WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to DPAC

It is my great pleasure as your new mayor to welcome you to DPAC!

Like so many Durham residents, I recognize the jewel that DPAC is to Durham and the Triangle region. Though we’ve endured a few changes for everyone’s safety as we’ve attended shows recently, attendees have supported the health-related actions and worn their masks cheerfully. That’s the true spirit

Like so many Durham residents, I recognize the jewel that DPAC is to Durham and the Triangle region.

I’m thrilled to say that DPAC, after more than a decade, is continuing to showcase the energy, the passion and great entertainment with a list of performances that people will travel from miles around to see.

I’m thrilled to say that DPAC, after more than a decade, is continuing to showcase the energy, the passion and great entertainment with a list of performances that people will travel from miles around to see. The awardHAMILTON is set to return for three dynamic weeks in May. If you have seen it before, now is your time to see it again. If you’ve never seen it, trust me and hundreds of thousands of others who have seen the show, you are in for a treat.

This season will feature some of the biggest Broadway, concerts, comedy shows and special events to ever take the DPAC stage. You won’t want to miss the premieres of Disney’s biggest new hit, FROZEN and the winner of ten Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

There are other shows and artists I’m sure you won’t want to miss, including RENT, a perennial rock musical that premiered on Broadway in the 90s, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Hadestown, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, the renowned astrophysicist and author. Those are just a few of the superstar performances that are featured this season.

DPAC fan-favorites and first-time performers will also be taking the stage throughout the upcoming season, including Brandi Carlile, The Temptations and The Four Tops, Steve Martin and Martin Short, and the original Jersey Boy, Frankie Valli

And as usual, all the trappings that come with seeing a Broadway show or concert at DPAC still await you, starting with the beauty of the theater and DPAC’s legendary customer service. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham. It’s as easy as parking and walking to downtown restaurants, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums, or historical sites.

Thank you for choosing DPAC and Durham. Now settle into your seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show.

Welcome from the General Manager

“Welcome to DPAC…”

Since opening in 2008, over five-million guests have heard that greeting as they walked through our doors to experience blockbuster Broadway shows, worldclass concerts, superstar comedians, and many special events including dance, speakers, holiday performances and family shows.

We celebrated our five-millionth guest milestone last February and it was a significant reminder of how important you are, our members and guests. We called this past season, our “Comeback Season” and more than you know we appreciated your words of support, your attendance, and even your patience as we did our best to reopen and juggle a sense of both safety and normalcy.

Big shows have graced our stage in the past and we have many more big events planned for this season and beyond. But even with the biggest show on our stage, DPAC would seem empty to us without having you in the audience, in the moment with family and friends, experiencing the magic and power of live entertainment.

As I write this welcome note, DPAC is ranked among the best theaters in America by three national publications (Venues Now - #1, Pollstar - #2, Billboard - #5). Back in the summer of 2021 as we worked toward reopening there were many unknowns, but each day we kept moving forward with the understanding that it was important that we come together again to share the performances, the songs, the stories, the smiles and laughs, and even sometimes the tears, that live events bring to us in a way that no other entertainment form can.

On behalf of my team at DPAC and our parent companies, Nederlander and Professional Facilities Management (PFM), we invite you to celebrate live with our 14th season and the incredible diversity and variety of the over 250 performances that will grace our stage.

“Welcome to DPAC, we’re glad you are here.”

Sincerely,

Mobile entry is a safe, easy, convenient, and contactless way to access and manage your tickets all in one place.

Safety is every venue’s #1 priority and mobile entry gives DPAC a better understanding of who guests are prior to every performance through this new adaptation. Now, more than ever; it is critical for venues to know who is in possession of each ticket in order to be able to share important information with them before the doors open and the show begins.

With mobile entry, which is powered by DPAC’s official ticketing partner Ticketmaster; there’s no need for direct contact or physical exchange of your ticket. Mobile entry guarantees a quick and safe ticket scan straight from your phone. Our secure ticket technology reduces the risk of ticket fraud, eliminated the possibilities of theft or counterfeiting. Once you’ve purchased your mobile tickets on Ticketmaster; you can always rest assured you’re getting the seats you paid for.

Always be aware, though. Do not purchase tickets from unauthorized online ticket brokers. Don’t be fooled by online websites who mimic DPAC’s name or website or offer tickets they might not even have. Go directly to DPACnc.com or to ticketmaster.com

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

In creating this revival production of the Tony Award-winning musical 1776, we have embraced our American history through multiple lenses.

story re-enacts our Founding Fathers’ drafting of the Declaration of Independence, now brought to life in this twenty-first century production by a company of artists who reflect multiple representations of race, ethnicity, and gender, and who identify as female, trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming. The words and symbols of our cultural memory take on very different meanings through the act of reframing this musical in the context of America today. By intentionally shifting our gaze, we simultaneously see not only what was, but also what can be.

We invite you, the audience, to hold multiple realities at once: both this historical narrative and the identities of this company of artists alive in 2023. In this production, we find other faces, other voices, other perspectives on our American history. In “Molasses to Rum,” we are inspired by the Haitian Revolution, Nat Turner’s Rebellion, and present day protests. In the musical arrangement and staging of “Momma Look Sharp,” we acknowledge the ongoing impact and suffering of cyclical violence in the United States. Abigail Adams’ most famous historical words, “remember the ladies…all men would be tyrants if they could,” have been added to the musical for the first time ever with the blessing of the estates of Stone and Edwards. Robert Hemings, the enslaved person who waited upon Thomas Jefferson in his quarters in Philadelphia as he wrote the words “all men are created equal,” is given a presence on stage.

At its core, our production asks questions. How can we hold history as a predicament versus an affirming myth? How does an honest reckoning with our past help us move forward together? How is my story a part of American history?

We understand that ‘1776’ means very different things to people. Those differences, we think, feel central to the task of telling this story at this moment. Bryan Stevenson, who led the creation of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, said “People do not want to admit wrongdoing in America, because they expect only punishment. I’m not interested in talking about American history because I want to punish America. I want to liberate America.” By gathering together to watch this performance, it is our invitation for you to wrestle, collectively, with the complicated multiplicity of truths from our past, while acknowledging how far we have come, and how far we still can go together. “Don’t turn away,” as the poet Rumi said. “Keep your gaze on the bandaged place. That is where the light enters you.”

As Roundabout Theatre Company mourns the April passing of Todd Haimes, our Artistic Director CEO, we are proud to continue our work in theatres in NYC and across the country, in NYC schools, and throughout our community, driven by the love of theatre Todd instilled in us all.

A NOTE ABOUT PRONOUNS AND GENDER AT 1776

Our amazing company is made up of female, trans, and non-binary individuals. As you read the program, you may notice that the cast, crew, and creative teams list their pronouns next to their names. We recognize that this might be new to some of our audiences and want to take the opportunity to highlight some concepts around pronouns and gender expansiveness.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “GENDER EXPANSIVENESS”?

There are an infinite amount of ways that people experience gender. Here is a glossary of some terms that you may hear when discussing gender:

• Gender Identity. A person’s internal sense of their self and their gender.

• Non-Binary. An umbrella gender identity that does not conform to the false idea that there are only two genders, male and female. Some other terms that fall under the non-binary umbrella are agender, genderqueer, gender-fluid, pangender, or gender non-conforming.

• Trans or Transgender. A person whose gender identity differs with their gender assigned at birth. Some people who identify as non-binary may also identify as trans.

• Cis or Cisgender. A person whose gender identity aligns with their gender assigned at birth.

• Pronouns. Pronouns are the words we use to talk about people aside from using their names (ex: she/her, he/him, they/them, and many more.) Sometimes pronouns correlate with someone’s gender identity, and sometimes they don’t.

Help Local Students Experience Their First Ever Broadway Show

Discover Broadway offers Truist Broadway members a way to donate tickets so their valuable seats do not go unused.

Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s Truist Broadway members, hundreds of tickets have been donated to deserving students from high schools and universities located throughout Durham. For many, these seats provided opportunities for students to experience their first ever Broadway show.

For those that we serve through this program, these opportunities are more than just a ticket, they are a chance to experience something that could inspire goals and dreams for the future.

Here is how you can donate:

• If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.

• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student.

• DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets.

Please note: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts.

Guest Etiquette

At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.

After The Performance

Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the houselights come up.

As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.

Entering and Exiting the seating area

Please time your exits and re-entry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.

Kids at DPAC

Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows.

For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase.

Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance.

It Can Wait

Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.

It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest

Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you finish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.

Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones

At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones.

Please note that GoPro’s, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events.

All Broadway shows prohibit photography and video recording.

Quiet Please

Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn off all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative.

When you start with care, you get a different kind of bank.

Care isn’t just what we do at Truist—it’s who we are. We make sure people around us feel supported and more in control. We find out what’s important to our clients, and make it important to us. We get involved in meaningful ways with our communities. Why? Because real connections and real care create better outcomes. Now that’s powerful.
