MywifeandI,andouradultchildrenforthatmatter,seemtohaveverymuch enthusiasticallyembracedtheconceptofminimalism.Partofitwasexperiencing arefreshingdownsizingfromaverybighouse,toabighouse,tonowlivingfulltimeinwhatwasourformersecondhome.
I'mcontinuingtoworkondownsizingmoreofmypaperfiles.Donatingthevast majorityofmybooksfeltalittlesad,likeIwassayinggoodbyetooldfriendswho hadtaughtmealotorbeenthereformewhenIneededthem.Ialsothrewaway mostofmyawards,plaques,nicelyframedandmattedbiographicalnewspaper articlesandmagazinespreads—doingthatseemedkindofweird,asifIwas diminishingthehonor.Butthephysicalartifactismoresymbolthantotem.Ihave nopublicofficeanymore,Idon’tneedtoseethemdaily,sowhoamItryingto impress?
Ihavetoadmit,Ididtakephotographsofthemandnowkeepthoseinadigital file.Fornogreatlogicalreason,moresoemotionalIsuppose.Ithelpedwith disposingofthem.

Thisyear,myrunner-daughtersentmealinkabouttheEverestChallenge2020, whichwastorun,hike,andcycletheheightofEverest’s29,029verticalfeet betweenthefirstofSeptemberandthetail-endofOctober.Ifoundagreathill nearmyhousethatwasperfectandfoundthatitwasagreatrunningroutine.
