The WAVE

As the goal of the project was to reform the ditch made by unconstructed freeway 710 site in Pasadena, the first aim was to connect both side of the city by putting connecting elements: curved landscape bridge piece over the ditch. On the one side of the ditch, tower was placed as the landmark of the city, and nine masses serving as public spaces were put on the other side under the landscape piece. Two strips of landscape part continues from the public space masses to the tower, connecting two sides as a wavy building. Tower is another form of the wave on the side which is going on the vertical direction, while landscape building is wavy on horizontal direction. To emphasize and give context meanings to the ditch, where and how this project began, various sizes of support columns were put as a highlight part of the site and the support of the landscape buiding going over the ditch.

To design a reading room on Los Angeles State Historic Park, the first step was to get the chracteristics of two joints: Noan Tervajarvi joint and Kawai-tsugite joint, then mpodify the joints based on those chracteristics and use the chracters into the reading room design. For my reading room, I used modified Kawai-tsugite joint, with the character of versatile, for the main structure, and modified Noan Tervajarvi, with the chracter of compatible, for the supplementary of the main form. I created a module with Kawai-tsugite joint, then made a box out of the module, making a pattern of the grid. By separating one fourth part of the whole box and moving the small box on the other corner of the main box, two different rooms are created. Small room is for group studying area and Big space is for individual studying area with bookstack. On the small exterior spaces made by those rooms, seating and stairs for users was placed purposfully for users to come to this structure and enjoy with the view of the park and nature. Each crown made with Noam Tervajarvi joints were place top of each individual and group study area to highlight the usage of each room as well as the whole strucure on the site.

From the reading room I designed in the previous project, aim was to add more spaces to make it into a library on the same site of Los Angeles State Historic Park. Unlike other library buildings, each room in my library is separated by circulation as individual spaces. Top Left circulations provide staris in all four ways to connect the ground to the second floor and bottom right circulation as providing entrance and path to first floor spaces. The building sits as a square with rooms layed out diagonally symmetried. The project also intend for me to develope my own field finishes and I used the materials that was used in the park for the exterior. Main facade of the walls is from the reading room pattern formed by wood joints. There are total 15 spaces throughout the first and second floor, with 9 on the first, and 6 spaces in the second floor. Staff offices are located at the center on both floors for easy access to every spaces in the building. Other purpose of the library is to provide exhibitions space for artists. Therefore I have used 3 spaces on the first floor, and one long space on the second floor which also provides circulation to users, to provide opened exhibition spaces.
