CAMPUS ROUNDUP The students of Junior College section of Delhi Public School, Srinagar welcomed the season of summer with bright smiles in their all-white uniforms. The change of seasons brought with it an important change in one of the core parts of the school system: The Student Council election process. Earlier, the prefects of the school were selected and voted by students of class 3 rd to 12th by a democratic procedure. The change came, not in the democratic setup, but in the voters themselves. Each house was given a House Master and Mistress who nominated students based on their abilities, discipline, overall academic record, sports and other extra-curricular activities. The voting commenced and all the teachers of the school participated in it. After the election process was over, a special assembly was held where the names of the prefects were announced. Baber Malik and Sussanne Wani were honoured with the rank of Head Boy and Head Girl of the school for the year 2018-19. Sadiq Ali and Gurleen Wazir were given the rank of vice-Head Boy and Vice-Head Girl. House Captains and prefects were also called upon the stage, and the school field resounded with cheering and applause. To honour our prefects and formally introduce them to all members of the DPS, Srinagar family, a grand event was held on Saturday, 26 May 2018: The Prefects Investiture Ceremony. The atmosphere was filled with energy and excitement and all of the students and teachers of the school were invited in witnessing this spectacular event, along with the parents of the prefects as well. The ceremony was flawless and elegant. All the prefects were invested with their respective ranks in the Student Council. The prefects, in their all-whites, marched confidently with their heads held high and the flags of the school in their hands, pledging to live up to their mottos. After a few words from our Head Boy and Head Girl, and the special guest Mr. Salman Shah, a vote of thanks from the Vice-Head Boy concluded the ceremony . Not even a week had passed when the school once again roared with euphoric celebration after the results of our Class 12 students were declared. The students rejoiced and the school achieved a positive result of 99.5%. Sama Shabir Shah made the school proud by securing 98% in the exams; topping the valley. Many congratulations dear seniors! The results of class 10 were also declared a few days later and once again the results were good and the new batch of class 11 breathed a collective sigh of relief. Just when we had thought that this month could not get any better, our school once again achieved great success, this time in the field of an “Art Competiton”, where one of our students ---- won the bronze medal. Along with academics, the school has always worked towards sensitizing us. A camp “The Divine Art Camp” where artists from all over the country participated. This camp of the Foot and Mouth artists was held and was appreciated by one and all including the First Lady, Mrs. Vohra. In conclusion, after all the celebrations and excitement, the month of May proved to be fruitful- both literally and figuratively- and we can’t wait to see what else this year has in store for us.

Following Our Passion In the midst of our hectic school life, there is always a thing that we actually love to do and that gives us immense pleasure. Our passion is something that drives us crazy about doing something that we love and that infuses us with self-confidence and satisfaction. There is a time in our life when we don’t know what our passion is, but the only answer to that is to give your best to all that you do and keep trying new things without the fear of failure or the fear of being judged or laughed at. For some, passion is just a word that hardly matters. However, for some this word is profound. For some, this word is obsession. For me, this word is the source of my happiness. To unfurl the deepest abilities that we possess and figuring something satisfactory out of it, is indeed the purest form of bliss. For me, filling into my sweet creations of cakes and desserts love and creativity is my way of giving a pathway to my passion. What I have learnt is that no matter how much trivial your interests and passion seems to others, as long as you love it and feel connected with yourself while doing it, you are already one step closer to being who you are supposed to become. Whilst following our passion we learn many important aspects of life. Through my passion I have learnt that the ultimate key to success is perseverance, patience. From the moment the cake bakes in the oven to the point the hot cake cool downs, from the patience and efforts I require to make the icing completely clean to the things I am supposed to write on the cake, the only thing that ensures me contentment is my patience. But nothing good in life comes easy. With every dusk of success, the dawn of failure approaches. The true winner is he, who despite of all the failures and challenges, keeps the light of determination ever shining in his heart and keeps the spirit of never giving up. Never miss the opportunity of learning from your failures. At least, that is what I have always tried to do. Our thoughts find a way through our words. I believe our imaginations find a way through our creativity and creations. It finds a way through our actions. By fusing our minds with the innate potential we all possess, by putting efforts to realize our ambitions and ignoring the thought of “What will people think or say”, let us start doing things that we love and appreciate ourselves for everything we do. Let us find our passion, because in life fulfillment doesn’t come unless one is passionate enough to turn his imaginations into reality.

PRAYER My mother lies on my lap, Pearls of sweat falling off her skin. This ablution pierces me, soul to bone lest water; "I think I am ready for prayer now." Her hair is a Satin thread, that cuts through my fingers. A prayer rug maddened to feel the burden of my forehead. I run my sinful hands between her hair to confess; "I confessed that I yearn to pray now." She sings to me a lullaby. Each night I sleep, I am drawn closer to God. God himself cradles me in his lap in return; "Mother he tells me, I am worthy of this prayer now" My blood numbs itself in my limbs. Her breath feels like verses that put my veins to sleep. Oh how pure and holy my thighs are She's whispered God's secrets to them. "God knows, I know all the right words for this prayer now" Don't wake my mother up from my fortunate lap. I have yet to learn the soulful love she possess. Is this the meditation the Saints talk about? "Oh then tell them, I think I've found their way to pray now."

Democracy -The best form of government After reading the name of the topic the question that must've popped up in your mind will what exactly democracy is? Democracy is basically the combination of two words- 'demos' and 'kratia', both of Greek origin, meaning people and rule respectively. So in modern usage, democracy is the form of government in which people elect representatives among themselves to form a governing body. Other than democracy government systems like monarchy, dictatorship, federalism communism etc. are there in some of the countries around the globe. So the question that arises now is what makes democracy the best form of government. Well if we talk about monarchy in which the supreme power is in the hands of a monarch or a ruler who rules over a territory or state for life or hereditary right. Eventually after 2 or 20 years a week ruler is born in the dynasty that leads to its collapse and anarchy which is not at all cool. Another alternative that some of my fellow contestants have talked about or are going to talk about is Communism in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single party holds power. People have no choice and control over their own produce. And as only a single party rules accountability is seen know where. Even China had to welcome capital in the form of FDI to save its economy. The best example is that of USSR, the condition of Russia economically when Soviet broke is disastrous. This kind of government looks good only in theory. Now coming to dictatorship, the kind of government in which all power rests within one individual. Unlike democracy people have no say in law making and governing process and laws cannot be revived. As democracy thrives on freedom, dictatorship thrives on oppression. In democracy, welfare of the people is the primary aim. The government itself brings out welfare policies for the benefit of the masses. A broader platform is provided to discuss every issue concerning the people. Democracy works in the outcome of demands of the people from Peon to PM everyone is accountable. Another aspect of democracy is that it promotes growth as it increases competition. Economists argue that competition has an important role to play in improving productivity and therefore growth of an economy. Therefore we can bring out the conclusion that democracy is completely and absolutely the best form of government. ''Democracy helps to end chaos, it’s always there to stop morose, it’s the tool to be an ethos, it makes the nation free of flaws.''

God’s Vision Delhi Public School Srinagar has always supported encouraged and cherished people who are specially abled. One of the many examples is that of Ms. Qurat-ul-Lain, a bright and optimistic individual with visual impairment. She is a teacher and not only imparting information but also is an inspiration in herself. An interview was conducted and it was evident that she is not a weakened by the impairment but has transformed it into one of her strengths. When asked about her life story, she told us that she wasn't visually impaired by birth. She was born with an incurable disease and because of that, she lost her vision as she grew up. Even after the doctors had suggested not to spend time with books as they can strain the eyes and cause dysfunction earlier, she studied in a local private school and completed her twelfth. She went on to achieve a degree in music and after that learned computers with the help of workshops. She further added that her family is her main supporter and has always encouraged her to move forward in life without fearing about the weaknesses. Few questions that were asked about her inspiring journey were: Question 1: As a child, what were the challenges that you had to face being a visually impaired individual? She replied: The most challenging part as a child was that of creating a bond with other children who had a perfect vision, which I did very well. Question 2: What was the defining moment that encouraged you to overcome all the hurdles that came in your way? She replied: Interaction with other people is, and has always been a very important factor in overcoming the challenges. I can never stay isolated and I think my habit of socializing has helped me a lot to overcome every kind of issue that I faced. Question 3: Has there been an inspiration in the form of a driving force that influenced you? She replied: My inspiration is my family that helped, encouraged and supported me in every step I took. Question 4: What is the future that you have in your mind regarding the younger generations? She replied: I want to spread awareness among people regarding impairment so that those affected are always supported. Question 5: What would be the one piece of advice for all the little children that you would like to give? She replied: Never think that a disabled person is not a part of the society. Never pity them because that will only add to their feeling of being dependent. Accept them and make them a part of the society as a whole. Alienation in our cases is more painful than the impairment itself. ……Ms. Qurat-ul-lain is absolutely an inspiration and an epitome of strength for all of us. We must learn from her that no matter how many problems we come across, we must face bravely and overcome each hurdle of our lives. By Mahak Nasir & Babra Shafiqi – XII D2
