G

lasgow Film Festival (GFF) has announced the full programme for its 2021 festival, with screenings hosted on Glasgow Film’s new online viewing platform Glasgow Film At Home.

The programme contains six World premieres, two European premieres and 49 UK premieres. GFF is committed to bringing incredible cinema from filmmakers all around the world to our audiences. Tickets will go on sale from 12 noon on Monday 18 January online. More information is available at www.glasgowfilm. org./festival.

Back to the Wharf

Originally planned as a hybrid in-cinema and online festival, GFF21 will now take place online only, due to the lockdown restrictions affecting most of Scotland and the rest of the UK. The festival will open on Wednesday 24 February with Lee Isaac Chung’s autobiographical drama following a Korean-American family Minari, starring The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, and close on Sunday 7 March with Suzanne Lindon’s debut feature Spring Blossom, a coming-of-age tale set against a dreamy Parisian backdrop.

This year’s Industry programme will run online between Monday 1 and Saturday 6 March. We are thrilled to announce a new scheme to support filmmakers around the UK, aged under 30, to access our full Industry programme for just £10, sponsored by MUBI. Passes are limited and we actively encourage applications from individuals currently under-represented in the screen industries, which includes writers, directors, and producers from ethnic minority backgrounds, disabled and D/deaf people, the LGBTIQI+ community, and women. Industry passes are available to purchase now at www.glasgowfilm.org./festival.

GFF is one of the leading film festivals in the UK and run by Glasgow Film, a charity which also runs Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT). T

he Film Festival welcomes back Scottish filmmaker Anthony Baxter (Flint, GFF 2020) for the World premiere of Eye of the Storm, which follows one of Scotland’s most gifted painters, James Morrison, through the last two years of his life.

With animation from Catriona Black and a soundtrack from Karine Polwart, the result is a fond, affectionate portrait of the man and his legacy.

As a festival that has always been strongly rooted in our home city Glasgow, we are excited to bring the World premiere of Creation Stories to our audiences.

Written by Irvine Welsh and starring GFF favourite Ewen Bremner, Creation Stories charts the rise of the infamous founder of Creation Records, Alan McGee. Directed

by Nick Moran, the incredible cast includes Jason Isaacs, Suki Waterhouse and Rebecca Root. Creation Stories will be available on Sky Cinema from March 20.

Yer Old Faither, from Adelaide Fringe director Heather Croall receives its UK premiere.

Narrated by playwright and actor Gary McNair, it explores the life of her father, Glaswegian John Croall, who moved to Australia in 1970 and bought hundreds of children into the world as a local obstetrician.

Stacey Lee’s uplifting documentary Underplayed is an intimate and revealing look at gender inequality in the electronic dance music scene, which features the city of Glasgow and local DJ Nightwave.

David Whitney’s Killing Escobar reconstructs Scottish mercenary and exSAS operative Peter McAleese’s mission to assassinate Pablo Escobar, as McAleese, now 78, reflects on his demons.

Bridging the Gap – Turbulence will showcase four shorts from the Scottish Documentary Institute’s emerging talent initiative including: Against the Tide;

Harmonic Spectrum; Racing Stock and Everyman.

A deadpan comedy-drama following a Syrian refugee (Amir El-Masry) who finds himself in a refugee centre on a remote Scottish island Also jooning the group is an extended edition of Iorram (Boat Song), the first feature documentary filmed entirely in Scottish Gaelic.

Directed by the award-winning Alastair Cole and with an original score composed and performed by folk musician Aidan O’Rourke, it is a haunting evocation of life among the fishing communities of the Outer Hebrides.

lasgow is a cool city destination. As host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games the city showed the world its new and vibrant identity and it only takes a few hours in Glasgow to realise you are experiencing one of the best places in Europe. The City Centre, Merchant City and West End are vibrant and filled with superb attractions, world class shopping, fabulous dining, stylish bars and

cafes as well as wonderful nightlife.

Regardless of your budget or length of stay Glasgow has something for everyone.

Getting around is easy with its compact size and easy grid layout.

Exploring the city centre on foot is a great idea. From most downtown hotels you are within easy reach of a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. There is so much to do and such variety it’s no wonder that Glasgow is recognised as the best UK shopping, dining and late night destination outside of London.

The city’s attractions are stunning and not at all expensive to visit. Many have free entry while others charge really low

entry fees. The best way to see more of the city for less and visit all the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the big red City Sightseeing bus tour. With tickets valid for two days you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Also try The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground metro system. Use it to visit the West End or other neighbourhoods easily.

Getting around Glasgow G

lasgow has an excellent transport system that makes exploring the city easy and affordable. If you arrive by air into Glasgow International the best tip is to use the Glasgow Shuttle airport to city bus link which operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day.

Once in the city there are lots of ways to get about but if you are in town for more than one day then one of the best ways to see more of the city for less and sample the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the red, open top City Sightseeing bus tour.

Your ticket is valid for two days and you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Or jump onto The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground rail network.

These fast little trains will carry you around under the city and makes exploring the West End, South Side and other neighbourhoods really easy. Enquire at SPT Travel centres, they will direct you to the best value deals available.

If you plan a day trip out of the city it’s likely that there is a direct fast train or bus service to your destination. Edinburgh, Stirling and the Loch Lomond area are no more than 50 minutes away and easily visited in one day.

For trips further out you can get great car rental rates from Arnold Clark, a local and reliable rental company.

Biking in Glasgow

Glasgow’s Free Cycle Hire Offer Extended until Spring 2021 C

ycling for those everyday journeys just got easier, with the news that our free cycle hire offer through the nextbike scheme will continue to be available until spring 2021.

The first 30 minutes of standard nextbike cycle hire has been at no cost to the hirer.

For casual users of the scheme, every rental under 30 minutes duration has been free of charge, and for existing subscribers, this has been extended to the first 60 minutes of any hire. There is no limit on the number of times this offer can be used by a person.

Funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places, which is Paths for All’s programme to increase active and sustainable travel throughout Scotland (grant-funded by Transport Scotland), Glasgow’s free cycle hire offer will be extended until March 2021.

The free 30 minute offer has certainly encouraged the people of Glasgow to travel actively, with nextbike hire numbers up by almost 25% for the first month of the launch in comparison with the same period last year.

The whole tour is outside and the route is generally flat and has been designed using cycle paths, river and canal pathways and minor roads with very little traffic. Appropriate safety measures have been put in place with guides wearing face coverings where distancing can’t be maintained and bikes and helmets are sanitised between every ride. A 20% discount is currently being offered to locals and groups.

Making space for cyclists Glasgow City Council’s Spaces for People programme has been developed to give cyclists and pedestrians more space to roam in the city centre and encourage more active travel. It aims to deliver 36km of new cycle lanes across the city and cycle parking at 50 new locations.

There is already a new Clydeside pop-up cycle lane which provides dedicated space for cyclists travelling west and runs for 1.5 miles between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and more cycle parking has been installed in George Square. This spectacular museum was designed by the internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid and sits on the banks of the River Clyde, site of the famous Clyde shipbuilding industry. The museum features the largest object in Glasgow Museums’ collection, the South African Railways locomotive 3007, as well as the world’s oldest bicycle and a recreated early 1900’s street. This is no conventional transport museum though – the stories of the people who made, drove and used transport are centre-stage with the objects.

82 Hillhead Street. G12 8QQ The Mackintosh House is a meticulous reassemblage of the principal interiors from the Mackintoshes’ Glasgow home. The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodelled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The principal interiors were decorated in his distinctive style, remarkable then, and now, for the disciplined austerity of the furnishings and decoration.

new book, Coming Into View: Eric Watt's Photographs of Glasgow, is an evocative collection of almost 100 images, skillfully captured by the late, amateur photographer Eric Watt.

They are part of a huge body of work his family donated to Glasgow Museums after his death.

Some of the most well-known aspects of city life are depicted in his photographs. The book includes essays about Eric Watt’s life and career, written by Glasgow Museums' Curators Isobel McDonald, and by Alison Brown.

Graham Watt, Eric Watt’s brother, said: “It all started when Eric was 13. He got a small camera for Christmas in 1947. I got nothing so exciting.

And so he acquired an interest which absorbed him for the rest of his life. He always left the house with at least two cameras round his neck should he see something of interest, which he nearly always did.

Then it was back to his bedroom which had a huge cabinet containing all his developing paraphernalia. He then spent the evenings mounting his slides and finally the family were entertained to a show among which are the historical pictures contained in this book.

We are very proud that somewhat late in the day he should be afforded this recognition and my thanks are due to Glasgow Museums for making this possible.”

t Enoch Centre is located in Glasgow's busy city centre, one of the UK's top shopping destinations outside London nd has played a part in the city's life for more than 200 years.

St Enoch Square was originally opened in 1783 as a grazing area for sheep and since then it has seen some of Glasgow’s finest landmarks come and go.

The St Enoch Railway Station first opened its doors in 1876 and the St. Enoch Hotel followed in 1879.

When the Hotel closed in 1974 the site was used as a car park until 1985 when work started on St Enoch Centre.

Established for over 40 years and winner of numerous awards, La Lanterna is considered one of Glasgow’s finest Italian restaurants, so there is no better person to guide you as Chris reflects on his home city of Glasgow.

What really makes Glasgow different

from anywhere else in Scotland is the cosmopolitan make-up of the city, and because of this there are a whole host of different food types to try when dining.

Whether its Indian, Chinese, French, Japanese, traditional British or indeed our own Italian specialities, there is a variety in Glasgow that is just not found in other cities.

Over the last few years this diversity has grown, putting Glasgow on a par

with London in terms of the rich dining experiences the city has to offer.

Glasgow city centre itself is a great place to go for sophisticated shopping during the day but even more special for evening dining experiences with restaurants and bars mostly staying open until quite late (although for the time being that means 10pm closing!) which allows you plenty of time to enjoy what the city has to offer.

Our own restaurant, La Lanterna on Hope Street is just across from Central Station, meaning that we frequently welcome visitors to the city, popping in to enjoy our traditional Italian cuisine after a busy day of sightseeing, shopping or following a hectic day at a conference.

Because Glasgow is also host to so many fabulous concerts, shows and exhibitions, every hospitality business in the city must showcase what the city has to offer and deliver it to you with the style, quality and service that you would expect from a world leading city destination.

The city offers visitors a fantastic variety of things to do once the sun goes down.

The choice is vast.

The city boasts some of Scotland’s best theatres and performing companies playing to packed houses at the Tron, Kings, Royal, Tramway or Citizen’s Theatres where there is an ever changing menu of great shows, plays, variety and panto.

There are some great live music and concert venues, in fact too many to list, but its definitely worth checking what’s on in places such as the SECC, the Hydro Arena, Royal Concert Hall, City Halls, Barrowlands,

O2ABC and O2 Academy where some of the world’s top artists regularly perform.

There are also lots of smaller, more intimate places all around the city where you can enjoy your night. The famous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut or Oran Mor both have an awesome reputation for great music while if the very best of stand up comedy takes your fancy then a night out at the Stand Comedy Club will leave you heading back to your hotel with a smile on your face.

If loud, late and electric is more to your liking then glam up for a night out at one of the city’s many fabulous clubs such as the Arches, Sub Club, Nice N Sleazy or 13th Note where you can find music, dancing, cocktails and fun until the wee small hours.

lasgow Merchant City is a neighbourhood with its own identity located within the city centre area. Like many inner city areas throughout the world, the Merchant City has transformed itself from a former commercial trading area into the cool, chic haven of style that exists today. But it wasn’t always that way.

The Merchant City is one of the oldest quarters of Glasgow and has been the home to monks, merchants and merry makers for centuries. lasgow’s West End district is only about two miles away from the city centre but a world away in terms of its unique character and style. To prepare for delegates arriving as guests in our city, we have an opportunity to showcase the sustainable efforts of the Tourism and Events industry who are doing their part, as businesses, to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis.

he focus for 2021 is creating three Climate Action Blueprints - for Tour Operators, Accommodation Providers and Destinations.

They will enable anyone in these sectors to deliver their Climate Action Plans.

The blueprints will combine the frameworks, tools, best practice and resources required for delivering Climate Action Plans that align tourism with the need to reduce global emissions by at least half by 2030 and keep global warming within 1.5 degrees C. Tourism Declares will work with our members inside the Tourism Declares community to co-create the Blueprints transparently and collaboratively, and according to our climate equity and justice commitments.

We’ll post updates in our newsletters, and will regularly share content on the main website to encourage wider consultation and contributions. Even if you haven’t declared, we want to hear from you.

We’ll publish the three Blueprints by COP26 in November as free resources for anyone to use. We hope they will be adopted as the standard approach to transforming our industry.

Tell us what you need or know, so your challenges, experiences, expertise and solutions help frame the content and ensure our Blueprints are relevant and useful.

NAVVIES’ BARGE

Navvies’ Barge is a social enterprise canal boat moored at Applecross Basin. The barge runs boat trips along Glasgow’s stretch of the canal and hosts a café and a variety of workshops, making the waterway more accessible to people in the local community.

Customers can enjoy a day out on the barge, make themselves at home on-board with a buffet and relax their way along the canal.

The barge is also shared with community groups in order to open up the canal and the benefits of time on the water with as many people as possible.

Established as a workers’ co-operative, Navvies’ Barge pays tribute to the workers who made the canal – the navvies. The social enterprise aims to empower people in their work and remind them of the power of worker solidarity.

GLASGOW TOOL LIBRARY

Glasgow Tool Library is a charity located at Civic House which lends and share tools, instead of books. They also hold classes, workshops and events that teach a range of craft, DIY and sustainability skills and knowledge.

Glasgow Tool Library collects donations of tools from those that no longer use them, repairs and cares for them, and saves them from going to landfill. Creating a community resource not only reduces your carbon footprint, it also saves people money. From supporting practical DIY, gardening and home improvements, to furniture making and artistic projects, Glasgow Tool Library will provide the tools you need.

HAMILTONHILL CLAYPITS LOCAL NATURE RESERVE

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. THE LOADING BAY SKATEPARK

The 30,000 sq ft space features a street plaza, a 60ft long bowl, movable modular ramps and training room with trampolines, gymnastics flooring and foam pits and a café. The Loading Bay is the result of a collaboration between internationally acclaimed skate ramp company Vision Ramps, whose past collaborators include Red Bull and the team behind the new James Bond movie, and Scottish Canals. The West Highland Line ...

he world famous West Highland Line with its quaint Swiss chalet stations was voted the World’s Best Railway Journey by readers of the Wanderlust travel magazine ... and not without reason.

The route from Glasgow to Mallaig and Fortwilliam snakes its way through stunning countryside and across breathtaking ravines spanned by stunning concrete structures which were record breaking and revolutionary when they were built.

Borrodale Burn bridge became the world’s longest concrete span at 127 feet, and Glenfinnan Viaduct was a huge structure in concrete at 416 yards long with 21 arches.

This historic route combines the romance of the Scottish Highlands with the breathtaking beauty of the rural countryside and adds a little bit of Harry Potter magic along the way.

This is one train journey you will never forget whether you travel on newly-refurbished, regular ScotRail trains or the Jacobite Steam Train

Glasgow to Crianlarich

F

rom Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde.

Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’.

At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World

War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.

& Tarbet station, the world-renowned bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond appear on the right.

Approaching Arrochar, look left for great views of the celebrated ‘Arrochar Alps’, including such craggy peaks as the Beinn Narnain, Beinn Ime and the well-loved Cobbler. Shortly after departing Arrochar

Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information!

Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding Loch Lomond before arriving in Crianlarich.

Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

Crianlarich to Fort William/ Mallaig

J

ust beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve.

Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle.

Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor.

After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left.

Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only

Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land ‘Local Hero’ starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi. You’ll also cross Scotland’s shortest river, area with a base circumference of 24 miles.

From Fort William you’ll soon be heading off on which runs out of our deepest loch - Loch Morar.

As you approach Mallaig take in the breaththe final section of the Line, en route to Mallaig. taking jagged peaks of Skye.

Almost as soon as your journey begins the line crosses part of the Caledonian Canal, Britain’s longest inland waterway, which links Fort William with Inverness. To the right is IN AND AROUND Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight canal locks.

The curve of the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct sweeps you past the head of Loch Shiel and GUIDE the monument to Bonnie Prince January2021 Charlie, marking where he landed and unfurled his standard in 1745 to start the Jacobite Rebellion.

After passing through the beautiful lochs and hills surrounding Lochailort and Beasdale, you arrive in Arisaig – a popular tourist spot with due to its spectacular views over Loch Nan Ceall where you can see the islands of Rum and Eigg. Crianlarich to Oban

T

he Oban line passes through Tyndrum Lower and takes you through beautiful Glen Lochy to Dalmally; and just beyond stands the ruin of Kilchurn Castle, ancient stronghold of Clan Campbell.

Around the head of Loch Awe is the Pass of Brander, which skirts the towering bulk of Ben Cruachan – the Hollow Mountain – which conceals a fascinating secret; the mountain caverns house an innovative hydro power scheme inside. To the left is the River Awe, setting for Sir Walter Scott’s romance ‘The Highland Widow’.

Nearing Oban now and approaching Connel Ferry, you can see the Falls of Lora, a tidal race at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive.

This natural occurrence, caused by a fast-moving tide, produces white rapids that can last for up to five days.

Your final stop on this section of the Line, Oban, is a popular tourist destination, well-known for its many seafood restaurants.
