and a sharp look that stands out from the crowd. For ease of installation and a streamlined finish, Burly equipped the Folsoms with dimpled and drilled entryways for internal wiring. These bars are also compatible with both cable throttle and throttle-by-wire setups, and are a great modification for Baggers and cruisers. Offered in a stealthy matte-black finish that looks good on any bike, Burly makes the new Folsom in 10-inch, 12-inch and 14-inch heights to fit your customers’ posture and style. The nearly straight bar provides plenty of leverage for quicker handling, and you can’t argue with the style. The new Folsom joins Burly’s existing lineup of Gorilla Apes, which are a go-to for guys and gals looking for that classic, shoulder-stretching stance. However, with heights as low as 10 inches, your customers can get a dose of ape style and a little more height than stock without going extreme. Choose from 10-inch or 12-inch Gorillas to open up the cockpit a little, or start getting into taller territory with the 14s and 16s.

Burly Brand’s new Folsom Handlebar is a new take on the classic T bar, providing a unique look with the precise steering control your customers want. They are available in three sizes.

These middle-height Apes are a great height for HarleyDavidson Road King, Road Glide and most Softails and Wide Glide Dynas. They’re tall enough to be considered a true ape hanger, but not too outrageous. For real kingof-the-jungle status, there are the 18-inch and 20-inch Gorilla Apes. All of Burly’s Gorilla Apes feature 1¼-steel tube that tapers to 1 inch to accept the stock controls, and there’s a 1-inch clamp area to fit stock triples. The bars are dimpled and drilled for internal wiring and offered in matte black or chrome, depending on the size. Both the Folsom and Gorilla Apes are made in the USA. ■

New Audio Solutions for Touring Bikes

T

here was a time when it wasn’t easy to find an aftermarket audio system for a Harley-Davidson. Now, thanks to brands like Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio, there are options for everything from a simple front speaker install to a full-bike overhaul. The new Hogtunes Retro Cut-In Speaker Lid Kit comes in three different configurations, and it fits 2014-2023 Touring models with the factory saddlebag lids. The simplest configuration is the Retro Cut-In Speaker Lid Kit without speakers. It comes with custom tooled speaker adaptors, silicone speaker gaskets, grilles with both chrome and blacked-out badges, all the required wiring, and a plug-and-play harness. To make installation of the speaker setup easier, the kit also comes with a template for cutting the saddlebag lids. The second configuration is the Retro Cut-In Speaker Lid Kit with speakers. This option takes the base kit and adds Hogtunes XL Series 6˝ x 9˝, 2-ohm, 200-Watt lid speakers. These speakers are designed for clear sound, excellent bass response, and the ability to handle higher power. The built-in water drainage system ensures everything dries quickly and thoroughly. And, finally, the Retro Cut-In Speaker Lid Kit with speakers and amplifiers is the complete audio solution for saddlebags, including two REV 225-RM amplifiers.

Wild Boar Audio’s 800-Watt Amp/Front Speaker and 6˝x 9˝ Lid Kit is built for plug-and-play installation, so your customers can be out on the road in no time.

The Retro Cut-In Speaker Lid Kit with speakers from Hogtunes is a great option for customers wanting to add an aftermarket audio system to their Harley-Davidson.

Touring riders looking for a full front and rear audio setup will be interested in the Wild Boar Audio 800-Watt Amp/Front Speaker and 6˝ x 9˝ Lid Kit. This complete kit includes fairing speakers, saddlebag lids with Wild Boar 6˝ x 9˝ speakers, and 2 amps. The amplifiers install easily inside the inner fairing, and since the kit is pre-tuned to the factory radio, getting the system set up and sounding great is a cinch. The plug-and-play wire harness allows the radio’s fader to work, too. This system includes one of the most notable features of Wild Boar Audio and Hogtunes products, which they call R.E.M.I.T. circuitry. This tiny but significant proprietary technology provides excellent FM reception from a Class D amp. Riders who simply want to upgrade the sound at the front of their bike will appreciate the Wild Boar Audio 150-Watt Amp/Front Speaker Kit. This easy-to-install kit works with the factory radio to boost sound quality without the need to install a whole new stereo. The kit includes a 150-Watt amp, Wild Boar speakers and a Bluetooth controller. The

Maximum Air for Milwaukee-Eights

W

hen it comes to airflow to an engine, the more volume you can push though, the more power you can make. That’s why horsepower-hungry riders place so much emphasis on performance intakes, ported cylinder heads, big valves and high-flow exhausts. And, for those who are committed to stuffing as much clean air into their Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight

lid lets your customers look in on the spacious airbox – after all, something this exceptional deserves to be seen. Even just a glance at this filter tells you that it’s going to flow a lot of air. And boy, does it. Available in 1.8-inch deep or 2.8-inch-deep sizes, the Boom Box filter provides either 160-square inches or 261-square inches of surface area, respectively. Why is that important? Because when it comes to air filters, more area means more flow.

engines as possible, Alloy Art now has the Boom Box air cleaner kit for 2017 through 2022 models. This box is a beast, and is an ideal match for highly modified motors that need maximum air flow. Alloy Art’s new Boom Box air cleaner kit has an extremely large side-mounted airbox filter surface area, all while maximizing the rider’s leg clearance. Developed with input from racers in the popular V-Twin racing scene, the Boom Box is designed with a forward-offset shape along with a slanted and angled filter that maximizes air flow and legroom. This made-in-America assembly has an injection-molded polymer body that’s lightweight and durable, and there’s a velocity stack molded right into the plate to help usher air into the throttle body. The kit also comes with oversize breather bolts (with a 0.192-inch diameter compared to the restrictive 0.09-inch stock bolts) as well as larger brass fittings and four feet of ¼-inch ID breather hose. A clear

Here’s the thing with air filters – In order for them to do their job (filter dust and dirt and debris out of the air) they have to restrict airflow. However, there is a solution that provides adequate filtration to protect the engine, while also optimizing air flow, and that’s increased filter area. While filter media needs to be restrictive to do its job, if you provide more of it for air to pass through, you increase airflow. That’s why stock air filters are pleated, and it’s why Alloy Art went to town increasing the surface area on the Boom Box. The Boom Box is available for 2017 through 2022 FLHT/ FLHR/FLTRX and FLTRU models plus the Trike. It will also fit all 2018 through 2022 Softails. ■

Lowering Kits for Comfort, Looks

N

ow that the summer riding season is over for many, it’s a great time for riders to make upgrades. Adding a lowering kit is a simple way to quickly change a motorcycle’s look, and it’s a great way to give a rider the comfort they’re looking for in terms of ride height and ergonomics. Müller Motorcycle offers three lowering kits to fit a range of Harley-Davidson, Evo, M8 and Twin Cam models. The company also has a compressor tool to make lowering a bike easier than ever.

Müller Motorcycle’s lowering kits offer riders a great range of adjustability when lowering their bikes.

The lowering kit can reduce the ride height by as much as 1.6 inches (40mm), but since the kit is fully adjustable, the rider can choose how low they want to go. Riders can go as low as possible, while those who want a comfort adjustment can fine-tune the height. Müller Motorcycle engineers and manufactures its lowering kits in Germany, using stainless steel and billet aluminum for quality and durability. That means riders can set the height and hit the road with confidence. Installing a lowering kit is a lot easier with the Müller Motorcycle spring compressor tool. It clamps to the shock absorber and holds the spring in place so the kit can be bolted on without hassle. The tool is designed for M8 Softails, but an adaptor lets it serve EVO and Twin Cam models, too. ■
