On March 13, 2023 Rick Rodriguez and three friends were 13 days into what was expected to be a three-week crossing from the Galápagos to French Polynesia aboard Raindancer a Kelly Petersen 44 when his vessel Raindancer collided with a whale and began to take on water. 15 minutes later, Rick and his crew were in their liferaft watching the last 10 meters of Raindancers mast slip below the surface.

In this article, Rick shares, in his own words, his account of what happened, which he shares in the hope that all those who venture beyond the horizon are well prepared for any eventuality.
