ART COMPETITION: An art competition was organized by ‘WHITE GLOBE’. It was an Autism awareness program designed to spread awareness among the people. It was held on 19th May 2018, where children from all over the state were participating. Our school was one of the participants in the competition and twenty-three students from our school represented DPS which included three students from the SEN department as well. The venue of the competition was ‘Volunteer Medicate Society, Bemina’. Special guests from Kashmir University were invited to judge the competition and reward them. These judges are renowned artists of the valley and the event included a number of activities including pottery. A student from SEN, Ibrahim Viqar, was one of the winners and made us proud by achieving second position in the competition. He was awarded with a trophy and a piano.
ACTIVITIES OF THE MONTH: PLACE VALUE SYSTEM ACTIVITY: ‘Place Value System’ was an activity done by the Maths department. This activity gives the students a concept of place value up to hundreds. In this activity, the three number columns are arranged in such a way that the third column represents ones place of the number, second column represents tens place while as first column represents the hundreds place. TEACHING PLACE VALUE CONCEPT TO A CHILD WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT: A firm understanding of place value is a prerequisite for all work in arithmetic. The use of concrete materials becomes an important part when teaching place value to a student with hearing impairment. One of the most common equipment used to show place value is a place value kit(base ten blocks) that contains a unit structure representing ones, a rod or long structure representing tens and a flat structure representing hundreds. In this activity teacher begins the activity by giving the concept of ones using the unit structure. The teacher gives the concept of tens using ten unit structures and a rod structure simultaneously hence making child aware about the fact that ten unit structures are equal to one rod. Similar procedure is followed to make the child understand ten rod structures can be represented using a single flat structure. Finally, teacher writes a number and the child arranges the base ten blocks to represent the number given.
DIVISION MACHINE: This month the Mathematics department decided to do a fun activity with the children in order to enhance their arithmetic skills. Division is one of the most difficult mental operations among the four basic arithmetic operations and so to develop the skills, a student was asked to choose a problem card and put the same in the problem box. The child was supposed to put the sticks in the holes provided on the dividend section to indicate the dividend. According to the divisor indicated on the problem card, the sticks were taken out in equal groups and were placed in the dividend holes and quotient cups.
SUBTRACTION USING FLASH CARDS: Quick flash card activity is a fabulous way to practice subtraction. In this activity, different levels of subtraction can be taught. Both the teacher and students participate in the activity. Teacher sets a subtraction fact level and places the flash cards for the given subtraction fact. The student is then asked to solve the question and choose the flash card for the answer. If the answer is correct, then one point is credited to the student.
MUSCLES AND BONES: This month Science department decided to do an activity related to ‘Muscles and Bones’. This activity was done with the students in order to give them a concept of muscles and bones in the human body. In this activity, the ear-buds are used to represent the bones and the clay (blue) represents the muscles.
BUBBLE WRAP STOMP PAINTING: The objective of the activity was to develop gross motor skill, vestibular input and auditory play. The materials required were bubble wrap, paint, tub, rubber band and the chart paper. To set up the painting surface, we rolled out 3 to 4 chart papers next to each other, cut a piece of bubble wrap, wide enough to make a little boot on the student's barefoot. The bubble wrap was loosely wrapped and taped around the student's foot. After this the student got into the paint tub and walked over the paper with the painted bubble wrapped feet. While moving the child could hear the bubble wrap popping.
THIRSTY CROW: ‘Thirsty Crow’ is one of the most famous stories heard over years. This is moral based story taken from ‘Panchatantra’ series. This activity was done with the student of class 2 in order to enhance his reading comprehension and listening/speaking skills. A 3-D model was developed by the teacher to help the child visualize and verbalize the story. At the end of the story, evaluation was done by asking questions regarding the story.
WATER CYCLE: In order to teach the concept of water cycle to low vision student, a 3-D water cycle model was made. The teacher taught the concept through concrete model using tactile approach. A circular cardboard was used by the teacher and it was divided into two sections. One section was used to demonstrate the process of evaporation and the other for condensation. In the first section, the student pasted sun at the top and yellow glitter was used to show the process of vaporization. In the other section, student pasted clouds and rain drops to show the process of condensation.
TEACHER WITH A DIFFERENCE: To teach and to have a passion for the same requires a lot of effort and dedication. Such efforts have been put in by one of our dedicated staff member as he made it to become ‘The Teacher of the Month’. Mr. Wakeel Ahmad Rather, who joined the institution in the year 2017 and has been working with differently-abled students who come for IT classes. While working with the students, he uses new techniques to teach them and has a very humble approach. He has been successful in following the deadlines and maintaining discipline while carrying out the sessions. Based on the parental feedback, well-planned sessions and innovative activities, he has been titled as ‘The Teacher of the Month’.
Painting and Drawing An activity was done by a student of class 12th who was guided by the art teacher of the department. The child remarkably used the canvas board, different brushes of different numbers, colour shading, acrylic colors and mixing palette for painting a beautiful landscape.
“Number Counting:” The ‘Number Counting’ activity was done by the Tiny Tots department. In this activity the teacher began the game by introducing the student to different numbers and the path he/she needs to follow to reach the numbers. The froggy was made to hop along the path to make it reach its home. Student had to walk along the path with the froggy simultaneously reading numbers that came on the way. When all the numbers were read by the student, the second step was followed, where the teacher said one number and the student had to recognize and take the froggy to the number asked. While following the path, the student had to make the froggy skip all the numbers and things like snake, tree etc. The student had to be careful and protect the froggy from being eaten by a snake. The froggy could also have a chance to eat a butterfly on its way. So, across the game student got familiar with numbers in sequence, his/her eye-hand coordination was developed and at the same time the fun element of froggy's eating and escaping dangers was maintained.
