Sparrow’s Lodge The activity of the month “Sparrow’s Lodge” was based on recycling of old card board box, newspapers etc. The students were asked to utilize waste resources. Objective: The purpose of this craft work was to convey a message to everybody that we should
conserve nature. The model was not only a simple work of art but work of creativity and intelligence as it brings art to life. The model besides providing entertainment and recreation played a more significant role by providing the ideal home for the birds which in many cities in India is becoming rare and the population of the birds is going down in search of habitat. The purpose of this activity was to highlight the creativity of each child. The students enjoyed the whole activity with zeal and zest. The students performed the activity with some assistance provided by the teachers and gave different colours to their respective bird nests. By participating in such kind of an activity, the students developed crafting and social skills. This also helped them to improve and understand different shapes, textures and dimensions. Historical Fact: It is said that in the past the people of China sometimes killed the birds (i.e. sparrows) as they believed that they eat away the grain from the crop plants. But in the next season to their astonishment they found that the larvae and caterpillar heavily ate the seeds as well as the leaves and that it was not the sparrow that ate the grains but these were “enemy insects” and their larvae. Hence, a very immediate and intelligent move was made by the Chinese government to bring these sparrows back.
Taming the Tables The objective of this activity was to change the abstract Mathematical learning to concrete learning. As the children learn better with what they touch, feel and observe, hands-on experience was emphasized. It was an interactive session where the teacher and the student were engaged in a lot of hand-on activities. The activity proved to be beneficial as the student was reinforced with the concept of multiplication. Playing games is a fun way to increase student engagement for performing activities. This game consisted of six sets of cards for the multiplication tables of 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 printed in different colours and two dices were used. The practice game helped the child to automatize tables. Student rolled the dice and tried to find an equivalent game card. The student loved this game as he had to compete with the teacher to get each card correct. However, the best part of this game was that the student was exposed to different representations of multiplication facts for deeper understanding. For instance, if a student is working on the table of 9, the dices are rolled and the number which comes up on the dice is multiplied by 9 or if the student is working on the concept of squares, each time the dice is rolled the number which comes up on the dice is multiplied by itself. Players take turns while rolling the dice and the first one to give an answer gains a point. This game requires an active participation of the child and he gets a chance to learn at the same time. Learning multiplication tables is more effective when we make the learning process fun. There are a variety of games that require a very little effort to play but at the same time it helps the student learn and retain the multiplication tables.
Experiment on Air
1. Air Exerts Pressure. 2. Air Pressure can move liquids. Objective: To familiarize the students about the fact that the air exerts pressure and can move liquids. The student was able to learn with concrete learning. While performing an activity/ experiment, he was given cardboard, a vessel full of water. The student was asked to cover the vessel with a thick card- board with his right hand. The child then holds the tumbler with the other hand and carefully turns the tumbler upside down. This experiment helped the student to understand that air exerts an upward pressure on the card-board and so the card-board and water do not fall. In another experiment, the child was given a dropper and a mug full of water to show that air pressure can move liquids. The student was asked to press the liquid into the dropper. The student dipped an open end of dropper into the liquid and was asked to press the rubber bulb. The air from the tube of the dropper is forced out and the air pressure inside the tube is reduced. The outside pressure presses the liquid into the tube of the dropper. The liquid contained in the dropper can now be released. Activity of burning test: The main objective of this test was to make the students understand the different properties of different fabrics i.e. Cotton, Nylon, Polyester, Rayon, Silk, Wool. In this activity, students were given different fabrics, candle and a match-box. With assistance, the students burnt different fabrics which on burning smelled differently and they found different residual material during the test which helped them recognize different fabrics. Performing this activity, they were also able to differentiate between the textures of fabrics.
Activity of Natural Environment: Objectives: 1. to help the students know the four domains of natural environment.
Lithosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere Biosphere 2. To familiarize the students with the functioning of each domain of the natural environment. Materials required: Transparent glass, Rice, beans of different colours The students were taught the natural environment through concrete approach of learning. This helps them to grasp the topic clearly. The students were asked to fill the glass with rice and coloured beans to differentiate the four domains of the natural environment. It was followed by the labelling of different domains. Further importance and functioning of each domain was explained to the students. This helps them to comprehend the concept clearly and quickly.
Jingle Bell Threading The objective of this activity was to improve the fine motor skills of the student. Fine motor involves the strengthening of the smaller muscles to perform daily activities. This jingle bell threading activity was simple and interesting. It required no preparation making it an quick and easy activity for toddlers and preschoolers. The sound of jingle bells made it more interesting. The child was supposed to simply press the pointy end of the skewer into a Styrofoam. On the back of each jingle bell, there was a slot for threading, usually ribbon or a string, where the skewer fitted just perfectly. The child simply slided the jingle bells on the skewer and listened to the bells jingle as they slid down. The student did jingle threading activity very nicely. The students enjoyed the activity, when they heard the sound of the bells, they paid more attention towards the activity. While putting one bell in a skewer, they got excited to put another one. They enjoyed a lot while doing the activity. They showed great interest and excitement while doing the activity. Along with the fine motor, this activity developed the pincer grasp of the student.
Loop Activity. The objective of this activity was to improve the eye hand coordination of the child. Eye hand coordination involves simultaneous use of hands and eyes. This activity used information that eyes perceived to guide our hands to carry out the movements. Eye-hand coordination is a complex cognitive ability, as it unites the visual skill and motor skill. This activity was simple; the student passed the string through the loops embedded onto the cardboard. The loops were located in a zigzag manner. There were 4- 6 loops embedded. While passing through each loop the child was keen to pass it to the next, higher loop. Upon the completion of the activity, there was a great feeling of achievement on the child’s face. It is a great starting point for student to develop motor skills, eye hand coordination and concentration. Student felt a sense of achievement after completing the activity.
Paper Roll Dragon Craft
The objective of this activity was to increase the attention span of the student. Attention span is the amount of time a person can spend on a given task without being distracted. This activity helped the student focus and retain attention on the given task which was the main objective of the activity. This paper roll dragon activity was quite entertaining for the students. When the teacher blew the paper dragon in front of the student, it looked like the flames were coming out of the mouth of the dragon and it amazed the student. The student was asked to blow the paper dragon. On seeing the flames coming out of the dragon’s mouth the student got really excited and wanted to blow it again and again. The student involved himself into this activity for more than eight minutes without any distraction.
Picture Theatre
The main objectives of this activity were: to inculcate the communication skills, to comprehend pictures, to develop simultaneous discrimination of pictures, to increase attention span, to built sentence structures, storytelling. The picture theatre activity was performed by one of our autistic child, which was actually designed to facilitate the main issue, prevailing in autistic individuals that is communication. This activity not only helped the student to visualize the pictures but also helped to built sentence structures. This activity helped the student to respond to "what do you see?" and thus letting the child to imagine according to his or her ability.
When you judge someone based on a diagnosis you miss out on their abilities, beauty and uniqueness. Our young artist, one of the illuminating star of our department namely Ahmad Shah, showed his abilities in art and painting on the computer. Ahmad is a special child who is very keen in making drawings of the things which he observes in his daily life. He has a sharp visual memory which can be seen by looking at his drawings. Ahmad showed these abilities on a touch screen laptop rather than a normal desktop.
