Special assembly held to commemorate BAISAKHI

Keeping in view the tradition of celebrating all festivals with fervour and gaiety and introducing the children to their rich culture and heritage, a special assembly was conducted on Baisakhi on 13 April 2021 by classes V-VIII. The teachers briefed the students about the significance and importance of the festival. A virtual assembly was conducted to celebrate Baisakhi wherein children were dressed in traditional Punjabi attire. Punjabi folk dance was also performed by some children. Students made charts and beautiful drawings reflecting the festival of Baisakhi and prayed for each other’s well-being and good health.

Special assembly held to commemorate RAMADAN

A special assembly was conducted on 13 April, 2021 by the students on the auspicious arrival of Ramadan- a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, and increased devotion and worship.

Ramadan is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims.

Students from class V to VIII, very successfully, conducted the

Confidence session virtual assembly. building They made Ramadan greetings charts, recited Quran and naats. The programme was conducted with full fervour and zeal.

Confidence Building Session

A first of its kind confidence building session was conducted within a group of 61 members, from class V to VIII. The programme was directed in such a manner that it took stress away from the staff and also imparted confidence among them. The staff was divided into 6 groups with a team leader, who led the group of 10 participants each.

Mosaic Art Activity

The mosaic art activity was conducted on 17th of march 2021. Maximum participation was seen from the students for the activity. Every child was involved in the activity with dedication and enthusiasm.

Hope is the thing when you have determination, and courage to stay alive!

A Poor Mother Look there is a poor woman feeding bread to her children, and the others with millions and billions.

They don't care about the people like her and don't offer them even a sweater.

Being very rich, they suspect that they are still poor, which no medicine can ever cure.

Eating in big restaurants, to living in luxurious buildings, they think that they still need a shield.

They never gaze at the poor woman and her children, and wherever see them, behave like a villain.

But God knows well, how to keep the poor alive, and how to keep the rich deprived.

Manufacture and trade of pashmina shawls has been our ancestral family profession since ages.

Though my father and grandfather were government employees, all my grand uncles who reside in our neighbourhood are still engaged with this trade. They have a pashmina weaving centre where these masterpieces of craftsmanship are brought to life. Many workers work laboriously there giving shape to an intricately woven, soft-textured pashmina shawl. I have been keenly watching them taking the process of manufacturing of a pashmina shawl through various steps and finally making it a reality, after several days of hardwork. I get amused as well as inspired by all their hard-work and dedication. Here are some of the steps involved in the making of a pashmina shawl:

1. Raw Pashmina Processing: This involves procuring the pashmina wool from the traders in Ladakh, who in turn obtain it from a rare species of Changthangi goat inhabiting higher pastures of Ladakh and Tibet at an altitude of around 4500 meters above the sea level. To survive the extremely cold temperatures at these altitudes, the goats develop a fine fleece under the thickly covered fur of pashmina wool. Warmth of its wool is what makes it worthwhile in shawl making industry. Kashmiri women folk spin the yarn out of the raw pashmina wool on their traditional spinning wheel or charkha (locally known as yaender). Raw pashmina wool is subjected to many steps including sorting, combing, seasoning and plying on the charkha for converting it into the yarn. The stretched yarn is then wound upon the wooden spindles called “prech” by a process called “tulun” in Kashmiri.

2. Processing of fine Pashmina fibre: Woven pashmina fibre is again subjected to a whole lot of processes that include picking it up from the spindles and knotting the threads together by hand. Once available in the form of staples, yarn is subjected to washing and dying with the desired colours. Dyeing is accomplished by a specialist dyer known in Kashmiri as a “Rangur”.

Yarn is then wound upon five to ten iron rods erected on the ground by a process known as “Yaen Yearun”. Around 1200 to 1500 long threads are stretched across ten to twelve meters to complete each warp. A process called “Bharun” involves stretching, gluing and fixing of yarn into the heddles of a loom called saaz. Warp is dressed by an artisan known as “Bharangor” or warp-dresser. Stretched and partly woven yarn or “yaen” after mild drying, under the sun, followed by dressing, is ready to be loaded on the wooden handloom for weaving.

3. Weaving of the shawl: Weaving of pashmina shawls is undertaken by a “wovur” or a weaver and the process of weaving is called as “wovun”. It takes around ten to fifteen days of back-breaking and painstaking work, using a centuries old technique to weave a single pashmina shawl. Weaving of the pashmina shawls is done completely on the wooden handlooms because pashmina wool is highly delicate that it cannot withstand the vibrations caused by the power looms. A weaver has to rapidly throw the spindles of pashmina yarn called “wonun” across the different layers of “yaen” or warp and tightly kneed it into the woven portions using a wooden shuttle with a comb. One by one pashmina yarn or wonun is criss-crossed upon the warps of yaen and inch by inch pashmina fabric gets cross-linked and woven over a saaz. Every now and then, broken threads have to be rejoined and any extraneous matter has to be removed by the weaver. This procedure has been passed over from generation to generation since ages.

4. Processing of the manufactured shawl: Once the shawl gets ready, it is cut into segments of desired lengths and then subjected to further processing including washing, dyeing, tweezing (purz), embroidery work, final finishing, ironing and packaging. Nowadays geo-tags (geographical indication tags) are also added to the shawl as a mark of their authenticity, brand-building and genuineness.

A variety of pashmina shawls, stoles and scarves are nowadays available in the market bearing wide variety of designs, colours and embroidery work. A shawl with full embroidery all over its surface is known as “purmatan” or “jama”. Soft texture, warmth and intricate designs of pashmina shawls are fast gaining the attention of fashion lovers all over the country as well as abroad, who prefer to adorn a beautiful pashmina shawl upon their shoulders as a mark of grace, grandeur and elegance.

Pashmina shawl weaving by hand, forms a precious part of our generational legacy and cultural ethos and also exemplifies the fine artistry of its weavers. The handicrafts sector has a unique place in our economy. We need to nurture and preserve this craft and its purity. No sort of adulteration or compromise in its quality should be allowed under any circumstances. If nurtured and nourished this craft can build our economy and help our artisans sustain their livelihood for long. I myself wish to adorn a pashmina shawl when I grow old and would also like to present a few to my friends and well-wishers, if possible.

एक समय की बात है , एक गा​ां व में ढे र सारे मुगे रहते थे। गा​ां व के बच्चे ने ककसी एक मुगे को तां ग कर किया था। मुगा​ा परे शान हो गया , उसने सोचा अगले किन सुबह मैं आवाज नहीां कर ां गा। सब सोते रहें गे तब मे री अहकमयत सबको समझ में आएगी , और मु झे तांग नहीां करें गे। मु गा​ा अगली सुबह कुछ नहीां बोला। सभी लोग समय पर उठ कर अपने-अपने काम में लग गए इस पर मु गे को समझ में आ गया कक ककसी के कबना कोई काम नहीां रुकता। सबका काम चलता रहता है ।
