You don’t have to travel to distant destinations in order to uncover mountain-like vistas, epic waterways, riveting road trips, or natural wonders! Located just a road trip away, the La Crosse Region bursts with wander-ful treasures suitable for every type of explorer. Get lost in the wonder where charming attractions and rare topography collide!
If You Like Mountains, then You’ll Love the Driftless Region’s Bluffs.
If You Like Natural Wonders, then You’ll Love these Rare Attractions.
The La Crosse area is proudly nestled between the bluffs of the Driftless Region. With ancient topography, this unique part of the world claims fame for stunning views, vibrant seasons and legendary recreation. “Drift” refers to glacial drift: the rock and sediment deposited by a glacier as it moves over an area of land. A small piece of the Upper Mississippi Region was left untouched during the last Ice Age, leaving no glacial erosion or deposits. While surrounding landscapes were flattened by glaciers, the Upper Midwest’s original, rugged bluffs and coulees remain. You don’t have to travel out west to hike, bike and explore towering Mountain terrains. The Driftless Region’s natural topography reaches into parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois however the La Crosse area is special; located where the Mississippi River and Driftless Region unite.
Seeking rare attractions and unique wonders? The La Crosse Region is central to a variety of exceptional attractions that inspire the mind and connect visitors with nature. From ancient caves to wildlife sanctuaries, exploration abounds!
If You Like the Great Lakes, then You’ll Love the Mississippi River.
Niagara Cave is located just a short drive from central La Crosse in Harmony, Minnesota. The cave offers tours that hike one mile underground into some of the Nation’s most unique caves! At Niagara Cave you can discover 450-millionyear-old fossils, soak in the sites of an underground waterfall and see cave formations, both delicate and large! For more family fun, you can mine for fossils and real “hidden gems” as well as enjoy a round of mini-golf. Open seasonally, the Niagara Cave is truly a unique hidden gem. The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is another special attraction of the La Crosse Region. Tucked into the outskirts of Onalaska, with plenty of lush views and the Refuge’s Visitor Center offers a plethora of activities. With an overlook of Lake Onalaska and interactive exhibits of wildlife and habitats, you’re sure to learn a thing or two! Most memorable? The “Walk on Water” exhibit, to see what lies below the surface of the river!
@kalebwschuster
Nothing brings people together quite like diving into nature and soaking up time on the water. The La Crosse Region sits on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River and is host to its confluence of other waterways. These meandering lakes and rivers are paradise for paddlers of every stripe. Hit the water on a variety of trail types offering both relaxing floats or exciting excursions. Bring your kayak or rent paddling vessels of all kinds, including HydroBikes, at various outfitters throughout the region!
@newleveldrones
From rivers and trout streams to lakes, the La Crosse Region also has excellent fishing opportunities. Near La Crosse, the upper Mississippi sprawls well beyond its main channel creating hundreds of tiny islands, backwaters and deep pools that harbor more species of fish than any other temperate-climate river in the world. The La Crosse and Black Rivers, which merge with the Mississippi, are home to many species including walleye, northern pike, sturgeon, large and smallmouth bass, panfish, catfish, and more! Lake Onalaska or Lake Neshonoc are the perfect setting for a leisurely boat cruise and overflow with panfish. Whether paddling and boating in the summer or getting hooked on winter ice fishing, a sea of memories await on Wisconsin’s West Coast.

If You Like Botanical Gardens, then You’ll Love these Vibrant Grounds. Every season in the La Crosse Region offers something special with snow-dusted bluffs, spring apple blossoms, sensational vistas, and vibrant fall foliage. However, natural beauty truly thrives in the warmer months with bountiful gardens across the region. Most famous in La Crosse are the International Friendship Gardens that sprouts to life each year with a vast assortment of living things. Each section of the gardens features plants, sculptures and messaging from sister cities across the globe. VISITORS GUIDE 2023
1 Lytle’s Landing - HISTORIC Lytle’s Landing is a hidden gem in Onalaska! There’s a good chance your GPS won’t find it, but you won’t want to miss it. To get there, turn on Lytle Road off County Road Z and follow it to the end. Don’t give up when the road narrows, you’re almost there. Although it looks like a bike path, it leads to the parking lot for Lytle’s Landing. At the trailhead, you’ll find an old railroad bridge spanning the Black River. The trail follows the original rail line built in the late 1800s. It’s a fantastic spot for photos, and you’ll find additional bridges as you continue. While it’s a popular biking area, being part of the much longer Great River State Trail, it also offers a peaceful hike. The trail spans 24 miles total, crossing Onalaska, Midway and Trempealeau, and can be just as long or as short as you prefer!

While you’re in the area, the La Crosse District of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge is just 3 miles from the Lytle’s Landing parking lot. With some short paved and gravel trails, plus a great visitor center, be sure to drop in. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching, especially in the fall. After all that hiking, Red Pines Bar & Grill is an iconic spot to grab a lakeside drink or meal. Not far past the wildlife refuge, the restaurant sits on Lake Onalaska and is famous for its fish fry.

4 Apple Blossom Overlook RELAXING
Apple Blossom Overlook Trail begins in Apple Blossom Overlook Park in La Crescent, Minnesota, just across the river from La Crosse. The 1.3 mile loop trail passes through prairie and forest, but don’t miss the short divergent trail that leads to a cliff ledge nearly 600 feet above the Mississippi. It offers beautiful views and, typically, fewer crowds! In summertime, continue past the park to the seasonal River View Winery & Vineyard, or any time of year, head back into La Crescent and enjoy small town charm at Kaddy’s Kafe. This quaint main street café serves breakfast and lunch, plus dinner on Fridays.
FUN & EDUCATIONAL
Looking for a bike rental to explore the full length of the Great River State Trail or one of the many other bike trails in the area? Check out Wrench & Roll or Drift Cycle in La Crosse!
Open year-round, this unique center has a small entry fee. The grounds are beautifully maintained and offer a variety of trails, ranging from the easy ½ mile Troll Trail to several longer ones totaling over 6 miles. The center’s mission is to preserve and protect the environment and cultural heritage of the region, and they offer related programs throughout the year. Be sure to check out their Norwegian themed gift shop too!
3 Grandad Bluff via Hixon Forest - BUCKET LIST!
4
Grandad Bluff is perhaps the most iconic spot in the La Crosse Region, but most people opt to drive up it. Did you know there are multiple hiking routes to reach the summit? For the lesser traveled route, try starting in the Lower Hixon Forest. There are a couple options to reach the top of Grandad Bluff. For a slightly shorter option, begin from Bliss Road on the Oak Trail. You’ll then connect with a short portion of the Log Loop to Aspen Trail for just under 2 miles. Alternatively, park at the Hixon Forest Parking Lot and follow the 1 mile Hickory Trail to the Bicentennial Trail, which is primarily a mountain bike route. Then, pick up the Log Loop to Aspen Trail for a bit over a total of 2 miles. Here, cross Bliss Road and access the Compass Connection Trail, part of the Gateway Trail System. You can easily expect another 1.5 miles or more to reach the top of the bluff, depending on which final ascent you choose. Looking for a break? Before starting up the Compass Connection Trail, you’ll pass right by the historic Alpine Inn, famous for its Bloody Marys and cheese curds! For shorter trail options, you can park at one of several pull-offs on Grandad Bluff Road and hike the Gateway Trails to the top.

ater has a magical way of captivating the human spirit. For time immemorial it has drawn explorers, mystics, and weekend warriors to its shores in search of adventure, reflection, or some good ol’ fashioned fun.
Then you can grab your canoe or kayak, or rent one locally, and follow one of the many paddling trails that crisscross the greater La Crosse area. Looking for even more action? Then it's time to grab your rod and reel and head out for some world-class bass and panfish fishing. There is a reason the region is home to the giant Sunny the Sunfish statue. Finally, if you love the idea of a day on the water but do not yet have your own gear, then La Crosse has plenty of options to rent it all. (continue on next page)

DINING
Looking for a bite to eat with a view? Then you've come to the right place! La Crosse offers everything from fine dining to the traditional Wisconsin supper club experience, all with beautiful views of the water.
Huck Finn’s On The Water Voted “La Crosse’s Best Outdoor Dining”, Huck Finn’s is a local institution. Relax on the river overlooking North Bay Marina and enjoy their famous Herb Lemonade or Bloody Marys. Then get ready for mouthwatering burgers, juicy steaks, and fresh walleye.
The Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern Waterfront Restaurant and Tavern offers fine dining with arguably downtown La Crosse’s best riverfront patio. Get ready for an unforgettable meal, superb service, excellent wine, and hopefully a stunning sunset to top it all off!
Sullivan’s Supper Club Enjoy classic dining along the Mississippi River and immerse yourself in Wisconsin’s Supper Club tradition at Sullivan’s Supper Club. If you’re lucky, you can enjoy some classics like their shrimp dinner or a savory Filet Mignon on their coveted patio.
Pettibone Boat Club Did somebody say Tiki Bar? Pettibone Boat Club, with their expansive patio and one-of-a-kind tiki bar, is definitely worth a stop. The patio offers 270 degree views of the Mississippi River and great burgers, wraps, and sandwiches.

PADDLING BOAT TRAILS RENTALS There is no better way to explore a river town than by paddling its water trails. The La Crosse Region is home to numerous options including the Black River Trail, Goose Island Paddling Trail, La Crosse River Paddling Trail, and the Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail.
Black River Trail A great way to spend the day is on the Black River around French Island. You can grab a bite to eat at Huck Finn’s, rent your preferred water craft from Island Outdoors, and then enjoy a leisurely paddle up and down the Black River. If you really want to go all out, paddle across the river to Moxie’s Tiki Bar for a Rum Runner or Mojito!
Goose Island Canoe Trail Goose Island County Park serves as the trailhead for the seven-mile Goose Island Canoe Trail. The full trail takes about 4–5 hours to complete and winds through the scenic Mississippi River backwaters. The fishing is amazing, and the views are breathtaking. Goose Island County Park also hosts the county’s largest campground, a general store, and canoe rentals. Unlike the Black River Trail, this is a B.Y.O.B. destination.
Don’t worry. You don’t have to have your own boat to enjoy all that La Crosse has to offer. There are a number of rental options in the La Crosse area that can outfit you with either a powerboat or humanpowered vessel.
Pontoons and Fishing Boats Does your idea of a great day on the water involve cruising around in a pontoon or fishing the backwaters with the speed and comfort of a fishing boat? Then check out one of the La Crosse area’s premier boat rental companies.
Schafer’s River Rentals Schafer’s rents everything. From pontoons and fishing boats to canoes and kayaks, they have it all. If fishing, be sure to stop in their bait shop for up-to-date fishing reports and a great selection of lures and bait.
American Marine American Marine isn’t just a watercraft showroom. They also rent a wide variety of pontoon boats with tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, and wakeskating packages. Best part? They are located right at Huck Finn’s, so you can grab a bite to eat and a cool drink once your water-based adventure is complete!
Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail Another great option is the relatively new Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail. It takes you through the Mississippi backwaters into Lake Onalaska. The trip from Lytle’s Landing to Fred Funk Landing takes about four miles, and it is another three miles to Mosey’s Landing, home to the local legend, Red Pines Bar and Grill. @ChristineLozada
Design A Cruise Not sure if you are ready to captain your own vessel? Then head over to Design a Cruise and let Captain Bob do it for you. He’ll plan everything, from fishing trips to sightseeing tours, all aboard his double-deck twin-engine pontoon. Bob also serves as a parttime captain on the La Crosse Queen, so he knows his way around a ship!
Canoes, Kayaks, and SUPs Would you rather enjoy the serenity of the river without the hum of an outboard engine? Then a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard is your best bet.
FISHING
There is no better feeling than casting a line across the water, apart from casting said line and feeling a bite! La Crosse’s unique location in Wisconsin's Driftless Area results in quality fishing to excite almost any angler. Whether you are after bass, sunfish, walleye, or even trout, the area boasts plentiful populations.
Any parent with young kids knows that all it takes is some wax worms, a bobber, and some hungry sunnies to keep kids interested. Just make sure you’re paying attention, as the local panfish grow to healthy sizes and you won’t want to let them get away!
Fly Fishing in Root River While not as well-known as the area’s bass and panfish angling, the Driftless Area hosts some of the best fly-fishing in southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. If you are looking for a unique fishing
Island Outdoors Island Outdoors is a proper outfitter. They rent everything from canoes and kayaks to stand up paddleboards and HydroBikes. They also sell all the gear you could even need for a successful day on the water.
Neshonoc Lakeside Campground Neshonoc Lakeside Campground is an excellent home-base for exploring Lake Neshonoc. In addition to traditional camping amenities, they also rent kayaks, canoes, and motorboats. The campground also has a heated pool and hot tub.
Bass Fishing on the Mississippi River There is a reason the area hosts countless bass fishing tournaments each year, and it’s not because of the beautiful views and great restaurants. It is the high-quality largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing that draws in the crowds. But you don’t have to be a competitive angler to land a lunker. Given the productivity of the river and its backwaters, beautiful fish can be found by even the most novice angler.
KayoeSUP If you are looking to try stand-up paddleboarding, then check out KayoeSUP. They rent a variety of different SUP models and offer highly-rated classes for all ability levels. SUPing is the fastest growing watersport in the world, and for good reason.
Pan Fishing on Lake Onalaska and Lake Neshonoc If you’ve ever stopped at the Lake Onalaska Overlook, then you’ve come across Sunny the “Giant” Sunfish. The reason the city hosts a 15-foot tall giant sunfish statue is because it has been named the “Sunfish Capital of the World.”
experience, then grab your fly rod and head out onto one of the area’s many trout streams, including the famous Root River.
So there you have it. A trip to the La Crosse area isn’t complete without some time on, or at least near, the water. Whether you are an avid angler, outdoor watersports enthusiast, or just looking for a drink with a view, you’re bound to find something!

VISITORS GUIDE 2024
Coon-Valley - Hillsboro
La Crosse - Reedsburg
Experience the unexpected when you embark on a journey along the country roads of Wisconsin, where each turn could lead to a path straight as an arrow through corn and soybean fields for dozens of miles, or a twisting, turning, sightseer’s adventure. County Road P, a captivating 40-mile stretch from Coon Valley to Hillsboro, is undoubtedly the latter. This road winds its way through ever changing landscaping, taking you on a riveting ride that ascends to high ridges and descends through picturesque valleys. As you travel you will pass through Norskedalen just outside Coon Valley, through Westby and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, finally ending on WI-82, just a few miles west of Hillsboro. Prepare to be captivated by this must-see route for any biker seeking an extraordinary ride in the La Crosse Region.
Set off on a scenic journey on this 72-mile stretch along WI-33 from La Crosse to Reedsburg. This unforgettable route takes you through pristine farmland, over beautiful bluff lands, across idyllic Amish country, and along winding rivers and streams. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Wildcat Mountain State Park where you can enjoy the technical challenge of the steep, winding road up and down Wildcat Mountain! From start to finish, there’s a little of everything Wisconsin has to offer on this route.
Independence Loop Embark on an exhilarating adventure along the Independence Loop, an endlessly twisty, technical ride that spans County Road Q from Independence to WI-121. Despite its relatively short distance, just nine miles, this route surprisingly feels much longer (in the best way possible). You’ll be treated to beautiful views of this seemingly timeless farm country. Once you reach 121, enjoy a thrilling zip back to Independence. Along the way, stop for a delightful break or relaxing picnic at Island Park on Bugle Lake. Alternatively- treat yourself and head back to town for a bite at a local eatery. The Independence Loop blends exciting twists and turns with gorgeous scenery to create a one-ofa-kind biking experience.
