Mapping It Out: Excitement, Logic, and the Young Mind

Prevention Overview

A developing brain is naturally wired to crave excitement before their "brakes" are fully functional. Because of this, emotional and social factors can completely override logic. A teen alone might make a safe choice; that same teen with friends may act entirely different.

The emotion and reward center. It develops early and is fully active in teens, driving them to seek excitement, novelty, and social connection.

The center for impulse control, logic, and longterm consequences.

This part matures much slower and isn't fully wired in teens yet.

A consistent presence centered around communication and unconditional support is one of the single most powerful substance prevention tools.

The OARS Framework offers four strategies to create a safe, respectful space for your child to open up.

Open-Ended Questions Avoid questions that result in a one-word answer. Swap "How was school?" for more thought engaging answers.

Start Early, Practice Real Scenarios Initiate casual conversations during everyday moments and actively role-play practical refusal skills so they know how to handle peer pressure.

Use honest, evidencebased information rather than scare tactics. Remind your teen that the vast majority of their peers actually choose not to use.

Avoid rigid "just say no" ultimatums that shut down communication; instead, listen openly to understand their unique situation (whether they are curious or already struggling) so you can provide the right level of support.

Root Cause Analysis: Connecting Mental Health and Substance Use

When emotional pain or anxiety goes unnoticed or untreated, young people may look for ways to cope on their own. This is where "self-medicating" begins.

What To Look For Constant Worry: Excessive anxiety about multiple areas of life (grades, appearance, friendships).

Avoidance: Steering clear of social circles or places that trigger anxiety.

Perfectionism: Self-criticism or an unrealistic standard of perfection.

Persistent Mood Changes: A prolonged sadness, irritability, or "blank" mood for over two weeks.

Social Withdrawal: Pulling away from friends and family.

Clearing the Air: Understanding Nicotine and Vapes

Tobacco, Nicotine and Vaping

Modern nicotine products now span a variety of formats, ranging from oral pouches to high-potency vapes. Today's vapes contain significantly more nicotine than older tobacco products did. They are packed into compact designs that often mimic everyday items and are packed with flavor.

Vaping

A highly addictive stimulant found in tobacco or created synthetically. Vape products use concentrated nicotine salts that deliver the chemical to the brain faster than traditional cigarettes.

The act of inhaling and exhaling a chemically heated aerosol produced by an electric device. The heated liquid typically contains high concentrations of nicotine, artificial flavorings, and chemicals.

E-Cigarettes / Vape Pens

Nicotine Pouches

Battery-powered devices that heat liquid nicotine into an inhalable aerosol. The single-use devices don't require refilling and are easily discarded, making them convenient and concealable.

Small, smokeless packets placed between the gum and cheek where nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream. They are odorless, spitless and easily undetected, yet still deliver high doses of nicotine.

Familiar flavor Hundreds of flavors are available on the market including mango, watermelon, mint, berry, tropical blends.

As of January 2026, a voter-approved ban on flavored nicotine products is in effect in Denver, prohibiting the sale of flavored vaping products within city limits.

Tools and Resources to Clear the Path The chemicals in e-cigarettes can damage the lungs and heart while increasing the risk of future substance use. Quitting is tough due to withdrawal symptoms like anxiety and mood swings, but early intervention makes a huge difference.

Watch for subtle physical and behavioral shifts so you can proactively step in with supportive guidance before experimentation turns into a habit.

A pediatrician can provide credible information about vaping dangers, screen for concerns and help develop intervention strategies including quitting materials and treatments.

Alcohol is the most common drug that young people use in the United States.

Ask your child if an adult will be present at the party or if there will be drinking.

Remind them of your expectations and rules about alcohol. Let them know they can say “no” or text a code word if they’re put in an uncomfortable situation.

“What if my friends ask me to drink?”

Helping your child say “no” to peer pressure is one of the most important things you can do to keep them alcohol-free. Think of ways to handle this situation, whether it is simply saying, “No, I don’t drink,” or thinking of another excuse.

“You drink alcohol, so why can’t I?” Make a distinction between alcohol use among children and adults. Teen bodies and brains are still growing so alcohol has an impact on their judgment and health.

Drinking in moderation is not harmful to adult bodies.

Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a weekly group program designed for families and friends of individuals struggling with substance use.

CBD

Hemp-derived

The main psychoactive compound within the cannabis plant. The substance primarily responsible for the "high" effect.

The second most active ingredient in cannabis. It can influence mood or anxiety, but it will not alter cognitive function, motor skills, or produce a euphoric high.

A "hemp-derived" product can be entirely natural, or it can be a semi-synthetic cannabinoid (like a Delta8 vape or gummy).

Changing Landscapes: THC, CBD, and the Latest Data

Marijuana is now the leading substance for which youth seek treatment, accounting for 55% of admissions to recovery programs.

Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome is characterized by uncontrollable vomiting, and requires 4–6 months of total quitting to heal.

THC is the #1 substance found in completed youth suicides in Colorado since commercialization began in 2014.

The THC content in today's cannabis is substantially higher than what was available in previous decades.

Approximately 93% of THC products found in Colorado dispensaries now exceed 15% strength, compared to ~4% in 2010.

Cannabis today looks like easily hidden, flavorful vape pens, beverages that look like regular sodas or energy drinks, and branded merchandise from dispensaries.

Seek Professional Help Early

Lock up cannabis products in a secure location out of reach of children. Be especially cautious with edibles like gummies and baked goods, as they look like regular treats and pose a severe danger to kids.

Educate yourself and your child about the health risks of cannabis use, including its potential for addiction.

Make sure they understand that one in six teenagers who use marijuana will become addicted.

If you suspect a problem, act quickly by contacting your pediatrician or a local adolescent substance use treatment provider. Early intervention is critical, and professional treatment is highly effective.

Slippery Slopes: Hidden Dangers in the Medicine Cabinet

Prescription and Over-the-Counter

Common medicine cabinet products can pose real dangers to children when misused or accidentally consumed. In some cases, misusing OTC medications may serve as a substitute for some individuals who are addicted to another substance but can’t obtain it.

Cough and cold medicines These contain dextromethorphan (DXM), which can cause hallucinations and a high. Some also contain codeine, an opioid that can be toxic. Monitoring the Future survey data showed that 5% of 10th graders reported using cough medicine to get high.

Allergy medications Excessive doses of antihistamines like Benadryl can cause hallucinations and even be fatal. Social media challenges have encouraged youth to take excessive amounts specifically for the hallucinogenic effect.

Pain relievers Ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, and acetaminophen are safe when used correctly, but large amounts can poison the body, causing anything from vomiting to kidney damage, seizures, and coma.

Steroids and laxatives

Fruity gummies and chewables appeal to kids, and we rarely think of them as dangerous. But fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and minerals can be toxic or even fatal in high doses. Wellness trends can also tempt health-conscious teens to assume that if one is good, five is better.

Steroids may be misused by teens trying to build muscle, with serious consequences including stunted growth and organ damage. Laxatives may be misused by young people with disordered eating.

Accidental overdoses of GLP-1 weight loss drugs are also being reported, a risk likely to grow as pill forms become available.

Store Everything Up, Away, and Out Of Sight Keep all prescriptions, vitamins, and supplements completely out of sight and reach of children, never leaving them on counters or bedsides. Always lock safety caps securely and remind houseguests to keep their bags and coats out of reach as well.

Model Healthy Habits Promptly and properly dispose of any expired or unused medications to keep your home safe. Use prescriptions only as directed to show children that pills are not the immediate solution for every minor ache or stress.

Talk Early and Often, In AgeAppropriate Ways Explain what medicine is, never call it candy, and teach younger children to only eat things given to them by a trusted adult. For older kids, discuss proper dosing directly so they understand the serious dangers of medicine misuse.

The Hidden Cliff: Understanding Fentanyl and its Risks Fentanyl is a prescription drug that is also made and used illegally. Pharmaceutical prescription fentanyl is used in surgery or to treat patients with severe pain. The main public health concern is over illegally manufactured fentanyl and related compounds.

It exists in different forms, including liquid and powder, making it easily blended with other drugs.

High Potency

Fentanyl is about 50x stronger than heroin, and up to 100x stronger than morphine which means it is more likely to cause overdose.

Small, Lethal Doses

A lethal dose of fentanyl is about 2mg, or the size of 5-7 grains of salt, or the tip of a pencil.

Supply Contamination

Fentanyl is present in a significant portion of the drug supply. It is often undetectable, and frequently mixed into other substances without the user's knowledge.

This life-saving medicine can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, and you can get it for free at any Denver Public Library or by visiting stoptheclockcolorado.org.

Before picking up a device, ask the following questions and if the answers reveal a clear intent like socializing, studying, or taking a creative break the screen time is fine. If it's driven by boredom, habit, or avoidance, it's time to choose a better alternative.

Displacement Theory The phenomenon where spending 8+ hours per day on screen time replaces real-world activities including sleep, physical activity, and face-to-face time with family and friends.

When To Be Concerned Life disruption: Screen time interferes with school, sleep, or relationships.

Emotional dependence: They become anxious or upset when offline.

Time distortion: They lose track of time while using devices.

Social media offers youth spaces for community, self-expression, and learning, but it also introduces real pressure around mental health and safety. Because online spaces blur the line between connection and risk, understanding how youth navigate these platforms is essential.

Finding a Secure Foothold: Building Trust and Digital Literacy Effective monitoring requires balance: you want to keep your child safe without invading their privacy or damaging trust. A balanced approach involves: Knowing where they are online: which apps and communities they visit Knowing who they're talking to: their online friends, followers, and contacts Understanding what their activities are: whether they're gaming, streaming, using social media, or messaging.

Knowing how to read the web is just as important as reading a book. We need to learn how to spot trustworthy websites by checking who wrote the piece, looking for facts to back it up, and seeing if other reliable sources say the same thing.

Families should be alert to red flags that indicate unsafe or exploitative online interactions. These include:

Requests for money or gifts, and threats or blackmail.

Tell a guardian, school based mental health provider, or another trusted adult about the situation right away so they can help you navigate it.

Take screenshots of the interaction to save as evidence, and then immediately block the individual without responding further.

Report the user directly to the platform and contact local law enforcement immediately if you suspect any form of exploitation.

What Cyberbullying Looks Like Today While peer conflicts have always existed, the digital age has transformed how youth experience harassment, making it harder to escape. Unlike traditional bullying, online cruelty can follow a child directly into their home, amplifying its emotional impact through permanent and highly public platforms.

Digital Citizenship The practice of navigating the online world safely and respectfully by understanding that digital actions have permanent, realworld consequences. Involvement is key: ask “How would this classmate feel if they saw that comment? What if that post was shared with their family or teachers?”

Research from the ABCD Study found: 10% of youth report being cyberbullied, while only 1% report perpetrating cyberbullying LGBTQ+ youth are nearly three times more likely to be cyberbullied than their peers Girls are more likely to be victims while boys are more likely to be perpetrators.

Your non-judgmental support is crucial.

Bullying is never the victim's fault, regardless of what they posted or said.

Document everything, take screenshots before they're deleted. Block the people doing the bullying and report them using built-in reporting tools. If threats or explicit content are involved, contact law enforcement.

Approach the situation with a calm, nonjudgmental conversation about what happened. Help them understand the impact of their actions on others by asking them to consider how the victim feels and what consequences the bullying might have. Set clear consequences, such as loss of device.

Beyond immediate listening, protect your child’s well-being by monitoring their mental health for signs of anxiety or depression and seeking professional support if needed. Help them rebuild confidence by processing the incident without blame and adjusting social media usage.
