Frenkel’s Exercises The objective of Frenkel’s Exercise is to facilitate the restoration of posture, strength, balance and coordination. These exercises are used to bring back the rhythmic, smooth and coordinated movements. The exercises are performed in supine, sitting, 4 point kneeling, standing and walking. Each activity is performed slowly with the student using vision to carefully guide correct movement. These exercises require a high degree of mental concentration and effort. The exercise was modified for the child to incorporate weighted cuffs to increase the strength of his upper limb and lower limb muscles.
Articulation Therapy
We use speech trainer in order to correct the articulation errors and to stabilize the child’s voice, pitch and intonation. It helps the child to get audio, visual stimulation using different flash cards. It also helps to discriminate between different sounds using proper placement of headphones. Speech sample of particular student are recorded in order to make them aware about errors while playing the audio clip. Melody and music therapy are also given to the monotonous students. Healthy and Junk Food Activity: Food Tooth Crown Objective: To develop the concept of healthy and junk food and to make them aware of the fact that junk food causes tooth decay. Description: The topic was introduced through pictures as children are visual learners. The students were very happy during the activity and it was done with Hizer and Rehaan as they both are fond of junk food but after doing the activity, they started avoiding the junk food to some extent. They acquired the knowledge of healthy and junk food. During the session, Hizer asked me as to why we are doing the particular activity and why have I given them a healthy and decayed tooth depicting his critical thinking skill. I explained to the students why we are doing the particular activity and after that they did the activity with great enthusiasm and understanding. In-between the activity only Rehaan was prompted twice. The students did the activity by sorting Healthy and Unhealthy Food and then pasted the same on the Tooth Food Crown. Now, they have started to inculcate the concept in their daily lives.
SNOWMAN
Doing activities with children allows you to promote their reading and writing skills while having fun at the same time. The activity we did with our children was done in order to inculcate writing and reading skills. The activity was named “Name the snowman”. It is a perfect way for our children to practice their names through writing. It is a fun and an interactive way of learning their name and also name sequencing. The children developed great enthusiasm for reading and writing; they were also able to write with different colours and expand their understanding of the alphabets. The conversation was carried out throughout the session. Each child created his snowman’s face, hat first and there was a lot of creativity at play! They had hats, eyes, and so many more interesting creations. It’s always nice to see each child’s personality and individuality come across in activities like this. Personal snowman really helps the child stretch their imagination. The child matches their letter labelled pieces to the letters on the snowman. This is a great way to make letter identification fun. This name snowman craft turned out to be a blast for the kids and the teacher too! (ER) Purpose: To teach cutting skills. Objectives: organizational skills, hygiene, proper use and care of pointed objects, sitting posture, holding skills cutting skills, fine motor skills and bilateral coordination. Anyone who wants to cook — whether professionally or at home — needs to know how to use a knife. And that doesn’t just mean knowing how to cut various vegetables into various shapes, though that’s certainly a part of it. It also means knowing how to hold a knife and, equally importantly, how to hold the item you are cutting in a way that prevents you from hurting yourself. Learning how to hold and use a knife correctly will not only help you work more safely, but will also enable you to work faster, making you much more efficient in the kitchen.
The students were asked to get the French beans along with them. They were instructed about organizational skills before a few days when our very first activity of cleanliness and hygiene was done. So the students themselves did things like spreading the mat, putting utensils on mat, washing beans .The new demonstration that we gave was holding of knife, cutting vegetables and proper use of pointed objects. Students were demonstrated about the sitting posture and holding skills (holding knife and beans on plate). Further students started cutting the beans according to the given instructions. At the end they transferred the chopped beans to the bowls and after that cleaned their utensils and kept them back. By the end of the activity all our objectives were accomplished successfully. Visit to Dachigam national park Dachigam national park gives shelter to a multiple number of animals, variety of birds and plants thus transforms it into a photographer’s delight. The best way to explore the park is by walking or trekking. The S.E.N department of DPS Srinagar organised a trip with the permission from concerned authorities, to Dachigam for functional students of English Remedial and IT department which included a group of ten students accompanied by four teachers. The trip started at 11:00 am and concluded at 1:30 pm on Wednesday. As soon as students entered the gate they experienced a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The park is famous for its unique and diverse wildlife and bird species. The park contains the last viable Hangul population in the world. The students came across various types of wild plants, fruits and beautiful streams or waterfalls. The park consisted of plenty of broad leaf species, herbs and wild fruits like berries, cherries and plums. Some of our students tasted a few wild fruits which added to their excitement and enthusiasm. The animals and birds students came across were common leopard (female), a black Asiatic bear and a bird –Magpie. The care takers briefed out information about these animals to our students and many of our students
asked questions related to the animals and the park. All the students were very eager and delighted to click pictures with different kinds of animals. The authority of Dachigam even made one of our students to feel the leopard with the help of his cane. Then students headed towards the Trout fish rearing unit set up in the national park to promote pisciculture in Jammu and Kashmir where they were made to see different types of fishes. Students kept on asking questions related to the animals and plant species which showed their curiosity related to the place. The entire visit was quite exciting and fruitful to the students as far as their learning was concerned. The trip was a firsthand experience of learning through adventure and fun.
Parent Teacher’s Interaction SEN department recently held a PTI (Parents Teachers Interaction). It was a very productive event and well received. These events are vital for a healthy relationship between the staff and parents as such interactions form a strong base of understanding and trust, which are essential ingredients for educating and caring for children with special needs. These meetings are not only helpful for educators and therapists but help the parents know what is being done, in order to provide SEN children with the best possible care. It also provides a comfortable platform for the parents to communicate their concerns. The esteemed principal of our school was also present in the event which certainly encouraged the SEN staff. It was heartening to see the parents turning up in good numbers. They were very enthusiastic about sharing their thoughts and feedback. The primary objective of PTI was to provide a platform to parents and staff where they could exchange their knowledge and experiences. Keeping this very concern in mind, an elaborate presentation on dietary needs of special needs children was conducted by one of the SEN staff members. The highlight of the event was an activity by even SEN where parents were asked to share one positive feedback regarding their child. It was encouraging to see how enthusiastically parents participated and shared the improvements they saw in their particular child. In future more and more such interaction programs would be done with different agendas and purposes.
Spice plate To make the student familiar with different types of spices using texture, smell and taste, which will in turn develop their tactile, olfactory and gustatory sense. The activity spice plate was done with the VI class students in order to make them familiar with different kinds of spices which we use in our daily lives. The students taste and smell the spices available during the activity and paste them on a sheet and label them by pasting the Braille slips with their respective names on them. This activity not only covers a portion of their syllabus but also helps them in the long run by developing their senses.
Number Name The student was given some chits of letters that can make the number name "fifteen�. The chits are aligned haphazardly. The teacher makes him understand twice by dragging the letters in a sequence. The teacher puts them back in a random manner. This time the child is allowed to do the same. Once he succeeds in doing so, he is asked to paste them on a chart or white sheet in a proper way. At last, the child copies the made number name on the provided chart.
Maze Chaze
This activity was done keeping in view various objectives of making the student to increase his attention span, colour identification and eye hand coordination. The Student is asked to take any particular coloured wooden bead across a particular path only after the teacher takes the same coloured bead first. As soon as the student tries to get the same colored beads at one point he has to pass through various hurdles where sometimes he will face the track been blocked by some other color bead or path getting ended. During this time, we see that the student tries to focus which helps in increasing his attention span. He also gets to identify the colours by bringing the same ones together. As student keeps on having the track of beads we see that he uses his hands and eyes simultaneously thus improving his eye hand coordination as well.
Ball drop walk
The Objective of the activity is to build balance and coordination. Balance system in child’s brain is a fundamental piece for higher learning and problem solving. Balance and coordination is essential for supporting child’s vision system for reading, posture, attention to listen and retain information from the teacher. Ball drop walk is one of the most favorite balance coordination activity student likes to do. For this activity we need paper roll, balls and a tub. First student is instructed how to hold paper roll and ball on it, so that he can stabilize himself. Then he is asked to walk and drop the ball in a tub. He starts to walk according to the given instructions. Initially, he has difficulty in balancing ball on paper roll but he tries again and again. He does not get demotivated instead he gets more focused and concentrates on holding the paper roll. At the end he drops the ball in a tub and jumps in joy. Then the child repeats the same many times and enjoys. Thus this activity works in a great way for building balance and coordination and is super fun for kids.
Target Golf Target Golf is creative indoor activity which is used for increasing attention span, eye hand coordination and great way for students to work on gross motor skill .The material required for this activity is carton box, ball and plastic hammer or bat. While doing this activity all students who are struggling to build attention span, gross motor skills as well as eye hand coordination had great fun and was a pleasure time for them. It is very beneficial activity for the students to develop their skills and the child loves to do this activity.
Counting Wheel Activity
Objectives: To learn counting with objects, to create number recognition, to enhance the fine motor skills, to increase the eye hand coordination. The activity counting wheel was done with one of the student of autism unit in order to learn counting with objects which will help the student in daytoday life. This activity not only helped the student to learn counting but also helped to enhance his fine motor skills and eye hand coordination. It helped in the number recognition which was written on the clips.
Finding Factors
Before starting the activity, the concept of factors was given through the anchor chart. Then the teacher taught the child how to find the factors of given number. The student was supposed to find the factors of number 10. He took 10 pennies and distributed equally 10 pennies into group of 1 which showed 1 is factor of number 10. Then the student distributed 10 pennies into group of 2 it was successfully distributed then student wrote 2Ă—5= 10, after that student distributed 10 pennies into group of 3, it wasn't distributed equally so 3 is not the factor of 10. The process continued till we reached number 10. This is how the student grasped the concept of finding factors and enjoyed the activity.
POST EID ACTIVITY
Objectives: Cutting in shape, Coloring/scribbling, Punching, tying a knot, Sequencing, use of thread and string, shape and size concept, Fine motor skills, Eye hand coordination. Procedure: Students were provided sheets with stars of different sizes. Students were further instructed how to cut the shapes properly without cutting edges of stars. With our assistance they tried to cut the stars in shape properly. Further no instruction for coloring was given. Color selection was done on own and students continued to do it themselves. In order to make the stars more attractive they made use of glitter. After that the students were asked to punch the stars at two extreme ends and were provided the string/thread so as they can pass the thread across the stars and tie a knot at each end so as to make it more secure and give it a shape of hanging star string. After that they hanged the strings in the classroom.
Patterns of rural settlements
Objectives To make the child familiar with the Patterns of rural settlements To help the child to identify five patterns of rural settlements Materials required: General teaching aids, beans, fevicol and chart In this activity the student was asked to draw patterns of rural settlements on a white chart. He was further asked to paste the beans over the drawn patterns. This concrete approach made the lesson interesting. The child was actively participating throughout the whole activity. He was fully involved and was also able to identify the five patterns of rural settlements.
Human Rights
Objectives To familiarize the child with the Human Rights Materials required: General teaching aids, chart paper and poster colors An activity on Human Rights was done with the help of poster colours and a chart paper. The child was asked to write the Human rights For All by applying poster colour on the fingers. She was further asked to write it with the coloured fingers and then sprinkle the colour over the written portion on the chart paper. The main aim of the activity was to familiarize the student with the Human Rights. The child was given the information regarding the Human Rights for all. She was further told that the Human Rights Day is held on 10th December every year to promote the rights and freedoms of people across the globe.
Data Handling The word "Data Handling" might sound dry but it's an area of Mathematics with an exciting range of skills at its core including investigating, gathering, presenting, and examining information. Not only is it a practical topic that can be used across the curriculum, unlike other areas of Mathematics, it also has great potential to brighten up your classroom displays. This week we have a spread of resources about tally tables, bar graphs, pie charts, pictogram to help teach students, with a range of abilities.
From pictograms to line graphs, children learn a lot about collecting, organizing and presenting data in Mathematics. Pictograph helps children understand the way the information is presented in each format, they will be asked various questions, for example: ‘Which is the most popular fruit in the class?’, ‘How many children like dogs?’, ‘How many buses were seen in half an hour?’, ‘Which is the least popular sport in the year group?’. A good question to test children with when looking at data. ‘How many more children like bananas than grapes? The best way to get children really involved in data handling is to encourage them to find out their own information and show them how to record this accurately, be it in a list, table or tally chart. Teachers then demonstrate how to convert this information into a pictogram and vice versa.
The activity included Montessori counting sticks that were used to represent data. A small bar graph was made using these Montessori sticks and the student were asked to answer some questions example Maximum and minimum marks scored by a student.
Taste buds:
Objective: To make the student familiarize about the different taste buds that help us to taste things: sweet, sour, Salty and Bitter. The student will learn that the sense of taste helps protect us from eating spoiled or poisonous foods. The student was able to learn with concrete learning. While performing an activity, he was given cardboard, poster colours and small chart paper. He was asked to prepare the model of tongue with assistance. He himself mixes the colour for the model of tongue and recognized the different taste buds.He carefully labeled the different taste buds. This activity helps the student to understand that taste buds are sensory organs that are found on tongue and allow you to experience different tastes
Micro Wave Cooking:
Objectives: The main objective of this activity was to make the students understand about the basic method of micro –wave cooking. Identify safe microwave cooking techniques. He was made to be able independent and self -sufficient. In this activity, student was taught through concrete approach of learning. He was asked to marinate the chicken with different spices. With assistance, the student put the chicken piece in the micro-wave keeping the temperature of oven 180 degree Celsius. He observed that with the help of an electromagnetic rays, the heat was generated which leads to temperature rise that makes chicken piece cooked. It helps him to recognize the difference between frying and microwave cooking. Performing this activity helps him to comprehend the concept clearly and quickly.
Oral Motor The term oral-motor refers to the use and function of the muscles of the face (lips, tongue, and jaw). For chewing and swallowing, children need to have the right amount of strength, range of motion, and coordination. When a child has limited movement, coordination, and/or strength of the lips, tongue and/or jaw, eating is difficult. The main function of oral-motor exercises is to improve strength, range of motion, and coordination of the lips, tongue, and jaw.
Dress pocket vowel
The Dress pocket vowel activity is great activity to teach short vowel sounds and reinforce them to match the pictures with the related sounds, not only can this activity be used during small group instructions ,theself checking features make this an awesome literacy centre activity too. Procedure: - First we have to make a dress then we make a little pockets with color papers then the student will say the sound and name the picture ,decide which vowel is contained in the word or picture and then they put that picture in the right pocket sound and she/he matches it .so it’s a very simple activity to read how to match vowels, and they will enjoy as it’s a beautiful dress.
Farm animal world
This is an activity to represent farm animals, the common farm animals, what they do and all that facts they should know about farm animals this activity is also used for memory game using farm animal illustration. in this activity children can also share therefavorite farm animal .This activity can also be used for imitation games ,children can move and sound like farm animals that could be fun for them . Material Required :- Flash cards of farm animals, cardboard paper, grass, yarn ,corn(farm animal food),container. Procedure :- First we have to cut the cardboard piece paste the boundries and gather all the objects on the cardboard sheet (grass, animal food, shelter) then randomly select animal and have children participate fully and give information about the animal needed and let children know all the facts they should know about the farm animals by showing pictures one by one the pictures later will be used as memory game and while imitating the sound of farm animals children will definitely enjoy.
TechKnow 2018 “Technology has forever changed the world we live in. We're online, in one way or another, all day long. Our phones and computers have become reflections of our personalities, our interests, and our identities. They hold much that is important to us. “ Techknow was a two-day workshop organized by Delhi Public School Srinagar every year. This year Techknow workshops were organized on 19th to 20th August 2018, in which 5 students from SEN department participated and enrolled in the Robotics workshop. In robotics workshop students where given basic introduction of different electronic components such as capacitors, resistors, sensors as well as different type of IC’s (Integrated Circuits), at the same time students were told about different programmable boards which are used in robotic manufacturing. It was nice to see that the trainer of the workshop was a student from 11th class of our school, who introduced different sensors of quadcopter (drone)to students such as GPS sensor, sound sensor and temperature sensor. On the second day, students were introduced to Quadcopter workshop where speakers had come all across from Mumbai, who introduced students to different types of motors and equipment related to the quadcopter. It was a great experience to see that they taught students with some basics of C++ object-oriented programming and compiled some programs as well. After lunch, students were provided with a chance to assemble quadcopter (drone). We were also asked to download plout drone application on our mobiles which was used to fly drowns. It was quite evident that students were enjoying at peak and were taking interest in the drone designing.
At last, SEN would like to thank our I.T coordinator of school Mr.Ehsan who organised such mega event.
Teacher of the month August SEN department feels immensely proud and pleased to announce Miss Iffat Hassan as ‘Teacher of the Month’ for August. Miss Iffat has been an example of dedication, punctuality and humility. She is working with early intervention students. The teacher is dedicated to work hard and displays politeness towards students, parents and colleagues.Students feel involved during the sessions as the lessons are always well planned and sequenced.She is punctual to the school and follows her deadlines in time.She also executes extra responsibilities with concern and willingness. This award has been constituted this year i.e. 2018 by the SEN department. It is a recognition of the great effort put by the teacher to enhance the teaching learning process at SEN. The necessity of this endeavor arises from the fact that teaching is one of the most complicated jobs today. It demands a broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, and standards; enthusiasm, a caring attitude, and a love of learning; knowledge of discipline and classroom management techniques; and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. With all these qualities required, it’s no wonder that it is hard to find great teachers. Teachers have a very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. With this responsibility comes great pride and joy. Therefore, all teachers should strive to reach the level of a “good teacher.” A good teacher can be defined as someone who always pushes students to want to do their best while at the same time trying to make learning interesting as well as creative. A positive or negative influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life of a child. Teachers, especially at the elementary level, must be very creative with their teaching styles. Not every child learns the same way, nor are they interested in the same things. It is thus imperative to make a sustained effort towards excellence and motivating the teachers to rise to the challenge. The award is one such small step by the school that hopes to make a lasting effect.
