How the process typically works
1. Eligibility is based on impact, not diagnosis
Having a disability doesn’t automatically mean you’ll qualify for the NDIS. The NDIS looks at how your disability affects your ability to complete everyday activities and live independently.
2. Strong evidence makes a difference
The most successful applications clearly explain how a disability affects daily life, not just the medical condition itself. Reports from specialists and allied health professionals are often important.
3. The process can take time
Gathering evidence, completing assessments and receiving a decision can take weeks or months. Starting early can help reduce stress and avoid rushed decisions.
4. Receiving a plan is just the beginning
If you’re approved, you’ll still need to understand your funding, choose providers and organise supports. Many people need guidance through this stage.
5. Your support can change over time
Your needs may change, providers may change, and your plan can be reviewed. The NDIS is designed to evolve with you, not be a one-time decision.

What can the NDIS help fund?
The NDIS funds supports that are related to your disability and help you achieve your goals. Funding is grouped into three areas, called budgets.
Funding for everyday assistance to help you live as independently as possible
2. Capacity Building
Funding to build your skills, confidence and independence over time.
3. Capital Supports
Funding for higher-cost items that improve independence safety or accessibility.
What the NDIS does not cover
Everyday living expenses
Cost everyone has regarless of disability, such as rent, groceries, utilities and household bills.

• Personal care and daily activities
• Support workers
• Community participation
• Some transport supports
• Everyday consumables
May include:
• Occupational therapy
• Physiotherapy
• Speech pathology

Not everyone qualifies for the NDIS. Even if you aren’t eligible, support may still be available through:
Community organisations and local councils
Social groups, community transport, carer support and local programs.
Health services
Public hospitals, community health services, mental health services and rehabilitation programs.
Education and employment supports
School supports, disability employment services and training programs.
Aged care services (for people aged 65 and over)
Home care, respite care and aged care services.
Private providers
Therapy, support workers and specialist services paid privately.

What the NDIS can fund depends on your individual circumstances and your plan. If you’re unsure, speak with your support coordinator, plan manager, or the NDIA.
How does the NDIS decide what it will fund?
The NDIS doesn’t fund every support. Instead, it assesses whether a support is considered reasonable and necessary under the NDIS Act. In general, a support should:
• Relate to your disability
• Help you pursue your goals and independence
• Represent good value for money
• Be effective and likely to benefit you
• Not be more appropriately funded by another government service, such as healthcare, education or housing
This is one of the main reasons some supports are approved while others are not.

Eligibility & applying
The NDIS is not automatic. You need to meet specific criteria.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS is designed for people whose disability is permanent or likely to be permanent and has a significant impact on everyday life.
To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet age and residency requirements, and meet the disability requirements, early intervention requirements, or both.
Generally, you may be eligible if you need ongoing support to complete daily activities, communicate, move around safely, learn new skills, or participate in work, education or community life.
Important: Having a diagnosis alone does not automatically mean you qualify. !

What is your plan?
After your Planning conversation, the NDIA creates an NDIS plan based on your disability, support needs and goals.
Think of your plan as a roadmap. It outlines the supports you’ve been approved for, how much funding is available and how that funding can be used.

Table category
Each state and territory section has several directories. These six service directories include: In-home & Community Support, Therapists & Specialists, Accommodation, Advisors, Equipment & Technology and Mental Health.
The tables list a number of ‘verified’ providers. These providers have confirmed with DPS that the information displayed is correct.
1. Service region
Providers are listed by service region. They’ll be listed under ‘Providers servicing [state or territory]’ if no region was selected or they service the whole state/territory. Please refer to the state/territory map for the boundaries of each service region.
2. Type of support and services
These lists include both registered and unregistered NDIS providers in alphabetical order, detailing whether they provide Core, Capital, or Capacity supports under the NDIS. It also indicates some of the specific services they deliver.
3. Delivery of services and age groups
The tables show if the provider can come to your house or school to deliver services or works from a set location, such as a medical practice. It also indicates what age groups they can deliver services to.
4. Paid advertising
A featured listing, with or without a website, indicates the provider has paid to have their services listed in this guide.
