It might seem that everything went back to pre-pandemic status for good; unfortunately, the figures concerning number of infections are worrying.

With still valid sanitary restrictions, after months of stagnation, we were pleased to return to the domestic trade fairs - MSPO in Kielce and Trako in Gdańsk.

During the first event, we presented our offer for land forces and air forces. In Gdańsk, together with our German partner Konvekta, we promoted HVAC systems for railway vehicles. The interest in the trade fairs offer and the turnout showed that both events were eagerly awaited.

In recent months, we have also been working intensively with PIMOT. Our cooperation has resulted in the implementation of two interesting projects, which we cover extensively in this edition.

The 9th Technical and Repair Conference 3- 5 August "PKP INTERCITY" S.A.

FUTURE OF THE RAILWAY MARKET We have been a member of the Polish Chamber of Railway Equipment Producers and Railway Service Providers since spring 2019. Thus, we participate in conferences organised by the chamber several times a year. Consequently, we could not miss out on the opportunity to take part in the 9th Technical and Repair Conference „PKP INTERCITY” S.A. – which this year took place in picturesque Krynica Zdrój.

The issues covered at the conference concerned mainly the rolling stock projects, development plans, as well as cooperation with contractors. The meeting was attended by the Management Board of the largest Polish railway undertaking - PKP Intercity, representatives of the Rolling Stock Office (Biuro Taboru PKP Intercity S.A.), as well as Directors and Managers of individual Workshops: Central, North, South and West. The conference also gathered entrepreneurs from the railway sector and companies associated in the Polish Chamber of Railway Equipment Producers and Railway Service Providers.

Inauguration speech was made by Mr Adam Laskowski, Member of the Management Board, who presented already implemented investments and projects planned by the Company. Presented figures looked very promising. It is planned that PKP Intercity will have achieved 100% of a new and updated rolling stock by 2030.

We were very interested in the presentations made by representatives of the biggest Polish railway undertaking, with whom we have the pleasure to cooperate.

Locomotives used by PKP Intercity have been equipped with Konvekta KL 20 E air conditioning. This summer we carried out comprehensive training sessions (with lectures and practice) for Central, North, South and West PKP Intercity workshops.

The scope of training covered construction, operation, repair and maintenance of Konvekta KL20E air conditioning units, which are installed on new, updated and

retrofitted locomotives. However, our offer dedicated to the railway market in this area is much broader.

Selection of the appropriate air conditioning unit depends on the cabin size and the type of electrical supply. Our offer for railway vehicles also includes other solutions, among others USB chargers, which have been already proven on the market. For more information concerning our offer intended for the railway market, see page no. 16 18.

During an exhibition, which traditionally accompanied this meeting, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with a wide range of products for the railway sector.

29th International Defence Industry Exhibition MSPO in Kielce 7 - 9 September 2021

MSPO At the beginning of September, we were present at the International Defence Industry Exhibition in Kielce. Despite the pandemic, this year's trade fair experienced the real renaissance - just like in the old times.

Our trade fair offer included solutions dedicated to the aviation industry, as well as for the land military sector.

For the latter group, we promoted EnerSys lead-acid batteries from the military ARMASAFE Plus series.

A family of ARMASAFE Plus batteries uses a proven technology with thin, pure lead plates and with regulated valve ( EnerSys®Thin Plate Pure Lead). TPPL technology packs more power into the same space than a conventional battery, and also reduces corrosion and water loss due to the use of clean materials for its construction.

Application of TPPL technology (Thin Plate Pure Lead) results in extended storage and service life as well as increases the ability to survive and recover from abusive deep discharges. The inherent design of the VRLA Armasafe battery minimises gas evolution and eliminates the need to top up periodically with water.

The electrolyte is fully absorbed into the glass mat separators between the positive and negative plates, which means there is no free acid within the battery case; this gives increased flexibility in mounting position.

These batteries meet NATO standards and are used in the armies of: USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and Poland.

At the stands of over 400 companies from all over the world, the trade fair visitors could see the latest defence equipment for land and air forces. As we have been participating in MSPO for several years, we could not miss the event this time.

ARMASAFE PLUS ENGINES FOR MILITARY VEHICLES AT MSPO These batteries have been successfully used in a number of military vehicles operated by the Polish Army, as well as they are applicable to the new combat vehicles constructed for the army.

Some of them were presented at MSPO: A prototype of a technical assistance vehicle - ROSOMAK-WPT. This is a new, specialised vehicle providing technical security of operations in combat conditions for sub-units equipped

Military vehicles with ARMASAFE batteries

with KTO, manufactured by Rosomak in Siemianowice Śląskie. The vehicle was equipped with ARMASAFE 12FV120 batteries.

Such batteries are also used in the ROSOMAK KTO – Kołowy Transporter Opancerzony (armoured personnel carrier) with the ZSSW-30 HSW unmanned turret. The vehicle with a turret was tested this year and soon ordering of serial vehicles will be discussed. Trade fair visitors could see this ROSOMAK combat vehicle at the Huta Stalowa Wola stand.

The attention of visitors at this stand was also attracted by the KRAB (Crab) a 155 mm tracked gun-howitzer. This self-propelled tracked gun-howitzer was equipped with ARMASAFE batteries - UK6TNMF and 2 SBS30 types.

Presentation of vehicles with our batteries at this year's MSPO closes with a Leopard 2PL M1 battle tank, showed by Zakłady Mechaniczne „BUMAR-ŁABĘDY” S.A. The tank is equipped with ARMASAFE Plus NBB248 batteries. In comparison to the “basic” Leopard 2PL, the new 2PL M1 version has been modified to include a few additional improvements, like introduction of an additional, external battery charging socket on the rear plate of the armoured hull.

included the FlexCluster and MVP multifunctional displays, which have been used in combat vehicles of our domestic manufacturers for many years now.

We have all the necessary tools for flexible configuration and our R&D department designs and develops software and creates visual representations of data, alerts and warnings according to rigorous requirements of the vehicle manufacturer, adapting and selecting the information needed on the modern battlefield.

This was also the case with the AH 20.44 off-road vehicle manufactured by AUTOBOX from Starachowice, where our engineers programmed and configured the FlexCluster according to the manufacturer's wishes and needs. We wrote more about this in our previous issue.

International Railway Fair 21-24 September

Together

at TRAKO Once again, we participated in the largest and most prestigious railway industry meeting in Poland and the second of this kind in Europe – TRAKO Fair in Gdańsk.

This time, we were present at the stand of KONVEKTA company - our long-term partner. Together we promoted Konvekta air-conditioning - ventilation - heating systems that meet the highest standards and requirements for the railway industry.

These units are distinguished by the low energy consumption and clever design providing high efficiency. Moreover, the use of environmentally friendly refrigerants guarantees safety for our atmosphere.

Talking about the construction, it is important to note that years of experience and examination of end-users' observations made these units very easy to service, as the access to the most important components is simple and convenient.

Konvekta solutions ensure adequate comfort i.e. heating-air-conditioningventilation for both the passenger compartment and the train driver's cabin.

According to the gathered data, a ther-mal comfort is what the train drivers value the most. They also appreciate quiet operation of Konvekta units, which is particularly important during long journeys.

Konvekta air-conditioning units are installed on trams, locomotives, diesel and electric multiple units, underground vehicles, special-purpose vehicles, handcars, etc. The HVAC series is mainly intended for the railway market and meets the necessary standards of the railway transport. We want to emphasize that Konvekta is a leading manufacturer of air conditioning (heat pumps), in which the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide CO₂ (R744) is used.

Offer in the field of air conditioning with CO₂ as refrigerant is very wide. It includes both the air-conditioning, such as HVAC 3705, HVAC 3706, HVAC 3709, HVAC 3710 dedicated to the train driver's/motorman's workplace and the air conditioning (heat pump) for passengers' compartments in trams and electric trains – HVAC 6706, HVAC 6708, HVAC 6709, HVAC 7702 HVAC 8704.

At this year's Trako, together with Konvekta we promoted a new and ecological heating and air conditioning system for local and long-distance railway transport – HVAC 6708. We can save significant amounts of electric energy by installing a heat pump on the railway vehicle. For more information , see page no. 18.

Manufacturers and users can also take advantage of electric heaters with the heating capacity ranging from 1 kW to 7 kW. These heating systems are used at the doors, in train driver's/motorman's cabins, in the passengers' compartments, in toilets, etc.

Konvekta also started production of roof air conditioning units that cool and heat the vehicle interior, blowing air only from above. It is a two-channel system - cold air is

directed through a central duct from the ceiling, whereas the heating - via side ducts is directed towards the vehicle floor for distribution there.

Of course, the offer still involves air conditioning units with R134a refrigerant that have been proven in many projects. An extensive range of air conditioning solutions enables to meet users' requirements and find the right solution for the particular railway vehicle. More than 1,000 Konvekta air conditioning units are already being successfully operated in trams and trains in Poland.

At this year's Trako, most of the presented vehicles was equipped with Konvekta air conditioning solutions. These include: Newag Griffin and Newag Dragon locomotives

Both locomotives were equipped with HVAC 3405 air conditioning (for train driver's cabin) and HZ422 electric heating and with CAN Open controller enabling control from the driver's display.

Pesa EMU Regio Jet The vehicle was fitted with the HVAC3407 air conditioner for train driver's cabin and the HVAC8404 air conditioning for passenger compartment that can be controlled via driver's train display.

FPS Locomotive SM42 (6D-FPS) The modernised locomotive has been equipped with the HVAC 2101 air conditioning for the train driver's cabin.

The KS30 air conditioning control was also installed.

We have been working with Drabpol for almost 30 years, and to put it briefly, the cooperation has been excellent.

X National Scientific Conference EKSPLOBALIS 2021 27-29 September

Focus on military equipment For the fourth time we participated in the 10 jubilee of National Scientific Conference known as EKSPLOBALIS. Traditionally, the main topic was "Development, operation and modernisation of military equipment - problems and solutions".

This year's conference was organized by the Military Institute of Armoured and Automotive Technology from Sulejówek and took place in Folwark Łochów (Łochów grange) - a conference and leisure centre.

The main objectives of the annual meeting are discussions on possibilities of reinforcing the effectiveness of the current exploitation system applicable for the military equipment (in the field of armoured and automotive technology) and promotion of new solutions in this field. The focal point here is search and promotion of optimal solutions in the field of development of armoured and automotive equipment, ballistic protection, equipment operation, storage, optimisation of legal regulations applied to conformity assessment of products. Therefore, in addition to plenary speeches, an important part of the conference was panel discussion and

thematic workshops, which foster the exchange of information, sharing of experience and knowledge .

For our company, the conference was also an excellent opportunity to get familiar with the current state of the armoured vehicles branch. Moreover, we took part in very interesting discussions and presented our solutions for this market, which have been successfully used in combat vehicles all over the world for many years. Such solutions include ARMASAFE Plus manufactured by Enersys - the only batteries in the world that were constructed using combined AGM and TPPL technologies. Their capabilities and reliability are proven by the fact that they are already used by more than 20 armies around the world and their number in military vehicles has already exceeded 2 mln.

We have already made the first, installation and operation tests of the new ProViu II. Works were performed on the Mercedes articulated bus that belongs to MPK Częstochowa fleet (public transport company).

The main aim of the test was to see how the ProViu II system works on an 18m articulated bus. Let us just remind, that the new ProViu®360 is a Surround View System equipped with 4 Megapixel HDR Cameras, which translates into enhanced image quality, especially under low light conditions. The image is delivered in genuine real time on the 10. 1” HD Touch-Display.

The device is smaller, and thus optimally integrated with the vehicle. The system allows the driver to view the vehicle from so far inaccessible observation points, most often using 4 cameras and an ECU, which effectively eliminate the problem of blind spot.

The system is intended for all kinds of commercial vehicles –- buses, coaches, public transport buses, construction and agricultural machinery, etc.

The first installation and functional test of ProViu II on an articulated bus in MPK Częstochowa was successful. Configuration of the entire system took place remotely, in cooperation with the manufacturer representatives –- Continental company. Day-long tests showed that the new ProViu is ideal for articulations, making it easier for the driver to drive safely and perform all manoeuvres.

The choice of Częstochowa public transport fleet was not random. MPK has been using our solutions for many years now. The buses of this public transport company are equipped with Dana/TM 4 electric

Together with ŁUKASIEWICZ - PIMOT for electromobility Last months have brought us two more projects with the ŁUKASIEWICZ - Automotive Industry Institute (pl. Łukasiewicz – Przemysłowy Instytut Motoryzacji) that is a part of Łukasiewicz Research Network (pl. Sieć Badawcza Łukasiewicz) - Europe's third biggest research organisation.

PAWO with DANA/TM4 electric motor

The first of projects is called “Autonomous Operational Support Platform” (pl. abbrev. PAWO). PAWO is an electric vehicle that is capable of remote-controlled or autonomous driving.

The platform was primarily designed for the uniformed services. It is a base vehicle ready to be fitted for specific tasks.

Results of the project are the basis for developing new technologies in the field of autonomous systems and unmanned platforms. In the next years, these areas may have a major impact on the national security and defence.

PAWO uses the first generation Motive DANA/TM4 powertrain system offered by our company. The system includes the HSM20 electric motor with a nominal power of 32 kW and a peak power of 40 kW and the CO150MV inverter. HSM20

electric motor alone weighs 27 kg and the inverter -another 12.2 kg. Thus, the entire powertrain system weighs approx. 40 kg. MOTIVE series of powertrain systems is powered by medium-voltage traction batteries. We have fitted this solution in accordance with the customer requirements. The full-vehicle integration itself was carried out by ŁUKASIEWICZ – Automotive Industry Institute Thanks to application of the electric powertrain, the operational support platform has

a low noise level, practically in any conditions. The range of the platform on a single charge is 105 km.

go. The route is determined by an autonomy algorithm and it is continuously modified depending on the detected obstacles.

The platform stops when the target is reached. In addition, thanks to installed sensors, it allows for accurate observation and analysis of the surrounding area.

PAWO project itself is carried out within the framework of a programme for young scientists towards national security and defence called "Future technology for defence - a competition for young scientists”. The competition received co-financing of the National Centre for Research and Development (pl. abbrev. NCRD) in the amount of almost PLN 4 million. The main objective of the project was to develop and build an autonomous system including an unmanned platform that enables navigation in an unknown terrain and performance of tasks, which depend on additional handling equipment.

The Autonomous Operational Support Platform with Dana/TM4 motor was presented at this year's MSPO trade fair in Kielce, on a joint stand of Łukasiewicz Research Network with an offer for the defence and security sector.

As we have already mentioned, the vehicle is capable of remote-controlled or autonomous driving. In the autonomous driving mode, the operator - by means of dedicated appdefines the destination point to which the platform intends to

Dana/ TM4 3-Phase inverter for the electric bus Auxiliary power supply in electric and hybrid vehicles In the second project, our task was to choose and deliver DANA/TM4 3-phase DC/AC inverter for an electric bus being developed by Łukasiewicz - PIMOT together with the bus manufacturer.

Electrification of commercial vehicles accelerated the transition from alternator-powered auxiliaries, to components that operate at higher voltages and fed directly from the EV's high-voltage traction battery using DC/AC or DC/DC inverters.

Construction of the DC/AC converter is based on construction and components of a 3-phase CO150 inverter.

The task of this inverter is generation of 3-phase AC with configurable amplitude and frequency supplied from a DC battery. This voltage source uses the latest automotive qualified technology of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) to provide the highest power and current density in this sector.

Built-in, advanced control algorithms for optimal use and performance of the power module make this compact system an ideal power source for AC-powered devices in electric and hybrid vehicles.

In these vehicles, inverters of this type are used to supply, among others: ! air conditioning ! compressors ! electric heating ! synchronous and asynchronous motors ! other subsystems requiring a 3-phase AC power supply.

In the project led by Łukasiewicz - PIMOT, the inverter will be used to supply (with the appropriate voltage) the air conditioning and the compressor of a pneumatic system. The Institute participates in works of a research group called “Intelligent and Pure Mobility” of the Łukasiewicz Research Network. In these frames it carries out works in the field of electromobility and environmentally friendly constructional solutions that, among others, are intended for the means of transport.

In September, we conducted such training for LOTOS Kolej from Gdańsk - one of the leading rail freight operators in Poland. LOTOS Kolej has Dragon and Griffin Newag locomotives in its fleet. These locomotives are equipped with HVAC 3405 air conditioning and HZ422 electric heating. The subject matter of the training for this customer was the construction, operation and maintenance of these units.

The training program also involved a discussion on methods for checking the operation of air conditionings using KS Diag diagnostic software. The documentation describes in detail how to carry out maintenance procedures to ensure long and reliable operation of these units. A transparent catalogue of spare parts allows for the quick selection of a right part.

The HVAC 3405 air conditioning was designed to the last detail and works well in all climate regions. Its compact design allows a quick installation. Air conditioning is equipped with a reusable metal air filter. The optimal airflow is achieved due to

Solutions for operating the e-TOLL system in our offer

A NUMBER OF BENEFITS with e-TOLL

As of this summer we have been offering devices for the e-TOLL system. e-TOLL is a new, electronic toll collection system for selected sections of motorways, expressways and national roads in Poland (over 3600 km). The system launched on 1 July 2021.

All vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 tonnes and buses are obliged to use the e-TOLL system. This new solution will replace the existing gate-based viaTOLL system.

You can buy and install e-TOLL devices in our service in Mykanów. They are also available in our online shop: (www.sklep.drabpol.pl).

The device price includes installation in our service centre! Our offer also includes a FREE subscription by the end of the year.

The offered locators are maintenance-free. Using these devices helps to avoid penalties resulting, for example, from dead batteries, smartphone failure or driver's lack of attention. The device calculates tolls only for the actually driven sections of the road and does not calculate for driving the parallel road or flyover. It also provides the real-time vehicle tracking and access to driving history.

e-TOLL solutions offer a number of benefits to drivers and fleet managers - including comfort of use, sense of security, and measurable savings. It is also possible to deduct up to 500 PLN net for each device in the form of a tax credit.

OUR SOLUTIONS for the railway transport Our participation and activity in the Polish Chamber of Railway Equipment Producers and Railway Service Providers is not coincidental. We have been presenting our extensive offer for the railway market for some years now, and many of the proposed solutions are used in railway vehicles – trams, locomotives, wagons and underground. It is important to note that systems from our offer have all necessary certificates for the railway market. They also meet the restrictive design and construction standards associated with the railway transport.

USB CHARGERS with full certification USB chargers for charging mobile devices enjoy unflagging popularity. The first such solution dedicated to trains was delivered to the Fast Urban Railway (abbrev. SKM) at the end of 2015. Dozens of these USB chargers were fitted on the Newag wagons used by the SKM. Now, our offer for railway transport includes new power ports charging in USB and USB-C standard, in the form of a plug-in charger or a modular power port. These solutions are fully certified in accordance with restrictive requirements of the railway market. There are also various

installation options covering handrails, headrests, vehicle walls, and locomotive dashboard.

The newest USB-A charger 5V/ 2.4A is available in black or grey.

The ports are protected against reverse polarity. The chargers are installed on a plug-in basis.

POWER PORTS with full certification Noteworthy are the modular power ports with USB charger and USB-C EZ3-USB. The new, applied here EZ3-USB concept enables the variable composition of a 230 V power port with different USB ports depending on the customer's needs. For example, we can use either one or two USB charging ports of A or C type, including their combinations. The power supply for the USB charging ports has a maximum output power of 25 watts for both USB ports. Design of the port allows for the easy replacement of a faulty charging USB port, without any interference with the 230 V / 50 Hz circuits of the port. USB ports are equipped with a light indicator flashing green or red. A free USB port is covered with a plastic cap. Over the years, Konvekta air conditioning units have become highly regarded in the railway transport. well as for the motorman's cabin in trams and train driver's/motorman's space in electric trains – HVAC 3710. In the latter case, heating power is introduced by the 3710 compact HVAC system into the vehicle via a separate air duct in the floor area.

The mode selection valve will select the air duct systems “cooling” or “heating”. In the air conditioning mode, cooled air is introduced into the vehicle from the roof. In the heating mode, the supplied, heated air is directed through channels to the floor surface. In both modes, recirculated air is drawn in through the ceiling.

Another group of systems with CO₂ refrigerant are air conditioning units for passengers' compartments in trams and electric trains. This group is represented by HVAC 6706, 6708, 6709, 7702 and 8704 units.

In this series, we want to bring closer to our Readers an energyefficient and environmentally-friendly HVAC 6708 system, which was promoted at TRAKO.

refrigerant (R744). The heat pump is the most intelligent and efficient heating technology in the railway transport – it absorbs the heat from environment. From a fraction of supplied energy, we obtain its multiple and thus a high level of thermal comfort. With the right system, the air that surrounds us is an unlimited energy source - the CO2 heat pump uses this very energy.

To achieve 100% efficiency, Konvekta CO₂ heat pump needs, depending on the ambient temperature, only 1/4 of the electrical energy. The remaining required energy is absorbed in a thermodynamic cycle by the heat pump free of charge from the environment. In this way, we save up to three quarters of the energy normally required in comparison with electric heating. This corresponds to a COP of 4, which means that for each kilowatt (kW) of electricity used, 4 kW of heat is created.

In the case of an air-conditioning system (R744 refrigerant) with a heat pump function for trams, in the second climate zone it is possible to save up to 28,000 kW/h/year per each air conditioning system of passenger compartment. This system works at any time of the year.

The CO₂ refrigerant offers many technical advantages CO₂ is an ideal alternative to chemical refrigerants and is not subjected to any legal restrictions.

CO₂ is an environmentally friendly refrigerant that is affordable and permitted in the long-term perspective. It is non-toxic and does not generate any decomposition products. Thanks to a higher efficiency (faster cooling/heating), the operating costs are further reduced.

CO₂ HVAC 6708 heat pump offers particularly low operating costs as it is stable and reliable, even at very high ambient temperatures in summer or at low temperatures in winter.

The HVAC series is completed by air conditioning units for passenger compartment and train driver's cabin intended for electric and diesel multiple units. These units use the traditional refrigerant – R134a.

CO₂ heat pump of HVAC 6708 series is a new and ecological heating and air conditioning system for local and long-distance railway transport. Thanks to the heat pump function and the alternative natural refrigerant – R744 (CO₂), the system uses significantly less energy compared to the traditional system with an electric heater.

As much as necessary – as economically as possible The management system of the HVAC 6708 CO2 heat pump is very well thought out; its performance is based on the cooperation between various system components. The main component of the system is a heat pump - using the CO₂

The Harris L3 systems are successfully used in combat, police and SAR aircraft. Some of them could be seen at this year's The PZL Świdnik – helicopter manufacturer belonging to the Italian concern Leonardo Helicopters, presented the new multi-role AW 139 W helicopter and the AWHero V/STOL UAV, dedicated to a wide range of tactical combat and maritime missions, humanitarian and environmental monitoring operations and infrastructure monitoring operations (e.g. monitoring of pipelines, power lines, remote facilities) .

Readying for 5G cabin connectivity

Hopefully, the COVID-19 calamity is mostly in our rear-view mirrors. While the year 2020 wasn’t kind to general and business aviation as a whole, there were a few bright spots.

One, in particular, was the sale of Gogo Inc.’s commercial aviation connectivity business to Intelsat S.A. for $400 million – a tidy sum in any year.

“I’d say the sale benefits us in three ways,” stated Sergio Aguirre, Gogo Business Aviation president. “Number one is we can refocus and concentrate on our business aviation customers and market and will be better able to stay in tune with our customers’ needs and be better positioned to deliver the new products and services they want. No more trying to provide umbrella solutions to both business and commercial markets.

“The second is it will strengthen our financial position tremendously. That puts us in a better position to go the long haul even if there’s continued pressure from COVID-19 or other unforeseen economic slowdowns. “Lastly, because we now have a renewed sole focus on business aviation and the revitalized funds, we’ll be able to continue with our development of product and service innovations like we had done so well in the past. We are committed to continuing to implement our great ideas and moving forward in the market.”

Gogo’s $400 million sale of its commercial aviation business to Intelsat has cleared the way for the air-to-ground connectivity leader to concentrate its efforts to provide exceptional services and solutions for its growing business and private aviation customer base. to-ground, analog voice network and it was quite innovative at the time. The downside was the company’s analog network was already being made obsolete by digital technology, which promised faster and more-reliable connectivity. “That’s right about when the original Iridium satellite business went bankrupt,” Aguirre said. “We saw an opportunity and approached the company about forming a partnership. AirCell became a valueadded manufacturer and reseller of Iridium equipment and services. We were able to convert the vast majority of our current AirCell customers to Iridium service. Of course, we offered them 100% credit on their installed AirCell equipment as an incentive.

“Overnight, AirCell became the largest Iridium reseller in business aviation, and I think we still hold that record today.

One of those new ideas he mentioned will be the company’s introduction of its new, highspeed, 5G network. More on that later.

Speaking of Gogo now being able to again do things like it had “done so well in the past,” let’s take a quick trip back in time to Gogo’s early days.

Back to the future As Aguirre explained it, Gogo started life some 27 years ago as AirCell, one of the first providers of affordable voice connectivity for the highend turboprops and light to mid-size cabin jet aircraft.

“Prior to AirCell, connectivity was very expensive and only available aboard heavy-iron aircraft,” he said. “We introduced the first air-

They never lost sight of the ground Aguirre said that even as the company continued building its Iridium satellite business, its founders continued to believe in and invest in their ground-based network.

“Our team continued to work with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to find and reallocate available

bandwidth,” he explained. “One spectrum of frequencies we were interested in had originally been allocated for those seat-back phones on airliners that nobody used. Over time, AirCell was able to buy all of the available frequencies.

“AirCell now owned those licensed frequencies, which meant we were the only ones who could use them. It was a game-changer. It was those frequencies and the airto-ground network that we took to the airlines for cabin connectivity. Prior to that, we had only worked in business aviation. But the capabilities offered by the new frequency spectrum enabled us to provide connectivity on the scale needed by airlines. That’s when AirCell split into two divisions serving both the airline

While the company was working on adding to its available licensed spectrum band, it was equally committed to shrinking the required line replaceable units and hardware. The thinking was, the smaller the LRU, the more aircraft you can put it on.

“Today, we have much-smaller hardware form factors and antenna options, so our systems can be installed across the entire spectrum of business aviation aircraft from turboprops up through large-cabin VVIP jets,” Aguirre said. “Also, the cost of our equipment is significantly less – orders of magnitude less – than the cost of a satellite-based connectivity system.”

Regarding costs, Aguirre said the installed price for a typical tail-mounted satellite system can be as much as $600,000. The monthly connectivity subscription rate is $12,000 to $18,000 a month, and that’s going to deliver in-cabin speeds of 5 to 15 Mbps. And, as you would expect, the higher speeds bring higher costs. Today, a typical Gogo AVANCE air-to-ground system will run between $60,000 to $130,000 plus installation, depending on the system and aircraft type. Connectivity subscriptions are available by the hour or on monthly plans, including an all-you-can-eat plan for $4,000 per month. As for speed, Aguirre said passengers are getting up to five times faster data speeds with AVANCE L5 than its original ATG systems delivered.

“We’re delivering enough bandwidth and speed to enable video streaming and video conferencing from the aircraft,” Aguirre said. “Of course, this is based on our current AVANCE L5 system – not our upcoming 5G network. When you put 5G on top of that, you’re going to see a dramatic increase in performance with faster speeds and greater bandwidth to the aircraft. “I think it’s important also to note that while streaming is available via the L5, Gogo offers a service that is more efficient than streaming content from the ground and one that delivers a host of content from the latest Hollywood

releases and top TV programming, as well as moving maps, 30 leading magazines in digital format and mor – it’s Gogo Vision.

“Customers want a seamless connectivity experience when they fly,” Aguirre explained. “Streaming video, quick online connections, instant email downloads – they want the same experience in the airplane they have on the ground. The passenger and in-flight performance reviews we receive about our current AVANCE products has been tremendous.

With the impact of COVID-19, we’re actually seeing that connectivity has become more important in business aviation.

Between our classic ATG systems and our newer AVANCE offerings, we currently have more than 5,700 active customers, and that continues to grow.”

In fact, Gogo ended 2020 with more subscribers online than it began the year: “A remarkable accomplishment,” according to Aguirre. “It shows how important in-flight connectivity is and shows the resilience of Gogo. “We expect most of those customers to transition to our new 5G connectivity solution when it becomes available. AVANCE is the name of the platform (software and services) we designed our L3 and L5 systems around. It was designed from the beginning to be connected to the internet at ever-increasing speeds. “Our current AVANCE L5 system is ready to be upgraded to Gogo 5G. Owner/operators will need to add the 5G box and connect it to the L5 hardware. All of the cabin wiring is local between the L5

and 5G box – it’s just an Ethernet connection, and all the system intelligence and controls are already built into the AVANCE software. The only other step is to swap out the antennas. It’s about as simple as an upgrade installation can be. “Traditionally, when something new comes out, you have to rip out the old LRUs and replace them. Not with Gogo. The AVANCE platform was designed to leverage new features and functions.

If you’re an AVANCE customer, the advantages of new updates are little more than a software upgrade away.” Of course, more speed isn’t the only thing Gogo Business Aviation’s new generation of connectivity solutions brings to an aircraft’s cabin and cockpit. Aguirre is extremely upbeat regarding the company’s new Gogo Dash connectivity toolkit app.

“Gogo Dash is our new app that gives pilots and maintainers insights into how the aircraft’s connectivity system is operating,” he said. “It can help diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues, manage connectivity preferences, and that’s just the beginning.”

Another recent enhancement to Gogo Business Aviation’s AVANCE system is the lowering of the system’s operational floor to 3,000 feet. “Traditionally, our in-flight connectivity services would not connect until the aircraft reached 10,000 feet above ground level. But we recently lowered that to 3,000 AGL. This is especially beneficial to operators of turboprops and light jets. That adds another 20 minutes of connectivity time to the typical trip, and that’s huge for the many operators who fly shorter trips and don’t reach 10,000 feet or are at that altitude for just a few minutes. “We were able to make that upgrade because of the flexibility of our AVANCE software

platform. It allowed us to implement that change automatically and required no interaction by the customer or changes to the aircraft – and it comes at no additional cost.”

Gogo goes all-in with its dealer network Aguirre said that while Gogo Business Aviation has achieved some significant milestones regarding product development and service delivery enhancements, it hasn’t done it alone.

“Over the past 18 months or so, we have been closely aligned with our dealer and customer council, which represents an array of customers and dealers,” he explained. “We have a long-standing policy of sharing ideas with them before we launch any products to the business aviation public.

“One of the things we have done with our dealers and MRO shops has been to sit down with them to find out how to make our equipment easier to install. How do we keep it from becoming a burden both from a cost and downtime standpoint? It’s expensive to keep a business airplane on the ground.” Case in point, Aguirre shared how Gogo Business Aviation’s dealers were instrumental in guiding the company’s engineers on how to design the new 5G antennas to fit in the same footprint as the current AVANCE L5 antennas. That will greatly simplify the installation of the Gogo 5G system.

“We’ve been working with our customers and dealers to make the transition to 5G as easy and simple as we can to save time and money for the customers and installers,” Aguirre said. “We have worked hard to leverage the experience and input from our experienced dealers, and it’s all been extremely valuable to helping us reach our goals.”

Universal Avionics' (UA) InSight integrated flight deck solution has been selected by Authorized Dealer Mid-Canada Mod Center (MC2) for a Falcon 50 NextGen upgrade. MC2 chose the InSight retrofit flight deck solution to modernize the aircraft with NextGen capabilities for FANS 1/A+ and Data Comm, and to replace the legacy CRT displays.

New Software for GI 275 Expected in August

EIS Enhancements & Standby ADI Restrictions Removed in v. 2.40

Garmin is pleased to announce an update to the GI 275 engine indication system (EIS) that includes enhanced display layouts that optimize display space and show more engine data on a single page, ultimately helping pilots quickly view essential engine, fuel and electrical data. In addition, improved graphical information and gauges are used to help pilots dynamically visualize sensor data and accurately assess the aircraft's engine performance.

As an alternative to the dual-concentric knob, the intuitive touchscreen user interface now features page shortcuts that allow the pilot to switch pages with just a single touch of the display. Other enhancements include a new Flight Summary Page, Engine Percent Power display, EIS page shortcuts, user customizable EIS fields and more.

Improved EIS page layouts and capabilities A new bar graph on the main EIS page displays EGT and CHT for individual cylinders. For quicker and easier interpretation of engine data, font sizes of select EIS values have been increased. In addition, a new combined EGT/CHT page brings these indications into a single page for simplified monitoring, plus Normalized Mode, which allows users to easily monitor engine temperature fluctuations while in cruise mode, and turbine inlet temperature (TIT) lean

functionality for appropriately equipped aircraft. Additional new features include improved fuel tank bar gauges and the ability to display Engine Percent Power at the top of the screen. Please note that engine percent power cannot be displayed in Cirrus aircraft.

EIS Page Shortcuts and Customizable Fields Shortcuts have been added with increased touch functionality to enable pilots to quickly access more detail with regard to specific EIS data. With a single touch of the EGT/CHT indications on the main page, the GI 275 EIS quickly switches to the dedicated EGT/CHT page. To more easily access fuel calculations, pilots can touch the fuel gauge from the main page to switch to the fuel computer page. In addition, pilots can touch the RPM area on any page to return to the main page. Pilots also have the ability to customize the AUX page EIS fields relevant to their flight with user selectable buttons access via the touch screen.

Wireless EIS Data Logging and Streaming Pilots can stream and view EIS data in real-time on the Garmin Pilot™ App, with the data later uploaded automatically to flyGarmin.com for storage and further review. This seamless integration allows owners and operators to get the most out of their aircraft and engine investment by easily reviewing real-time and historical engine data performance at any time.

Additional Updates: Changes to ADI Restrictions and More In addition to the large number of upgrades to the EIS functionality, the popular customer request for GI 275 to be used as an MFD when integrated with a TXi (software version 3.30 or later) and GFC 500 is now available. Previously

required to be locked as an ADI only when installed as a standby when a GFC 500 is present, with software version 2.40 customers can take advantage of a full array of MFD features on the GI 275 with a TXi, GFC 500, and standby GI 275 installation.

The GTP 59 can now be interfaced with the GEA 24 when installed with EIS only units (010-02325-10) to provide Outside Air Temperature information on the EIS display.

These new GI 275 EIS improvements are expected to be available via software version 2.40, available in August for Aircraft that can use FAA approvals.

Garmin Announces New GSB™ 15 Models Now Includes Type-C Charging Capabilities Garmin is pleased to introduce two new models of the GSB 15, our powerful USB charger designed for a wide range of aircraft installations. The GSB 15 is now available with 27W of USB Type-C charging ports, while maintaining the same compact and lightweight design. The new GSB 15 models contain two USB ports that support up to 27W per port of power output simulta-neously, allowing pilots and passengers to charge most mobile devices while they are using them. Other enhancements include new dimmable halo lighting around each port, new USB Power Delivery (PD) te-chnology, and much more.

The new models of the GSB 15 are offered with either dual USB Type-C ports or a combination of USB Type-A and USB Type-C ports. Both of these new models include two powerful 27W USB charging ports that can provide enough power to charge most later generation mobile devices during use in the cockpit and throughout the cabin. Another new and exciting feature is the USB PD technology that enables the GSB 15 to provide optimal power output for a specific device. In addition, the halo lighting around the exterior of the USB ports is now dimmable, which allows pilots and passengers to

connect to the GSB 15 easily during nighttime conditions but utilize the lighting bus to control brightness for optimal viewing. The GSB 15 also provides owners and operators with short circuit and over temperature protection.

The GSB 15 is compact enough to fit a 1-inch cutout and uses a slim design to make it suitable for installation in any cockpit.

Installation of GSB 15 can be simplified as the GSB 15 can take the place of an existing aircraft instrument hole with an optional adapter plate. The new GSB 15 models utilize the same connector as the existing dual Type-A version, allowing for an easier upgrade path to the new models. Consideration must be taken for installation in a 14v aircraft however, as this setup may require a wiring or breaker change. Reference the installation manual for more details.

With an upcoming GI 275 STC update, the new models of the GSB 15 will offer pilots the option to transfer databases to the GI 275 electronic flight instrument using a USB flash drive. In addition, owners and operators with a GI 275 and GSB 15 will be able to record flight data, including valuable Engine Indication System (EIS) data, and upload this information to a USB flash drive for an in-depth analysis.
