In times of turmoil and distrust on the campuses of the world, when relations between students and faculty must be coordinated to exactness, we find ourselves looking to one to improve these relations, to represent the faculty in all respects while listening and acting upon the demands of the student body. We, at Pepperell, feel fortunate to have such a person leading us in this way. His character, leadership, and unique personality have led to the growth, progress, and well-being of our High School.

We dedicate the 1970 DRAGON to one who represents Pepperell School in its entirety, students and teachers alike; one who stands by his opinions, but never neglects the feelings of others.

The Pepperell High School Marching Dragon Band, under the direction of Mr. Bill Lane, had a very successful 1969-1970 season, beginning with enjoyable music and precision drills for half-time entertainment at football games. The Concert Band presented several concerts, both live and taped for radio broadcasts. During the spring, the band participated in the Seventh District Band Festival, and practically all members entered the competition at the Solo and Ensemble Festival. The band greatly appreciated the generous donation of $500.00 by the J. P. Roberts and Sons nstruction Company for the purchase of chimes.

The lnterclub Council is composed of the presidents of all the organizations at Pepperell. The lnterclub Council helps coordinate club activities and regulate school functions. The lnterclub Council is a small yet very influential organization, especially in school governmental affairs.

Choral music returned to Pepperell after an absence of several years. This renaissance was the result of the interest and efforts of our choral director, Miss Joan Hughes.

The chorus meets 6th period each day, but rehearsals often take place in the afternoon and at night to produce the excellent sound for which the chorus is gaining a reputation .

Pepperell High School 's student body is represented by their elected government known as the Student Council. Composed of each homeroom 's two representatives and the elected officers, the Student Council acts as an intermediary between the student body and the administration.

The Student Council not only works actively in school-centered projects, but also strives to improve the community as a whole. Several annual projects are undertaken such as the Homecoming, a clean-up campaign, and more recently, the sponsorship of an orphan child. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Kay Sitz, the Student Council looks forward to a prosperous future.

Under the new leadership of Mrs. Good, the French Club strives to learn more about the country and language of France. The monthly meetings are enhanced by lively programs on French customs. The French Club is involved in several creative projects and in planning a banquet at the end of the year.

The Pepperell Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America plays an important part in many of the student activities. Being tagged as one of the most active clubs, this organization works hard to prove worthy of this recognition. Under the helpful supervision of Mrs. Ruth Glover and Mrs. Louis Miller, The FHA has completed many school and community projects.

Some of these projects include: table decorations for the lunchroom, dressing dolls for the Salvation Army, sponsoring the annual FHA-FFA Sweetheart Dance, visiting various rest homes and rehabilitation centers, and many other worthwhile projects.

FHA is mainly composed of girls, but boys in Family Living classes are considered associate members.

The club, working with Home Economics, strives to help young girls become better acquainted with homemaking and its responsibilities also it informs persons on new and better techniques of homemaking.

Meeting with Coach Wayne Huntley in the morning hours before school , the Christian Athletes share a time of thoughts, songs, and prayers. They stress Christian ideas and attitudes among the athletes and students both on and off the playing field, promoting good sportsmanship and a ready acceptance of responsibility. Not only are they witnesses for Christ in the school, but many are asked to speak to church groups. The inspiration that this organization gives its members makes these athletes even more influential as they live their lives as Christians.

Pepperell has had and does have many great educators and we have been fortunate to share some of their knowledge. It would be hard to give these people a definition, but we find it easy to give an example, Mr. William Franklin Burk.

Mr. Burk was born on August 21, 1908, and is a native of Floyd County. He received his secondary education at Rome High.

He is married to Mrs. Bessie Burk. They have four children : two boys and two girls.

Mr. Burk attended Brewton-Parker Junior College, and Mercer University. He received his B.S. in 1950 at the University.

His past experiences include 13 years as a principal of several Floyd County Public Schools and 25 years as a teacher of Distributive Education .

Mr. Burk belongs to many worthwhile professional and service organizations some of which are: Georgia Educational Association , National Educational Association, Floyd County Teachers Educational Association, Georgia Vocational Association, Distributive Education Association, National Association of Distributive Education Teachers, and a life member of American Vocational Association .

Also, Mr. Burk is active in the Farm Bureau and Community Improvement, and is a Ruritan Club Member.

As you see from the previous list, Mr. Burk is a very outstanding man especially in the heart of Peppe rell students. It is a pleasure this year to try to show in printed words how much Mr. Burk means to us and our school.

The D. E. Club is made of students enrolled in Distributive Education . Distributive Education is a program which provides students instruction in selling, economics, and business practices.

Pepperell 's D. E. Chapter is well known throughout the state. Mr. Burk, the capable leader of the D. E. Club, has led its members well this past year as in the previous years. Many regional and state officers have been produced by our D. E. Club.

The members of the Library Club are a group of dedicated girls who spend one period a day assisting students in library work . This year they had the extra task of helping the students get acquainted with the facilities of our beautiful new library. We must commend them on their enthusiastic efforts to make our library one which we can be proud of.

The club is under the capable leadership of Miss Sara Hightower and Mrs. Julia Terry. Special recognition must 90 to Miss Hightower who was awarded the first annual Nix-Jones Award, naming her " Librarian of the Year" in Georgia, this year.

The Christian Council is designed to develope and promote Christian fellowship among the students of Pepperell High School. With Mrs. Bennett as advisor, the club serves as an inspirational guide in the daily lives of each student as well as working to help the community. The largest club at Pepperell, the Christian Council sponsors the annual Christmas program for the school.

One of the largest organizations at Pepperell is the school 's chapter of Future Teachers of America .

Under the direction of Mrs. Mildred Moore and Mr. Bruce Whipple, this organization helps members learn some of the duties of a teacher. Pepperell 's F.T.A. participates in local, regional, and statewide activities. Pepperell's chapter has produced statewide officers and our chapter is very influential in the organization . The F.T.A. also does a service to the school by members volunteering to be teacher's aids.

The scientists of America work under the National Science Foundation, and the scientifically minded students of Pepperell are working under the Pepperell High School Science Club. This organization is designed to offer students with a genuine interest in science the opportunity to gather as a group and work to promote scientific interest at Pepperell. Under the direction of Mrs. Sandra Cooper, the Science Club is improving with the times, sponsoring a better Science Fair, and contributing more to the purchase of science equipment.

Being inducted into the Lydia D. Sheppard Chapter of the National Honor Society is an honor experienced by only a few choice juniors and seniors. The members have shown themselves outstanding in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship.

The Senior Honor Society sponsors several projects throughout the year. This year the club made and sold jinx dolls for football games. One of the highlights of the year is the annual Miss Pepperell contest held each year.

The Letter Club is blessed with only those persons who are outstanding in their field. Athletes having character and determination in school work along with successful effort in their play are chosen. The initiation then follows if these qualities are found in the person. This organization under the supreme leadership of Mr. Bill Wood is for the betterment and encouragement of athletes to leadership in school activities.

The Annual Staff has put forth much time and effort to make the '70 Dragon the " Best." Working around the clock, the Staff tries to capture for the students what they feel are highlights of the year.

This year's book is bigger and better! It contains ALL sports, and many events that have been left out in previous years. Attributing to our success has been the use of an afternoon work-period.

The advisor is Mr. Bruce Whipple, whose patience, interest and understanding in the students are shown throughout the book.

The Dragons enjoyed its best season under coach Wayne Huntley. In compiling its season record 22-2, the Dragons also won the Holiday Festival Basketball Tournament. Dedication and sacrifice shown by the players along with the superior leadership of Coach Huntley proved to be a winning combination . While on the court the boys exemplify character and sportsmanship.
