Merchant City Festival 2021

his well-loved event delivered by Glasgow Life, the charity that inspires people to lead richer and more active lives through culture and sport, will showcase outdoor arts, circus, dance and more – with events happening in and around the streets and venues of the Merchant City area of Glasgow.

applied for the festival’s Get Involved Fund – securing visual enhancements such as new festive coloured lighting, special Merchant City Festival menus and outdoor street barriers with the £500 grant. Kadampa Meditation Centre is also offering a selection of free short meditation classes with the fund.

The Carnival Party will start the festival on Thursday 8 July with stilt walkers and dancers celebrating Baroque Venetian traditions.

Walkabout in Merchant City will have amazing acts around Merchant Square and the surrounding streets with performers dressed as limestone creatures, turtles and aliens. Surge’s In the City Still - Feathers Ensemble will use music, movement and projections to take the audience on a thought-provoking journey on Saturday and Sunday.

The 2021 festival will be slightly different to previous years due to COVID restrictions, which means it will not feature markets, food trucks or live music stages.

All events will be free to attend, with the exception of the Walking Tour which has a small charge, but tickets to outdoor performances at George Square and Barrowland Park will need to be pre-booked at merchantcityfestival.com to ensure numbers are managed in the safest way.

The festival will take over the iconic centre of the city, lighting up George Square with dynamic dance and circus performances like Swings (All or Nothing Aerial), an MCF commission, where aerialists will take to giant swings with an interactive soundscape. World class company Motionhouse bring their breathtaking show Wild .

Meanwhile, Surge Festival at Barrowland Park will showcase bonkers cabaret performances with weird and wonderful interactive activities for the whole family, including nest building, marble filling and digital sculpting.

Getting around Glasgow G

lasgow has an excellent transport system that makes exploring the city easy and affordable. If you arrive by air into Glasgow International the best tip is to use the Glasgow Shuttle airport to city bus link which operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day.

Once in the city there are lots of ways to get about but if you are in town for more than one day then one of the best ways to see more of the city for less and sample the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the red, open top City Sightseeing bus tour.

Your ticket is valid for two days and you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Or jump onto The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground rail network.

These fast little trains will carry you around under the city and makes exploring the West End, South Side and other neighbourhoods really easy. Enquire at SPT Travel centres, they will direct you to the best value deals available.

If you plan a day trip out of the city it’s likely that there is a direct fast train or bus service to your destination. Edinburgh, Stirling and the Loch Lomond area are no more than 50 minutes away and easily visited in one day.

For trips further out you can get great car rental rates from Arnold Clark, a local and reliable rental company.

Glasgow fleet expands as city celebrates 1.25 million rentals

O

ne-hundred-and-sixty extra bikes and 16 additional stations are being added to Glasgow’s popular fleet of nextbikes this year as the city celebrates a milestone of 1.25 million rentals.

One hundred of the new bikes will hit the streets over the next few weeks, along with 10 new stations, as the scheme expands its network across the city.

The remaining 60 bikes and six stations will be added to the expanding fleet by the autumn.

They will join the city’s existing 770 standard bikes, 126 e-bikes, and 90 stations. The new bikes are nextbike’s

latest model - the Smartbike 2.0. They have the benefits of improved security, locking mechanisms, and enhanced GPS tracking, with a slightly different rental procedure to the existing bikes.

Krysia Solheim, nextbike UK MD, said: “We’re delighted to be introducing these new bikes to the Glasgow fleet, especially in the year that COP26 take place in the city and the focus turns to halting climate change.

“We’re also excited to be expanding our network of stations into areas that previously haven’t had direct access to a station. We’re keen to ensure that as the fleet grows, it is as inclusive as possible

and doesn’t just service the city centre."

The new bikes have been funded by Glasgow City Council and Andy Waddell, Director of Operations for Glasgow City Council, said: “Glasgow’s cycle hire scheme is a huge ongoing success and has played a major role in supporting the growing interest in active travel across the city.

“Getting more people on a bike on a more regular basis is essential if we are to achieve Glasgow’s target of carbon neutrality by 2030. The cycle hire scheme therefore has a vital role to play in the city’s effort to tackle the current climate crisis.”

The whole tour is outside and the route is generally flat and has been designed using cycle paths, river and canal pathways and minor roads with very little traffic. Appropriate safety measures have been put in place with guides wearing face coverings where distancing can’t be maintained and bikes and helmets are sanitised between every ride. A 20% discount is currently being offered to locals and groups.

Making space for cyclists

Glasgow City Council’s Spaces for People programme has been developed to give cyclists and pedestrians more space to roam in the city centre and encourage more active travel. It aims to deliver 36km of new cycle lanes across the city and cycle parking at 50 new locations.

There is already a new Clydeside pop-up cycle lane which provides dedicated space for cyclists travelling west and runs for 1.5 miles between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and more cycle parking has been installed in George Square. 2. At the bus stop Use the First Bus App to track where your bus is and the number of free seats available. Get your payment method ready – mTicket on the First Bus App, contactless card, concessionary pass or the exact fare. As the bus approaches put out your hand to signal that you’d like to board. When your bus arrives, please allow space for passengers to leave the bus before you step on board.

3. On board We encourage customers to make cashless payments to avoid cash handling.

Follow any social distancing guidelines.

We have increased our cleaning regime, customers can assist by not eating or drinking on board and removing any rubbish when they leave. When you’d like to disembark, just ring the bell and remain seated until the bus stops.

The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodelled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The principal interiors were decorated in his distinctive style, remarkable then, and now, for the disciplined austerity of the furnishings and decoration.

he original Barrowland Ballroom opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of Glasgow’s city centre and was built by “Barras Queen” Maggie McIver and her husband James.

The Barrowland building includes large street-level halls used for the weekend markets, with a sizeable weatherproof hall above.

The front of the building boasts a distinctive neon sign which is believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK.

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. The Claypits are now open providing access to new pathways, boardwalks and a pedestrian bridge which connects the west and east sides of the canal north of Applecross Basin. As well as wildlife, the Claypits also offer spectacular views over the city.

lasgow Merchant City is a neighbourhood with its own identity located within the city centre area. Like many inner city areas throughout the world, the Merchant City has transformed itself from a former commercial trading area into the cool, chic haven of style that exists today. But it wasn’t always that way.

The Merchant City is one of the oldest quarters of Glasgow and has been the home to monks, merchants and merry makers for centuries. In medieval times orangeries and rose gardens once scented the air, but as the city developed this pretty little area is where the dog and bird markets, bowling greens and places of entertainment could be found.

Throughout the eighties and nineties the Merchant City has been revitalised. Old warehouses became modern fashion houses; empty market buildings have been given new

life as restaurants or bars and loft living and the birth of a strong and vibrant community arrived in style.

Artists colonised run-downworkshops and empty shop units; vacated merchants houses became hotels and restaurants while redundant churches have found new congregations in the theatre-going and music-loving audiences of the city; namely the Tron Theatre and St. Andrew’s in the Square.

Today the Merchant City is a remarkable mix of

stylish bars, boutique hotels, luxury apartments, restaurants, shops and artists galleries. And amongst it all there still survive a few hidden gems, such as the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall where Stan Laurel made his debut or the architectural splendour of the magnificent 18th century St. Andrew’s in the Square or the sublime City Halls and Old Fruitmarket.

Whatever the content of these buildings the style and elegance of the architecture remains to be enjoyed by all.

The blueprints will combine the frameworks, tools, best practice and resources required for delivering Climate Action Plans that align tourism with the need to reduce global emissions by at least half by 2030 and keep global warming within 1.5 degrees C. Tourism Declares will work with our members inside the Tourism Declares community to co-create the Blueprints transparently and collaboratively, and according to our climate equity and justice commitments.

We’ll post updates in our newsletters, and will regularly share content on the main website to encourage wider consultation and contributions. Even if you haven’t declared, we want to hear from you.

We’ll publish the three Blueprints by COP26 in November as free resources for anyone to use. We hope they will be adopted as the standard approach to transforming our industry.

he world famous West Highland Line with its quaint Swiss chalet stations was voted the World’s Best Railway Journey by readers of the Wanderlust travel magazine ... and not without reason.

The route from Glasgow to Mallaig and Fortwilliam snakes its way through stunning countryside and across breathtaking ravines spanned by stunning concrete structures which were record breaking and revolutionary when they were built.

Borrodale Burn bridge became the world’s longest concrete span at 127 feet, and Glenfinnan Viaduct was a huge structure in concrete at 416 yards long with 21 arches.

This historic route combines the romance of the Scottish Highlands with the breathtaking beauty of the rural countryside and adds a little bit of Harry Potter magic along the way.

This is one train journey you will never forget whether you travel on newly-refurbished, regular ScotRail trains or the Jacobite Steam Train

Glasgow to Crianlarich

F

rom Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde.

Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’.

At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World

War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.

& Tarbet station, the world-renowned bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond appear on the right.

Approaching Arrochar, look left for great views of the celebrated ‘Arrochar Alps’, including such craggy peaks as the Beinn Narnain, Beinn Ime and the well-loved Cobbler. Shortly after departing Arrochar

Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information!

Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding Loch Lomond before arriving in Crianlarich.

Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

Crianlarich to Fort William/ Mallaig

J

ust beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve.

Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle.

Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor.

After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left.

Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only

Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land ‘Local Hero’ starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi. You’ll also cross Scotland’s shortest river, area with a base circumference of 24 miles.

From Fort William you’ll soon be heading off on which runs out of our deepest loch - Loch Morar.

As you approach Mallaig take in the breaththe final section of the Line, en route to Mallaig. taking jagged peaks of Skye.

Almost as soon as your journey begins the line crosses part of the Caledonian Canal, Britain’s longest inland waterway, which links Fort William with Inverness. To the right is IN AND AROUND Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight canal locks.

The curve of the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct sweeps you past the head of Loch Shiel and GUIDE the monument to Bonnie Prince January2021 Charlie, marking where he landed and unfurled his standard in 1745 to start the Jacobite Rebellion.

After passing through the beautiful lochs and hills surrounding Lochailort and Beasdale, you arrive in Arisaig – a popular tourist spot with due to its spectacular views over Loch Nan Ceall where you can see the islands of Rum and Eigg. Crianlarich to Oban

T

he Oban line passes through Tyndrum Lower and takes you through beautiful Glen Lochy to Dalmally; and just beyond stands the ruin of Kilchurn Castle, ancient stronghold of Clan Campbell.

Around the head of Loch Awe is the Pass of Brander, which skirts the towering bulk of Ben Cruachan – the Hollow Mountain – which conceals a fascinating secret; the mountain caverns house an innovative hydro power scheme inside. To the left is the River Awe, setting for Sir Walter Scott’s romance ‘The Highland Widow’.

Nearing Oban now and approaching Connel Ferry, you can see the Falls of Lora, a tidal race at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive.

This natural occurrence, caused by a fast-moving tide, produces white rapids that can last for up to five days.

Your final stop on this section of the Line, Oban, is a popular tourist destination, well-known for its many seafood restaurants.

BY BUS CityLink (www.citylink.co.uk) operate fast and frequent (every 15 minutes) coach services throughout the day between Glasgow Buchanan Street Bust Station and Edinburgh Bus Station which is located in the city centre close to St Andrew's Square. Tikets can be purchased online to the best fares.

BY CAR Journey time by car is usually less then one hour depending on traffic. Follow signs for M8 motorway which is the most direct route by road to Edinburgh.
