Durham Parks and Recreation provides opportunities for our community to Play More!

GREETINGS

F R O M D U R H A M PA R K S & R E C R E AT I O N ' S D I R E C T O R As the heat of summer cools and fall approaches, the upcoming months are a great time to get outside and enjoy Durham’s trails and greenways. I have several recent and exciting developments to share about the expansion and improvement of our trail system in Durham. The first one is the completion of a long-awaited project, the extension of the American Tobacco Trail from NC 54 at Fayetteville Street to the Chatham County line, which includes a brand new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-40. The opening of this new section of trail will be celebrated on Saturday, October 12, from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Streets of Southpoint Mall, 6910 Fayetteville Street (in the parking lot behind Southpoint Cinemas). I invite you to celebrate this event with us and explore the brand new section of trail! City Council recently showed their support for the extension of the West Ellerbee Creek trail by approving the funding for 2013-14 to complete the land acquisition for the trail. Also, Sandy Creek Park will be getting a nature trail within the upcoming year, thanks to a grant received through the Durham Open Space and Trails Commission. The “Our Trails, Our Town” campaign was established last year and is a long-term plan to provide strategic direction for planning, safety, management, promotions, and use of Durham’s trails. One great way residents are now involved is through the Trail Watch Volunteer Program. Residents who are interested in being a positive presence and extra “eyes and ears” on the trail can sign up to become a trained volunteer by contacting the Durham Police Department Community Services Bureau at (919) 560-4438 ext. 29288. You can also follow Capital Broadcasting Company's lead by participating in Durham Parks and Recreation’s Adopt-A-Trail/Park program. Learn more about it on page 8 of this Play More or email malgosia.atkinson@ durhamnc.gov. We are proud of the City’s greenway system, but of course that is just one part of what makes Durham a great place to live. The City has recently been named a Playful City USA for the fifth year in a row by the non-profit KaBOOM!. Our efforts to reduce childhood obesity were recognized by the National League of Cities for the completion of key health and wellness goals of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move! Cities, Towns, and Counties” initiative. These recognitions reflect our hard work and dedication to the City and to Durham Parks and Recreation’s mission to provide opportunities for our community to Play More. I hope you will find a way to Play More on our trails and greenways this fall.

ADOPT-A-PARK and ADOPT-A-TRAIL Programs Contact: Mal Atkinson (919) 560-4355, ext. 27205, malgosia.atkinson@durhamnc.gov

A Great Way to Give Back - Adopt a Park or Trail! Volunteers from all over the community support Durham’s parks and trails through the AdoptA-Park and Adopt-A-Trail (APAT) programs. This program is a great opportunity for you or your organization to make a positive difference in your community. Since 2003, community groups have supported their community by adopting parks and trail segments in Durham through the Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Trail (APAT) programs. DPR manages nearly 1,800 acres of parkland in more than 68 parks and more than 20 miles of greenways, and we’re still growing. The assistance we receive from adopting agencies is invaluable as we make every effort to care for our natural resources. The City of Durham’s Parks and Recreation and General Services Departments provide routine park maintenance and repairs; however, the adopting individuals and organizations give the park or trail the extra care and attention it needs. Adopters work on a variety of projects of their choosing. They have assisted with numerous cleanup, landscaping, and facility improvement projects. Any individual or organization interested in bettering our parks and trails can adopt. Contact Mal Atkinson, the Adopt-A-Park and Adopt-A-Trail program coordinator, at 919-560-4355 or malgosia.atkinson@durhamnc.gov. She will be happy to discuss details of the program, which parks and trails are currently available for adoption, or any questions you may have about the program.

American Tobacco Trail bridge and trail extension opening soon! This long-awaited project, begun in spring of 2012, has extended the American Tobacco Trail from its previous endpoint on NC-54 at Fayetteville Street to the Chatham County line. The length of trail constructed by this project is approximately 4.2 miles and includes a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-40. The pedestrian bridge is located just west of Fayetteville Street and the connection to the trail heading south is conveniently located at the Streets at Southpoint Mall. The American Tobacco Trail is also part of a much longer trail system which runs along the length of the east coast from Florida to Maine. The headquarters office for that trail has recently been relocated to Durham. The construction of this trail segment and bridge is being recognized nationally as it completes a key link in this East Coast Greenway Trail.

Bridge construction in progress

Funding for the project is being provided from a variety of sources including federal funds from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the City of Durham Sidewalk Bond fund. The grand opening of the trail and bridge will be held on Saturday, October, 12, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Streets of Southpoint Mall, 6910 Fayetteville Street (in the parking lot behind Southpoint Cinemas). The public is welcome to attend. Even if you can't go, grab your bikes or running shoes and check out the new sections of trail and the bridge for yourself! DURHAM PARKS AND RECREATION

Our Trails, Our Town Erosion forces temporary closure of Third Fork Creek Trail sections Durham’s trails are frequently mentioned as one of the city’s top attractions, with nearly three of four residents rating city greenway trails very highly. That’s one reason why we are as disappointed as most of its users to be forced to close sections of the Third Fork Creek Trail due to ongoing erosion that worsened during recent heavy rains. Durham's trails are often near streams where recreational use is highest, but also it’s a great use of flood plain land and protects riparian areas from other development. While some erosion is anticipated in active flood plains, the main channel flow of Third Fork Creek has shifted more than anticipated. This has caused erosion that has seriously damaged the section of the trail between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and Spreading Oak Court, making it dangerous for users. It is also affecting the two sewer lines that are adjacent to the trail.

Safety tips to help us all enjoy our trails To make sure your trails experience is a pleasant one – please exercise the following safety tips offered by the Durham Police Department. •

Know your route and pay attention to your surroundings.

If possible, run, walk or bike with a friend. If you choose to go alone, let someone know when you leave, what your route will be, and what time you expect to return.

Carry a cell phone with you and if you see any suspicious behavior, please call 911.

While the southern half of the trail can still be used, the four access points between MLK Parkway and Cardinal Drive are closed for safety reasons. This entire section of trail has been closed to minimize risk to trail users. Emergency work on the trail is in process and complete repairs on the damaged section of the Third Fork Creek are anticipated by late October, weather permitting. At that point, the trail could be reopened. However, a more permanent repair would involve returning the majority of stream flow to the main channel of Third Fork Creek -- a much more complicated and costly proposal, requiring environmental permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the N.C. Division of Water Quality. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and invite you to get to know Durham’s other trails. For more information about other trails and repair plans for Third Fork Creek Trail, go to www.DPRPlayMore.org, call 919-560-4355 or email Rosetta Radtke at Rosetta.Radtke@ DurhamNC.gov.

Dog Parks

While regular leash walks provide a level of exercise that promotes good dog health, access for off-leash play and socialization is equally important. • All dogs MUST be registered with DPR annually • To ensure that we provide a healthy environment for all participants, we have adopted the vaccination requirements recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association. Current vaccination history for: 1. Rabies (1 or 3 year) 2. Distemper/parvo (1 or 3 year) 3. Bordetella (1 year) 4. Fecal exam-negative (1 year) *We also accept titer results in lieu of vaccinations except for rabies (state law). When these requirements are met, a DPR dog park tag is assigned. All dogs must wear their current DPR tag while playing in the park. Fees: Tags are valid for one year. Beginning July 1, 2013 tags will be valid January 1-December 31. Tags purchased beginning July 1, 2013 will expire December 31, 2014. Online registration for dog park tags is now available. Register online with barcode #11511, or contact DPR for more information. Maintain, Don’t Gain

Like many North Carolinians, Durham County residents typically gain between 1 and 5 pounds each holiday season. It may not sound like much, but most people who gain weight during the holidays never manage to return to their pre-holiday weight. The statewide Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina movement aims to help you keep weight gain at bay during the holidays. Workshops and weekly weigh-ins will be offered.
