What was CFLRC’s biggest success this year?
Lyon Park Teens made it to the Semi-Finals for Night Flight this year. Our team was coached by our Facility Attendant Walter Minor This was a great achievement for them and we celebrated them with a Pizza Party.
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
We have a Holiday Flea Market in November in collaboration with The West End Community Foundation. We utilize the auditorium during their Food Pantry and give away free clothes, shoes, and other items that have been donated DPR gives away free Turkeys to the community during the market as well.
What was CFLRC’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
Our center is continuously creating these moments. We always think outside the box to offer a variety of programs including multigenerational programs in partnership with My Durham, various programs for individuals with disabilities like Dance the Night Away, Life Skills 101, pizza game night and BINGO, as well as open gym times for youth and teens, mature adult programs like pickleball, “Let’s Get Together,” table tennis, and enrichment programs for toddlers like music and movement.

What was Edison Johnson’s biggest success this year?
Our most significant success this year has been our partnerships. By collaborating with the community, we have created memorable programming For instance, Hillside High School provided volunteers to support Fright Night, while BJ's, Target, and Harris Teeter generously donated candy for the event. These partnerships have been instrumental in enhancing our programming efforts.
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
Fright Night stands out as our favorite event It allows us to serve the people of Durham by providing a safe and fun event that supports over 600 participants annually.
What was Edison Johnson’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
This year, our most significant mission moment at Edison Johnson was the successful expansion of our programming, which has had a profound impact on our community. By focusing on special events and increasing our outreach to patrons, we have created fun, enriching, and inclusive programs, experiences, and spaces that contribute to a safer, happier, and healthier Bull City.

What was Holton’s biggest success this year?
This year, we doubled the attendance of our Trunk-or-Treat event, as well as increased youth programming, fitness programming, and adding a Summer Camp to the center
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
We had a great time working with the Solid Waste Department on the Upcycling Kids Program, which taught kids to work with their hands and reuse things around the house to a create new projects.
What was Holton’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
Hosting the annual Senior Games Opening and Closing ceremonies at Holton brought so much joy to the community and participants. With speakers and incredible performances, we were able to create a fun environment for the people who participated in the games.

What was Campus Hill’s biggest success this year?
Our most significant success this year has been in programming and special events. We have increased our offerings by adding 15 new programs, attracting countless new patrons. The large-scale events we have organized have provided an excellent opportunity to market to a broader audience, thereby bringing in more participants..
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
The Back to School Bash stands out as our favorite event. Partnering with NBA player Trey Murphy III over the past year has been a tremendous boost for the community This collaboration has allowed us to provide more opportunities for school supplies and has given the kids a chance to see a public figure they recognize, helping them realize that they come from the same place.
What was Campus Hill’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
This year, our most significant mission moment at Campus Hills was the successful expansion of our programming, which has had a profound impact on our community. By focusing on special events and increasing our outreach to patrons, we have created fun, enriching, and inclusive programs, experiences, and spaces. These efforts have significantly contributed to making Durham a safer, happier, and healthier place.
WALLTOWN PARK RECREATION CENTER WALLTOWN PARK RECREATION CENTER
What was Walltown’s biggest success this year?
This year, we launched two impactful events - Walltown Fit and College Flex. Walltown Fit is a comprehensive health and wellness event tailored for adults, focusing on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. College Flex is an engaging program for youth and teens that explores all aspects of college life, including admissions, academic paths, and the cultural experience of fraternity and sorority life.
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
College Flex was our favorite! We had the opportunity to use our creativity and work closely with the My Durham Teen Zone team to bring the vision to life.
What was Walltown’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
This year, the team worked to ensure Walltown is a safe and fun place for participants to come experience fellowship, receive information, and engage in inclusive and enriching activities
W.D. HILL RECREATION CENTER W.D. HILL RECREATION CENTER
What was W.D. Hill’s biggest success this year?
Our biggest success this year was having our center selected by the General Services Department to be the recipient of a $297,000 Energy Efficient Block Grant The center will be designated as a 'Resilience Hub' in the City of Durham. The designation will provide the facility with a battery energy storage unit, ground mount solar canopies, a microgrid system as well as roof top solar panels. The goal of the Hub is to provide the community with opportunities to adapt and recover from climate related events, in addition to providing pertinent programming. The project was featured in the October 2024 edition of Rolling Stone magazine
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
Recently, approved by the City of Durham and Durham County Health, W.D. Hill will be one of the units in DPR to be featured in a interlocal agreement to provide an array services to address local health disparities. We’ve also partnered with the Cultural and Public Arts Program and the Durham Youth Works program on a community mural at our playground The mural, developed by a local artist and teen artists, reflects present day use of the recreation center.
What was W.D. Hill’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
Our biggest mission moment of the year has been our role in the formation of a Health Hub, monthly series of workshops, speakers and hands on learning for the citizens of Durham. We are particularly proud of assisting local stakeholders to create a Prostate Health Support Group.
WEAVER STREET RECREATION CENTER WEAVER STREET RECREATION CENTER
What was Weaver Street’s biggest success this year?
Our biggest success this year was implementing the new vision and purpose for Weaver Street Recreation Center of being a Programming and Resource Hub for the Cornwallis and surrounding community. We were able to partner with several organizations to implement targeted programs that make meaningful change in the lives of residents.
What was your favorite collaboration or event his year?
Our favorite collaboration this year was with GRACED, Inc. to provide both a Mentoring Program for Teens and a STEAM based program focusing on Life Readiness Both of these programs provide teens within the Cornwallis Community a positive role model that to give life advice and a person to talk to that is outside of their everyday environment. Additionally, these programs provide teens with skills that give them a solid base to begin their lives and assist with breaking generational cycles.
What was Weaver Street’s biggest “Mission Moment?”
Our biggest impact this year was providing a safe place in the community for youth and teens. Often times, the recreation center is the only place that youth in the Cornwallis Community are able to feel completely safe in their surroundings and are able to let their "guard" down. This allows our staff and community partners to form close relationships with them to provide positive guidance. Weaver Street is the escape for most of our youth and teens where they can come to feel like kids
