DPAC sends at least one lead judge, and at least two year-round judges to review each participating high school musical theater production. Scores submitted by both lead and yearround judges determine who places at the top of each awards category. Lead judges gather in the spring to discuss all submitted scores and feedback, and together they select finalists and winners in the eight production awards categories. During this meeting, lead judges also select the Best Actor and Best Actress finalists.
The DPAC Rising Star Awards are grateful to this incredible group of year-round and lead judges, who together reviewed 44 high school musical theater productions this school year. Without these dedicated supporters of our program,The DPAC Rising Star Awards could not take place.

America first fell in love with CLAY AIKEN’S extraordinary talent and undeniable charisma on the second season of Fox’s American Idol. His journey on the show became a cultural phenomenon, drawing nearly 40 million viewers for the finale – the highest-rated episode of live, regularly-scheduled television of the 21st Century. These astonishing numbers cemented Clay’s permanent status as a household name.
In the first seven years of his career he racked up a combined six million in album sales, a number only amplified by tens of millions more who tuned in to his performances on TV and solidified his status as a beloved artist and a national treasure.
Beyond his recording accomplishments, Clay has captivated audiences on stages across America. Throughout his career, he has sold millions of tickets over 12 national tours and performed on some of the biggest and most prestigious stages in the world.
Clay has also excelled beyond the pop music world. His Broadway debut in 2008 in Monty Python’s Spamalot earned rave reviews, with Newsweek praising his “fresh-faced charm and a surprisingly strong singing voice.” He later returned to Broadway in 2018 for the co-headlining show Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show, which The New York Times hailed as “a Christmas miracle.”
Beyond his entertaining career, Clay has remained deeply committed to giving back and has been a tireless advocate for children with disabilities. In 2003, he built upon his pre-Idol experience as an elementary special education teacher by co-founding the National Inclusion Project to help advocate and provide for the inclusion of children with disabilities.
As a UNICEF ambassador, Clay dedicated ten years to improving the lives of children worldwide. To advocate for child protection and access to education around the world, he traveled to disaster zones and war zones in Afghanistan, Somalia, Indonesia, Mexico, Uganda, and Kenya.

ALEX FLUKER recently completed her freshman year at UNC Greensboro, where she is thankful to be a member of the Lloyd International Honors College and Undergraduate Research Fellows Program double majoring in Economics and Marketing. While her academic focus is set on business, she has also been passionately and actively pursuing opportunities to stay involved in the theater arts.
This past year,Alex performed in a gender-bent Ordinary Days workshop, directed by UNC Greensboro senior William Houck, as Jenny (Jason). Most recently, she performed in Theatre Raleigh Sings Motown, directed by Lauren Tompkins. This summer, she will work as an acting instructor at the Lune Spark Center for Creativity.
Alex is deeply grateful to everyone in her life who has loved, educated, and “screlted” show tunes with her.
CONOR KRUGER is currently pursuing a BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen at the University of Southern California (Fight on!!!) and a double minor in music production and cinematic arts. He has been actively pursuing his dreams of acting on camera and screenwriting at the cinematic arts school. He loves the friends he has made along the way and has high hopes for his next three years at college.
While musical theater is not his major, he has maintained an active love for singing, songwriting, and performing. He wishes to return to Broadway someday very soon.
