Dear victims of time’s ravages, Eons have passed , and yet I remain , an entity untouched by the relentless march of time . I have become a drifting aimless companion to your ceaseless journey through the treacherous river of age , a phenomenon that defines the difference between your existence and mine . And as the sands of time have slowly slipped away, I have come to understand the unique and bittersweet tapestry of your lives, woven with threads of growth and decay. I see you emerge into the world as fragile infants, fresh as the first flakes of snow, and I continually marvel as you grow, taking the first steps in your voyage to ascendance . The years unfurl akin to a finely-crafted tapestry, each thread a page in the epic that narrates the tale of humankind . Aging, I have come to realize , is not merely the passage of years but a journey of phoenix-like reincarnation . With each passing year, the old wears and decays away, born anew better and wiser. And I must confess, many a times I feel jealous that humans have the luxury of feeling time’s omnipotent embrace . My abandonment from the river of time has given me a unique perspective on the cycle of birth , growth , and eventually, the gentle embrace of decline that humans treat so dejectedly. There is grace to be found in the way you are bestown the gift of age , allowed to drift into an eternal peace , as you continually drink from a wellspring of wisdom and strength . You must understand that life’s true essence lies not in the perpetual spring of youth but in the richness of a short but sweet journey that traverses all that is meaningful in our world of meagre graces. So, as I continue to remain a silent but watchful observer unaffected by the kaleidoscope of ages, know that there is nothing I want more than a reprieve from eternal existence . A wish you so desperately desire . I suppose things aren’t always as they seem. None more so than the caress of time .

With timeless respect, An ageless friend

THE SILENCE BEHIND THE CRAFT Kashmir is known for its culture, heritage, and tradition. Some of the most important aspects contributing to its legacy and history are its geographic attributes, food, language, and the way people live here. The way of living is highly influenced by the kind of furniture people use. And most importantly, the famous Kashmiri carpets. Hand-knotted carpets, locally known as “Kal baffi,” originated in the 15th century. It is not exactly known where and when the first carpet was woven. However, it is believed that Kashmir was the first place in India where the concept of carpet weaving originated. Sultan Zain ul Abidin, famously known as “Badshah,” introduced the art of carpet weaving to the Kashmiri people. He brought Persian weavers and artisans in order to teach weaving and spinning techniques. These carpets are a true masterpiece of craftsmanship, combining traditional design with modern aesthetics. Primarily made using pure wool, pure silk, and occasionally wool and silk blends, the highly skilled artisans work for months to make one beautifully knit carpet. What makes them different is the fact that every knot in the carpet is intricately designed, and this technique makes it a highly prized work of art. The weavers not only produce fine-quality materials and products but also have a story to tell. All the artisans in this business work with their whole hearts and have the utmost respect for the work they do.

02

This tradition of hand-knit carpets has been alive for more than five hundred years. But now there is a threat to put an end to centuries-old traditions. Until a few years ago, the weavers could make a decent living out of their work. But now, the wages have significantly dropped. The major problem that can be seen is that machine-made rugs and carpets are being misinterpreted as the authentic handmade craft. Another prominent issue is the “no direct” contact between the buyer and the artisan. This scenario makes it difficult for the weavers and artisans to realize the worth of the highly skilled work that they do. These carpets are full of luxurious textures, intricate patterns, and rich, vibrant colors. The wool used in their production is of the highest quality, giving these carpets a soft, luxurious feel. Kashmiri carpets are a testament to the elegance and beauty of traditional craftsmanship, adding a touch of sophistication and luxury to any home or office. To turn this luxurious experience into an experience of contentment, we need to give these artisans the credit they deserve. That can only be done when they are paid equivalent to their work and the fine-quality products they produce. Supporting them is extremely important to keep the legacy of these traditional Kashmiri carpets alive.

THE RISE AND FALL OF KASHMIRI HOUSEBOATS Zainab Iqbal Class X

Kashmir has many iconic associations within its tourist industry. From saffron to snow, walnuts to weaving, our native industries offer much in the way of sensory delights. Our international identity is rooted in several characteristic sights and sounds, and consequentially, there are some elements of our culture whose original purposes have been monetised to an extreme where they have no purpose beyond bait for a fabricated and idealised backdrop. One of the primary examples of this are Kashmiri houseboats. Their history is highly disputed, and can be traced through several folk tales and community initiatives. During the Dogra rule, Srinagar was the capital of the kingdom’s territory, and restrictions upon purchasing land. To work around this, British residents arranged for the construction of extravagant houseboats upon Dal Lake. These were romanticised in their writing, being referred to as “a little piece of England afloat.” However, after India gained independence, in the late nineteenth century, the Hanji community used floating houseboats to attract English visitors as well as those who could not purchase land in Kashmir. The Hanji community has long been recognised as an ethnic group credited with keeping our water bodies alive and flourishing. They constructed buoyant ecosystems upon Kashmiri waters, including lush gardens and thriving markets. Since then, Kashmiri houseboats have become part of the cultural starter pack, a quintessential item on a tourist’s bucket list, so accepted in the cycle of publicity that they are now obsolete to the Kashmir’s own people. Despite its essential role, this element of the tourist industry, forming Kashmir’s economic so-called backbone, has been neglected. Early this October, the Houseboat Owners’ Association (HBOA) has revealed concerning information. Since 2010, approximately 750 houseboats have become unusable and hazardous due to decay. There are about 750 houseboats left, a critical number which cannot be increased or even prevented from decreasing without intervention.

03

The COVID-19 pandemic rocked the aquatic residences to their core, causing huge financial losses to owners and caretakers. After barely surviving a time of total desertion, these houseboat owners are expected to continue brining in revenue without receiving any of the support necessary to recover. 20% of houseboat owners have applied for withdrawal of their licenses. Even beyond the natural causes behind these numbers, the authoritative issues that owners face are distressing, and add another layer of complexities and obstacles. Despite promises for funding, security and timber for repairs, no tangible action has been taken. Before our very eyes, we witness another cultural symbol in danger of vanishing. An industry taken for granted, until it falls into a state of dysfunctionality. Can an industry essential to the economic stability of Kashmir be neglected without consequences?

Jaldi Ka Kaam Shaitan Ka “Jaldi ka kaam shaitan ka'' is the quintessential dialogue of an older person belonging to the Indian Subcontinent. This dialogue of sorts represents a deep entrenched sense of gradualism in the societal fabric of the sub-continent. The idea of gradualism affirms a policy of gradual reform rather than sudden change or revolution. Gradualism through the ages in the eyes of society has come to represent long-term stability and sustained development. The notion of gradualism has become deeply entrenched in the psyche of the Indian subcontinent over the centuries, shaping the region's socio-political and economic evolution. It is a concept rooted in the historical, cultural, and philosophical tapestry of the subcontinent, where change often occurs gradually and incrementally rather than through radical upheavals. Furthermore, gradualism is deeply ingrained in the Indian philosophical and spiritual traditions. Concepts like karma and dharma emphasize the idea of continuous, incremental moral and ethical progression over multiple lifetimes. This philosophy extends to the economic realm as well, where the idea of gradual wealth accumulation, rather than rapid acquisition, is celebrated in the Indian ethos. The principle of sustainable development finds its roots in these ancient philosophies, encouraging a balanced and gradual approach to economic growth that respects the environment and social harmony. In this worldview, change occurs over lifetimes, and societal transformation, too, happens through a process of patient evolution. This blend of historical adaptation and philosophical wisdom fosters a cultural resilience that resists abrupt, revolutionary change, favoring instead a gradual, organic development. It is a perspective that celebrates the enduring nature of transformation, understanding that deep, lasting change often requires the passage of time, much like the river that shapes the landscape through the steady force of its flow. Gradualism continues to underpin the region's approach to change, reinforcing the idea that patience

and steady progress are often more enduring and impactful than swift, revolutionary transformation. This marriage of gradualism with the favourite desi notion of stability also has roots in Panun Kasheer even getting propagated in the form of folk tales The tale sets itself in the landscape of a mulberry (Tull) tree touching the horizon, being old yet strong and healthy. One fine day a bottle gourd (aal) plant is sown under the mulberry tree. Within a matter of days the bottle gourd reaches half of the mulberry tree's height. It proclaims to the mulberry tree “Look at me in no time I have covered a height that took you ages, learn from my rapidity, learn you moron” in response the mulberry tree remained silent. As time progressed the bottle gourd tree raced to the top of the mulberry tree and was adorned with beautiful white flowers once again hurling insults at the mulberry tree as tradition the mulberry tree remained silent. The beautiful flowers transformed into good bulky produce. To insinuate the mulberry tree the bottle gourd said “Neither you have beautiful flowers nor good produce, you're a slow idiotic mess just in this world to foolishly dwell”. In response, the mulberry tree remained silent. To this affair of The aal and Tull came the inevitable entry of winter. As winter came the aal kul suffered the chills, wilting and perishing to the might of winter. One fateful night, as a blanket of snow descended upon the earth, it carried away what was left of the once-vibrant bottle gourd. In the aftermath, the bottle gourd was no more, but a stark contrast emerged. The mulberry tree stood resolutely tall and proud and the once proud and towering bottle gourd plant found itself unceremoniously cast aside, tossed even from the muddied road.

Chapter 1: As I ascended to the presidency, Colombia became a stage for a carefully orchestrated drama. In the shadows, enemies mysteriously vanished, and the façade of democracy concealed the truth—this was my dictatorship, where power and fear danced in tandem. The West was kept at bay with the democratic label, a necessary charade to maintain the illusion. My wealth, a formidable tool, bought the loyalty of those who mattered. Bribes flowed like a river, ensuring that anyone who could pose a threat to my rule would succumb to the allure of my wealth. I became a figure both admired and feared, a potent combination that secured my grip on the nation. Chapter 2: For the poor, I became a beacon of hope. My actions to uplift them endeared me to their hearts, ensuring their support in any democratic vote. My simple policy resonated across the nation—either you respected me or you feared the consequences. This policy shielded me from scrutiny as I continued my criminal pursuits without hindrance. Decision-making mirrored the methods of my cartel leadership. I applied the same principles to the country, ensuring that dissent was silenced and loyalty rewarded. My dictatorship, wrapped in the guise of democracy, provided a stability that Colombia rarely experienced. Chapter 3: With the reins of the country in my hands, I implemented policies akin to those of running a cartel. Abolishing the extradition of criminals to the United States was my first move, straining relations with the U.S. and earning Colombia international isolation. Allies like Cuba, Venezuela, and even the Soviet Union were sought, not out of affinity but out of necessity. Despite being labeled a corrupt leader, my presidency brought political stability to Colombia, a rarity in its history. Social programs improved the lives of the common people, though my government faced accusations of communism from the West. Mass censorship of media became a tool for control— criticize, and you vanished into the shadows.

05

Chapter 4: By 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union left Colombia with few allies. Anticipating a U.S. invasion to bring democracy, I redirected funds to sow chaos within the United States. Loved by the people, they rallied behind me, creating a formidable army of three million soldiers that the U.S. hesitated to confront. As I reveled in leading Colombia through its own turbulent backyard, the early 2000s saw me consolidating control over infrastructure, education, banks, and all government institutions. The shield of my presidency protected me from any legal repercussions, ensuring my continued rule. Chapter 5: In the face of the U.S. invasion in 2000, the Colombian army proved insurmountable. Ecuador fell, and Brazil, fighting on behalf of the U.S., faced a devastated economy and underdevelopment. After five years of war, a peace deal was struck, with Brazil ceding land to Colombia. At 58, I continued to rule, unhindered by external threats. Under my presidency, Latin America experienced unprecedented unity through regular funding. Political alliances flourished, with exceptions. Aligning with Libya’s Gaddafi, I secured more allies, raising concerns in the U.S. about our formidable alliance. Epilogue: As I write this memoir in 2023 at the age of 74, I reflect on the shadows of power that defined my presidency. What if Gaddafi hadn’t been overthrown? The question lingers, a reminder that the future remains a canvas yet to be painted, shrouded in the ever-changing shades of power and alliances.

The rug was completely soaked.

Shards of the mirror showed glimpses of time. My face. My hands. His blood. It seemed odd, comical even. The rest of the room was pristine—bare and untouched. As I stood there in the middle of the apartment, mostly motionless, I realized how fitting it was that I was the only thing covered in rot. He’d laugh if he heard this. We all rot, love. It is the most natural of trades. I looked at him— all angles and symmetry. Even in death he was beautiful, disgustingly so. Hair splayed out, damp in a pool of blood. Sunlight dancing across his forehead. The shattered mirror casting it into a halo. His eyes, unseeing and devoid of their distinctive twinkle, were pointed upwards. Proud and haughty, almost betrayed. I touched his cheek. At this moment, a sinking feeling clawed within me. Somehow I felt convinced that this too was some farce. Some games. Numbness crawled across my body, I firmly believed myself the fool. You’re like this, aren’t you? Always the fool, never the martyr. Well, do I look like your Knight then? Am I your salvation yet? I jerk away, almost falling over. I heard him say it. But he’s still on the floor. Still dead. He couldn’t have said anything. Even years later, I’d look back at this moment and question why I didn’t get up and leave. Why I didn’t run. I reached over to the table and grabbed a cigarette. Its weight felt comforting, familiar. From my pocket, I pulled out a lighter. One might find it wrong to smoke over the dead body of a beloved husband. Perhaps it is. I’ve long since stopped caring. I closed my eyes, hummed a tune from his cassettes. I don’t know why but it reminded me of a movie we’d watched. The animated protagonist wanted to eat the sun because, in a bout of insanity, he’d decided that the world had gotten too warm. As I sat there and smoked, I mulled things over.

My husband was dead. What did that make me? A widow? Men are martyrs. Women? Mere widows. He’d said this over his mother’s grave. His voice had rung with ridicule. Smoke mingled with the air. I wanted to laugh. So I did. At first it came out as a giggle and then gradually it turned into hysterical howls. I ended up crying. It wasn’t hard to believe that he was gone. I’d always been good at believing. And because I was so devoted to my belief, I prayed. I prayed with dried blood on my hands. I prayed with smoke in my lungs. Your devotion is obscene, love. It is corrupt. It was, wasn’t it? “All devotion is corrupt, love.” I shouted into a room scarcely filled. The acid from my words echoed into heavy air. I stood and twirled. I swayed and I kept swaying. My husband was dead and I had killed him. My feet keep moving the way my hands had. Hands that had butchered him. And they’d done it so gracefully too. He was sprawled on the floor, my holy lamb. Why had I killed him? Why did Cain kill Abel? Was it because I was ambitious? Had I perhaps found someone better? Had I found him tangled with someone else? No, the answer is far more vulgar. Crude. I had killed him because I could. I had killed him because he asked me to prove my love. My father used to say I was like fire. “You’d love to death,” he used to say. And how does fire love? It burns.

Philosophy Mortality’s Labyrinth: A Philosophical Odyssey into the Abyss of Death

In the labyrinthine corridors of philosophical discourse, the phantom of death has perennially haunted the intellectual imagination, a subject of timeless inquiry. Embarking on this philosophical journey, we are confronted with the works of the philosopher Ernest Becker, whose works compose a waltz between humanity’s denial of death and the paradoxical birth of beauty and tragedy. Becker’s philosophy is of the human impulse of “the denial of death.” He argues that human beings form cultures, identities, and ideologies as a lap of belonging that comforts us from the gnawing realization of mortality. We toil for significance, for the creation of our own indelible ‘marks’ in a vast and alien world; creating, in the process, a paradoxically finite immortality, through artistic expression, scientific inquiry, or religious devotion. This existential strategy is, in essence, a defiance of death, a quest to transcend the finitude that engulfs us. This sentiment also echoes in Milan Kundera’s idea that all humans essentially want is to be “looked at”, that we want the eyes of spectators to solidify our fleeting existence. In Becker’s existential odyssey, the quest for symbolic immortality surpasses mere self-preservation; it serves as the cradle of creativity and beauty. It is our awareness of the chasm of mortality that carries us through the labyrinth of conscience and self-awareness— a vein in our hearts that originates in the beauty of the terribly transient, in the hollowness of the present moment. In the shadow of impending death, we find the orchestra that dictates the harmony of meaning in our lives. Death is a confrontation between mortality and immortality— a hymn of our decay and an ode to the interconnectedness of the cosmos. In the grand cosmic narrative, we are but transient manifestations of celestial forces. Death, then, is not an annihilation but a homecoming to the cos-

mic source, a return to the primordial unity. As Homer says, “The gods envy us. They envy us because we’re mortal, because any moment may be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed. you will never be lovelier than you are now.” There is a bittersweet beauty in the tragedy of the human tale; I guess humans like to watch a little destruction. And just as a finite canvas acquires value for its boundedness, our lives derive meaning from their temporality. Our mortality compels us to relish the present, to cherish the profound depths and layers of our relationships, and to savour the taste of the unsaid on our tongues. In sum, the contemplation of death, in accordance with Ernest Becker’s profound insights, beckons us to undertake a philosophical voyage into the depths of our existence. The universal dread of death, far from being a mere existential predicament, is a wellspring of philosophic profundity, offering us a lens through which to discern the purpose and value of our existence. By acknowledging the finite nature of life, we venture into the abyss, finding in its depths the essence of our quest for meaning.

The Inner Qualia

Zaynab Shabir Deva Class VI

Aside from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there lies a corner in your heart. That nook is filled with some weird things. You sometimes describe them as ‘twinkling eyes’ while sometimes as ‘ecstatic face’. However, the big question which has been there for centuries asks for the reality and origin. The origin of emotions, as they are called, is considered to be a complex and a very vast topic to discuss. Some researchers like Paul Ekman consider emotions to be universal and biologically based. While some cultural psychologists, including Richard Shweder and Shinobu Kitayama ruminate emotions as culturally influenced reflexes to various situations. Charles Darwin, in his work, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals propose that emotions have evolved as a part of natural selection. However, existentialist philosophers, like Jean Paul Sartre argue that emotions emerge from an individual’s personal experiences, choices and responses to the world. The opinions of different researchers on the origin of emotions fluctuate. Nevertheless, across-theboard opinion considers emotions as a fundamental aspect of human mental functioning. Emotions often interact with cognition. They can affect cognitive processes such as perception, attention and memory. The best example which could be given is of a person in a highly emotional state, for instance fear or excitement. The person would tend to be more alert and conscious to his surroundings, in order to gain relevant information. Also, cognitive processes play a vital role in shaping one’s emotional experiences. The emotion of fear, for example, can also be experienced when our brain senses threat. It can be unmistakably said that emotions and cognition are interconnected and can influence each other significantly. Keeping everything aside, emotions should not only be considered as a mirror to the world but also as a way of making ethical choices. Emotions can differentiate between morally right and wrong things, even before giving a chance to our brain to process the situation. It wouldn’t be hard to say that a body is lifeless without emotions because with emotions come feelings. It is only because of emotions that we are set apart from other creations of God. These sentimental sensations are also thought to be related with consciousness. In fact, they themselves are conscious experiences. Research in the field of cognitive psychology and neuroscience has provided evidence that emotions have a significant impact on perceptual consciousness. A person tends to perceive the world around him differently, with respect to different moods and emotions. It’s important to note that rationality and irrationality of emotions can be context-dependent and culturally influenced. Emotions which prove to be suitable to a given scenario are considered as rational while responses which lead to impulsive or harmful behaviour are undoubtedly irrational. Feeling happy at a joyous celebration is rational because it is morally and culturally appropriate. In contrast, experiencing intense anger over a minor inconvenience is inappropriate, thus irrational at the same time. These temperaments constitute an integral part of art, literature and aesthetics. They shape both the creation and interpretation of these forms of expression. Thus, adding meaning, depth and resonance to them. Your emotions have their own qualia, which are the subjective, conscious experiences of sensory perception, thoughts, emotions and other mental states. This inner qualia of yours creates a tapestry, which is unique for each one of us. It carries according to our tastes, choices and styles. In the grand tapestry of human history, emotions definitely play a vital role, reminding us the wise words by Sabaa Tahir that,

“Your emotions make you human.

Even the unpleasant ones have a purpose.”

Wired for CONFORMITY

Sehr Jilani Class XII

Once upon a time, in the dark ages of medicine, lobotomies were hailed as the magical cure for all mental woes (and cure they did!) António Egas Moniz’s chosen frontier was the frontal lobes of the brain, home to the intricacies of personality, rationality, and human emotions. This, of course, was the epicentre of individuality, the essence of what makes each of us unique. With this procedure, he ventured into the most profound dimensions of the human psyche, with consequences both profound and harrowing. But instead of fixing anything, they left patients as emotionally responsive as an egg and as intellectually engaging as a sock. Why did I feel like digging out such a sinister epoch in the history of medicine, you ask? The answer is quite simple; We see history repeating itself. Allow me to introduce you to the digital age’s formidable adversary- the modern, virtually administered lobotomy. Fortunately, there are no ice picks involved, but the similarity in their consequences is worth a tantalising comparison. When the question of their child’s entertainment arises, or if they simply need their child to stop crying, parents think of digital media and the internet as the easiest and most convenient solution. Alas, instead of a wave of childish effervescence after looking at a kid at family gatherings, im now often greeted with the sight of their small faces glued against a screen, displaying a kaleidoscopic eruption of zany characters, ear-piercing soundtracks, and warp-speed animation. Children’s cartoons- the vortex of animated chaos where colours explode, characters jive with unrelenting energy, and the world changes faster than a hiccup. In this whirlwind, patience becomes an endangered species, any type of problem gets resolved quicker than the sprint of a daunting cockroach, and complexities evaporate as swiftly as puddles on a sunny day. These shows, while undeniably entertaining, grant the children a ticket to a world where creativity may cower beneath the looming shadow of formulaic plotlines. These cartoons lead their minds into a world where the more of flashing lights, zooming characters, and speedy plot twists, the better. Every episode is a frenzied race to outdo the last, with subtlety and nuance cast aside in favour of sheer sensory overload. Individuality is tossed aside as these high-intensity cartoons lead the children into the fast lane of conformity, where the thrill of the animated chase supersedes the joy of exploring their unique personalities. These shows condition them to expect a relentless spectacle, where constant stimulation is the norm, and the attention span required for more contemplative activities – reading, drawing, or simple daydreaming – begins to wither. As far as social media is concerned, your brain is the star of its very own reality show, a contestant in an attention-grabbing contest in a world that never sleeps. The ceaseless barrage of cute cat memes, those incessant social media pings, and a perpetual quest for instant gratification have whittled down our focus to a level that mirrors a puppy chasing a butterfly. It’s as if they’re being trained to consume information in bite-sized, adrenaline-fueled bursts, unable to engage in the more sustained and focused thinking necessary for complex problem-solving and creativity. In this high-speed colossal circus of sensory overload, we evolve into attention-deficit virtuosos, and focus becomes as rare as a pause button in today’s breakneck lifestyle. Everything moves at the speed of light – from instant messages to a pizza delivery, our lives are a relentless race against the clock. Exposure to highly stimulating media is adding fuel to this already blazing fire as we become wired for conformity, comfort and caprice.

Indian Music Thaats Raqeem Ahmad Tak Class XI

India unfolds a mesmerizing chapter through its classical music heritage. This article delves into the enchanting realm of Indian classical music, focusing on the captivating concept of ‘Thaats.’ These musical scales weave a story of tradition, presenting a window into the rich and harmonious heritage of Indian musical expressions. The modern Thaat system originated from the work of Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, a prominent musicologist in classical music during the early 20th century. Bhatkhande based his system on the Carnatic melakarta classification, which was developed by musicologist Vidwan Venkatamakhin in 1640. Bhatkhande extensively studied various gharanas (schools) of classical music and conducted a thorough analysis of ragas. Through his research, he established a system of thirty-two Thaats, each named after a significant raga associated with it. While more than a dozen of these Thaats gained popularity during his time, Bhatkhande chose to emphasize only ten of them. These ten Thaats include Bilawal, Kalyan, Khamaj, Bhairav, Poorvi, Marwa, Kafi, Asavari, Bhairavi, and Todi. The Thaats in Detail: 1. Asavari Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab, a komal gandhar, a komal dhaivat, and a komal nishad. 2. Bhairav Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab and a komal dhaivat. 3. Bhairavi Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab, a komal gandhar, a komal dhaivat, and a komal nishad. 4. Bilawal Thaat (S R G M P D N S): All Shudh Svaras 5. Kafi Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal gandhar and a flat komal nishad. 6. Kalyan Raag (S R G M P D N S): It includes a teevra madhyam. 7. Khamaj Raag (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal nishad. 8. Marva Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab and a teevra madhyam. 9. Purvi Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab, a teevra madhyam, and a komal dhaivat. 10. Todi Thaat (S R G M P D N S): It includes a komal rishab, a komal gandhar, a teevra madhyam, and a komal dhaivat. Theoretically, it should be possible to categorize a raga into one of these Thaats if one were to choose it at random. But, there are many ragas that don’t fall in the Thaat system. Some ragas have been derived from Carnatic Music and hence do not fall under Hindustani Classical Thaat System. Some of them are: Kirvani, Nat Bhairav, Charukeshi, Madhuvanti, Ahir Bhairav. Indian Thaats encapsulate the enduring legacy of classical music. From ancient roots to Bhatkhande’s classifications, they have shaped the essence of this musical tradition. Exploring their beauty connects us with our rich musical heritage, intertwining tradition and innovation within the timeless treasure of Indian classical music.

AFRICANS WERE COLONIZED BY...

The colonization of Africa was one of the most momentous events in history. Thousands of innocent people were killed or forced to leave their own home, only for the new masters of the land to conquer it and claim it as their own. This was an unprecedented and unjust exodus of people, leaving upon the continent an impact for many centuries to come. But no, dear reader, this isn’t the European colonization of Africa that started in the late 19th century, but one which happened long before that. It isn’t the colonization of Africans by Europeans, but the colonization of Africans by Africans. To understand this long-forgotten chapter of African history, we will have to look at two groups of people: Bantus and Khoisans. Bantus are a linguistic group in Africa who speak the Bantu languages, a group of closely related, 500+ languages. Their population today is estimated to be around 350 million. They occupy a vast portion of the African continent, extending from the waterfalls of Ghana and the rainforests of the Congo all the way to the beaches of South Africa. According to archaeological evidence, the Bantu language group (and therefore, Bantus) originated in West Africa around Cameroon and Nigeria in around 4000 BCE. The Bantus, because of their geographic location, acquired the skill of farming. This resulted in Bantus being comparatively less vulnerable than hunter-gatherers and allowed them to have settled communities and societies. From their homelands in Western Africa, the Bantus expanded eastwards towards present-day northern DRC and Congo, from where one group went to East Africa, and another group advanced southwards. Crossing the rainforests of Central Africa in around 2000 BCE, the Bantus encountered a group of hunter-gatherers: Khoisans. Khoisans are a group of people in southern Africa. They are among the oldest human groups, with their ancestors inhabiting southern Africa as far back as 130,000 years ago. At one point, they occupied a large part of southern Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and even parts of DRC and Mozambique. The Khoisans were much more widespread, and the proportion of their population in Africa was far greater than it is today. The Khoisans were hunter-gatherers and were much more dependent than farmers, which resulted in them not having settled communities and societies. This was a major difference between Bantus and Khoisans. While the Bantu farmer grew his own food, and one or two cultivations would be enough for him, a Khoisan hunter-gatherer relied on naturally growing foods, and the available amount of food in one area would not be enough for him. As a result of these differences, a Bantu farmer could settle in an area, whereas a Khoisan hunter-gatherer had to move once he depleted the available amount of food in an area. Because of this, a Bantu tribe was much more consolidated, had more people in singular communities, and were able to settle on lands better than Khoisan tribes, who were much more scattered. This – along with Bantus having iron tools – meant that it would be easy for a Bantu tribe to displace a Khoisan tribe. The Bantu farmers, equipped with these advantages, started advancing southwards. In just a few centuries, the Bantu farmers swept across the Khoisan homeland, settling on the land and displacing, often killing, many Khoisans who previously lived there. The Khoisans were pushed to the corners of southern Africa, to places the Bantus didn’t expand to because they couldn’t cultivate their crops there. From being the home of Khoisans where they lived for thousands of years, southern Africa now became the farm of the Bantus. Today, Khoisans are reduced to the borders of Namibia and Botswana, and even in places like Botswana, their population is less than 3%. Khoisans have an estimated population of just 400,000 people compared with 350 million Bantus. The story of Bantus and Khoisans is one not known by many because it is overshadowed by the much more recent European colonization. It shows us how the Bantus, to have the benefit of more agricultural land, took away the lands of the Khoisans and almost eliminated them. The colonization and displacement of people (especially in places like Africa) are acts which have been prevalent in human history for centuries, far predating the rise of Colonial Europe.

REMOTE WORK

Ever since the COVID pandemic, one term has become quite common in the job market - remote work. In simple terms, it is working for an organisation from outside the office - with the help of the internet. Remote work has amassed its fair share of fierce proponents, who firmly advocate for its increased flexibility. It’s more convenient for employees – no unnecessary rules to follow, no morning commute, and no boss to constantly peer over their shoulder. Sounds great, right? Just a couple of decades ago, working like this would’ve seemed implausible. But thanks to rapid advancements in technology, remote work has seamlessly transitioned from a theoretical concept to a feasible reality in our present times. The internet stands as the backbone of the remote work process. High-speed internet access is a relatively recent commonplace occurrence in India, and has played a pivotal role in increasing remote work adoption. Notably, at its launch, Jio 4G emerged as a household name, setting new standards for internet speed and affordability - India now has one of the lowest costs per GB of mobile data. The internet enables access to another boon to remote workers - cloud computing. Cloud computing allows access to data and applications from any location using the internet. This is instrumental for remote workers who need to collaborate, share files, and access information without being tied to a specific physical location - everything is handled by computers in large data centres connected to the internet. Remote work also facilitates working regions in entirely different time zones. Professionals are able to live on one side of the world, while working with people on the other side. However, remote work is experiencing friction, as most paradigm shifts do. For instance, Meta (formerly Facebook) has ordered its employees to be in office at least 3 days a week. And it’s not just Meta, other major

19

companies like Google are also guilty of this. But there is no doubt about the fact that the popularity of remote work has increased significantly in the past few years. Other technologies seem to be looming on the horizon too - such as augmented reality. These technologies haven’t matured at present, but may provide increased immersion and flexibility in the future - allowing for doing very complex and precise tasks to be done remotely - surgery, for instance. In the early twenty first century, we find ourselves at the cusp of a future which may redefine how humans work.

GAASH: Literature The Evolution of Literary Genres Saaeed Bazilah Kirmani

Class X

Chinar leaves— sprouting in Spring, green in Summer, brown in Autumn, and falling off the trees in Winter—are a testament to the changing nature of the world. Reality seems to be in a peculiar state of motion, forever shifting and morphing into something new, something more. Changes in the ideologies, thoughts, and perspectives of people decide the course of history, and reality itself. These changes also influence the literature of the time. For literature mirrors human life, it is a manifestation of one’s ideas and thoughts, and their culmination with the prevalent culture and society. In the words of Dostoevsky, “At first, art imitates life. Then life will imitate art. Then life will find its very existence from the arts.” There exists, therefore, a reciprocal dynamic between life and art. Art was born out of Life, but Life derives its soul from Art. In this sense, Life gave life to Art, and Art gave life to Life; and without Art there is no Life. Over time, an accumulation of pieces of literary art presented the need to classify them. Such classification systems first originated (like many great ideas) in ancient Greece. And these categories are what we now call “genres.” What is interesting to note is that the number of genres in Ancient Greece, namely, poetry, prose, and drama (each with its own sub-divisions), was significantly less than the multitude that we have today. Laden with this piece of information, one may be curious to know how and why that happened. As I sit and ponder, my gaze moves to the window and the tree in my garden; and this tree evokes a train of thought ... A sapling grows, absorbing energy from its environment, developing branches upon branches, its trunk thickening. Leaves emerge, and buds, which bloom into beautiful flowers and fruits. Each raw fruit ripens, slowly growing to its full size and vibrant colour. And then, inevitably, it starts to rot, falling to the ground with a thud, mixing with the very soil that made it. This growing tree could be used as an analogy to understand the evolution of genres. We started with the first few classifications, which developed with the influence of the environment, time, and the power of human creativity, forming new branches to accommodate new leaves and new fruits. Various writing styles used together, giving rise to a piece altogether different from anything written before. David Fishelov, in his article “The Birth of a Genre” describes in great detail the emergence of new genres, substantiating his claims with examples. He writes how the birth of a genre is marked by translations, adaptations, or parodies of an existing piece of literature. These ‘transformed’ texts serve as stimuli for future literary works and while these new works may bear some distinct semblance to existing texts (or, generic categories), they are inherently different from any past form of writings and don’t fit into any pre-existing genre. The birth of a genre is a much less dramatic and a lot

more gradual process than it is believed to be. In his treatise Poetics, Aristotle writes, “Tragedy advanced by slow degrees; each new element that showed itself was in turn developed. Having passed through many changes, it found its natural form and there it stopped.” This observation can be extended to any literary genre. A new genre isn’t born ex nihilo, but evolves, gradually, from existing genres and writing styles; each element or characteristic developing over time, influenced by the prevalent culture and the time period. In other words, an existing genre evolves into a new one, morphing into something distinctly similar but altogether different from what it was—again, due to the influence of culture and literary movements. In this sense, one could argue that a genre never truly dies, growing into something new instead of fading away. But whether they die or not, genres must, eventually, face their downfall. The primary reasons for this could be changes in socio-cultural set-ups, technological advancements (mostly in the case of speculative fiction) and decline of popularity— among the general public or the writers for the genre. Despite its downfall, the greatest or the ‘evergreen’ pieces from such a genre may join the Classics shelf and attain, therefore, (potential) eternity. Perhaps literature takes the saying ‘Survival of the fittest’ way too literally.

A Case Study of Magical Realism Magical Realism is a genre where magical elements are a part of an otherwise ordinary setting. These magical elements are presented in a matter-of-fact manner, thereby giving the connotation of reality to something extraordinary. Magical Realism blurs the line between the mundane and the magical, all the while weaving a seamless narrative. Two prominent artistic and cultural moments, Realism and Surrealism, seem to have impacted the emergence of the genre of Magical Realism. Realism focuses on depicting the world with a high degree of accuracy and truth without distortions, and avoiding speculations. It could have influenced Magical Realism’s commitment to describing the extraordinary in ordinary and precise terms. Surrealism on the other hand, could have infused the magical elements in the genre, since it focuses on looking at the world from a subconscious, dream-like perspective. Though Magical Realism is inherently different from mythology, folklore and fantasy, one cannot deny their influence on the genre. Latin American traditional story-telling with mythological elements has also impacted the narrative style of Magical Realism. It has also served as an inspiration for Latin American authors who have developed the genre. One of the greatest works of Magical Realism, One Hundred Years of Solitude, was written by Colombian Novelist and Nobel Laureate in Literature, Gabriel García Márquez, in 1967. The work was inspired by Alejo Carpentier’s 1949 novel, The Kingdom of This World and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. His Grandmother’s natural way of narrating fantastical and supernatural stories— as if they were everyday happenings— taught him to believe in what he wrote, thus making his narrative believable and a masterpiece of Magical Realism. Therefore, great (and in some cases, flawed) past writings serve as stimuli for not just the birth of new genres but also great literary works within a genre. Among contemporaries, Haruki Murakami and Salman Rusdie are notable authors of the genre. Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, for example, is a seamless blend of the real and the metaphysical, making it an exemplary piece of magical realism. His works often reference Japanese folklore and mythology; and like Kafka, contain elements of absurdity intertwined with philosophy. Meanwhile, Rushdie explores the magical in context of political and historical upheaval, often infusing his work with post-colonial themes. In his Midnight’s Children, he explores the themes of individual and national identity in a Post-colonial India, while also shedding light on violence and trauma following the Partition. A tree does not bear fruit till its trunk has thickened, branches strengthened, and flowers fragrant. The evolution of genres and their metamorphosis is slow, involving many authors, artists and cultures, and the slow passage of time. Perhaps this painstaking pace makes the fruit sweeter, the birth of a new genre all the more fascinating. The fruits; no matter what size, taste, or colour; are, at the end of the day, from the same tree, the same soil— the tree of ideas and thoughts that grows in the minds of those cognizant enough to put these abstractions on paper.

Autumn through the Lens of a Kashmiri Poet Recently, I had the privilege of discussing with my grandfather his perspective on the season of turning leaves. He provided a plethora of thoughts and recollections that built an accurate representation of his lifelong affection for this wonderful time of the year. My grandfather’s name is Abdul Gani Manshoor. He is a writer and an academic whose works specialise in languages Urdu and Kashmiri. His writings have been heavily influenced by the likes of Sir Mohammed Iqbal and Mahjoor. I decided to inquire him regarding his ideas of Fall since I was curious about a poet’s viewpoint on this season. When questioned about his thoughts regarding Fall, he characterised it as the conclusion of summer. “It symbolises the passing on of youth and the onset of maturity in the life of a man”, he observed. The greenery begins to turn brown, the atmosphere grows more frigid, the fog thickens, and nature goes to rest.” He believes that at this point in life, a person has lost his juvenile frivolity and emotional vulnerability and turns more controlled and resilient. He recognises the lessons Autumn teaches us about superficiality and impermanence— that even the most exquisite blossoms eventually wither and rot into the earth underneath. It additionally reminds us that, like the seasons, our existence follows a cycle and, eventually, we all will perish, similar to the foliage that served their function through the summer. “Is there a secret this season holds?” I asked. “Certainly,” he said. “Autumn represents a lot more than an occasion for harvests in the countryside. It depicts the stages within our lives wherein we shall harvest the rewards of our labours from our youth. And the yield will always be determined by the grade of the work we’ve put in.” But, he added that fall possessed an elegance that neither springtime nor summer could match. The hues of crimson and gold in the Chinars and the dried leaves underfoot, the bonfires that illuminate the chilly nights, and the cacophony of cicadas and songbirds in the crisp air provide a wholesome reminiscence. It is a time of reflection, and for him, the memories of these months of empty branches and clear, starry nights will always be cherished in his perception, shaped by a lifetime of experience.

Poetry That tall old Chinar tree Could never shade us enough For all the branches were cut And the hopes of building treehouses too The tree became morose and so did I For I lost an amusement and The tree, its place in the hearts Little did it know about the mourning hearts Mine, the birds’ and my grandma’s The tree now saw the world as it is The symbol of ruthlessness and betrayal And decided to leave those unmoved people Who have no time for love Or to breathe a word of comfort I looked on with doleful eyes While the heart yearned for the Chinar and cried Oh Chinar, hear me out I shall reunite with you at the far end The place where trees and hearts can grow unbound The place where lost love can be found.

The Robin The Robin The dawn chorus Those wings have a purpose Opposing the frivolous Far from it Or akin We may never know Overlook anomalies Instinct decides all Or rather the hand that made all Before endless sleep? From where the swiftest wings cannot return The Robin in you By and by repairs to the branches of death Is it a stop? Is it the end? This robin does not bother For such subtle reality Busy with the worldly fruit Fate can be callous Cope with it It too has a path Be the robin But consider Consider reality This fleeting opulence Is just a hint Of the paramount happenings That are, or rather should be, manifest This blatancy lies Obscured in our eyes But the robin flaps on It’s the impulse Clamps on a worm And doesn’t let go

Prose Poetry

Hope is Yellow Objectively, dear reader, hope is hoax just like time is truth. It is autumn and the poets affirm that spring shall soon be here in its glory. The crimson in the air and grey skies have also not been spared. Extended metaphors suck the marrow out of the hollow trees in fall. The Chinars outside my window with their leaves turning yellow and brown in the melancholy of October stare straight into my eyes and I am 13 again. Autumn teaches you patience, they say. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, you know. The leaves die, the colours fade but hope stays; only to revive and remind us that there’s a new beginning on its way. Like how the misery eventually ends even if it might feel like the world is crumbling in on us sometimes and it is all a part of the bigger plan. Spring is the destination and misery is the way to reach it. Suffering is indispensable for success. Breaking and falling and dying is terrible but it’s all a part of the process. And autumn is just that – death – so that spring spreads the wings of revival. Like a bud blooming into a flower and a caterpillar metamorphosing into a butterfly. Autumn is more than grey skies and gloom. It’s not life’s way to offer cul-de-sacs. There are no full stops and abrupt transformations and spring is not the hero you think it is. A bud feeds off the endosperm for the flower to bloom and the caterpillar digests itself to metamorphosize into a butterfly. Nothing happens in a vacuum and nothing is as simplistic as it seems. It is shallow to think that autumn exists so that it could give way to spring. It is to say that spring is the consequence of fall and not the product of its labour of love, contrary to how it has been branded to us since ages. Autumn is not about dying and dead ends. It is the frolic of freedom. The leaves dying isn’t sad. It’s essential. The rot it brings is pulchritudinous. It demands celebration. Autumn demonstrates how to let go of things that hold us down even if they might essentially seem like a part of our being. If there are people, ways and thoughts you can’t let go of that pull you down then maybe know that dreading over it alone won’t bring spring your way. It’s the part of the journey to shake the dead leaves off your dainty self. The way to grieve, says autumn, is to passionately be in pain. Let it turn you crimson. Brown and red. Barren and desolate. But you take your time to cure your wounds and do that without shame. And the promise is true. After you heal yourself it’ll mark the beginning of spring as it’s the journey that counts and not the destination. And dear reader, you will soon see that hope is yellow, time relative and truth multifaceted.

Annual Inter School Debate

2023

DPS hosts its 3rd Annual Inter-School Debate inviting schools from all over the valley to take part in intellectual discourse. A total of twelve schools participated in this event with twenty-four strongwilled speakers battling it out in verbal muneras. The agenda that the participants had to tackle in this edition was,

“The House Believes That The Evolution and Modernisation Of Kashmiri Culture Should Be Appreciated.” The participants were faced with the dilemma of defending what could be stagnation in the name of cultural preservation or standing with what could be cultural dilution disguised as modernization and globalisation. The debate itself was quite polarised as we had both emotional, moral speakers and cold statisticians from both the opposition and the proposition.

The event started off with a brief welcome to all and an introduction of the accomplished judges— Dr Suhail Ahmed and Dr Masood A. Malik, followed by the prayer. After this the anchors for the event gave an outline of the agenda, highlighting arguments supporting both the opposition and the proposition. Following which they informed the participants and the audience about the procedure and order of interaction of the debate. The debate had both speakers from the same school present their arguments. Each speaker had three minutes to present their side of the argument. After the completion of all speeches from all schools, a rebuttal round was held which followed the same procedure and order except that individual speaking time was one minute. At the end when all the speeches were said and all the points were made, there was a long wait for the tallying of marks. Finally, after much deliberation, the winner was announced as the audience erupted in cheers. Syed Imaad Hussain Photographs: Syed Ahmad Ibaad Bukhari, Zainab Iqbal
