1964 The Dragon Yearbook

'64 DRAGON PEPPERaL J-11~ GCUOOL Pepperell High School library ~JOfo

To start off this year's annual the Dragon Staff chose this picture. It shows Sta,r-Student of Pepperell and Floyd County, Joe Boggs; his Star-Teacher, Mrs. Shepherd; along with Mr. Byrd admiring the certificate of accreditation presented to Pepperell School by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

We finally achieved our goal of being accredited by this association. This means a lot to our students who are about to enter colleges or other schools and is a great honor to our school.

We chose Mr. Byrd to be in the picture because he deserves recognition for all the hard work and extra responsibilities placed upon him by Mr. Sutton's recent illness.

We chose Joe and Mrs. Shepherd to appear in the picture because for the fourth year in five Pepperell has had the county Star Student. Joe is the second person in his family to receive this award.

Well, this is to show you what a great school we have. In the following pages we have tried to record the most important and treasured events of the past year. So now we, the Annual Staff, give you . ..

"

May 29, 1917-November 22, 1963

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country "

JFK left us these words. He not only preached this slogan, but also practiced the meaning of the words. We did not always agree with this man, nor did we always praise him; but we must in all truthfulness admit that he was a martyr to the cause of America and to his wise, just judgment in affairs concerning our country. He was a man among men, a leader among leaders, and an American among Americans.

ro~ COUNTR¥ AND COMfv{LJNnY

Mr Harvey was an excellent example of the slogan President Kennedy left behind He was one of Lindale's most loved men . His parting from us was a sad affair, but he will always be in our hearts

Mr. E. R. Moulton best summed up Lindale and Pepperell's feelings fer Mr Harvey

" We honor the memory of one whose character and devotion to his employees and to our School was unquestioned "

MISS ELIZABETH STRANGE

Since the establishment of Pepperell High School she has been the chief advisor of all the annual staffs. However, this year ill-health has forced her to yield her position to another. We are all deeply grateful to her for many years of faithful service to us, the students of Pepperell High School. She has set a difficult example for anyone to follow. Her traits of cheerfulness, faithfulness, and co-operation will forever be remembered.

It is another first at Pepperell High School. This year the annual staff's decision to dedicate the annual to two people who have put much work and effort into the creation of the treasured memories at Pepperell. To preserve the element of surprise these two who work in secrecy have for many years gone without the recognition they truly deserve.

Therefore, the 1964 Dragon Staff wishes to recognize and dedicate this annual to our beloved advisors,

MRS. W H BOLING

The successor in whom we have placed our faith has shown wisdom, tactfulness, and capability in carrying out her tremendous new tasks. Her willingness and her honest sincerity has left in us a feeling of admiration.

Hey,

Pepperell gained revenge over Model as they nipped the Blue Devils in a 13-6 thriller at Barron Stadium, before 6,000 fans who had gathered to witness 16th annual Shrine Football Classic.

Last year Model took the affair with a four-touchdown margin-but, this year the Dragons were not to be denied.

Dragons counted the only touchdown in the hard fought first half. J. Mathis slammed three yards over the twin stripes for the tally.

Rest of the first two periods were played mostly between the 30-yard stripes with neither team threatening.

In the fourth quarter, determined Dragons put together longest march of the night-73 yards covered in 13 plays. The, payoff was a 6-yard pass Mathis to End M Gaines in the end zone. Mathis slammed over for PAT to make it 13-6 the final count

Model's only TD came in the third quarter

Pepperell outdistanced Model in first downs, 11-5, and also on ground 115 yards to 68

Pepperell has won three times in four outings this season, while the Blue Devils show a 1-2 record.

Pepperell Dragons, fired-up for its intra-regio n battle with Dallas, swam"ped the Tigers with a de v astating attack for a 32-8 victory before a large homecoming gathering

Dragons snapped a Floyd County "homecoming jinx" that had prevailed for other teams in the area Coach Otis Gilbreath's troops were never in da n ger of losing the contest as they jumped into lea d during opening minutes of the game .

Dallas could do no right during first half as Dragon's offensive machine worked with clock like precision.

During past few weeks Floyd County Schools observing homecoming' have suffered defeats, but fate held a better finish for the Dragons.

Dragons scored 13 points in second and th ird periods and then capped the show with a six pointer in final quarter

Dragons marched 25 yards for second touchdown With J. Brumbelow going the final 8 yards. Mathi s' PAT attempt fel! short 59-yard drive in second pe· riod was climaxed when Mathis found Brumbelow in open for 25-yard TD pass Mathis and Brumbelow were top guns for the night

How much more do I owe yoy?

We were very proud to be selected this year for the county Sportsmanship Award. Our school was chosen above all others in Floyd County. This award is given on the basis of the all-round congeniality and true sportsmanship of the teams, fans, coaches, and students from the school. You must be humble in victory and gallant in defeat. This award is a tribute to the "never say die" Dragons.

DRAGON

Well! We finally made it! After three long years of work our school finally has a sign. This sign now denotes the road leading to the school as "Dragon Drive."

The Student Council concocted the idea for the sign and laid plans for its construction. All the school clubs contributed work, time, suggestions, or money The Student Council, F F.A., F H A., F B.L.A., D E , Honor Society, Letter Club, Spanish Club, Christian Council, Library Club, and F.T.A. all put their fingers in the makings of our sign.

The sign was finally completed and presented to Mr. Moulton, who plans to make arrangements to have the sign lighted at night.

The entire school and everyone who participated in the sign's construction can be proud of the beautiful, lasting monument they have left to Pepperell High

As the year draws to a close, we look back with pleasure upon the events that have filled our cup of memories to overflowing. We have attempted to capture the best and most outstanding of these memories between the covers of the 1964 DRAGON.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have advisors as capable as Mrs. Johnnie Boling and Miss Elizabeth Strange to help us over the rough spots; and we cannot adequately express our thanks to our photographer, Mr. S. H. Williams, whose patience and co-operation with the annual staff were truly astonishing and always appreciated

We hope that we have succeeded in our endeavor to present a good annual to you, the students of Pepperell High. With the sincere wish that each of you will find among these pages something special something you will remember for a long, long time we give you the 1964 DRAGON. STAFF
