The OldBook Issue by D on Em de

Drag Specialties Magazine has previously featured the work of Mark Shadley. His transformation this year of the 1967 FL seen on the cover of this issue earned him the coveted honor of cover bike for the 2022/2023 Drag Specialties OldBook catalog. Be sure to check out the story starting on page 18 and see how he made use of the many products available to him in the catalog.

y family’s involvement with Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles pre-dates me. My father, Floyd Emde, won championship-level races on both brands throughout the 1940s, then he and my mother, Florence, got into the motorcycle business in National City, a suburb of San Diego, California. Since they were Harley-Davidson dealers when I got ready to ride, my first motorcycle was a single-cylinder Harley 165 (which I still have).

In other news, congratulations to Drag Specialties-sponsored riders Jared Mees and Cory Texter for their success in dirt track racing this year. Mees recently won the 2021 AFT SuperTwins title with Texter winning the Production Twins class.

My parents quickly outgrew that little store seen in the photo (that’s my mom posing with three of their customers, circa-1950). Over the next 30-plus years they built up to a three-store business in the area that carried several motorcycle brands.

And lastly, don’t forget that the 2022 Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo in Louisville is just around the corner on January 29-30. Your Drag sales rep can get you all the necessary details if you haven’t made your plans yet to attend. I hope to see you there! ■

The thought of old Harleys and Indians brings back nothing but great memories for me, making our annual OldBook issue one of my favorite publications of the year. This is the issue where we feature a story and build sheet of a motorcycle from the past, outfitted with parts and accessories from the Drag Specialties OldBook.

Ride Safe!

&G Racing’s Cory Texter clinched the AFT Production Twins title, riding his Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialtiesbacked Yamaha to the win and the championship at the Sacramento Mile I in September.

“Years of failure, being overlooked, sitting on the sidelines without a bike to ride, driving across the country, sleeping in a van watching main events I didn’t qualify for,” Texter said, reflecting on his journeyman career path. “Every rider has a different path with different obstacles along the way. always paved my own way and I’m proud of that. Big love to all who have supported me!” The title didn’t steal one ounce of fight from Texter, either. He battled all the way to the flag the following night at the Sacramento Mile II, capturing the win a scant 0.015 seconds ahead of Chad Cose. He pushed so hard that he slammed himself into the air fence after the finish line, fortunately without injury. ■

MotoAmerica King of the Baggers to Feature Six Rounds in 2022, Including Daytona!

T

hanks to the rousing success of the debut season of the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers Championship, MotoAmerica, the home of the premier motorcycle road racing series in North America, is excited to announce an expanded, six-round King of the Baggers series for the 2022 season.

Fittingly, the 2022 MotoAmerica King of the Baggers Championship will kick off during Bike Week in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Baggers will take to the high banks of Daytona International Speedway for the first time on March 10-12, in conjunction with the Daytona 200. From there, the series will head to Georgia and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in Braselton, April 22-24, the site of last year’s thrilling opening round that was won by Indian Motorcycles Tyler O’Hara. The championship will then revisit Road America, the site of 2021’s second round, June 3-5, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, a stone’s throw from Harley-Davidson’s headquarters in Milwaukee. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is where Kyle Wyman wrapped up the 2021 MotoAmerica King of the Baggers Championship for Harley-Davidson, and the iconic track in Monterey, California, will play host to round four of the series, July 8-10.

These are the only two names you need to remember when it comes to working on your ride. NAMZ & Badlands have all the electrical supplies and lighting modules you will ever need. Proudly made in the USA, our products are trusted worldwide by the industry’s finest. So don’t waste your time with anything less than the very best.

The final two rounds of the 2022 series will take place at tracks that are new to the King of the Baggers – Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota, the home state of Indian Motorcycles, July 29-31, and New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey, September 9-11. The three-round 2021 MotoAmerica King of the Baggers series generated more than 19 million impressions and an engagement of 1.2 million on social media with the races delivering over 1.1 million views and 43,000 total hours of viewing time on YouTube. “The popularity of last year’s threeround King of the Baggers series was such that it left our fans, teams, sponsors, and racers wanting more,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “So, we are giving them what they want – a six-race championship held at the three tracks that the Baggers competed on last year with an additional three rounds, including our first visit to Daytona International Speedway, added to the series. Quality T Cables, Trusted Name

o help powersports dealers best leverage social media platforms to engage with current and potential customers, the Motorcycle Industry Council provided its Ride With Us Social Content Playbook to members.

“A core principle of Ride With Us is connecting directly with riders and potential riders, and social media is a great tool to do just that,” said Cinnamon Kernes, vice president of market expansion at the MIC. “It’s also an easy way to welcome new riders to our world of two- and three-wheeling, and it can help them feel a sense of community, which will keep them riding.” This playbook is geared toward dealers who are managing social media on their own and/or need content ideas and tips to effectively manage social channels, especially on Instagram and Facebook. MIC members can find the playbook on the MIC website under the Resources tab, or by clicking here and logging in: Social Content Playbook (https://mic.org). The playbook is another component of Ride With Us, the powersports industry’s market expansion program. This multi-faceted initiative works to inspire people to try riding. helps them explore different types of vehicles and training and riding opportunities, engages them with dealers and other riders, and helps them integrate riding into their lives.

OE Quality, High-Performance Black Vinyl or Stainless-Steel Braided cables - including extended lengths.

Over the summer of 2021, the MIC unveiled a new 45-minute experience for people who had never ridden a motorcycle before — the Ride With Us Moto Intro. All the gear and bikes were provided, and Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoaches guided new riders through basic motorcycle controls, helping them experience their first ride in a closed, controlled environment.

See your Drag Specialties sales rep for more information

The MIC brought the free Ride With Us Moto Intro experience to five locations, including Comoto’s Get On! Moto Fest at the Texas Motor Speedway, Progressive IMS Outdoors shows in Sonoma, California, the Chicagoland area, Philadelphia, and at the Overland Expo Mountain West outside Denver. It was also held at three other locations this fall, including Atlanta, GA, Arlington, VA, and in southern California. ■

he 2022-2023 Drag Specialties OldBook is coming your way. Once again, it’s packed full of everything needed to transform a vintage golden-oldie Harley-Davidson to tip-top shape. It’s also packed with what’s needed to take one of those classic-year Harleys and breathe a whole new custom life into it, just like the bike on the cover of that new catalog you’ll soon have in your hands. This time the bike showing off all that’s possible is a 1967 Harley-Davidson FL, reborn and customized by Mark Shadley of Shadley Bros. Motorcycles of Whitman, Massachusetts. And with a whole new lease on life this ’67 FL never looked, rode or performed better. Mark started the transformation from dowdy to downright cool with a complete motorcycle, a runner and sometimes rider he’d owned for the past three years, what he calls,

DECEMBER 2021

“A real tired old FL.” It was one of those oldies with fringe hanging all over it, all white with a giant windshield up front. “I trimmed it down a little,” he explains. “Put it on a diet!” That’s an understatement. A rare, flat-side Shovel, one of those transition-year bikes between Panhead and Shovelhead, Mark got a pleasant surprise when he tore into the engine to begin the project. He found a set of 4½-inch S&S Cycle stroker flywheels inside. Completing the bigger-inch powerplant he bored out the cases for a pair of S&S barrels topped with S&S heads, bringing the displacement up to 93-inches. He continued the upgrade with a new oiling system, hydraulic lifters, upgraded electronic ignition and new starting and charging hardware. The transmission was rebuilt with an Andrews close-ratio 4-speed gearset. “Nothing wild,” Mark notes. “I just wanted it to be a reliable, trouble-free power package.”

OldBook Bike 1967 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FL REFRESH

That everyday usable, friendly bike theme carried through to the FL’s chassis upgrade. Up front the five-decade-old suspension was replaced with an all-new system Mark pieced together using triple-trees from a Harley Deuce, Drag Specialties upper tubes and Dyna Wide Glide lowers. A vast improvement in ride and handling, the setup also netted a disc front brake. Out back Mark adapted a pair of Progressive Suspension 444 Series shocks, 11 ½-inchers mounted with custom

lower brackets. The FL’s drum-style rear brake was retained, giving the bike a clean, uncluttered look on the right side. Mark also chose to replace all that OEM white-painted tin and everything associated with it. The gas tank was swapped out for a Drag Specialties 3½-gallon Fat Bob tank, and he added a Russ Wernimont front fender to cover the 40-spoke Drag Specialties laced wheel with a black powdercoated rim. For the back, he installed a Klock Werk’s 4-inch Stretch Benchmark rear fender over another laced wheel.

Up top is a custom, low-profile Spoon Seat designed by Mark and crafted by Drag Specialties Seats. There’s a custom dash in this mix, too, another piece crafted by Mark. All this went into place mostly without a hitch. Here and there custom brackets, spacers and mounts had to be fabricated, but nothing overly complicated and certainly expected in the construction of a one-off custom blending old and new. Speaking of new, the Cyclesmiths 14-inch Banana Board floorboards took a little finessing to put in place. While he was down there, Mark reworked the OE brake pedal into a more comfortable, more easily accessed leaned-forward position. He spent some time building a new custom staggered exhaust system featuring a front headpipe that’s a through-the-frame design. The OE oil tank gave way to a replacement, this time pirated from a Softail and subtly extended. “In the end,” Mark concludes, “I wanted a good-looking bike, but one that I could actually ride. A reliable bike that would fire up every time, run strong without drama, handle great and be comfortable.” The paint job, applied by Mark, more than checks off that “good looking” box. A base color of Drag Specialties Process Blue was accented with carefully thought out silver-leaf-and-black graphics outlined with red pinstriping. Check out how that detail extends across both the outer and inner primaries. The final touch was a pair of Drag Specialties logos rendered in the original 1970s style. This is the third time Mark Shadley’s been called on to come up with a bike showcasing the FatBook/OldBook possibilities. And, as always, he carefully picked through those catalogs to find most everything he needed, all from one source – Drag Specialties. “But this time,” he says, “there’s a difference. This bike is mine. I get to keep it!” And once his reborn FL has completed its Show Truck duties you can make book it’ll be Mark in the saddle, as often as possible and riding the wheels off one mighty fine 1967 Harley-Davidson. ■

hen they’re shopping for exhausts, “Riders want looks, sound, and performance,” says Darryl Bassani, founder of Bassani Xhaust. “Here, performance comes first, and always has.” Mr. Bassani isn’t kidding; a desire for more power is what prompted Bassani to craft his first exhaust system back in 1969.

The Road Rage is a popular option for riders, and for good reason. It’s got a familiar yet distinct style and really packs a punch. This exhaust is designed to increase horsepower and torque across the rev range while also adding an aggressive exhaust sound. The application list for this system is a mile long, so no matter what your customers ride, there’s likely a Road Rage designed to fit their bike.

Half a century later, performance is still the driving force behind every exhaust system Bassani makes for Harley-Davidson models, but that doesn’t mean the California-based company neglects the other two elements of the exhaust trifecta. Quite the contrary. A signature sound and stunning style are priorities as well, and something that Bassani pipes are trusted to deliver. For your customers riding Harleys, Bassani Xhaust’s lineup of 2-into-1 pipes is extensive. Whether they’re are on a Bagger, Dyna, Softail, Sportster, or V-Rod, and if it’s powered by a Twin Cam or Milwaukee-Eight engine, Bassani has them covered. All systems are handmade in the USA and embody over 50 years of experience. That means performance features like mandrel-bent tubes, stepped head pipes, contoured collectors, welded-on oxygen-sensor ports with 12mm adapters for non-EFI models, full or partial heat shields, and mufflers with removable end caps and baffles. Below is a selection of some of Bassani’s most popular options for your customers.

ROAD RAGE 2-INTO-1 EXHAUST SYSTEM

The foundation of the Bassani Xhaust lineup is the Road Rage 2-into-1system. This pipe takes a classic design and ups the ante with a host of performance features. Formed from mild steel or stainless, the Road Rage rocks uneven primary lengths and head pipes that step from 1¾ inches up to 17/8 inches to help maintain exhaust velocity and usher gasses out of the cylinders as quickly as possible. The head pipes join together at a contoured advanced collector and then flow out through Bassani’s louvered, packable baffles to unleash a legendary sound.

Road Rage 2-into-1

ROAD RAGE TYPE III 2-INTO-1 EXHAUST SYSTEM

If your customers are after a little more performance and style, the stainless-steel Road Rage Type III may fit the bill. For even flow out of the cylinders, the Type III’s rear head pipe takes a longer route to match the length of the front cylinder’s pipe. If riders have a high-flow intake, cams or other engine work, the Type III will help optimize those mods. As with Bassani’s other exhausts, the head pipes expand from 1¾ inches to 17/8 inches to maintain exhaust speed. The Road Rage Type III is crafted entirely from stainless steel, so this pipe is lighter than the mild-steel versions and has an aesthetic that only brushed 304 stainless steel can provide. The cherry on top with the Road Rage Type III is the welds. This system is TIG welded by hand to create beautiful pipe junctions that give the Type III a truly premium look.

ROAD RAGE B4 EXHAUST SYSTEM

The Road Rage B4 system is intended for mildly modified Harleys making less than 120 horsepower. Installed on mostly stock Twin Cam and MilwaukeeEight engines, the B4 helps unleash extra horsepower and torque. The B4 has equal-length head pipes that expand in diameter to help maintain exhaust velocity as the gasses cool. Special attention was paid to the B4’s collector, creating a merger that optimizes cylinder scavenging to help extract every extra pony out of the engine. The B4 system is a good choice for mild tuners, and is offered in chrome and a black ceramic finish.

Road Rage Type III 2-into-1

ROAD RAGE B1 EXHAUST SYSTEM

We saved the best for last, in part because the big-daddy B1 is not suitable for everyone. This exhaust was designed to address the needs of fully built engines producing more than 120 horsepower, so don’t even think about suggesting this system for anyone who hasn’t already installed bigger pistons, cams, and a free-flowing intake. For motors that are already optimized to move massive amounts of air, the B1 is the final piece of the puzzle. The B1 is bent from 16-gauge steel, with equal-length head pipes that feature either two or three steps, depending on the application. That means the head pipes on certain systems expand from 1¾ inches to 17/8 inches, and then up to a full 2 inches to match the needs of real heavy breathing motors. And, since high-performance engines produce a lot of heat, the B1 includes full-coverage heat shields.

When performance counts, your customers can count on Bassani Xhaust. Whether they’re riding a mostly stock machine or a fully built bruiser, Bassani has something to suit their needs. ■

After a two-year battle, Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees reclaimed the American Flat Track Championship.

JARED MEES WINS THE AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP! Scott Hunter/American Flat Track Photos

T

he stage was set for a winner-take-all final in the Progressive American Flat Track Series between dueling Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian teammates Jared Mees and Briar Bauman. All eyes were on five-time champion Mees, and two-time and defending champion Bauman, and the slugfest that was sure to unfold at the Charlotte Half-Mile. In the end, neither would finish the SuperTwins Main at the front of the field after a wild night and a dramatic conclusion to the 2021 season. Mees and Bauman were both looking sharp coming into the main event, the Indian Motorcycle teammates having split wins in the semi and the four-lap dash-for-cash. The opening laps of the main event saw the pair break away from the field, setting up for the battle royale everyone expected to see. However, the epic showdown ended prematurely, and in spectacular fashion, when race leader Bauman lost control of his FTR750. Bauman went into a tank slapper from which he almost successfully recovered, but not before tagging the hay bales, which sent him tumbling across the track. Mees ducked by to gain the lead, but third-place runner Sammy

Halbert got the worst of Bauman’s wreck. The number 69 rider launched off Bauman’s downed Indian FTR like a ramp to a height that might have actually cleared the fences. The red flag was already out by the time Halbert re-entered the atmosphere, spelling an end to Mees’ lead. The dramatic wreck could have handed the title to Mees on the spot, but somehow Bauman managed to get on his feet and line up on his backup bike for the restart. A valiant effort, but all for naught as he was clearly not in fighting shape. On the restart, Mees still had a fight on his hands for the win, which was nabbed at the last minute by Davis Fisher. But for Mees, second place was more than enough to clinch the title – his sixth premiere-class Grand National Championship. “I hand it to Briar,” Mees said after his victory. “He’s definitely one of the toughest competitors, if not the toughest competitor, I’ve ever dealt with. Briar made me step up my game these past few years, there’s no doubt about that. We

had a little ‘bro-out’ moment back there and I told him, ‘Hey, you’re gonna heal up and the battle will resume next year.’” As for Bauman, it was a rough end to the championship, one he went from dominating by more than 30 points to watching slip through his fingers. The defending champion had a 34-point advantage in the title chase after round 9 of 16, only for Mile-master Mees to come roaring back late in the season with a four-round win streak. But with the heart and class of a true champion, Bauman was able to find the silver lining after the Charlotte Half-Mile storm.

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian teammates Briar Bauman and Jared Mees duked it out for the American Flat Track Championship all season, with Mees claiming victory.

“One benefit from this was a reminder of how I feel about the sport,” said Bauman. “I’ve lived my entire life with the mentality that I will always bleed for flat track and unfortunately this season I was questioning if that was still reality. Saturday night reminded me I still will. Baumann added, “I’d like to congratulate Jared Mees on the championship. The guy doesn’t know the word quit. Neither does his team. You guys deserve it.” ■

New Slip-On for the Pan America 1250 Vance & Hines’ new Adventure Hi-Output 450 slip-on adds more horsepower and torque to the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250s.

I

f someone told you 10 years ago that Vance & Hines offered a slip-on exhaust system for an off-road HarleyDavidson motorcycle, you’d have questioned their knowledge about the American V-Twin motorcycle industry – or thought they were joking. Now, that’s exactly what Vance & Hines, one of the leading names in performance products for the Harley and metric markets, offers. By now, most enthusiasts know the Harley-Davidson model in question as the Pan America 1250. Actually, make that models, because the 1250 is joined by the more-option-ladened Pan America 1250 Special, and both models, quite frankly, have shaken the motorcycle industry’s much-celebrated Adventure bike segment. As a matter of fact, in Rider magazine’s Pan America road test, the editors stated with confidence, “… the Pan America 1250 Special can compete head-to-head with well-established players in the ADV segment.” Vance & Hines seems to think so, too. The Santa Fe Springs, California-based company offers a new lightweight slipon stainless steel exhaust – the Adventure Hi-Output 450 – that fits both new Harley models. According to Vance & Hines, the slip-on offers the Pan America’s 150-horsepower Revolution Max 1250 V-Twin engine a claimed five more horsepower, along with an additional 5 ft-lbs

30

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2021

of maximum torque. The company also touts that the new exhaust adds between 10-12 more ft-lbs of torque throughout the Pan Am’s midrange, considered the sweet spot in terms of power for Adventure riding. Those power figures aren’t an accident, either. Vance & Hines spent countless hours on the dyno perfecting the Hi-Output’s power curve and creating a noise suppression level through a precise baffling design, resulting in what the company describes as a “bold rumble” exhaust note. Further testing was conducted outdoors at a special off-road proving ground laid out in cooperation with Rawhide Adventures, perhaps the most recognizable Adventure bike school in America. Besides performance testing, Vance & Hines engineers paid close attention to the exhaust system’s configuration as mounted on the motorcycle. As the accompanying photos reveal, the new Adventure Hi-Output 450 is especially striking in appearance. Moreover, the bolt-on unit includes some very desirable features that surpass the bike’s OEM exhaust system. For starters, the system sheds six pounds from the bike’s overall weight. And, as we know, less weight translates to more performance.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

VANCE & HINES The unique styling of the Adventure Hi-Output 450 is designed to complement the Harley’s rugged appearance, and provide a “bold rumble” exhaust note.

There are no necessary modifications for mounting the system to the bike, either, even though the reconfigured connecting pipe is positioned to allow the rider more clearance for his right boot to rest on the foot peg, and to make it easier for locating the brake pedal while riding. According to Vance & Hines, the additional boot clearance was gained by routing the connecting pipe 1 inch closer to the engine case. Doing so also allowed Vance & Hines to fit a new, lighter weight stainless steel heat shield that prevents the rider’s boot from contacting the pipe. The new, and rather stylish, black ceramic-coated heat shield also limits exhaust heat from radiating to the rider’s boot. Perhaps the real beauty in the Adventure Hi-Output 450 system is the stainless-steel step-style canister. Crafted at the Vance & Hines facility, the brushed-finish canister’s diameter increases from 4 inches to 4½ inches at its end cap with optional spark arrestor. Indeed, the canister’s exterior appearance reflects Vance & Hines’ experience in manufacturing high-quality motorcycle exhausts. Most of all, the Hi-Output 450’s decibel level falls within the highly touted SAE J2825 standard.

The Hi-Output 450 was designed to be compatible with the Pan America 1250 Special’s OEM saddlebags.

And, should a rider’s exploration outing stretch into a multi-day adventure, the Hi-Output 450 was designed to be compatible with the Pan America 1250 Special’s OEM saddlebags, so riders can pack more than just the bare necessities. The Adventure Hi-Output 450 should also work with most aftermarket saddlebags that match the dimensions of the OE bags. ■

SEATING DISPLAY

A Stand for Seating Small Footprint, Big Impact

With the new four-way seat display a dealership can showcase the craftsmanship and style of popular Drag Specialties Seats such as the Predator.

B

uying a motorcycle seat tends to be a hands-on experience. Customers want to feel the finish, peek underneath to check out the quality of the construction and determine whether the seat has the right mix of compliance and firmness. With the new Drag Specialties Seats four-way dealer seat display, customers can easily check out four different styles, without dealers needing to sacrifice a lot of floor space. The four-way seat display goes for height instead of a wide footprint, and the 36-inch square display base stands 79 inches tall. This design accomplishes two things – not only does it save space on the showroom floor, but the height makes it easy for customers to spot the display. The Drag Specialties Seats sign at the top of the black powder-coated steel frame is a real attention-grabber. The four-way display will accommodate virtually any Drag Specialties Seats design thanks to its adjustability. The hanging hooks are adjustable in 2-inch increments up to 12 inches, and the vertical supports have a foot of height adjustability, so even longer seats can easily hang from the display. Hanging a Drag Specialties seat is simple; just slide the rear seat tab over the hook. That seat tab can be found on about 95 percent

of Drag’s seats, so it takes just seconds to hang most of the applications found in the OldBook and the FatBook. Assembly is easy, too, and the display even comes with floor leveling pads to ensure a sturdy setup. By allowing customers to get an up-close, hands-on look at a variety of Drag Specialties seats, they can check out the handmade quality for themselves. Drag has been manufacturing its seats since the 1970s at its headquarters in Rogers, Minnesota, making the seats as much of an American classic as the bikes they are built for. Other hallmarks of Drag Specialties seats include the 3/16-inch ABS thermoformed seat base and carpeted bottom, which combine for a perfect fit that won’t scratch the bike’s paint. A molded, flexible urethane foam gives each seat its unique shape while providing plenty of comfort. Customers can also check out various covers and stitching. Most Drag seats are topped with a high-quality automotive vinyl that has a great leather look, while still being low-maintenance and long-lasting. Seats like the Predator, which is great for V-Twins of all ages, is available with a solar-reflective leather panel in the seating area. The four-way seat display is also a great place for seats created through the Drag Specialties Custom Seat Order Program to show off the many stitch patterns, thread colors and seat covering options available. ■

TIRES

Rolling Growth

Brick-and-Mortar Sales Opportunity

In addition to Dunlop offering dealers great incentives and rewards through its Pro Dealer and Associate Dealer programs, the company also offers a range of POP materials for dealership showrooms.

I

n a time when many people lean toward online retail for daily items, scores of riders across the nation still hold a high value to walking into their local dealer for the parts and accessories they need. Whether it’s for a daily commute or a weekend cruise, riders enjoy the convenience of getting what they need the same day, especially when it comes to tires. With decades of experience designing and manufacturing tires in the USA and connecting directly with their customers, Dunlop has not only learned what riders need in tire performance and reliability, but they understand and value the key role each Dunlop brick-and-mortar dealer plays. Five years ago Dunlop introduced its Pro Dealer program designed to support brick-and-mortar dealers across the United States, providing them additional benefits and tools to help drive their success. Drag Specialties introduced many dealers to this program at its launch and continue to help support its great benefits today. Virtually any powersports dealer can benefit from being a Pro Dealer thanks to Dunlop’s versatile lineup of tire offerings covering everything from V-Twin to street sport. Additional requirements simply include carrying a minimum of thirty Dunlop tires in stock, and with the increasing number of riders our industry is seeing, thirty tires will go quickly. The scales are certainly tipped in the direction of benefits with the Pro Dealer program, including promotions with Drag Specialties, Dunlop Dollar rewards with the opportunity to earn $5 per tire set sold, free point-ofpurchase materials for the showroom, access to Dunlop’s

user-friendly website and app and even an official Dunlop dealer listing through their dealer locator. Something that’s most notable, however, are the exclusive rebates. They’re designed to include tires and service so parts and service departments can simultaneously benefit from having what in many cases is a $60 advantage over online retailers. With riding and racing experience nationwide, Dunlop understands that powersports dealers vary greatly in size and support needs based on their location and the markets they serve. As of the beginning of 2021, Dunlop introduced its Associate Dealer program designed on an entry-level scale to help dealers engage with Dunlop, familiarize with how their tires can help their customers and ultimately help drive some growth until they’re ready to step into the Pro Dealer program. Brick-and-mortar dealers that can mount tires can join the Associate Dealer program by simply purchasing at least six Dunlop tires at the time of signup. With that, benefits include the Dunlop dealer website and app access, pointof-purchase materials and even the same $5 per tire set sold with the Dunlop Dollar rewards program. ■

Style, Power and Performance 50-State Stage 1 Build

On the dyno, this setup unleashes 10 more horsepower at peak and pushes maximum torque from 99.6 foot/pounds to 108.7 foot/pounds while boosting torque across the entire rev range. This proven performance means better acceleration at all engine speeds, all while abiding by state and federal emissions rules. More power and that 50-state designation come by way of careful engineering on the part of S&S. The SuperSreet features CNCbent stainless-steel tubing that’s assembled right here in the USA. To improve cylinder scavenging and broaden the torque curve, the SuperStreet’s head pipes tapers from 1¾ inches to 1.875 inches, and exhaust gases pass through a high-flow catalytic converter of S&S’s own design. Oxygen-sensor ports allow use of wide band or stock O2 sensors, and the kit comes with a set of S&S’s tapered exhaust gaskets and fresh flange nuts for an easier installation.

With a combination of S&S Cycle’s SuperStreet 2-into-1 exhaust and the company’s Stealth Air Cleaner kit, your Milwaukee-Eight customers can put together a complete stage 1 build that’s 50-state legal and provides plenty of that well-known “Proven Performance.”

M

any Harley-Davidson riders want a performance exhaust system, but in some areas an aftermarket pipe will attract too much unwanted attention. If keeping things legal is a concern, check out S&S Cycles’ SuperStreet 2-into-1 (CARB EO# K-010-13) exhaust system, which is 50-state compliant and offered in fitments for 2018 through 2021 Harleys, from the Sportster on through to the Softail models. As with all things S&S, performance takes center stage with the SuperStreet exhaust. When combined with the Stealth Air Cleaner kit – which are 50-state compliant for Milwaukee-Eight models – for a complete stage 1 build, bikes like the Fat Boy 114 make significant gains in power. S&S Cycles’ Stealth Air Cleaner kits (CARB EO# D-355-30).

Offered in full chrome, chrome with black end cap, and black with black end cap and the new full stainless system for late Softail models, the SuperStreet’s slick 2-into-1 design looks good and works with OEM and similar size saddlebags. The pipe is also compatible with floorboards, forward controls and factory foot pegs. However, if your customers run mid controls, they’ll need to install S&S’s brake pedal kit.

The SuperStreet exhaust system is a great mod on its own, but to extract all the power S&S is known for your customers should pair it with a Stealth Air Cleaner Kit for Milwaukee-Eight bikes. This 50-state setup comes with a washable and reusable filter element that offers more surface area for a massive increase in air flow over OEM. The radiused inlet of the high-strength polymer back plate and the tapered stinger shape of the top plate streamline airflow into the engine for more power and better throttle response across the rev range. Your customers can finish the Stealth kit off with one of many S&S’s stylish covers to complete the project. ■

BRAKES

Hard Stop

Where Style and Function Merge

Performance Machine’s huge lineup of high-performance brake calipers provide a big boost in braking precision and lever feel, offering great stopping power for a range of Harley-Davidson models.

W

ith all the work that goes into making your customers’ bikes more powerful and better looking with exhaust systems, intakes and other go-fast parts, it’s worthwhile to direct riders’ attention down to the wheels. No, not for custom rims (though Performance Machine certainly has those) but for a brake upgrade in the form of the company’s ultra-rigid, ultra-stylish billet calipers. Performance Machine hit the market with high-performance billet calipers back in 1980, and they’re still at it. Right away the aesthetic appeal of PM’s calipers is obvious. While most OEM calipers look like unappealing black blobs, Performance Machine’s calipers are like works of art. CNC machined from solid bars of billet aluminum, these premium four-piston calipers are milled into a minimalist, rigid form that reduces weight and helps shed heat for better brake performance. Most importantly, the billet construction is significantly more rigid than cast designs, leading to less component flex under heavy use and therefore stronger, more consistent brake performance. Performance Machine also applies extra attention to the calipers’bores, utilizing differential bore technology to ensure uniform pad pressure. As a result, riders regularly report a dramatic increase in brake precision and lever feel. Toss in quality, low-friction piston seals and powerful, heat-tolerant sintered brake pads and Performance Machine’s calipers are an easy win for those who want stronger stopping power. Designed for easy installation, these calipers bolt up using

40

DRAG SPECIALTIES MAGAZINE

DECEMBER 2021

supplied hardware and are compatible with stock rotors or aftermarket discs of OEM dimensions. It wouldn’t be a proper kit without all the needed parts, so PM calipers come with pre-installed brake pads as well as a banjo bolt with washers and stylish mounting hardware. For rear applications, a machined-aluminum bracket is provided to replace the chunky cast piece found on most models. To help develop and verify functionality, Performance Machine has an in-house brake dyno where parts are put through their paces. This rigorous testing process ensures PM’s calipers maintain proper pressure, do not flex, provide superior stopping power, and hold up to heavy use to bring your customers’ motorcycles to a sure, controlled stop. Considering Performance Machine has been fashioning billet calipers for more than 40 years, it makes sense that their application list is as broad as a Night Rod Special’s rear tire. As long as it’s a Harley (for the latest radial caliper, the bike doesn’t even need to be from Milwaukee, it just needs to have PM’s fork legs or a custom front end), there’s a beautiful front and rear caliper kit available for your customers’ bikes. Calipers are offered in a variety of colors including polished aluminum, chromed, contrast cut, and black-anodized Black Ops finishes to suit your customers’ tastes. ■

IQUI MOLY is well-known for producing products that go in motorcycles, specifically oils and additives. The company also makes a lot of products that are designed to go on the motorcycle, with options ranging from everyday items like grease to an antiseize compound. A lot of those products were created with service shops in mind, providing solutions to professionals who need to get work done as quickly and efficiently as possible. By keeping a supply of LIQUI MOLY fluids and lubricants on hand, mechanics are ready for whatever job comes their way. Grease is a lot more nuanced than it used to be, which is why LIQUI MOLY offers several versions. One of them is the LM 50 Litho HT, which is a high-tech grease. Designed for high performance, this grease has a wide temperature range and is ideal for wheel bearings as well as front and rear axle bolts. The formula is a lithium complex soap grease, making it resistant to water, oxidation and corrosion. Mechanics looking for a versatile grease option will want to keep the LIQUI MOLY Long-Life Grease on hand. It can be used on a lot of areas of a motorcycle, including steering head bearings, swingarm bearings and even brake and clutch lever pivots. The Long-Life Grease is especially great on heavily-loaded bearings and joints, offering the durability that such high-stress areas require to keep functioning properly.

LM 508 Anti-Seize Compound

Long-Life Grease

When it comes to spots that are subject to high temperatures and high pressure, the LM 508 Anti-Seize Compound ensures that things keep operating just like they’re supposed to. This release agent can handle temperatures up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it is ideal on places like motor mounts, triple clamp bolts, screw connections and other high-temp, high-stress areas. LIQUI MOLY created the LM 48 Installation Paste to make assembly of camshafts, piston skirts, engine components and gearboxes a smooth job. The paste is made from a high-performance tungsten disulfide that also contains zinc sulfide, graphite and flourides. All those chemicals add up to create a solid press-fit assembly lubricant that can handle heavy-duty applications. It adheres evenly to smooth surfaces, and excess application is no problem. While all of these products are great for ensuring the mechanical parts of the bike work properly, the electrical system is every bit as important. LIQUI MOLY’s Electronic Spray is a fully synthetic contact spray that cleans out contaminants and helps repel moisture. The spray will penetrate layers of oxides and sulfides to keep contacts clean, but at the same time, it is gentle on all of the bike’s parts, including on paint and plastic. ■

Right Risers

Performance Parts for Harley-Davidsons

T

he V-Twin market is ever changing and many of LA Choppers’ customers are looking for new products that enhance the control and handling of their hot-rod Harley-Davidsons. Well, the company is ready to deliver by introducing its new Performance Risers.

LA Choppers’ new Performance Risers are designed to offer firm control for steering and finessing hot-rod Harley-Davidson models. They come in three heights and in straight and pullback options.

The top clamp is offered in 1-inch and 1¼-inches clamp diameters and feature heavy-duty ARP 12-point hardware.

The Performance Risers’ top clamp also serves as a mounting point for LA Choppers’ gauge mounts, which come in three configurations.

After building up that Dyna or Performance Bagger with a big-inch motor, upgraded suspension and the right rubber, adding a set of performance risers can really help with control, comfort and finesse. LA Choppers already offers the Kage Fighter handlebar lineup to meet current performance and handling needs, now they offer the performance risers. Riders looking for risers with great structural integrity should check them out. These geometrically shaped risers not only look like a Stealth Fighter, but they also offer aggressive agility and styling. This set-up deviates from traditional round 1-inch, 1¼-inch, or 1½-inch riser posts. The new Performance Risers have more material, thus giving a larger footprint to the triple tree. With more material comes more structural integrity, and less cross torsion flex. That may make them sound heavy, but these risers are CNC machined from billet aluminum, so they are very light and very strong. Beefy ARP 12-point hardware crowns the machined one-piece top clamp. The Performance Risers are offered in 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch heights, and in 1-inch and 1¼-inch clamp diameters. There are pullback and straight options available, and they come in black anodized or raw aluminum finishes. So, what to do now with that Softail or Dyna speedometer? LA Choppers has your customers covered. The gorgeous machined top clamps function as a space to mount the Performance Riser gauge mounts. The Softail or Dyna mounts integrate into the top clamp of the Performance Risers, giving a very clean, seamless look. The mount itself is on a hinge so customers can adjust it to best suit their riding positions. There are three gauge mounts available for these new risers – a Softail digital gauge mount, a single analog mount and a dual analog mount. All of them are made here in the USA. ■

Saddlebags and Tour Paks are great for storage, but like any piece of luggage, smaller items can get lost in their depths, or things can be nearly impossible to find when looking for something on a dark roadside. Custom Dynamics has a simple, practical solution for that with the Interior Light Kits for saddlebags and Tour Paks. Available as a kit with two or three light bars, each bar has 18 white LEDs to light up the inside of the luggage, making it easy to find anything. Pre-taped for convenience, the light bars simply adhere to the inside of the saddlebag or TourPak, and they turn on with an included controller. WINDSHIELDS

Revolutionary Flow

New Fitments for Flare Windshields windshield design. This patented design proved to direct air resistance not only up and over riders and passengers with the “flip” at the top of the windshield, but around them as well with the “hips” at the sides. This, in combination with providing 20 pounds of down force, results in a windshield design that provides riders with more comfort, less fatigue and confidence inspiring stability. Klock Werks left no stone unturned with Flare, constructing them using hard-coated polycarbonate, a vastly more durable material over acrylic alternatives. With incredible bending strength and breaking resistance, this material stands strong for many miles to come.

Klock Werks now offers its popular Flare windshields in fitments for Harley-Davidson FXRP and FXRT models.

B

ack in 2006, a small group of passionate garage builders ended up building the world’s fastest Bagger. The dedication to chasing their ever-evolving goal of building upon each success fueled the group’s fire to keep testing, developing and improving. To this day, the group at Klock Werks remains a tight-knit crew of genuine V-Twin enthusiasts and innovators. During their record setting run at Bonneville with their Bagger, they noticed quite a bit of front-end instability at high speeds. Despite succeeding in their record chase, they stayed the course and spent extremely beneficial time in a professional wind tunnel. This showed them they were getting approximately 30 pounds of lift in the front end due largely to how air was passing the front fairing and windshield. Testing led to a prototype and further testing finally led Klock Werks to what is now the company’s iconic Flare

Ride-enhancing performance of Flare windshields has been proven through countless miles on Harley-Davidson Road Glides across the country, adapting to many riders’ needs with sizes ranging from 6-inches up to 15-inches. Klock Werks’ latest adaptation of the Flare windshield is for the increasingly popular FXRP and FXRT models, opening a door for another wide range of riders to enjoy the enhanced experience. Flare windshields for FXRP and FXRT models are supplied with a 9-inch height, a size the Klock Werks team determined to be very versatile on the old-school fairing. They are available in a dark smoke or black finish, allowing customers to choose the look that complements their bikes. Flare windshields are made with pride in the USA. Klock Werks’ innovative passion doesn’t end with Flare windshields. They offer a wide range of additional accessories, from fairing vent screens to machined billet mounts and inserts, and even a variety of stylized front fenders. ■

The Timeless Style of Spoked Wheels

O

ld bikes don’t go out of style; they just become classics. The same can be said for laced wheels, an old-school design that has somehow managed to stay cool all these years. Drag Specialties knows that pairing the two together is a match made in motorcycle heaven, which is why the latest laced wheel design from the company is aimed squarely at older models. These new Drag Specialties gloss black laced wheels recently debuted with three different front fitments and two rear fitments. Designed for older V-Twins, there are options to suit 1973 up to 1999 FL models.

LACED WHEELS

Lacing Up

The 40-spoke wheels accept tube tires on the gloss black powder coated rims. The steel hubs are black, too, but the spokes are chrome to create a sleek contrast look. Arriving fully assembled and trued with the bearings already installed, these wheels are ready to roll as soon as they arrive. To make the switch to laced wheels even easier, Drag designed these to use OEM mounting hardware and OEM-style rotors. These latest wheels are part of an extensive variety of Drag Specialties laced wheels available for V-Twins both old and new. There are laced wheel assemblies available in 40-spoke, 60-spoke and 80-spoke designs, all featuring chrome-plated steel rims, billet aluminum hubs and polished stainless steel spokes for plenty of flash. Since laced wheels are always such a popular option across all riding styles, Drag Specialties produces them in fitments for most popular models.

Of course, for the real DIY enthusiasts, Drag also has rims and spokes available separately so builders can get the exact size and look desired by mixing and matching. The spun steel chrome rims will accept 40 spokes, and the sizes go up to a 5½-inch width to suit looks from skinny to wide. Also available is a full line-up of Drag Specialties tubes to go along with any laced wheel. The chrome and stainless steel 40-spoke sets that can be paired with the rims come with a spoke wrench to make them easier to install. Building Up a Hot-Rod Clutch

S

tock Harley-Davidson clutch baskets can often become the weak link in a V-Twin that’s received some hot-rod hardware like high-performance exhausts, cams and big-bore kits. Once that impressive jump in horsepower and torque are added, a stock basket just won’t cut it. BDL’s new all-billet clutch basket puts added strength where it’s needed most. It’s designed to fit 2007 through 2010 Twin Cams with the wider clutch-hub bearing, the later 2011 through 2017/2018 bikes and all the Milwaukee-Eights through 2021 with the new, narrower and smaller bearing. In all cases, BDL’s new, robust basket is a great upgraded alternative to the OE clutch baskets. Designed with snap-ring grooves to accommodate either clutch-hub bearing size, BDL includes both bearings with the new basket. In direct-replacement applications, Milwaukee-Eight owners will use the narrower 2011 to 2017/2018 style bearing.

One unique benefit of the new BDL basket, especially for riders with those later-year Twin Cams and the M8s, is that its dual-retaining ring groove design allows the use of the older version wider clutch-hub bearing in newer applications when an older OE clutch hub is used. This adds more strength to the upgrade by controlling flex, offering a stronger set-up overall. A wide-application piece coming with just one part number, the new BDL billet clutch basket is available now. For those customers looking to build a big-inch road ripper V-Twin, that extra strong billet basket and its unique design is a great option. ■

The billet clutch basket features a unique dualretaining groove design that gives customers a choice of what clutch-hub bearing they want to use. It comes with two different size bearings.

Significantly stronger than OE in all respects, the new BDL basket is totally machined from 6061 hard-anodized aluminum. BDL has retained all the banding material up at the top of the basket, too, making an already-strong basket even stronger yet. Additionally, the drive-sprocket is machined into the basket itself as an integral part of the piece. During the R&D/prototyping stages the basket and its integral drivesprocket were spin-tested to 10,000 rpm. BDL supplies the basket with a new ring gear already installed.

BDL’s new billet clutch basket is a great upgrade over the OE part, especially for those customers adding high-performance exhausts, cams and big-bore kits.

LUGGAGE

Ballistic Bags

Saddlebags Designed for Tough Rides rides. To add an extra layer of protection, an included waterproof nylon rain cover stays in place with elastic and a drawstring. Inside the saddlebag, EVA foam panels help add structure, even when the bag is empty. Finding items inside loaded saddlebags can sometimes feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but the high-vis orange interior makes it a lot easier to find things.

Riders looking for smaller luggage options should check out the EXFIL-18, which features a universal fit and storage that keeps items within easy reach.

B

iltwell wants riders to have fun, and it’s a lot easier to have fun when a rider has complete confidence in their equipment. Whether it’s hard parts or soft luggage, Biltwell builds welldesigned, aggressively tested parts to make sure even the wildest rides stay fun. Recently, Biltwell expanded its popular EXFIL line of adventure-ready luggage to include two rugged saddlebag designs. The EXFIL-36 is the first full-sized saddlebag from the brand, and the smaller EXFIL-18 is an updated take on the old EXFIL-7.

Biltwell measures capacity of its bags by how many 12-ounce cans a piece of luggage can hold, so the EXFIL-36 will hold 36 cans. That means the main compartment is a big one, and it has double zippers for easy access as well as three elastic mesh pockets and one vertical pocket to make it easy to organize contents. Adjustable straps keep everything where it’s supposed to be. The bag’s bottoms are reinforced, too. The EXFIL-36 also has a mesh document pocket under a waterproof flap, a large exterior pocket and a clamshell pocket. For riders who have less stuff to carry, the EXFIL-18 has the capacity for 18 cans. Like its big brother, the EXFIL-18 features a main compartment plus two exterior compartments for smaller items and things that need to be in easy reach. ■

Featuring hand-crafted construction and ballistic-grade materials, these two saddlebag designs are made by riders, for riders. Thoughtful design touches make long trips easier, like a hidden cable port into the main compartment so it’s convenient to charge devices on the go. The exterior is covered with MOLLE straps and D-rings, making it easy to attach additional accessories and gear. Mounting was designed for convenience, too, and the bags have a universal fit and pair with a variety of aftermarket saddlebag supports. To keep the saddlebags secure, the two-piece mounting yoke has an adjustable hook and loop panel attached via large, heavy-duty zippers. Each Biltwell saddlebag begins with a 1680 denier ballistic nylon exterior. The UV-coated material resists fading and moisture, and of course it stands up to the toughest

A Revolutionary Amp for Audio Kits Hogtunes’ new QC “Quad Cast” 475-RM amplifier features a special design that results in an amp with exceptional heat management and a small size. The QC Ultra 6 kit includes the QC amp, a 225W two-channel amp plus the Gen 4 front, rear and lower speakers.

AUDIO UPGRADES

Amped Up Technology

H

ogtunes has made a lot of strides when it comes to audio technology, introducing things like R.E.M.I.T. circuitry in its amps, which provides outstanding FM reception with a class D amp. Now, the brand has made yet another breakthrough with the QC “Quad Cast” 475-RM amplifier. In addition to being sold by itself, this amp is featured in the new Hogtunes QC Ultra 4 kit and QC Ultra 6 kit. Both of these kits are designed for Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited, Road Glide Ultra and Ultra Trike models, fitting into the fairing seamlessly without requiring additional mounting plates.

The QC Ultra 4 kit includes the QC amp along with G4 “Gen 4” front and rear speakers.

The QC 475-RM is a 300Watt, four-channel amplifier, and it features a revolutionary design made using cast aluminum and 3D design technology. Through careful engineering, the QC is able to regulate heat only in the specific areas that need it. The result is an amp with exceptional heat management and a small size. Areas of the amp that need the heat sink are thicker, while all other surface areas are thinner, resulting in a design that saves both weight and space. By controlling the heat of the amp, the entire system is strong, loud and can be used for a good, long time. The amp’s ability to control heat makes the QC kits especially great in high-heat climates. And yes, of course, the QC amp features the proprietary R.E.M.I.T. circuitry that Hogtunes introduced several years ago. The QC amp might be revolutionary in its design and technology, but it does share one important thing in common with all other Hogtunes amplifiers – it is designed to put minimal strain on the bike’s charging system. Hogtunes audio solutions are designed specifically for motorcycles,

so not only do they fit perfectly, they also minimize power usage and provide quality sound that is ideal for listening even with highway noise. The QC Ultra 4 kit includes the QC amp along with G4 “Gen 4” front and rear speakers. The QC Ultra 6 kit includes the QC amp, a 225W two-channel amp plus the Gen 4 front, rear and lower speakers (lower fairing speaker adaptors for liquid-cooled bikes are included). Hogtunes designs its kits to be as user-friendly as possible, which means installation should never be a challenge. Each kit comes complete with all required wiring, mounting plates, mesh grills and any other necessary hardware. The plug-and-play design ensures a smooth upgrade from the stock audio system to the Hogtunes system. No radio reflash is required, either. ■

Spring Into Action Completing a Performance Valvetrain Package

Feuling’s highperformance Beehive valve spring kits are a perfect way to complete a valvetrain upgrade. They come in three levels of performance – Econo, Endurance and High Load.

S

uccessful hot-rod engines are a package deal. One change to a V-Twin generally mandates another, and that’s certainly true with valvetrain swaps. Performance cams work best when matching lifters, pushrods and valve springs are included, and Feuling Parts has you covered. Feuling’s high-performance Beehive® valve springs are available for Sportsters, Evos, Twin Cams and Milwaukee-Eights with three levels of performance available – Econo, Endurance and High Load. Kits include custommatched Beehive springs along with lightweight retainers, machined spring seats, seat shims, valve locks and premium Viton valve seals with spring-loaded wiper systems. With Beehive spring kits, V-Twins are able to rev quicker, run smoother, run quieter and more accurately control valve action from idle to redline. Much more so than conventional dual-spring setups allow. Machined from premium stress-relieved conical ovate wire each spring is designed, treated and tested for the application. Endurance Beehives – recommended for cams with up to a .565-inch lift on M8s and .650-inch lift on Twin Cams – use hightensile chrome silicon wire that’s shot-peened, heat treated and given a NexTex® finish to assure high performance and long life. High Load Beehive springs are designed to control steep-ramp/high-lift cams with up to a .750-inch lift on Twin Cams and .650-inch on M8s, and are shot-peened and feature a nitrided heat treatment along with a Nano Peen™ polish. They have an extremely high level of fatigue life to handle the demands of the highest performance engines. Rounding out the trio, Econo Beehives are budget friendly and made from the same premium conical ovate wire as the Endurance and High Load springs, this time developed to match the demands of mild-performance engines with .585-inch or smaller lift camshafts. In most cases Beehive valve springs are direct replacements for OEM requiring no special machining or rocker-box clearancing. The final piece of a total valvetrain upgrade, they’re available now from Drag Specialties. ■

fter Müller Motorcycle introduced a lowering kit for Milwaukee-Eight Harley-Davidson models, the German brand took things one step further by designing a spring compressor to make mounting it easy. The spring compressor is an ideal tool to keep in a service shop since it’s one of those small items that can save a lot of headaches. By using the spring compressor, installing a Müller Motorcycle lowering kit goes a lot faster. The shock absorber is securely clamped in the compressor, which means each step of the installation can be carried out comfortably and easily. The spring compressor is designed for all Milwaukee-Eight Softail models, but thanks to an adapter ring, it can also service Evo and Twin Cam models. The Müller Motorcycle lowering kit for Milwaukee-Eight models features continuous adjustability, meaning the rider can choose exactly how low they want to go. Riders can opt to go as much as 40mm lower than stock. This range of height options makes the lowering kit exceptionally versatile. By having them in stock, dealers

can accommodate riders who want everything from just a little lowering to a dramatic difference. To ease installation, the lowering kit comes with a replacement bearing, and the kit can be mounted without requiring the threaded rod to be shortened. In all, the Müller Motorcycle lowering kit was designed to not only operate smoothly, but also to install with ease. That’s where the spring compressor comes in, making the whole process even easier. ■

Popular Handgrips are Ready to Go

M

uch can be said about the effects that the Covid-19 pandemic had on world commerce. One telling scar – in economic terms – has been the worldwide supply-chain backup of goods, including products for motorcycles. The gridlock stems from temporary closures, caused by the pandemic itself, of factories, warehouses and labor. But that same gridlock had little effect on Avon Grips’ capacity to supply handgrips for the American V-Twin market. When the economy regained momentum, Avon Grips was able to quickly ramp up production, recently peaking to nearly 95 percent capacity, at its 45,000-square-foot facility in Kingwood, Texas. A typical work week at Avon Grips can see as many as 1,500 sets of handgrips produced. Indeed, Avon Grips’ response has been successful in terms of maintaining inventory because all of its motorcycle handgrips are made here in the USA; transporting the product to the Drag Specialties warehouse relies only on rail and truck delivery systems within the 48 lower

states. There are no oceans to cross, which means that there are no large container transport ships (many of which have been forced to anchor outside their ports of entry due to the supply-chain backup) in the logistics equation. Consequently, all Avon Grips, including the popular Custom Contour and Air Cushion variations, are available now. ■

The Ripper Range Unique Billet Parts

W

hen a bandsaw cuts through a chunk of billet aluminum, most people consider the resulting tear-line to be nothing more than an unsightly rip through the aluminum. Conventional wisdom suggests that those jagged edges need to be smoothed out if that piece of raw alloy is to gain even a hint of styling integrity as a custommotorcycle part. Custom motorcycle builder and parts manufacturers Jerry and Kathleen Covington, who compose Covington’s Customs in Woodward, Oklahoma, don’t follow conventional wisdom when designing and developing their line of custom billet aluminum parts for HarleyDavidsons. And, it was a breakaway from conventionality that led to their latest styling theme, the Ripper series. As the name suggests, Ripper parts are fashioned from raw billet aluminum, using CNC technology to cut and shape them into what constitutes Covington’s new line of parts for Harley Baggers, cruisers and Softails. “Every ounce of every Ripper part originates as aircraft-grade 6061 T-6 billet aluminum that’s made right here in the USA,” Jerry explains. “The Ripper design looks like you ripped through the billet with a blade. We start with a solid billet aluminum piece cut to size from the CNC machine. When the actual machining process begins, the tool rips through the aluminum to make the prescribed design.”

Covington’s Customs unveiled its new Ripper range of parts and accessories, a unique design applied to a big line of products including brake pedals, brake arms and horns.

“In short,” Jerry adds, “the Ripper design was made for a simple, but cutting-edge custom look.” That’s only half the story behind this new and unique style. Like the rest of the Covington’s Customs line of bolton parts, each Ripper component requires a high degree of preparation to achieve the finished product. The result – builders and bike owners have a range of Covington’s Customs part numbers to choose from, each part finished in either chrome, powder coat or black anodize for a truly custom appearance. The Ripper line features footboards, shift pegs, shift arms and linkages, brake pedals and brake arms. The range also features parts such as matching derby covers, as well as horn and air cleaner covers. All of the parts are bolt-on ready so your customers will be up and riding with their new custom parts in no time. “All of the bolt-on Ripper parts use stock mounting hardware for adapting to the bike,” Kathleen says. “If the OE hardware won’t fit, we supply those part numbers with included fasteners for mounting the part to the bike itself.” ■
