Living Life to the Fullest Marjorie M. Middleton “I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8 (NIV).

I am thankful everyday for the counsel and love of the Lord, without Him my own wisdom is not sufficient. I realize that in every season, every experience in life, I exist to learn, and, therefore, I strive to be an open vessel. I want the Lord to pour into my life! One joyful step, one painful or disappointing step at a time, leads me to the next victory and the life Christ mapped out for me before I was even born.

I came from a two-parent home and knew no one who’d divorced. I came from a very financially stable home and knew nothing about struggling.

But, God always has a set up for a comeback for all of His children! During that period, I learned to trust in God more than I ever had before and I am a witness to His miracles. I found a good job and could care for my children, I became a leader in my church, my community and the county I live in.

During times of growth, I can draw on the past, present God allowed me to witness to others the goodness and, even, future trials and joys, confidently, as my He has for each of us. There is a plan for my life, wisdom born from experience blooms. Every instance is my children’s lives and yours. We just need to now a lesson. My thoughts about those lessons will listen for His voice and comply. Inspire yourself, eventually become prayers, habits and a way of life. I have inspire others! learned to, daily, depend only upon God for direction, learned (through trial and error) to put my trust in His capable hands.

When my children were very young I went through a separation in my marriage that eventually led to divorce. It was one of the most challenging times in my life. I was financially destitute and emotionally broken, but God had a healing journey in mind. There were so many things that I was not prepared for, but God was.

Inspirational Moments During these times with Covid-19; political and racial unrest; and police brutality cases, many of us are feeling unbalanced, unsure and afraid. These feelings are natural, but we must remember tough times exist no matter what and we can make it. We have the tools.

In the last few issues of V&P Lifestyle Magazine, other authors have focused on self-care during difficult times.

It is key to longevity and mental stability. A brief recap: Engage in meditation and prayer Rest Eat healthy/well Exercise/take care of you, so you can care for others There is another plan I would like to present. This works for me. My hope is that it inspires somebody! In this life, we must have a plan for success, which includes a battle-ready strategy.

Listen for God’s voice, in everything I don’t ever want the “wisdom of the world” to become the internal voice that guides me. I will be still and listen for the voice of the Savior as I ask myself, “What have my life and experiences taught me so far?” “What will it take to overcome the obstacles I have in my life at this moment?” – then, I will turn and call on God for direction, wisdom and guidance. I have determined that the common denominator for success is God. There is no difference between living and learning. It is impossible, misleading and harmful to think of them as being separate. I trust Him. Have a fight plan At some point, there will be a war in your life. Be prepared. The first step in preparation for a war is knowing that “all things work together for good.” Even when you feel there is no way out, there is. During this time, study and know your enemy. If disease is your enemy, know everything you need to know about it, including cures or reliefs. Do not be afraid; use His presence and your past battles as a weapon.

Have an exit plan Stand firm in your decision to listen for God’s voice, rely on your experiences and move forward. Come up with a plan and stick to it!

Sometimes we waste time being unsure. Have faith in God and the abilities He has given you.

Stick to what you are going to do and remember that your words are predestined to change your life. If you say it is so and have confirmed it with the Lord, stand firm on your word!

As a leader in my community I was blessed to do many things. If you trust God He will make a way out of your no-ways! I was able to bless people with the word of God in my neighborhood; lead a church outreach that freed another community of an open-air drug market; and, become a Manager of a family shelter. God will use you to bless others with the wisdom you have gained from the experiences you’ve been through. Take God at His word and know that nothing is impossible if He is involved.

Isn’t it amazing how much we can do if we trust the Lord and ourselves? There is always something to do and we can be available for the tasks! Everywhere we look there’s work to be done. Here are a few things we can do while we have some time away from the usual rush, rush, rush (COVID has given us some extra time!): Set up some Zoom game times with family/neighbors Visit some other churches virtually Read Send gift cards to families in need During this season we are certainly maturing.

Maturity is the ability to respond to the environment in an appropriate manner.

The Importance of Early Childhood Education

Research has shown that children enrolled in high-quality preschool and Head Start programs are more prepared for school and are less likely to be identified as having special needs than children who did not attend an early childhood program.

According to a review of research released

by Learning Policy Institute (LPI) it was found that children who attend early learning programs are more prepared for school and experience substantial learning gains in comparison to children who do not attend early learning programs.

Quality is an essential component of the success that children experience. Multiple domains of development must be addressed: academic, physical, and social emotional... The whole child.

I had an opportunity to take a closer look at an early learning center, The Ultimate Development and Learning Center, located in White Plains, MD. I was able to experience all that the center offers for our youngest learners.

One of the key factors in an effective learning environment is high-quality teaching. That is exactly what I was able to glean from owner and CEO of UDLC. Mrs. Dorothea F. Frazier.

An Interview with Dorothea Frasier SHP: Please tell our readers about the Ultimate Development & Learning Center (UDLC)?

SHP: You are a former early childhood teacher.

How has that prior experience impacted your vision for UDLC?

DF: I am the proud Owner and CEO of The Ultimate Development and Learning Center, LLC (UDLC). The Ultimate Development Learning Center is a place where a safe, clean, healthy and loving environment is provided for children to receive that one-onone care that they so desperately need in this fast-paced world. I believe that children are a unique and valuable treasure in our society.

My vision is that each child is accepted as a very unique individual. I provide children with many enriching opportunities, with the core focus on development in the areas of social, educational, physical and emotional enrichment.

DF: As a former early childhood teacher, I feel there are many types of learning opportunities that encourage a child to learn and help to enhance their abilities, cognitive and motor skills. I feel that my prior experience has greatly impacted my vision and my learning centers are a great way to encourage a child to learn, and be ready for the school atmosphere.

In partnership with their parents, this multifaceted approach is a continuation of a unique network that continues outside of my care. I strive to provide the families with the highest quality of years of experience; maintaining all of the standards, which provide the framework for me to implement a higher quality learning center..

SHP: From your experience, why is early childhood education so important?

DF: Early childhood education is so important because it encourages and develops language skill and ability to acquire vocabulary.

Throughout playtime and education, children learn social skills along with how to deal with others and develop their own values. With a successful childcare and early education plan, it brings a positive outcome to a child’s life.

What a child learns in their early years are things that will continue to help them along their educational and career path.

The environment at UDLC enhances a child’s learning by providing them with not only the educational portion but the complete nutrition, educational field trips, and special events to provide them with a fully-rounded experience that they need as children. Children can begin their learning experience in pre-kindergarten and in kindergarten, which in my view, are the first grades of elementary education.

SHP: What advice would you give to parents with young children as they prepare to provide a solid education for their child?

DF: My advice to parents with young children as they prepare to provide a solid education for their child is: Parent involvement is one way to prepare for a solid education. Children do better when parents are involved in their academic lives.

Stay involved by asking questions and talking to your child’s teacher with a quick email or a conference.

Send your child ready to learn. A nutritious breakfast provides the energy that will stimulate the children and prepare them for their day. Children who eat breakfast have more energy and do better in school.

Take attendance seriously Demonstrate a positive attitude about education to your children.

Education Is Key SHP: What is special about UDLC? DF: The quality of care that is given to each of my scholars is first class. My unique curriculum and hands-on educational environment, in my view, are the best above the rest. Not only the educational side of UDLC, I also prepare top of the line meals daily, even special meals for scholars that are vegan. The experience here at UDLC will remain with my scholars as it did for many of my students I taught years ago.

SHP: I had the pleasure of attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony for UDLC. What lesson have you learned from the time you opened your doors for the first time until now?

DF: I am not too sure if this is a lesson or a learning experience; however, I wished that I would have followed my dreams earlier because of all the joy that I am now receiving. It does not seem like work but more like a rewarding experience. If you are doing something you love and it’s your passion...it is not a job or work.

SHP: What's next for UDLC? DF: Next, for UDLC is to purchase a large building so that I can address my extensive waiting list. I want all the scholars that are on my waiting list to have the UDLC experience. I will eventually open a school from age six months to fifth grade.

Dorothea Fitchett Frazier, founder, owner and CEO of The Ultimate Development and Learning Center, LLC (UDLC) was the youngest daughter of Geraldine Fitchett and the late James Fitchett.

Being the youngest daughter out of eight children (four girls and four boys) presented a clear and precise indication of her nurturing nature. Ms. Frazier is a product of the Hampton Roads School System, where she attended Bethel High School in Hampton Virginia. Upon graduation from high school, she was accepted and graduated from Norfolk State University where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Child Care and Family Studies. Her thirst for knowledge continued as she went on to receive a Master of Education degree from NationalLouis University in Curriculum and Instruction.

In 1985, Ms. Frazier relocated to Washington, DC where she was gainfully employed for a year at the Assumption Catholic School in the southeast quadrant of the city. She also worked for the District of Columbia Public School (DCPS) system for 10 years. Continuously striving to attain higher goals, Ms. Frazier began working for Prince George's County Public School (PGCPS) system. During her tenure with PGCPS, she held several positions in addition to teaching; chairperson for her teaching team and the social committee.

Looking for more opportunities to give back to her community, she contributed her spare time to working with the school improvement committee. In June 2019, after 35 years of public school service, she retired from Prince George's County Public School system. Seeing the need in her community to help with our future generation, she decided to follow her 20-year dream, leading her to become the proud Owner and CEO of The Ultimate Development and Learning Center, LLC (UDLC).

The V&P Holiday Season Business Report

By Karen McConnell-Jones As we are approaching this holiday season, while taking a look at our economy post COVID-19, we have found ourselves in a unique situation during this time.

The economy is still experiencing high job losses, as some businesses are preparing or have already closed their doors for good; the speculation is already building as to how the upcoming holiday season will look.

It has been reported that holiday travel will be at an all-time low this year. In fact, the traditional holiday celebrations that we are used to having in this season, such as big family gatherings, office parties, private restaurant parties or any other large group gatherings will be affected due to COVID, leaving most merchants concerned with the effects that the pandemic will have on the economy during this holiday season. There are hopes that the money not spent on traveling, office parties, big restaurant bills and tips will lead to more retail shopping.

The estimation is that retail shopping, especially online, will be exceptionally high as Americans are getting a jump on early shopping to avoid last minute difficulties, along with, last minute higher priced delivery and shipping fees. Of course, Amazon is among the leading online platforms to shop during this holiday season. It also has been reported that since safety is a high priority for the consumers because of COVID, stores will need to be on top of their safety precaution game to draw shoppers inside.

Curbside service and mobile usage will be at a high volume, as many shoppers are avoiding stores due to safety concerns.

The need for charitable organizations to receive donations is in demand for the holidays, as well. We are seeing the struggle for area food banks and other outreach organizations to remain plentifully stocked due to the pandemic and its severe hit on the economy.

A FAILURE TO EMPOWER

We are all looking for ways of being financially viable.

If you have found yourself unemployed due to the pandemic, seek out employers, no matter the business sector, that are essential. I am not saying for you to not start your own business. But if a stable flow of income is weighing heavily on your mind, allow the pandemic to enlighten you. Which businesses were able and are still thriving during these unprecedented times? Do your homework. Research the businesses you are targeting.

After all, to strive to have your own business and still receive a guaranteed paycheck… Well, what else is there to say?

I would like to share a more personal experience that I find myself learning to adjust to, as we all are having to adjust in some form or fashion. I am an entrepreneur who does appreciate having the skill set to provide a service to the public while being employed, earning a bi-weekly income. This article shares the highs and lows of working for a big-box store.

Lowe’s Home Improvements earlier humble beginnings (1946) involved bringing needed goods to the local communities, as witnessed by my beloved relative, Ernest Johnson, who is no longer with us. Ernest shared with me that when he was growing up he recalled seeing Mr. Lowe coming into the neighborhoods in a station wagon with goods for sale. Ernest’s vivid recounting of this childhood memory left me envisioning Mr. Lowe coming through those neighborhoods. During my tenure with Lowe’s, which has been more than 11 years this second time around, I have found myself having a deep affinity for assuring that customers are getting quality merchandise and the best customer service where they are spending their hard earned income. With all the changes that have taken place at Lowe’s and the evolving stages of growth that the company and its employees have experienced, it has been, and is, a true testimony of strength and endurance for all.

Because retail is a very demanding industry for all who are employed in this sector, the strains on personal lives require each of us to often plan out every detail with great thought. How do we balance a job that does not close its doors but twice in a year with our personal lives? To add more challenges to our plates, the executive leadership has devised a new scheduling system that will allow the focus on customer service by providing maximum coverage for high traffic customer flow seven days a week. The scheduling leaves the retail staff with more single days off within a month in lieu of having consecutive days off within a month. Weekends off are scheduled every eight weeks. This, and no doubt other reasons, has contributed to turnovers. Is this a situation where only the strong will survive or is it a mere constitution to hang on to see if there will be a favorable outcome for the employees, too?

It has been noted that there are members of the executive leadership who experienced careers in retail on meager earnings. But it appears that the heart of the company has long forgotten the concern of the wage earner as evident in the recent actions executed during the pandemic.

A recent communication with the media stated that Lowe’s employees are not law enforcers, therefore, we (employees) cannot enforce shoppers to wear face masks. This information was disseminated to all employees via internal communication prior to the media reporting on this position. The staff truly understands the gravity within the undertones of this statement.

Yes, the safety of Lowe’s retail employees is paramount. But safety is a two-edged sword at this point. Lowe’s position had even prompted a physician, whom I have known for years, to ask me, "what is this?" With the influx of aggressive customers as evident by social media postings when it comes to asking them to “put on a mask”, employees have taken to devising their own resolution to this “wear a mask” protocol. While I have experienced, on multiple occasions, asking customers to “please put on their mask”, we are fortunate to not have any aggressive confrontations occur at the store. This brings me to another area of concern.

Early in the pandemic, it was reported to the news media that the company would provide for employees at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 emergency paid leave, should the employee feel it necessary to step away from the workplace. Well, this provision has now been rescinded. Now that we are in the flu season, hospitals are gearing up for a possible up-tick of COVID-19 patients. Even while some of the hospitals in low-income, high risk areas are struggling to meet financial obligations, they recognize that they are in a business where caring for people is their mission. Businesses must do all they can to protect their people assets too!

Any student of business and finance can understand that it is not enough to simply be a viable business, but to beat out the competitors is the goal! Lowe’s has shown that the company is strong, as evident in the net sales revenue reported in excess of $25 billion dollars since the beginning of the pandemic. However, during these uncertain times, your valued higher risk employees should not have to make a choice between being present for every shift in order to pay their mortgage or rent, and be at greater risk due to higher numbers of the virus, or staying home, without a paycheck while protecting themselves and the health of their respective families, should the spread of the virus gain momentum. Do understand, while having the support of our leaders, their respective actions are limited.

We were all caught off guard by the pandemic and its wake. How long this will continue is beyond our knowledge. A company’s viability is as vital to the employees as it is to the executive leadership team. It would behoove all big-box stores that have the means to support employees fully to do so. Yes, communities at large do need assistance! However, home support should remain top priority. Decisions made by executive leadership can weigh heavily on the morale of the masses. Why not demonstrate by making certain that knowledgeable employees have a future at the company? To not secure your “higher risk” employees’ financial status speaks volumes as to the mind-set of the executive leadership. On the retail level, it is the knowledgeable employees who are the backbone of the executive leaderships’ respective wealth, the bottom line of the corporation’s income statement and balance sheet, along with the return of the shareholders’ investment!

With all the good that the executive leadership is doing community-wide, this writer would like to think that in spite of the latest revision within the emergency leave policy at Lowe’s, regarding the decision to remove the salary protection for higher risk employees, it will be reversed! “Great power must be exercised with great responsibility”, this has been recognized by the wise since ancient times, such as by the likes of Voltaire, Churchill, and Bill Gates. As evident in Luke 12:48 "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."

After all is said, if you are looking for a company to further your financial goals even while being an entrepreneur that offers good benefits (401k, employee stock options, paid vacation and tuition assistance including financial assistance to learn a trade) hands down, Lowe’s Home Improvement is a major contender.

The key takeaway here is, know and understand your worth. While every living creature is valued, if you feel that your presence is not being appreciated you have the right to proactively seek change and that change does not always translate into resigning from your position!

Holiday Tips!

How to Have Fun and Stay Well!

By Candice Camille The holidays are a special time for all and you should take the time to indulge yourself in all of the delectable sweets and treats the season has to offer. However, you should also keep your health and wellness in mind.

It’s so easy to be tempted and go overboard. I’ve definitely been there and done that. It all starts with Halloween and ends with the New Year. The average person gains about 15 unwanted pounds during this season. During the holidays overeating is easy, with all the good food who wants to think about caloric intake.

Go ahead and enjoy yourself, just be very mindful of your consumption.

Managing meals and movement during the holidays can be very challenging, but it can be done. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on my weight loss journey is that I can’t outrun my fork or out train a bad diet. It was a losing battle, until I discovered the 80/20 principle. If you’re doing what you are supposed to do 80 percent of the time, the other 20 percent doesn't matter.

Here’s how it works. Eat healthy 80 percent of the time which equates to five days a week. The other two days a week which equates to 20 percent would be your “TREAT DAYS" (Remember: Exercise on your treat days).

So here’s the deal, start your healthy eating plan NOW, so during the holiday season it won’t affect you at all.

Follow these tips to stay in control of your fork: Go in with a Plan. Before you put yourself into temptation, tell yourself how much you’re allowed to eat. Allow yourself to indulge on one item such as the appetizers or the dessert – not both.

Do not be too Strict. While you may be tempted to be tough on yourself during other times of the year, the holidays are a time you should allow for some relaxation from the strict behavior. It’s just not that serious, have some FUN. Don’t Punish Yourself. Everyone makes bad choices sometimes. If you do slip up and overeat one day, in the long run it won’t make much of a difference. Do not be tempted to just give up and continue to eat poorly. You have 48 hours to recover from a night of overeating.

Watch the Alcohol. It’s true, alcohol usually flows freely at holiday events. While you may be able to get away with having a few drinks spread out over the evening, remember that the calories add up. Consider alternating between alcoholic drinks and water.

Remember to Take Breaks. During a long evening with family and friends, sometimes you’ll lose track of your eating habits. Concentrate on the conversations you’re having instead of food.

Eat Before You Go. If you’re off to a holiday event at someone else’s house, eat something healthy before you leave.

Just remember to have a good time! If you are bummed about not getting to eat everything you want, concentrate on all the other aspects of the holidays.

There are many other fun activities to engage in that don’t involve eating! Make this holiday season your 20 percent, don’t sweat it, it’s a treat.

Happy Holiday Pet

It is almost that time of the year again. The season is coming where we may get busy planning family functions, outings, and even traveling. As a result of our being busy our pets may take a backseat. Now, that is not to say that we do not love them, but, often we tend to take care of their needs last. This year with the help of this article, let us plan to incorporate them into our pre-planning.

Let us start off with thinking about any of their health care needs. Are there any vaccines due, or are they in need of a spa day?

Remember that our pet makes up a small percentage of the pet community and it is growing leaps and bounds. It may be harder to get an appointment with your veterinarian or pet stylist at the last minute. I always advise scheduling your appointments at the beginning of the year for the entire year. This will ensure that when holiday seasons come around it is not a thought, but just a reminder call from your favorite pet professional. If you have not done so, you might want to place this article down and call now or set a reminder for tomorrow! Once your pet health care needs are addressed let us look at traveling. What accommodations will your pet need? Will they travel with you by car or plane? Will they need to go to a boarding facility, or do they have a personal pet sitter? Remember that the pet community is growing, and things may get booked rather quickly. Addressing these needs will help not just your pet have a happy holiday, but yours will run a little smoother as well. There is nothing like your plans becoming destroyed by a lack of planning.

Now it is dinner time! This may be the hardest time of the holidays. Our pets smell all the food they see us enjoying, all the special foods we have prepared, and they want to take part in the enjoyment. Holiday and normal foods we eat can be harmful to our pets. During the holiday season I specifically make a special dish for my fur babies, boiled sweet potatoes and boiled chicken. No seasonings are needed. I also advise all visitors not to give them any treats. I know their charming little faces may look sad, but a vet bill is not worth their ten seconds of enjoyment. Here is a list of no no’s:

Holiday Foods That Are Dangerous For Pets: (From GoPetFriendly.com) Poultry Bones: The cooking process causes poultry bones to dehydrate and become brittle. If your pet eats them, they can splinter and puncture his stomach or intestines. To prevent accidents and eliminate the temptation for counter-surfing, dispose of the carcass once the turkey is carved and clear the table when you have finished eating.

Turkey Skin: Many holiday foods, like turkey skin and gravy, are high in fat and difficult for pets to digest. These types of food can cause a very painful illness known as pancreatitis, which also leads to vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness. No special treat is worth taking that chance. So, if you are not going to eat it, toss the turkey skin in the bin.

Alcohol: We all know that alcohol poisoning is a human reality. But did you know that alcohol is even more toxic to pets than people? Combine their smaller size and lack of tolerance and sharing your adult beverage could land you at the emergency veterinarian. Signs that your pet is in trouble are staggering and decreased reflexes followed by a slowing respiratory rate, cardiac arrest, and death. The best way to protect your pets is for you and your guests to keep your drinks well out of the reach of curious noses.

Onions: Garlic and onions contain thiosulphate, which causes red blood cells to burst in cats and dogs and can lead to hemolytic anemia. Onions present the highest risk of toxicity – eating a very small amount can have severe effects. Symptoms to watch for include shortness of breath, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. Garlic contains significantly less thiosulphate, and whether a pet could ingest enough to cause harm is questionable. In small doses, the health benefits of garlic appear to outweigh the potential risks.

Various Types of Nuts: Macadamia nuts and pistachios are very rich in fat and can cause pancreatitis, discussed above. In addition, macadamias reportedly contain an unknown toxin that might result in neurological symptoms. Pets have difficulty digesting almonds, walnuts, and pecans, and these nuts are large enough to cause an intestinal obstruction for smaller animals. There are definitely other snacks your pet would prefer.

Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to cats and dogs.

Different forms of chocolate contain more or less of these substances, with dry cocoa powder having the most and white chocolate having the least. Dogs and cats have excellent noses, so it is easy for them to sniff out your hiding spots. Be sure to keep your chocolate in a place safe from pets.

Grapes and Raisins: In 1989, a computerized toxicity database helped veterinarians identify grapes and raisins as the cause of sudden kidney failure in dogs. Although the actual toxin remains unidentified, raisins contain a more concentrated amount – ingesting just small amounts has been fatal for both cats and dogs. Vomiting and hyperactive behavior are the initial signs of poisoning.

Diarrhea can occur, and after 24 hours, the pet may become anorexic, lethargic and depressed.

Ultimately, the kidneys can fail. So, it is important to keep any desserts, dressing, or fruit baskets that contain raisins or grapes well away from your cat and dog.

Doughs with Yeast: It may sound unlikely, but your pet’s stomach is the perfect environment for bread to rise. Raw dough eaten by your pet can expand inside his stomach and result in vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and bloating. When preparing dinner rolls or desserts, make sure your pet does not taste-test the goodies before they are finished.

Nutmeg: This popular spice, commonly used to season pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, and my favorite holiday beverage, Tom and Jerry’s, should never be fed to your pets. Nutmeg, which has mild hallucinogenic properties, can cause seizures, tremors, and central nervous system problems.

In severe cases, shock and even death have been reported. Plain pumpkin and sweet potatoes are good for your pets, so set aside a bit to share with them before adding other ingredients.

Milk: Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy products can give them diarrhea or other digestive upset which can lead to dehydration. Take care to limit the number of dairy products your pets eat as part of other foods you might give them.

From pet health care needs, to traveling and a yummy meal, now you and the fur member, or members, of your family are all set to have a Happy Holiday!

THANKSGIVING IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS: HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVED ONES DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has put a damper on so many of our usual celebrations this year. There have been cancelled weddings, graduations, trips, homecomings and parties. With so much isolation, many of us are itching to get together with family and friends. But before you do, come up with a plan to prevent giving or getting Coronavirus from your loved ones.

The numbers as they stand at the time of this article are sobering. There have been 8.98 million cases of Coronavirus in the United States, and 228,000 have died. The numbers of those affected are growing daily. One thing to note is that all those who survive the virus are not back to their usual state of health. Many have long term problems like chronic fatigue, shortness of breath and heart disease. It’s imperative that we stay vigilant, even though we might be growing weary of the conditions of this pandemic.

Many are hopeful for a Coronavirus vaccine, but it is actually a long way off. Experts predict that the first vaccines won’t be available until mid 2021, and likely longer before it’s widely available to the general public. The best way to prevent Coronavirus at this point is through hand washing, wearing masks and social distancing.

Handwashing is tried and true in the prevention of diseases such as the flu and the common cold.The same holds true for Coronavirus. COVID-19 can live on surfaces for hours to days. It is then possible for you to touch said surface and transfer the virus to your mouth, nose or eyes. Handwashing is best, but if it’s not possible, use an alcohol-based sanitizer until soap and water becomes available.

Masks when in public, or around anyone who doesn’t live with you, are the way to go. Coronavirus is spread by droplets that can come out of a person’s mouth when they cough, laugh, talk or sneeze. These droplets can actually travel pretty far. Properly worn masks prevent infectious persons from spraying Coronavirus into the air.

The correct way to wear your mask is with both your mouth and nose covered, with the metal nose strip (if your mask has one) pressed against the bridge of your nose. Surgical masks, cloth masks and N95’s are some types of masks that have been shown to be effective. Neck gaiters, bandanas and masks with an exhalation valve or filter do not work to prevent transmission.

Social distancing is defined as “...keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household”. This includes aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, granny and anyone who doesn’t live with you. The agreed upon safe distance is at least six feet. It’s important not to let your guard down even when you are around people you are comfortable with. Don’t take your mask off, allow it to slip below your nose or pull it down to talk.

We have to be vigilant about maintaining these standards if we want to beat this virus once and for all.

PLAN A VIRTUAL GATHERING...

So how can we do Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays this season? Carefully and creatively. There’s plenty of time to plan a virtual gathering on Zoom, Google Meet or other online platform. You can schedule a time for family members to see and talk to each other while remaining safe in their own homes. Consider a scaled down gathering and plan to have dinner with just your immediate family.

Make a smaller menu or plan to drop off plates to nearby friends and family members. Get tested before you gather. If your doctor’s office doesn’t offer it, check with urgent cares, retail pharmacies or your state’s website for testing sites.

If you decide to get tested, you’ll need to stay quarantined until you receive a negative result. Once you find out you don’t have the virus, stay home until it’s time to meet with family members so that you don’t become positive after testing. If you have to travel by plane or train, wear a mask in the terminal and on your flight or ride. Take a Ziploc bag with wipes or paper towels moistened with alcohol to wipe down your armrests and tray tables. Bring hand sanitizer with you as well. Change your clothes upon arrival. This is a difficult time for everyone, but the only way we can have happy holidays is to make sure that Coronavirus doesn’t show up as an unwanted guest.

HEALTHY & NUTRITIONAL ALTERNATIVES TO TRADITIONAL

With the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays right around the corner it is a simple fact that your taste buds are starting to become incredibly curious. Now I know that people are strict with tradition when it comes to food during these holidays, but, you like I have not had a traditional year so far due to the pandemic. Most traditional holiday meals are loaded with salt or sugar, making them extremely unhealthy. But there are a few alternative dishes that can remix your traditional menu into a healthier and more nutritional one. Being the chef of my family, I am always encouraged to find new healthier options that provide more of a nutritional value in three separate categories: Main Course, Sides and Desserts. Recipes can be found in a matter of seconds with today’s technology, so I will give you what you basically will need to search for.

Starting with your main course; turkey and ham are traditional holiday meats (most people do not understand Thanksgiving Dinner without them) but there are some alternatives that have more of a nutritional value which are salmon or free-range beef, If tradition is important, a free-range turkey breast would be perfect as well. When trying to figure out what meat is healthy, first understand that the leaner the meat the less the fat content, in turn creating a healthier meat to digest. Free range turkey breast and salmon all are lean meats and can create a perfect spin to your traditional menu. Cooking style plays a part as well. Fried turkey has become a holiday dinner table favorite, but using the brining method on a turkey breast and roasting it properly will produce a juicy, tender and, additionally, a healthier dish. Salmon and lamb properly prepared can be grilled, roasted or broiled leading to the same results.

Sides are the centerpiece of holiday meals. People wait all year long for a specific dish that they only eat around the holidays and normally it’s a side; whether it’s a grandma’s stuffing, a mother’s candied yams or an aunt’s special casserole. You know what you love! These can become unhealthy as well, so some alternatives to these special dishes would incorporate foods such as pumpkin or butternut squash. Living in a society filled with vegetarians, holiday sides have become as important as the main course. Understanding this simple fact will surely force you to remix your menu by providing fresh salads or simple roasted vegetables.

Lastly, holiday desserts can be extremely difficult to make healthy, due to the high sugar content in these delicious treats. But through research, I have found that there are tons of new and innovative ways to recreate those special cakes, pies and cookies we all so desire during the holiday season. Understanding Paleo Baking and using almond or coconut flour will open the door to recreating holiday favorites such as chocolate cake, butter cookies, cheesecake, fudge and, of course, do not forget pumpkin pie.

Holiday celebrations will not be the same this year due to the pandemic. Large meals with 20 or more family and friends gathered in the same room is simply a thing of the past. But that does not mean that the holiday dinner will have to be cancelled.

It just means that more thought and innovation is needed to provide yourself and your family with the healthiest and safest meal possible.

Election Night 2020 left many Americans unsure of the path forward. The overwhelming victory that many Democrats wanted didn’t happen and Trump nation didn’t walk away without a fight. It confirmed that we are a nation divided along political and moral lines.

As a nation, we understood the importance of practicing our right to vote...

Where we are united Voting was a huge issue during the election and both parties were able to increase voter turnout across the country.

Over 140 Million votes were casted and counted during the 2020 Election. This election gave us an opportunity to hear from more Americans since the election of Barack Obama. A unique aspect of this election is our nation is in the midst of a global pandemic. There was an unprecedented number of mail-in ballots, which proved to be the deciding factor in Joe Biden’s victory.

Yes, the mail-in ballots and the early voting process helped in making history this 2020 Presidential election, reaching an all-time high for both mail-in and early voting. Not to mention that Biden and Kamala Harris will go down in history. President-elect Biden chose a woman Vice President as his running mate, having Harris to be the first African and Asian American woman to hold the Vice President seat.

Also, statistics show record breaking numbers of Black voters showing up to vote in states such as Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania because of the high Black voters' turnout in Atlanta, Detroit, and Philadelphia. We can truly say this 2020 Presidential election will be known for its uniqueness because of the pandemic and all the history setting records that were made. Biden/Harris we salute you. Congratulations! Well done!

As a nation, we understand the importance of practicing our right to vote, no matter how you do it, legally! On November 3, we rallied around the democratic process. No matter what party you were for, we VOTED! That gives us hope for the future of Democracy.

There is power in your VOTE! The conversation around voting is especially relevant in the Black community.

Historically, the Black voter turnout is low and over the years that has been attributed to many factors, such as voter suppression and the mindset that “My Vote Doesn’t Count.”

POLITICAL AWARENESS I would argue that it does count, but you have to make it count. Understanding the transition and history of the right to vote and how the process works makes you an informed voter. Political awareness is more than just meeting the candidates, it's about understanding the process. We are privileged in America to have the right to vote and it's important that we are responsible with that right.

What is Voting?

In America we have a Democratic system, which is a form of government where the people hold the power and exercise that right by electing officials to represent them in office. Presidential elections are selected by the electoral college. A candidate needs 270 electoral college votes to secure the Presidency.

Each state is given electoral votes based on the number of representatives in the House and gets at least three electoral votes. In most states, the electoral college will follow the popular vote for the candidate in that state. That does not always mean that who ever wins the popular vote will win the Presidency. We saw that happen in 2016 during the Clinton Vs Trump election. So what does that mean for your actual VOTE? I would like to emphasize that voting for state and local elections is where your actual vote counts -- VOTE for VOTE. In the national elections, your vote counts within your state. Your vote goes to ensure that your state's’ electoral college votes will more than likely go to the most popular candidate among the residents of your state. So does your vote count? Absolutely! As a matter of fact, it is a strong vote when your fellow constituents also practice their right to vote.

VOTE then WHAT? This election has shown us that we have a lot of healing to do as a national community. CNN correspondent, Van Jones said on election night, “A lot of Democrats are hurt tonight”, despite the fact that Biden was ahead, they were hurt because the election was so close. Whether the issue is to wear a mask or not, or if global warming is real, our country is divided right down the middle and everyone has moved to their farthest corners. It's time that we support candidates that represent the whole community, no matter what side of the aisle they sit. In addition to supporting them as they campaign, we have to hold them accountable in office. Elected officials have a duty to service the public which elects them. Once the voting stops, the accountability starts. So no matter who you decided to support with your vote, make sure you hold them accountable for addressing the issues important to your community.

“I am the LEAST Racist: Can It Be Possible?”

By Guest Contributor, Wanda White, Ed.D. The year is 2020, and the issue of racism is a concern for Black Americans and other ethnic minorities over 50 years after the Civil Rights Movement. Everywhere we turn, our nation is migrating backwards on issues of race relations and diversity, and it is becoming uncommon for persons to affirm openly that they have racial biases and/or are not a racist.

According to The Washington Post, “even if you know in your heart that you are not racist, it is possible to have implicit (or unconscious) racial biases. While studies show that we are aware of our explicit, declaratory biases, some prejudices arise without thought, in snap judgments, making them harder for us to detect. For example, on national television in front of millions of viewers, the country witnessed the statement of a world leader exclaim: “I am the least racist.”

The statement had all social media platforms virally questioning exactly what it means to state how one feels about racism in such an indirect, passive way. In fact, the statement itself implies that there are degrees and levels of racism, affirming that one is a racist--- if we were to accept it semantically.

Let us break this down grammatically. The words “least” and “less” are comparative words for the word “little”.

What this means is when using the word ‘least’, the implication is there is something else you are comparing that has the same or similar characteristics.

For Example: Positive Form= Little Comparative Form= Less Superlative Form = Least According to most standard handbooks on grammars of the English language, the degrees of comparison are known as the positive, the comparative, and the superlative. (Actually, only the comparative and superlative show degrees.) When using the comparative form of a word, two items are compared. Likewise, when using the superlative form of a word, three or more items are compared.

So in actuality when the word least is used, this means the speaker is referring to the smallest difference of all, yet still implying that the characteristic, condition, or degree is there. Let us apply this technique using the word sleepy.

Positive: I am a little sleepy.

Comparative: I am less sleepy than my sister. (This shows that my sister is sleepy too) Superlative: I am least sleepy than my sister, brother, and parents. (This shows that my sister, brother, and parents are sleepy too) NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 V&P MAGAZINE | 26

Now apply this same technique to the word racist instead of sleepy.

Positive: I am a little racist.

Comparative: I am less racist than my sister. (This shows that I am racist, AND my sister is racist too in comparison) Superlative: I am the least racist than my sister, brother, and parents. (This shows that I am racist, AND my sister, brother, and parents are racist too in comparison).

Get the point? In order to be the least, one must be comparing it to others who are the same or similar. Therefore, when someone makes the statement, “I am the LEAST racist”, they are implying that yes, I am a racist, but possibly in comparison to others, the lesser of the two.

What can we do to help others realize the semantics and syntax of words can imply other meanings?

Asking them to clarify their statement is a start. Maybe they are unaware of their unconscious, cultural biases. Encouraging open dialogue relevant to race and diversity helps others to become more comfortable addressing their own racial biases. The more people discuss and understand, the better the chances for personal acceptance of cultural and racial biases in the future.

America Sees Your Heart!

Porter Yes, we are in a time and place where we the American people are looking for a good heartfelt story that just touches our soul and speaks to our heart. One major act of kindness has done just that. An act of kindness has gone a long way to brighten up someone's day or should we say over forty (40) million people’s day.

Here is a story that the community is talking about and the name that is quickly becoming a household one is DaKara Teresa Farraka Spence of Decatur Georgia. DaKara is one of the managers at The Spot Sports Bar & Grill where she has been working for just three months. The newly renovated sports bar is under the new ownership of Leo Ewing. The Spot Sports Bar & Grill is THE SPOT that is now the talk of the town.

DaKara was hired to be a part of the new management task force team in order to help the owner, Leo, to reestablish the restaurant as being known for its excellent customer service, great food choices, and an atmosphere of being family/community friendly. “As a businessman, in the heart of the community, it is important to me that I build a relationship with the community in which I am serving. Giving job opportunities to my people allows them to have a step in the right direction. Helping them to develop and helping them to make career choices for themselves is what I can best show as an entrepreneur who once was in their shoes” said Leo. So, on this particular day, DaKara allowed her heart to be touched by one young lady who showed up for the interview looking as if she was going through difficult times and was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.

DaKara’s heart did not judge, instead her heart was full of compassion and empathy. Because of DaKara’s act of kindness, this young lady, Kallayah Monet Jones, has entered into the homes and hearts of us all.

Kallayah had been struggling with homelessness and finding a job, which became more difficult with the COVID-19 Pandemic. “I was so excited and so happy that someone had given me an interview and didn’t turn me away because I am homeless and had no money to fix my hair and no decent clothes to wear. I showed up with a scarf on my head, a pair of jeans and slippers. DaKara gave me an interview anyway."

"Most places I went to had turned me down because of my appearance. Once I left the interview not even knowing at the time if I had gotten the job or not, I felt so good just to be interviewed. I had a good feeling that maybe I will get the job so I stood in the parking lot of the restaurant, looked around to make sure no one was watching. and I did my happy dance” said Kallayah.

"I wanted to dance like nobody was watching but the chances are usually somebody is watching but it’s okay and in this case somebody was watching.”

When we asked DaKara what made her want to hire Kallayah, her response was, “I was taught by my grandmother and my mother to never judge a book by its cover and to never judge a person because you never know what they are going through. You can easily be in the same situation. In that moment I saw myself in Kallayah. I, too, had been homeless before and in spite of my circumstances I had to remember my course of action that got me through such a horrific moment. I felt rewarded and my heart was filled with joy.

It gave me great confidence. So, when I saw Kallayah, I saw someone who needed help, and

someone who needed a little guidance. But more importantly, I saw someone, who even in the midst of her challenges, her spirit was still high and she just needed someone to give her an opportunity. So I did just that!

When I saw her do the happy dance on our video cameras outside of the restaurant, not knowing that she had the job. I immediately called her and told her she had the job and that she can keep on dancing.”

Now, the famous video tape of the happy dance has gone viral, with over 40 million views.

DaKara wanted the world to see the recording to have something that warmed our hearts, to give us a little something to smile about, especially when we are in a time of uncertainty with this pandemic.

The young ladies have been on a notoriety tour. They first received a personal call from the Ellen DeGeneres Show asking for an appearance in order to share their story. While on the show, Ellen surprised them both with a fifteen thousand dollar check. They both were so elated and over the top with joy! Show, Good Morning America, and their local news station in Decatur Georgia. V&P Lifestyle Magazine is privileged to be the first magazine to feature their story as a front cover exclusive. When DaKara was informed that V&P had decided to feature their story as the main cover she was so thankful and so filled with joy that she started to cry.

When Kallayah and DaKara were asked the final question of the interview, “What is your Vision & Purpose?", Kallayah expressed that she wants to go back to school and become a business owner in the beauty industry specializing in hair care products; Her company will be named Kalaxxyy Beauty Inc. DaKara wants to go back to school, as well, and get her degree in criminal justice. She also plans to become a world renowned comedian so she can continue to fill the hearts of the American people with a little laughter and always make sure she is giving back to her community.

November Is National Family Caregivers Month Across America, daughters and sons balance the work of caring for aging parents with the demands of their careers and raising their own children. National Family Caregivers Month is a time to reflect on the compassion and dedication that family caregivers embody every day. Purple is the ribbon color.

November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes. This year's focus is on taking care of youth who have diabetes. Many causes and conditions have a colored ribbon to symbolize the cause. The diabetes community has done something very different. The blue circle is the universal symbol for diabetes.

December is HIV/AIDS Awareness Month. Red is the ribbon color.

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A Perfect Stranger Donates a Kidney TEAM COPELAND CELEBRATES THREE YEARS!

V&P Community Outreach gives a special highlight to the Copeland Family...Team Copeland as they are called. This is a heartfelt family story that shows you how true love, the power of God, and community outpouring can collide with such a positive force bringing an everlasting impression to all of us.

Most of the world learned of their story on the Television Network Fox Broadcasting Company game show “Beat Shazam”, hosted by Jamie Foxx. The show first aired on May 25, 2017. Team Copeland was later featured as contestants on the show. When Jamie asked them to introduce themselves and to share their story; this is when our hearts filled with joy and happy tears flowed.

Who Is Team Copeland and What Is Their Story?

The Copeland’s are a husband and wife team, Carlos and TaTaNisha, who are natives of Atlanta, Georgia. They met at the University of West Georgia in 1992 and dated while in college, becoming the best of friends.

They were known for being the most adorable couple on campus.

Carlos and TaTaNisha later married in 1997. They both went on to have promising careers and a growing family of two children, son Jacob and daughter Maya.

Life for the Copeland’s was GREAT! They were living a pretty normal life. “Yes, we were just a normal family of four dealing with work and school,” said Carlos. In the middle of an enjoyable trip to Minnesota Carlos was told by his doctor to rush back to Atlanta. She had discovered that his kidneys were failing.

He was later diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease. Due to Carlos’ rapid kidney failure, it was recommended he start dialysis immediately. He opted for peritoneal dialysis (PD), which is an at home treatment.

Carlos and his family had to adapt persistently to a new way of living. Their home became a treatment center and every member of the household had their role.

Jacob who was twelve at the time, Maya who was eight, and wife TaTaNisha had to be Carlos’ biggest supporters and they did so with flying colors.

After four years of being on dialysis and still on the donor’s waiting list for a kidney, the family decided to take matters into their own hands. With lots of prayer and the grace of God the Copeland family took their story to social media in hopes of finding a donor. By using social media to help spread the word about Carlos, someone saw their cry for help on Instagram and was moved to help by offering to donate one of their kidneys.

At first, Carlos and his family were very shocked to learn that someone reached out and wanted to go through the process. Several people had previously tried to donate, but were not able to complete the full process successfully. The Copeland family was obviously very appreciative, grateful, and humbled by this amazing act of kindness.

A total stranger, at the time, said that God moved her to help save a father’s life. Now, the Copeland family had hope. Staci Erickson was truly their saving ANGEL. Staci drove all the way from Texas to Alabama to be tested and was a perfect match. The gift to the Copeland family continues to be a great blessing.

Team Copeland is happy to report the kidney transplant was a success. Once the kidney transplant is successfully done, there is generally a recovery period that can vary anywhere from weeks to months dependent upon the patient. Carlos’ recovery period, posttransplant, lasted about three months. The recovery period can last much longer because with a new kidney, the patient’s immune system is compromised. The doctor described it as having the immune system of a “new born baby”. There is also a chance that the kidney can reject and no longer work.

Transplant rejection is a common fear for recipients. It is very important to stay safe and avoid germs at all times.

It is also important to mention that as we currently face a pandemic, kidney patients and organ transplant recipients are considered to be in a “high risk” group. They are at a greater risk for contracting COVID-19 and an even greater risk of not recovering from it if they get it.

Nevertheless, life is great for the Copeland family!

Their major goal is to live life to the fullest. “We want to make up for the lost time when Carlos was sick” said wife TaTaNisha. The family is happy to report that Carlos has found great pleasure in helping other “kidney warriors” who have experienced kidney disease and are currently battling the disease. He is presently using his platform to speak at various kidney awareness events. Carlos also serves as a mentor and ambassador with The American Association for Kidney Patients (AAKP) in his home state of Georgia. His ultimate goal is to finish and publish a book that he has been working on so that it might serve as an inspiration for others.

National Donor’s Day is observed every year on February 14th. Green is the national ribbon color for Donor’s Day.

If you are an author or an aspiring author, it takes more than just writing a book to get your writings in the hands of readers! While many authors enjoy the art of writing, still others do not have a plan for building a platform.

Simply put, they do not have a way for readers to get to know who they are and what they write!

In this article, I share some basic steps that authors can take to sell their books and produce more success as they use their minds to craft their uniqueness while writing.

Some think that if you write, possess great writing skills, and publish your book that it will produce success. Truth be told, it takes a lot more than that!

You must have a platform and even publishing companies will not automatically give you a contract unless you have a strong platform.

You can start by consistently finding a way to sell your books to a targeted and focused group of readers. It is important for you to define and identify your exact brand.

One way that I have found is to display my books on my website. There are times that I may share via my blog or through other social media outlets. You will be amazed at how many people will purchase your books just by you reaching out and marketing your writing. Another great resource is that avenue that we all have access to and that is email. Build that email group and start promoting your books. When you have an opportunity, be a guest on a radio or tv show or a podcast show.

Whatever means it takes to get you and your books in the hands of readers, go for it! I have even had success in attending events and promoting my books. Schedule book signings and consider being a keynote speaker at an event to get to sell your books. No matter the steps you take, keep in mind that you can probably find a way to promote and sell your books in a multitude of ways.

Authors Speak

It is important to remember that your platform is simply defined by your ability to sell books just because of who you are and how many readers you can reach! You can do this offline or online to boost your brand, your visibility, and make it quicker to reach your targeted audience.

Then the general public can learn more about you, buy your books, and get to know more about you as an author.

As we know, when we are connected to others, we are more likely to build our brand to maximize our potential to sell our books. We will have to extend our connections beyond just family, friends, and those in our immediate circle. Other people will get to know firsthand about the genre of writing we focus on, our bestsellers, our passion for writing, and all the factors that make us the authors we are. Remember to connect, connect, connect!

Again, the author’s platform will let readers know immediately about your books and help you get to know new readers as well.

You will be able to maintain your existing readers by keeping them engaged through your platform and hopefully, get them to assist you with promoting and sometimes even selling your books.

Another great benefit is that you will get to gain and retain more readers. Consider marketing yourself in a variety of different venues and even far away places. Build strong and solid relationships with diverse groups outside of your comfort zone and be consistent in your strategy.

Many authors have a catalogue of their books which consist of hardbacks, paperbacks, audio, large print, and other types of books. Some successful authors join Amazon’s KDP select program, while others opt out and create their own ways to promote their books.

Now that you have an idea about what avenue you may take in building your platform, let us focus on some simple strategies you can employ to build your own successful platform.

As an author, you must know what audience you will need to target. For example, I am an educator. Therefore, I target educational groups, but not exclusively. You simply cannot just know who your targeted audience is, but you must know everything about your targeted audience.

Some of the things that may assist you in building your platform with this strategy is to know the following: What location are they in What is their occupation Exactly who are they, what is the age range, Do they have particular hobbies in common Do they have any common challenges Do they spend a lot of time offline or online What type of books do they want to read

Knowing these answers will help you to focus your time and energy, not to mention increase your readership.

There are many ways you can identify your targeted readers.

For example, one may search social media groups interested in your particular book, think about the format or genre of your books, and use google or other means to search for books similar to your book and tap into those groups.

Once you have decided on your brand, that will help people to recognize you. They will begin to form opinions about your personality, your style, your voice, your values, and what makes you so unique.

If you are unsure of your brand, think about the following and plan based on your style: will you use your pen name or your real name, what colors and fonts will you use to brand yourself, what catch phrases will you use, will you use professional photos in your branding or use everyday photos to connect, what is your one sentence tagline, how will you communicate on a regular basis, and what information will you release about yourself? This decision will identify and define your brand and can influence people’s perceptions of you as an author.

I can share from experience that building a website has been one of my most effective ways to build my brand and it can do the same for you. Make sure to get some professional input as to how to do this and think about the functionality of your website. I recall some tips my website designer shared with me and I now share with you. They are: think about how you want to showcase your brand with taglines, headshots, colors, etc., make it look professional, keep it updated with relevant information, and have it centered around a focal theme.

A website allows readers to find you and your books quickly. It can be a permanent way for you to brand, market, and share your books. After all, you have onehundred percent control over your website and you can sell your books directly. Make sure it is mobile friendly, easy to navigate and the content is easy for readers.

Other methods to build your platform is to consider blogging so that you can share portions of your writings. This gives you a way to sample your writings with your targeted readers. It increases your credibility, and it gives you a chance to connect with your readers when you respond to their comments.

There are so many best practices with blogging. So, blog away!

I have used the strategy of writing guest posts where you share on another person’s site. This gives you the opportunity to introduce your brand to a new group of people, you attract more people, direct more traffic to your sites and develop those relationships.

Connecting offline can consist of many simple strategies, such as keeping friends, neighbors, family, and other groups informed about what you do.

Share your business cards, join an author group, attend conferences and special events, speak at well-known speaking engagements, and attend local and national events.

Last, but not least, use all social media wisely to build your platform and increase your brand’s visibility. Think about Earlier I mentioned building an where your targeted audience email list. A great way to experiment with selfexpression is to develop your own sense of fashion. The clothes you wear on a daily basis, help to create your image and allow you to make your unique mark on the world and give other people a glimpse of who you really are.

Putting together a gorgeous look every day can be difficult. However, outfit inspiration can be very effective at helping you learn what look and piece of clothing you like and what type of style you want to create for yourself.

Cold weather can be an incredible time for fashion.

Think boots, layers, faux fur and warm weather accessories galore.

Let’s start off by saying the Fall/Winter season has several bright trends that I will mention and talk about, but also share stylish ideas for each day. Let’s talk about oversize clothes. The great advantage of oversize clothing is you can cover body imperfections. Denim is also a modern teenager's most universal choice for any event.

At this age clothing plays an important role in shaping personality. Of course every girl's wardrobe is unique and does not look like anybody else’s. But if you look closely you can find common fashionable things. What stylish teen clothes aren’t worth paying attention to?

In the cold of the winter puffer jackets are a tremendous fashion trend and warm look. Formulate a cozy warm, stylish outfit for those relaxed days and weekends, pair an essential black puffer coat with your go-to leggings.

The teen years can be a confusing stage, especially when it comes to individual style and fashion. Instead of trying to always fit in with the peer group, as most teens do, it’s also about being an individual and making your own mark. Layering is one fashion trend that is always the rage, and goes perfect for all age groups.

Any teen can use some bright colors in her/his winter wardrobe to make sure the look is structured, yet vibrant. With being a teen we love all the new fashions and I die to break fashion rules, by making combo style and color mismatch mistakes, which make my outfits look interesting and eye-catching. Woolen sweaters have been trending lately. Wear them with distressed jeans for a casual style. Cashmere sweaters and blazers are also a great choice for the Fall/Winter season. You can wear them with printed trousers or embellished jeans for a unique look.

These Fall/Winter outfit ideas can be worn by teen girls or women. No matter what kind of style you have, you can’t go wrong with any of these ideas that I listed! This is the kind of season that combines the fine glimpses of fall and winter fashion into something that has the uniqueness of both the seasons.

Fall/Winter season is here and there are so many different types of clothing to choose from! You could try pairing a cute cardigan with a burnt orange top and some high-waist jeans. You could even get yourself a leather or pleather jacket and some black jeans to spice up your look. Fall/Winter season is here and you know what that means? Hoodie season

You can pair any type of hoodie or sweatshirt, cropped or oversized, with some leggings, jeans, or sweats. Don't forget your Ugg boots. The Ugg boots are in high fashion around this time of the year and they come in all sorts of styles and colors and are perfect for any outfit. Yes, as you can see this look made both Nyla’s and my lists for this year’s season.

This season is also all about neutral colors. Your browns, burnt oranges, warm yellows, and peach colors. These colors make you feel all warm and cozy inside.

"BOOTS ARE ALL THE RAVE!" As winter is slowly creeping up, you know what that means? Anything fur! You could get a cute waistcoat with a fur-lined hood so you can stay bundled up and still look chic. This season is all about standing out amongst the cold and snow. I mean it is that time of year where red and black are perfect colors to help you stand out. You could get a red bubble coat and pair it with some blue high waist jeans and some thigh-high black boots to create a perfect night out look.

For this season boots are all the rave. Another item to make you stand out this season is anything that shines. Dresses that have glitter and sparkles would pair cute with a simple around the ankle heels as well as make a super chic outfit for this holiday season. Gold and silver accessories such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are perfect for this season and will go perfectly with any look you choose.

The Fall/Winter season is upon us, so go grab your puffer jacket, grab your Uggs, and your favorite mask and go experiment with the latest fashion for this Fall/Winter 2020.

By Tony Turner It's time to trim those ends. You know our bodies are like the seasons, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Our bodies are constantly adapting to our surroundings, which brings me to those unkept ends on your head of hair. Trimming your ends is a very important part of keeping your hair healthy. Most sistas run from the sheers, talking about "DON'T CUT ALL MY HAIR OFF!"

Even the fellas need a good trim now and then. It keeps the hair from unraveling, so to speak. It just makes the hair look and feel better. It builds healthy strands of hair. On the fun side of things a fresh haircut can bring in a whole new aura. A new look, a new perception, a new attitude. From blunt cuts to layers, from bobs to barber cuts, represent fresh starts and rebirth.

Some are so in love with the length that they are in denial, 60 percent of the hair is healthy 40 percent of the hair is torn up!

Wear and tear affects all things, including our hair. So what's a competent hair stylist to do? Well, there is what we should do and what we do to help our clients out with hair trim PTSD. We want to do what is right and also keep you as a customer. So we do a very conservative hair trim and walk you through it, until you are comfortable with the idea of keeping your ends healthy with a good trim or cut.

Cuts can be conservative or vanguard. Cuts and colors go well together. It's amazing what a little cutting can do! Shaping the hair can add texture and volume to your hair styles. This is why I say less is more!

More healthy, more creative, more expressive, all with the closing of a pair of sheers or a swipe of a razor/clippers. A little less on your head, a little more on the floor leaves you with a world of possibilities! You let a little go and you gain so much more!

As the season changes, so do we. There is a time for cutting and a time for growing. Trimming should be a must, but only with someone you trust (Licensed Professional preferred). Here are some great ideas for your transformation and preservation. I will say less.

It's that time of the year to celebrate and be filled with love, laughter and holiday cheer. Spending time with family and friends, as well as, shopping for those Black Friday deals is a big part of the season!

What's on your list for Hair Care products? Winter weather can be a challenge for your hair, it can cause dryness of the scalp and hair, as well as hair shedding. Do you know what type of shampoo or conditioner is right for you? Choosing the right shampoo for your hair and scalp is important. Some people deal with dandruff or other scalp conditions that require a medicated shampoo (prescribed by a dermatologist), while others can purchase a dry scalp shampoo over the counter. If you have dry hair, color or chemically treated hair, you would need to use a conditioning or moisturizing shampoo which is designed to help make the hair smooth and shiny which helps to avoid damage and improve manageability of the hair. Conditioning agents and natural plant extracts help to restore moisture, elasticity and strengthen the hair shaft. Conditioning treatments for your hair is important, it helps to deposit protein and moisture to the hair which helps to restore strength and body and protects the hair from possible breakage.

Conditioning the hair weekly is highly recommended. Add a lightweight hair oil to your Hair Care list. You want to add luster and shine to the hair to help prevent dryness and breakage to your hair strands and still have body and manageability of the hair without being weighed down. Apply to your scalp as needed. The scalp produces its own natural oils, so you want to avoid build up which can cause blackheads.

How are you protecting your hair underneath your hats? Wool, cotton or other fabrics can cause breakage to your hair strands. It can also cause friction and tearing against your hair edges to your nape area as well as dryness to the hair. It's time to invest in a silk scarf and pillowcase. Silk is a hypoallergenic and it helps to keep your hair hydrated without drying out your natural oils. Simply wear a silk scarf when wearing hats, scarfs and nightly hair wraps. It helps the hair cuticles glide smoothly underneath and helps to prevent moisture loss and hair breakage.

Lastly, keep up with your hair trims. Sometimes your hair will begin to shed more during the winter. Staying on track with your hair trims keeps a healthy routine for continued hair growth. The longer you wait will turn a trim into a haircut. Hair trims should be serviced every six to eight weeks.

PERFORMANCE AND PROTEST: WHEN ART SHOWED UP AND SHOWED OUT FOR JUSTICE

History reveals many examples of music, as with other art forms that have made an impact and lasting impressions during prominent moments of the past and present. Here we highlight a few instances when art has linked arms with protest.

SAVAGE In September of 2020, music performer Megan Thee Stallion paused momentarily during her Saturday Night Live (SNL) television show performance of 'Savage', as audio emanating the words and voice of Malcolm X, along with that of, social justice leader Tamika Mallory, powerfully echoed calls for justice, equality and self awareness.

That evening, 'round midnight, using the national platform of SNL, the popularity of her music, along with the pulse of prominent voices, she made known the need to support and to protect Black women merging art and protest with a live television audience. Megan also maintained a vested interest in making this statement, as she had recently been shot in the foot by a fellow music artist.

Following the performance, some commentators voiced immediate support for her. Others wondered about the potential mixed messaging of her visual motif juxtaposed with Malcolm's insights. However, there is a consensus that Megan's moment was powerful. Likewise, the ageless combination of creative content and the 'call out' remains an effective resource for facilitating dialogue that, hopefully, instigates progress.

STRANGE FRUIT

Of the 4,743 Americans that were lynched in the United States between 1882 - 1968, among them 72.7 percent were African Americans, per statistics provided by NAACP.com.

Upon seeing a photograph depicting a lynching, Jewish writer Abe Meeropol wrote a poem in 1939 and created music for it. Later, the song entitled Strange Fruit was presented to African American female singer, Billie Holiday, whose subsequent performance of the song in New York clubs became a powerful melodic cry for the end to lynching.

Meeropol's lyrics never mentioned the word, yet his deft poetry and Holiday's haunting voice amplified the graphic horror of lynching, while simultaneously placing mainstream America squarely in the seat of responsibility for ending that particular version of domestic terror.

America did not respond kindly to this melodic accusation. The singer and songwriter faced both police interrogation, as well as harassment due to the socially damning power of Strange Fruit. Nevertheless, this pre Civil Rights era song, in conjunction with efforts by organizations like the NAACP, served to further put the nation on notice regarding its homicidal behaviour.

Years later, Time magazine named Strange Fruit, the 'Song of the Century' and the Library of Congress has included it in the National Recording Registry.

FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW WAS ENUF Some art works bring light to the cultural conversation while some creative works change the narrative. Ntozake Shange's choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enuf portrays, through a series of twenty poems, the realities of seven women in their efforts to rise above oppression, abuse and cultural neglect. The poems are interconnected by music and dance. The simplistic yet vibrant motif is arrayed via the dresses worn by the women, in the single colors of green, red, yellow, blue, brown, orange and purple.

For Colored Girls is situated in the ancient traditions of sisterhood and safe space amongst women of color while being voiced through the dialogue and dialect of African American women. Similarly, Shange's masterpiece helped to renew the timeless customs of acknowledgement, empowerment and self care by creatively emphasizing their value within the context of modern language.

In 2010 the play was released as a feature length film, directed by Tyler Perry. More recently during 2019, For Colored Girls was revived off-broadway at the Public Theatre in New York City, directed by Leah C. Gardiner. Shange passed in 2018, though her voice through her choreopoem, yet lives.

DO THE RIGHT THING In the sweltering Summer of 1989 a fictional riot broke out in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. By the time the tumultuous cinematic scenario concluded, Sal's pizza restaurant was destroyed by fire.

Suddenly, the firemen turned their water hoses upon the crowd of angry youth that sought swift justice for their friend, Radio Raheem, who only moments earlier had been killed by police. This intense scene marked the crescendo in writer and director Spike Lee's major motion picture Do The Right Thing. The film debuted an entire generation prior to the names of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Sandra Bland and Eric Garner being publicly presented to us as a result of systematically biased and inadequate policing. Lee masterfully represented these realities on the big screen.

Leading up to the fiery riot, the director carefully utilized screen time and vibrant characters to reveal the ingrained cultural sentiments of the type that have added strength to racial discord. He further magnified the tension with a montage of various characters voicing statements that one ethnic group may say about the other when the other group is not present. Thirty years later, those colorful yet abrasive moments continue to be precious cinematic evidence of real feelings and thoughts of derision that exist within the American societal fabrique.

LIFT EV'RY VOICE In July of this year, recording artist Kirk Franklin offered a musical measure of resilience amidst all that this year has wrought. In doing so, he created an inspiring, choral arranged version of Lift Ev'ry Voice commonly known as Lift Every Voice and Sing, accompanied by a joyful video.

Many decades earlier, in 1900, an event was being planned to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday. James Weldon Johnson decided to write a poem that could be performed by school children. His brother John Rosamond Johnson created music to accompany the poem. The student's performance was a rousing success and the legacy of this legendary song Lift Ev'ry Voice had only just begun.

Almost twenty years after its creation, the NAACP adopted the Johnson brother's masterpiece as the Negro National Anthem. As such, the song became a central theme within the soundtrack to the African American's epic journey toward social justice and has sustained cultural relevance for the entire one-hundred twenty years of its existence.

This includes numerous remakes of the soulful hymn by artists such as Franklin, as well as, historical performances of this eloquent anthem, like Kim Weston's live rendition at the Wattstax concert in 1972.

This fall, the National Football League acknowledged the ongoing Civil Rights movement for social justice championed

by African Americans and, thus, played the Negro National Anthem before the start of each league game during the first week of the current NFL season. Indeed, this inspired musical legacy of protest, acknowledgement and hope continues. Lift Ev'ry Voice remains a key note in the playlist for equality.

THE SPORTS REPORT WITH LADY K

By Karen McConnell-Jones It’s the holidays and we still have the NFL games, what a combination. Yes, for me, there’s nothing more exciting than being in the holiday season, but, more importantly, for us sports heads, nothing is better than enjoying the holiday season with family and watching the sports, especially the NFL football games. Family, food and football have been a tradition in most American households during this time of the year for decades.

Allow me to paint the picture! It’s Thanksgiving Day and every football fan knows there will be some turkey eating and some football watching going on. Two things we know for sure, the Detroit Lions will play the first game of the day and the Dallas Cowboys will play the second game on Turkey Day. So, let’s say our prayers, voice what we are thankful for and then get to eating and watching those football games, while a lot of family smack talking (junk talking) will be going down!

Here are some fruitful facts for you. The Detroit Lions have played every Thanksgiving game since 1934, with the exception of 1939 and 1944.

Dallas Cowboys have played every Thanksgiving game since 1966, with the exception of 1975 and 1977. WOW, what history!

But wait!!! There is more! We now have Thanksgiving night football and this year it’s a good one. We have the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers playing. What a treat! We football fans didn’t always have a Thursday night game. Thursday’s night football games started in 2006, now allowing us football heads to have a third game on Thanksgiving night and we just love it.

NFL Thanksgiving Fruitful Facts Do you know out of 32 teams in the NFL that only one team has never played on Thanksgiving Day? The Jacksonville Jaguars began playing in 1995 as an expansion team to the league and remains the only team that has never played on Thanksgiving Day. In NFL Thanksgiving football history there are only four teams that are undefeated on Thanksgiving Day, which are the Baltimore Ravens (with two appearances), New Orleans Saints (with three appearances), North Carolina Panthers (with one appearance), and the Houston Texans (with one appearance).

In 1989, John Madden, of CBS at the time, awarded the first “Turkey Leg Award” for the games’ Most Valuable Player (MVP) to Reggie White. Since that time, Running Back Emmitt Smith has won the “Turkey Leg Award” five times, having Emmitt to hold the record, to this day, as the winningest Thanksgiving MVP player. Special Tribute To One of Our Own Roland “Bubba” Grimes

By Karen McConnell-Jones Roland “Bubba” Grimes was a HERO in FOOTBALL and MEDIA, especially in the eyes of his community. To have known Roland is to know that football, media, and entertainment (P-Funk) were in his DNA and he was the best at all three.

In Football, Roland was a fine example of an athlete in his purpose and in his greatness. He used his love of the sport and his athletic abilities to set and break so many records during his time of play, while using his knowledge and skillful mindset of the game to coach the future stars of the sport of football to greatness.

As a young boy, Roland moved to the Prince George’s County, Maryland area starting his football journey by joining the Forestville Boys Club football team. He then went on to attend Bishop McNamara High School and he quickly became the school and fans favorite. Roland was diligent, focused and a hard worker in both football and education. In his senior year Roland helped to lead his team to the WCAC Championship by defeating the DeMatha Stags. He was inducted into the McNamara Hall of Fame, causing Roland to be the most sought after athlete of his time for college football recruiters. Roland received so many recruiting offers from different colleges and universities such as Penn State, West Virginia University, Virginia Tech, and Ohio State University, just to name a few. After so many offers to choose from Roland ultimately decided on the “Orangemen” of Syracuse University where he played as their fullback.

Roland went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Family and Community Services and a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation/School Counseling. His football career led him to play and coach in the semi-pro football league where he was admired and respected on both sides of the fence, as a player and then as a coach, in which he left his mark on both. Roland will forever be missed in life and in the world of sports.

In Media, Roland's taste for media started while he was in college at Syracuse University. Using his influence as an athlete, but, more importantly using his voice to bridge the gap on the social issues and the injustices happening in his community and in other underserved communities will say that Roland was truly before the times on the issues and to prove his point just look at where we are right now today in the world. Truly these life experiences, social issues and injustice have come full circle once again.

Now, here is where Roland's and my path crossed in the media arena over six years ago. We both were passionate about being positive voices for our communities. Also, it didn’t hurt that this girl knew a thing or two about sports, particularly football and tennis. Yes, of course, before I got inducted into the Roland “Bubba” Grimes Hall of Fame of football I had to prove myself and earn the seal of approval from the MAN himself! We were the best at doing the sport report together in one of my segments on my talk show the Voice of Class Act. Even though he was a Washington fan and I am a Dallas Cowboys fan we got along.

Ironically, I as a Dallas fan, introduced Roland to my friend former Washington player Marvcus Patton; and, Roland as a Washington fan introduced me to his friend former Dallas Cowboys player Mike London.

With smiles, that’s how we roll! Shortly after Roland and I connected, we were known in the DMV as the best tag team couple of community media. Roland was truly my engineer and producer of choice to run my show and to be my running mate. We even earned the nicknames of “Studio Husband & Studio Wife”, which we treasured to the end and our love for political awareness was the icing on the cake.

Through the Voice of Class Act Talk Show, Roland had the pleasure of meeting former State’s Attorney, now County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (Yes, wouldn’t you know it Roland had Angela jamming to some P-Funk on our commercial breaks), Delegate Darryl Barnes, Circuit Court Judge Ingrid Turner and Chief of Police Anthony Ayers, just to name a few. But the endeavor I’m most proud of is when I came up with the idea of hosting a candidate forum at my home, having two forums, one for the women candidates and the second for the men candidates and asking Roland to live-stream them both. After that we were truly the talk of the town for a good while.

Also, thanks to our IT guy Densil Bennett, we had flat screen TV’s everywhere. Densil really made my home truly resemble a studio for a candidate forum; and, special thanks to Roland’s cousin , Sherri Cook, for being our gracious host and greeter for both events.

We had candidates as well-known as former Congresswoman Donna Edwards to candidate Wala Blegay for State Delegate and candidate Vangie Williams for Congress 1st District.

Also in attendance for the men we had in the house candidate Ben Jealous for Governor, candidate Everett Browning for State Senator, Michael Lyles for State’s Attorney, and the list just continued to grow as candidates just started showing up that were not on the list but wanted to be in the room and have a seat at the table.

Roland and I pulled it off and the event was the HIT of that year; “The Community Candidate Forum for the People 2018” is what we called it.

Roland went on to recreate the Roland Grimes Show Live on Stage at the Black Box Theatre. I was so honored to be a part of Roland’s comeback, to the point Roland and I came back together once again to do Live on Stage at the Marlton Country Club. Again, we were the best tag team EVER!!!

I would be remiss if I didn’t end this wonderful story with what was most important to Roland, and that was family. Roland truly loved his family and his family time. Anyone that knew Roland knows there was no breaking his tradition of Sunday dinner and football with his mom, The First Lady of his heart. He was her BIG baby to the end. The closeness he shared with his two sisters was undeniable. In conversation with his older sibling Sonia Brooks, I can hear the love and the closeness they shared. It actually made me smile as it brought me to tears all in the same breath.

Thank you Sonia for taking my call at your family's most vulnerable time and you even found it in your heart to still be comforting to me. Cousin Sherri Cook because of Roland, we'll always have a special bond. You, Roland, and I truly made some media history together. I know you honestly admired your cousin and looked up to him so much as you would often let it be known how Roland gave you your start in media as a co-host on his talk show, and now you have created your own show B to the 3rd Power with your cohost.

Roland was very proud of you. And, thanks for sharing with me how you created a family reunion this past August 30, 2020, via zoom, which was your act of kindness that allowed most of the family to have their one last memory of Roland.

Lastly, the love he shared with his three children truly gave him daddy bragging rights. Let the record show he bragged all the way to the end. At the family reunion zoom celebration this August, he made sure to brag to the family about his daughter just receiving a job offer and now she is working for the Miami Dolphins. “Daddy was bragging” said Cousin Sherri with laughter. Roland was always over the moon about the athletic skills that he and his children had in common or as he would say “it’s in the DNA baby”, yet he was equally if not more impressed with the educational talent that they all shared. Continue to follow your DREAMS and to be true to your purpose. You guys made your dad PROUD! To my Studio Husband you will forever be in my heart. I will miss you immensely. I know the last we talked you were going to give me one of your sports stories for the magazine and join the team. I honestly believe you just gave me the best one of them all. The story on how you lived, loved, and played the best game of this thing we call LIFE. May you rest in peace Roland “Bubba” Grimes. Love you always. With all our love from your media family, thanks for leaving an everlasting impression on our hearts.
