Am 23. September 2017 besuchte ich das Naturhistorisches Museum in Muscat, Sultanat Oman. Das Museum untersteht dem omanischen Ministerium für Erbe und Kultur. Ich sah einen ausgestopften Arabischen Leoparden (Panthera pardus nimr Hemprich und Ehrenberg, 1833).

Der Arabische Leopard (Panthera pardus nimr Hemprich und Ehrenberg, 1833) / The Arabian Leopard / ‫اﻟﻨﻤﺮ اﻟﻌﺮﺒﻲ‬ Obschon der Leopard (Panthera pardus) seit Jahrhunderten vom Menschen massiv verfolgt wird, hat er eines der weitesten Verbreitungsgebiete aller Landraubtiere. Dies hat damit zu tun, dass er enorm anpassungsfähig ist und beinahe überall ein Auskommen findet, wo es genügend Beutetiere und Deckung gibt. Allerdings hat selbst sein "Durchhaltevermögen" Grenzen, und Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – ISSN 0178-6288 – Volume 41 – Number 223 – July 2023

3 darum kommt er in manchen Bereichen seines Verbreitungsgebiets bloss noch in inselartigen Restbeständen vor. Dies gilt auch für die Arabische Halbinsel im Allgemeinen und das im Südosten derselben gelegene Sultanat Oman im Speziellen (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Variabel im Aussehen: Innerhalb der Familie der Katzen (Felidae) gehört der Leopard zur sieben Arten umfassenden Unterfamilie der Großkatzen (Pantherinae). Dort wird er zusammen mit dem Löwen (Panthera leo), dem Tiger (Panthera tigris) und dem Jaguar (Panthera onca) der Gattung der Eigentlichen Großkatzen (Panthera) zugeordnet. Er ist durchschnittlich der kleinste der vier Vettern, und er ist der variabelste hinsichtlich Körpergröße und Fellzeichnung. Ausnehmend große Männchen im südlichen Afrika oder in den Bergregionen Zentralasiens können ein Gewicht von nahezu 100 Kilogramm und eine Kopfrumpflänge von beinahe 2 Metern aufweisen. Auf der Arabischen Halbinsel wiegen die männlichen Leoparden hingegen selten mehr als 30 Kilogramm und sind höchstens 1,3 Meter lang, während die Weibchen wie überall noch deutlich kleiner sind und sogar nur rund 20 Kilogramm wiegen (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Wie die Körpergröße ist auch die Musterung der Leopardenfelle sehr verschiedenartig. Zwar sind die Flecken auf dem Rücken normalerweise zu Rosetten angeordnet. Einzelne Leoparden besitzen aber - ähnlich wie Jaguare große Ringflecken mit Tupfen in der Mitte. Andere wiederum sind - ähnlich wie Geparde (Acinonyx jubatus) - dicht mit vielen Tupfen übersät. Ferner ist die Grundfarbe der Leopardenfelle sehr variabel: Die Palette reicht von Tieren mit weißlichem Grundton bis hin zu den bekannten Schwärzlingen, die im Volksmund "Schwarze Panther" heissen (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Immerhin zeigen die Individuen eines regionalen Bestands eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit hinsichtlich der Färbung und Musterung ihres Fells. So weisen die Leoparden der Arabischen Halbinsel im Allgemeinen eine sehr helle Grundfärbung auf, und sie haben auf der Oberseite verhältnismäßig kleine, weit auseinander stehende Flecken und Rosetten, während ihre Unterseite nahezu weiß und verhältnismäßig stark getupft ist (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Aufgrund der großen Variabilität hinsichtlich Größe, Musterung und Färbung sind in der Vergangenheit mehr als dreißig Leopardenunterarten beschrieben worden. 4 allerdings für unsinnig. Da nämlich keine zwei Leopardenfelle "tupfengleich" sind, fällt es in der Praxis schwer, die Unterarten tatsächlich auseinander zu halten. Findet sich beispielsweise in einem Museum ein Leopardenfell ohne Herkunftsangabe, so vermag kein Experte dasselbe einer bestimmten Unterart zuzuordnen. Molekularbiologische Untersuchungen haben diese Ansicht inzwischen gestützt: Sie haben ergeben, dass die Unterschiede zwischen den meisten Unterarten vernachläßigbar gering und vielfach keineswegs konstant sind. "Echte" Leopardenunterarten gibt es wahrscheinlich nur vier oder fünf (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

5 Auch die auf der Arabischen Halbinsel heimischen Leoparden wurden im Zuge der genannten Aufsplitterung als eine eigene Unterart namens Arabischer Leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) beschrieben (wobei "nimr" ‫ ﻧﻤﺮ‬der arabische Begriff für Leopard ist). Unlängst wurde nun aufgrund der neuen molekularbiologischen Erkenntniße der Vorschlag gemacht, dass alle Leopardenbestände des westlichen Asiens zu einer einzigen Unterart namens (Panthera pardus saxicolor) zusammengefaßt werden sollten (wobei "saxicolor" aus dem Lateinischen stammt und felsenfarbig bedeutet). Diesem Ansinnen widersetzen sich jedoch die meisten arabischen Zoologen. Gemäß ihrer Einschätzung unterscheiden sich die Leoparden Arabiens ausreichend von den übrigen Leoparden Westasiens, um als eine separate Unterart eingestuft zu werden (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

6 In Berg- und Hügelländern heimisch: Insgesamt kommt der Leopard in über achtzig Ländern Afrikas und Asiens vor.

Vom Kap der Guten Hoffnung bis nach Sibirien und von der Wüste Sahara bis zu den tropischen Regenwäldern der Malaiischen Halbinsel erstreckt sich sein riesenhaftes Verbreitungsgebiet. Ja, es umfasst sogar die Inseln Sri Lanka und Java. Man findet den Leoparden von unterhalb des Meeresspiegels in Palästina (im Bereich des Toten Meeres im Jordangraben) bis in Höhen von über 5000 Metern ü.M. Tatsächlich hat man 1926 auf dem Kilimandscharo, in einer Höhe von 5638 Metern ü.M., einen toten Leoparden gefunden – eingefroren (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Auf der Arabischen Halbinsel bewohnt der Leopard zur Hauptsache die im Westen und Süden gelegenen Berg- und Hügelländer. Sein Vorkommen reicht von der Naqab (Negev)-Wüste in Palästina über das Hedschas- und das AsirGebirge in Saudi-Arabien südwärts bis in den Jemen und von da ostwärts über Oman bis zu den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten. Im extrem dürren Binnenland der Halbinsel, insbesondere in der Großen Arabischen Wüste, vermag auch er nicht zu überleben (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

7 In Oman kam der Leopard einst vor allem auf der gebirgigen MusandamHalbinsel im Norden des Landes, im Hadschar-Gebirge im Umfeld der Hauptstadt Muskat und in der von Bergen geprägten Provinz Dhofar im Süden des Landes vor. Wissenschaftliche Erhebungen, welche in den 1980er-Jahren durchgeführt wurden, zeigten, dass er im Hadschar-Gebirge leider ausgestorben, auf der Musandam-Halbinsel äußerst selten geworden, aber in der Provinz Dhofar noch in einem gesunden Bestand vorhanden war. In Dhofar fanden sich Leoparden schwergewichtig im Bereich des Dschebel (Jebel) Samhan (dschebel = arab. für Berg, Gebirge). Dieses bis 2100 Meter hohe Kalksteinmassiv erhebt sich direkt hinter der Küstenebene und besteht zur Hauptsache aus einem hügeligen Hochplateau, welches von tiefen Schluchten zerfurcht ist (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Wie der Rest des Landes ist der Dschebel Samhan starken Temperaturschwankungen unterworfen. Im Sommer klettern die Temperaturen tagsüber häufig auf über 45 Grad Celsius, während sie im Winter nachtsüber oft auf fast null Grad Celsius fallen. Regen fällt nur spärlich, dennoch weist die Hochebene eine dichte, dornige, vielfach undurchdringliche Pflanzendecke auf, wobei Akazienbäume (Acacia spp.), Myrrhensträucher (Commiphora spp.) und Weihrauchbäume (Boswellia sacra) die häufigsten Gehölzarten sind. Fließ- und Stillgewässer fehlen vollständig, doch gibt es in den Schluchten vereinzelte Sickerquellen, aus denen die meisten Tiere ihr Trinkwasser beziehen. Nebst dem Arabischen Leoparden beherbergt der Dschebel Samhan an größeren Säugetieren den Wolf (Canis lupus), den Rotfuchs (Vulpes vulpes), den Afghanfuchs (Vulpes cana), die Streifenhyäne (Hyaena hyaena), die Wildkatze (Felis silvestris), die Arabische Gazelle (Gazella gazella cora, ehem. Gazella gazella arabica) und den Nubischen Steinbock (Capra ibex nubiana). Die überraschende Artenvielfalt - auch hinsichtlich Kleintieren - macht das Massiv zu einem der bedeutendsten Wildtier-Rückzugsgebiete im Nahen Osten. Menschliche Ansiedlungen gibt es im Bereich des Dschebel Samhan keine. Auch sonst bleibt das unwirtliche und schwer zugängliche Berggebiet vor menschlichen Störungen weit gehend verschont. Einzig Weihrauch-Zapfer halten sich zeitweise im Gebiet auf (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Die Leoparden des Dschebel Samhan sind im Verlauf der letzten zehn Jahre eingehend untersucht worden, zuerst vom Fotografen David Willis, dann vom Biologen Andrew Spalton. Wir können uns deshalb ein recht gutes Bild von der Lebensweise dieser Katzen machen. Im Rahmen der Studien wurden Kameras eingesetzt, welche von den Leoparden selbst - per Trittkontakt - ausgelöst wurden, ferner wurde eine kleine Anzahl Individuen mit GPSSenderhalsbändern versehen, so dass ihre Streifzüge per Satellit verfolgt werden konnten, und selbstverständlich wurden der Kot und sämtliche anderen Spuren Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – ISSN 0178-6288 – Volume 41 – Number 223 – July 2023

8 der Tiere ausgewertet. Die Feldstudien werden heute hauptsächlich durch Hadi Musalam al Hikmani weitergeführt, einem jungen Omaner, der in der Nähe des Dschebel Samhan wohnt (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Oft am späteren Nachmittag unterwegs: Wie alle Leoparden führen die Arabischen Leoparden im Bereich des Dschebel Samhan ein einzelgängerisches Leben. Jedes Männchen und jedes Weibchen streift in einem eigenen Wohngebiet umher. Diese Wohngebiete sind aufgrund des dürren Lebensraums und der entsprechend dünnen Beutetierbestände überaus groß: Sie bemessen sich im Durchschnitt auf weit über hundert Quadratkilometer. Die Wohngebiete benachbarter Individuen überlappen stark, und die Tiere benützen in den Überlappungszonen oft die gleichen Pfade.

Dennoch kommt es so gut wie nie zu direkten Begegnungen, denn die Individuen gehen einander geflissentlich aus dem Weg (wobei ihnen ihre leistungsfähigen Augen gute Dienste leisten) und kommunizieren nur via Duftmarken miteinander (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Leoparden sind meisterhafte Beutegreifer, welche so ziemlich alles zu erlegen vermögen, was ihnen über den Weg läuft - andere Großraubtiere natürlich ausgenommen. Das Spektrum nachweislich erlegter Beutetiere reicht beispielsweise in Afrika von ein paar Gramm schweren Pillendreher-Käfern (Scarabaeus spp.) bis hin zu erwachsenen männlichen Elenantilopen (Taurotragus oryx), welche gegen 900 Kilogramm wiegen. Allerdings überfallen selbst groß gewachsene Leoparden selten Beutetiere, welche mehr als etwa 70 Kilogramm wiegen, ja sie stellen sogar vorzugsweise Tieren mit einem Gewicht von weniger Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – ISSN 0178-6288 – Volume 41 – Number 223 – July 2023

9 als 20 Kilogramm nach, wenn solche vorhanden sind. Die Gefahr einer Verletzung durch sich wehrende Opfer wird auf diese Weise erheblich gesenkt (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Typischerweise betätigen sich die Leoparden als Pirschjäger. Sie schleichen sich lautlos an ein Beutetier an, nutzen dabei jeden Fels, jeden Baum und jeden Busch als Deckung - und stürzen sich schließlich unvermittelt mit wenigen kraftvollen Sätzen auf ihr Opfer. Nicht immer gehen sie jedoch so "systematisch" vor. In Palästina wurde einst ein erwachsenes Weibchen bei der Jagd auf Klippschliefer (Procavia capensis) beobachtet. Es suchte nicht nach solchen, um sie dann anzuschleichen, sondern sprang einfach immer wieder ungezielt über große Felsbrocken - bis es schließlich per Zufall eine Klippschliefergruppe überraschte und tatsächlich ein junges Männchen zu erlegen vermochte. Die Untersuchung des Kots der im Bereich des Dschebel Samhan heimischen Leoparden hat ergeben, dass dort Steinböcke, Klippschliefer, Gazellen, Stachelschweine und Feldhühner die Hauptbeutetiere bilden (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

In den meisten Bereichen seines Artverbreitungsgebiets ist der Leopard ein nachtaktives Tier, das den Tag in einem sicheren Unterschlupf oder auf einem Baum verschläft und erst in der Abenddämmerung munter wird. Die alte Vermutung, dass dieser Aktivitätsrhythmus zur Hauptsache eine Reaktion auf die Bejagung durch den Menschen ist, wurde durch die selbst auslösenden Kameras im abgeschiedenen Dschebel Samhan eindrücklich untermauert: Die dortigen Leoparden ließen sich ebenso oft am Tag ablichten wie in der Nacht.

Am aktivsten waren sie am späteren Nachmittag, zwischen 15 und 16 Uhr. Dies ist zwar die heißeste Zeit des Tages, doch in den Schluchten, wo die Leoparden mehrheitlich auf die Pirsch gehen, ist es dann bereits angenehm schattig.

Außerdem bewegen sich die Katzen bei der Pirsch ja äußerst behutsam und erzeugen keine nennenswerte Muskelwärme, welche ihren Körper zusätzlich aufheizen würde. Vor allem aber ist dies die Zeit, da die Beutetiere vorzugsweise ruhen und darum weniger aufmerksam sind als sonst (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Restbestand 80 bis 300 Individuen: Niemand weiss genau, wie viele Leoparden in Oman überleben. Die Fachleute schätzen, dass auf der ganzen Arabischen Halbinsel nur noch zwischen 80 und 300 Individuen existieren und dass der Großteil davon im Jemen heimisch ist.

Ferner sind sie überzeugt, dass der Bestand weiter schrumpft. Die Verminderung der Beutetierbestände durch den Menschen mag hierbei eine gewisse Rolle Gazelle : The Palestinian Biological Bulletin – ISSN 0178-6288 – Volume 41 – Number 223 – July 2023

11 spielen. Ohne Zweifel stellt aber die direkte, meistens illegale Bejagung der Leoparden die Hauptursache für den Bestandsschwund dar. Wie überall im Artverbreitungsgebiet werden die Leoparden auf der Arabischen Halbinsel einerseits als mögliche Viehräuber und andererseits ihres wertvollen Fells wegen bejagt. Oftmals scheuen die Jäger keine Mühe, um einen Leoparden zu erlegen, der sich in die Nähe menschlicher Siedlungen vorgewagt hat. Eine Ausbreitung der Restbestände über die Grenzen ihrer verbleibenden Rückzugsgebiete hinweg ist deshalb so gut wie unmöglich (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Immerhin scheint der Leopardenbestand im Bereich des Dschebel Samhan gegenwärtig einigermassen sicher zu sein. Das ganze Massiv wurde im Juni 1997 durch einen Erlaß des Sultans zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt, und zwar hauptsächlich wegen seiner Leoparden. Das Reservat weist eine Fläche von 4500 Quadratkilometern auf und beherbergt wie eingangs erwähnt eine vielgestaltige Fauna. Es ist darum durchaus in der Lage, einem überlebensfähigen Bestand der eleganten Raubkatzen auf längere Sicht eine Heimat zu bieten (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

12 Formen: Die erwachsenen Männchen weisen eine Kopfrumpflänge von höchstens 1,3 Metern auf und wiegen selten mehr als 30 Kilogramm; die Weibchen sind sogar noch deutlich kleiner und wiegen nur rund 20 Kilogramm (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Innerhalb seines Verbreitungsgebiets bewohnt der Arabische Leopard vornehmlich Berg- und Hügelländer. Diese Aufnahme (oben) stammt aus dem Dschebel Samhan, einem bis 2100 Meter hohen Kalksteinmassiv im Süden Omans, das seit 1997 unter Schutz steht und einen kleinen, gut untersuchten Leopardenbestand beherbergt (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Wie die meisten Katzenarten sind die Arabischen Leoparden typische Einzelgänger. Jedes Männchen und jedes Weibchen streift für sich allein in einem großflächigen Wohngebiet umher. Einzig zum Zweck der Fortpflanzung finden sie jeweils für kurze Zeit zu Paaren zusammen (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Je Wurf kommen beim Arabischen Leoparden zumeist zwei oder drei Junge zur Welt. Im Alter von ungefähr zwei Monaten wagen sie sich erstmals aus ihrem sicheren Versteck hervor. 13 zusammen und erlernen in dieser Zeit anhand ihres Beispiels die Kunst des Beutegreifens (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).

Um die Leoparden im Süden Omans zu fotografieren, wurden Kameras mit Trittkontakt-Auslösern eingesetzt. Dieses Individuum liess sich vier Mal kurz nacheinander ablichten - und sprang jedes Mal erschreckt in die Luft.

Offensichtlich gibt es auch unter den Leoparden solche mit dem Hang zu Neugier und Nervenkitzel ... (Kappeler, 2004; Khalaf, Juni 2005, Juli 2006, Juli 2007, September 2008, July 2023).
