Mr. Health & Fitness 2024 Challenge for B+ Foundation Fighting Pediatric Cancer OK, this is a wee-bit embarrassing as I have always been self-conscious about my body – let alone what I try to make it do. Nevertheless, I competed in the Mr. Health & Fitness 2024 Challenge, and to my surprise, I made it in the Top Five!

I had a 100 character limit for the following 3 questions: What fuels your passion for fitness?

Having worked hard to lose weight and overcome my physical limitations as a child, as well as being pretty sheltered-as the only child of a single working mom-I feel like my life has been a bit compensatory by experimenting with various non-team sports that are a more extreme or adventuresome. Maybe it is that I feel like I’m always making up for lost time, or now at my age, that the clock is now counting down and there are still more climbs, ultras, races, and new adventures to be had.

Tell us your favorite way to stay fit Honestly, hill repeats. I have a great, steep hill near my home where I can lace up my running shoes, walk out my door and run it. If it’s snowy, I lace up my boots, heave up my 40# makeshift ruck (my alpine backpack filled with water softener salt bags) and hike it. I plug in my favorite podcasts and enjoy the view of the bay, being in nature, and waving at my neighbors, who think I’m nuts. I find it efficient, a de facto nature bath, and it really stimulates my creativity and Zone 5 & VO2 max.

What would you do with $20,000?

Not to virtue signal, but I would donate it. I have funded two scholarships and one grant for mental health services to one of my alma maters thus far. I also founded and run a nonprofit (all volunteer/pro bono, myself included) where we support various projects-in particular, two hospitals and a kindergarten we started in Tanzania-after meeting a man who would become our in-country partner when I was on a Seven Summits climb of Kili. Honest, the funds could go directly to those projects.
