ROM the 1st – 12th November 2021, Glasgow will host the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference. It’s officially known as the 26th Conference of Parties, or COP26.

The climate talks will be the biggest international summit the UK has ever hosted; bringing together over 30,000 delegates including heads of state, climate experts and campaigners to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change.

This COP in particular is an extraordinary opportunity to set a path towards a future that is sustainable for us and our planet in the wake of a global pandemic. Glasgow Science Centre will put you at the epicentre of this event, as it unfolds on a global stage. Make sure you get involved in the conversation on social media using #OurWorldOurImpact.

Glasgow has a global reputation and proven track record of successfully delivering large international events, such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships making it the perfect location for the summit.

Getting in the Zone ...

osted in Glasgow, COP26 will be delivered across two sites - the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) (referred to as the Blue Zone) and the Glasgow Science Centre (known as the Green Zone).

The Blue Zone is a UN-managed space which hosts the negotiations.

The space brings together delegations from 197 Parties, alongside observer organisations to share their stories at panel discussions, side events, exhibits, and cultural events. All attendees within the Blue Throughout the duration of the Green Zone, there will be a range of organisations featured representing voices across the UK and world. Zone must be accredited by the UNFCCC. The Green Zone is managed by the UK Government, and is a platform for the general public, youth groups, civil society, academia, artists, business and others to have their voices heard through events, exhibitions, workshops and talks that promote dialogue, awareness, education and commitments.

From 1-12 November 2021, the COP26 Green Zone will be open to the public at the Glasgow Science Centre.

Growing a green small business ...

COP26 for Small Business brought to Glasgow by

mall99 have a mission to guide 1 Million Micro Businesses to Net Zero by 2025 and believe that while 96% of businesses in the UK are small businesses they are being overlooked in favour of the easier task of encouraging big business to net zero.

A spokesman for Small99 said: "COP26 is rapidly approaching, and there is one voice

missing from the table: Small Businesses.

"Large corporations are starting to throw their weight behind the event which is welcomed, but if we are to see real change instilled in the Climate Movement, everyone needs to be involved.

"This includes the 96% of UK businesses that have less than nine employees. In the US, this

figure is 92%. These are huge chunks of the global economy that currently lack any voice or representation at COP26."

To better enable small businesses to play their vital role in the battle for the environment Small99 are highlighting a number of special events to mark Cop26 and to allow small business owners to take part, take heart and learn how they can play their role.

November 3-11: The New York Times Climate Hub Created to coincide with the COP26 summit, The New York Times Climate Hub is a physical and virtual space where influential leaders and thinkers join forces with the wider community to debate, discuss and discover actionable climate strategies.

November 5: The Net Zero Roadshow Hosted by Glasgow City Council & GreenFleetHear from experts from Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, Glasgow City Council, Crown Commercial Service, SMMT and Association of Fleet Professionals, plus case studies and

presentations. Take advantage of the 30 minute test drives in both cars and vans.

November 8-10 Sustainable Innovation Forum Our platform offers all stakeholders the opportunity to have a tangible impact at COP, helping forge the cross sector, public-private partnerships essential for transformational change.

November 8-11: Climate Action Innovation Zone The Innovation Zone organised by Climate Action in partnership with Scottish Enterprise is an example of the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing climate change.

November 11: Hydrogen Transition Summit We hear from influential international speakers working on hydrogen projects and programmes as well as those developing energy and financial policies. Sessions will share innovations, ideas and case studies.

Agri Food Transition Summit With the technical collaboration of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Climate Action presents the Agri – Food Transition Summit during COP26.

Holyrood Fringe Festival

olyrood’s COP26 Fringe events will take place over four days (Wed 3rd – Sat 6th November) in the centre of Glasgow, with each day exploring a different theme.

This will be a family friendly Eco-Fair with useful information and activities to help us reduce our carbon footprint and improve the environment.

The Festival will end on Saturday evening with the Green Giant Awards Dinner, that recognises and celebrates champions in Scotland who have made significant contributions in areas discussed over the four days, and a ceilidh.

First Bus Glasgow Depot leads the way on green transport for COP26 F

irst Bus have teamed up with Octopus Energy & Hitachi Europe - Principal partner of COP26, to deliver a showcase ‘Together for our Planet’ event.

First Glasgow Caledonia Depot is now a rapid EV charging hub offering delegates & guests free rapid state-of-the-art charges for their electric vehicles (EVs) The event will show how bus depots can be transformed into fleet charging hubs, accelerating the transition to zero emission

Getting there ... the green way The Caledonia Depot is at 100 Cathcart Rd, Glasgow G42 7BH. You can get to the First Electric Juice Depot by electric car if you would like to come and park in one of the 22 charging spots. You can, alternatively, use the First electric shuttle bus, which will be running between the COP26 Green Zone, city centre and the site every half an hour.

Seats are filling up on board the COP26 ‘Together for Our Planet’ showcase hosted by First Bus, Octopus Energy and Hitachi Europe – principal partner of COP26.

Go one step greener at the immersive event held from 1st to 11th November in the southside of Glasgow as the First Bus Caledonia Depot is transformed into a futuristic hub, set in 2035.

The event is also home to an EV rapid charging facility, free to all attending delegates. The chargers, which can replenish an average family EV in around 30 minutes, are available to all on a firstcome-first-serve basis, with bookable charging slots for VIPs.

he focus for 2021 is creating three Climate Action Blueprints - for Tour Operators, Accommodation Providers and Destinations.

They will enable anyone in these sectors to deliver their Climate Action Plans.

The blueprints will combine the frameworks, tools, best practice and resources required for delivering Climate Action Plans that align tourism with the need to reduce global emissions by at least half by 2030 and keep global warming within 1.5 degrees C. Tourism Declares will work with our members inside the Tourism Declares community to co-create the Blueprints transparently and collaboratively, and according to our climate equity and justice commitments.

We’ll post updates in our newsletters, and will regularly share content on the main website to encourage wider consultation and contributions. Even if you haven’t declared, we want to hear from you.

We’ll publish the three Blueprints by COP26 in November as free resources for anyone to use. We hope they will be adopted as the standard approach to transforming our industry.

Plate up for Glasgow Make a difference one dish at a time

LATE up for Glasgow is a hospitality industry led campaign scheduled to coincide with COP26, in November 2021.

Piloted by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce through its Circular Glasgow initiative and funded by Experience Glasgow Food and Drink Regional Group, the campaign aims to highlight and encourage hospitality businesses to act upon the global issue of food waste and its impact on climate change.

The campaign’s ambition is to challenge traditional and wasteful dining and takeaway business models with the goal of sending as little organic waste as possible to landfill.

It is hoped that businesses can rebuild the local economy, while collaborating on how to become more sustainable and profitable. Some of the city's best chefs will also share tips and offer advice on how to reduce food waste and

Visit locations where you can see spectacular views of the city, not possible by bus or car. The whole tour is outside and the route is generally flat and has been designed using cycle paths, river and canal pathways and minor roads with very little traffic. Appropriate safety measures have been put in place with guides wearing face coverings where distancing can’t be maintained and bikes and helmets are sanitised between every ride. Making space for cyclists

Glasgow City Council’s Spaces for People programme has been developed to give cyclists and pedestrians more space to roam in the city centre and encourage more active travel. It aims to deliver 36km of new cycle lanes across the city and cycle parking at 50 new locations.

There is already a new Clydeside pop-up cycle lane which provides dedicated space for cyclists travelling west and runs for 1.5 miles between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and more cycle parking has been installed in George Square. Get your payment method ready – mTicket on the First Bus App, contactless card, concessionary pass or the exact fare. As the bus approaches put out your hand to signal that you’d like to board. When your bus arrives, please allow space for passengers to leave the bus before you step on board.

3. On board We encourage customers to make cashless payments to avoid cash handling.

Follow any social distancing guidelines.

We have increased our cleaning regime, customers can assist by not eating or drinking on board and removing any rubbish when they leave. When you’d like to disembark, just ring the bell and remain seated until the bus stops.

HUNTERIAN MUSEUM – THE MACKINTOSH HOUSE

82 Hillhead Street. G12 8QQ The Mackintosh House is a meticulous reassemblage of the principal interiors from the Mackintoshes’ Glasgow home. The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodelled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The principal interiors were decorated in his distinctive style, remarkable then, and now, for the disciplined austerity of the furnishings and decoration.

he Gallowgate, that stretch of Glasgow's east end that begins just a few minutes' walk away from Buchanan Street has a couthy charm mixed with a growing modern vibe that makes it unique in the city.

It has been said that Gallowgate retains "much of its distinctive earthy charm" despite wholesale demolition and regeneration and provides a taste of the city's authentic character.

But things are changing. The area is increasingly home to creative businesses and a new generation of pubs and restaurants.

The Creative East End organisation, based at 200 Gallowgate, and led by Lauren Stewart and Jen McGlone, provides space for initiatives and ideas to flourish in the interests of economic growth and regeneration.

Over at Calton Entry, the thriving BAaD - Barras Art and Design - includes a fish restaurant, A'Challtainn, as well as concerts and a Sunday indoor market.

The once famous Baird's Bar has reopened as a restaurant, 226 Gallowgate, and in Bain Street, close by the Barrowland, there is Saint Luke's, a noted livemusic venue, and the award-winning Winged Ox Bar & Kitchen.

Other key local venues are the Van Winkle Bourbon BBQ Grill, at 267 and the award-winning pub. Hielan' Jessie, at 374 and ,of course, WEST Brewery, at the Templeton Building on Glasgow Green.

he original Barrowland Ballroom opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow’s city centre and was built by “Barras Queen” Maggie McIver and her husband James.

The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above.

The front of the building boasts a distinctive neon sign which is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Bowie, Biffy Clyro, Oasis, U2, The Stranglers, The Clash, The Smiths, Big Country, Muse, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Texas, Simple Minds, Snow Patrol, SLF, The Vatersay Boys and many others have played the Ballroom.

Adjacent to the Ballroom is the Barrowland Park where there is a pathway which features the names of many artists ,who have played at the Ballroom over the decades.

G

lasgow Merchant City is a neighbourhood with its own identity located within the city centre area. Like many inner city areas throughout the world, the Merchant City has transformed itself from a former commercial trading area into the cool, chic haven of style that exists today. But it wasn’t always that way.

The Merchant City is one of the oldest quarters of Glasgow and has been the home to monks, merchants and merry makers for centuries. In medieval times orangeries and rose gardens once scented the air, but as the city developed this pretty little area is where the dog and bird markets, bowling greens and places of entertainment could be found.

Throughout the eighties and nineties the Merchant City has been revitalised. Old warehouses became modern fashion houses; empty market buildings have been given new

life as restaurants or bars and loft living and the birth of a strong and vibrant community arrived in style.

Artists colonised run-downworkshops and empty shop units; vacated merchants houses became hotels and restaurants while redundant churches have found new congregations in the theatre-going and music-loving audiences of the city; namely the Tron Theatre and St. Andrew’s in the Square.

Today the Merchant City is a remarkable mix of

stylish bars, boutique hotels, luxury apartments, restaurants, shops and artists galleries. And amongst it all there still survive a few hidden gems, such as the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall where Stan Laurel made his debut or the architectural splendour of the magnificent 18th century St. Andrew’s in the Square or the sublime City Halls and Old Fruitmarket.

Whatever the content of these buildings the style and elegance of the architecture remains to be enjoyed by all.

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. The Claypits are now open providing access to new pathways, boardwalks and a pedestrian bridge which connects the west and east sides of the canal north of Applecross Basin. As well as wildlife, the Claypits also offer spectacular views over the city.

Glasgow to Crianlarich

rom Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde.

Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’.

At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World

War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.

& Tarbet station, the world-renowned bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond appear on the right.

Approaching Arrochar, look left for great views of the celebrated ‘Arrochar Alps’, including such craggy peaks as the Beinn Narnain, Beinn Ime and the well-loved Cobbler. Shortly after departing Arrochar

Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information!

Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

Crianlarich to Fort William/ Mallaig

ust beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve.

Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle.

Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor.

After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left.

Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only

Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land later you’ll see the spectacular silver sands of Morar, made famous in the 1983 film ‘Local Hero’ area with a base circumference of 24 miles.

cotRail is opening up some of Scotland’s most beautiful areas to tourists, cycling fans, outdoor pursuits enthusiasts and local commuters with its new ScotRail Highland Explorer service.

But, working with Transport Scotland, cycling groups and outdoor specialists, the design team at ScotRail came up with an innovative solution to accommodate up to 20 cycles and bulky sports gear.

Three carriages, which are a first of their kind for the UK rail network, will operate along the world famous and iconic West Highland Line from Glasgow to Oban, from Monday, 19 July, allowing customers to escape to the country.

The redesigned carriage boasts space for ordinary bikes, a limited number of tandem cycles and an e-bike charging socket – unique on a train in the UK.

There were complex challenges to overcome, such as the lack of space on public transport for carrying large sporting equipment.
