LASGOW’S annual folk, roots and world music festival, Celtic Connections celebrates Celtic music and its connections to cultures across the globe. From 15 January – 2 February 2021, due to the ongoing global pandemic, the festival will be delivered digitally for the very first time. Over 100 musicians will be streamed onto screens around the world for 19 days of exclusive concerts, workshops, and free events. Celtic Connections is programmed by Creative Director (and founding member of Celtic supergroup Capercaillie) Donald Shaw, and in previous years has featured more than 300 events across multiple genres of music. The festival is renowned for its strong spirit of collaboration, bringing together one-off lineups for very special one night only collaborative shows. The festival has broadened its reach and in 2012 brought a taste of Celtic Connections to the Isle of Skye as part of the Year of Scotland’s Islands, as well as visiting Chicago as part

of Year of Creative Scotland to programme various musical performances throughout the Ryder Cup, including the Opening and Closing ceremonies along with a number of other hospitality events. In 2014, with the support of Homecoming Scotland, the festival staged a special one-off collaboration in the SSE Hydro, an exciting new large scale venue in Glasgow. This concert was part of the busiest weekend ever for Celtic Connections in which 25,000 music fans attended performances in the space of 48 hours. The festival also programmed a number of outdoor performances for Culture 2014 - the spectacular cultural celebrations surrounding Glasgow 2014. In 2015 the festival won the Art and Culture Award at the Inspiring City Awards ceremony organised by the Herald and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in association with People Make Glasgow. The awards were created to celebrate the people and organisations that make Glasgow great.

As host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games the city showed the world its new and vibrant identity and it only takes a few hours in Glasgow to realise you are experiencing one of the best places in Europe. The City Centre, Merchant City and West End are vibrant and filled with superb attractions, world class shopping, fabulous dining, stylish bars and

cafes as well as wonderful nightlife. Regardless of your budget or length of stay Glasgow has something for everyone. Getting around is easy with its compact size and easy grid layout. Exploring the city centre on foot is a great idea. From most downtown hotels you are within easy reach of a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. There is so much to do and such variety it’s no wonder that Glasgow is recognised as the best UK shopping, dining and late night destination outside of London. The city’s attractions are stunning and not at all expensive to visit. Many have free entry while others charge really low

entry fees. The best way to see more of the city for less and visit all the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the big red City Sightseeing bus tour. With tickets valid for two days you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Also try The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground metro system. lasgow has an excellent transport system that makes exploring the city easy and affordable. If you arrive by air into Glasgow International the best tip is to use the Glasgow Shuttle airport to city bus link which operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Once in the city there are lots of ways to get about but if you are in town for more than one day then one of the best ways to see more of the city for less and sample the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the red, open top City Sightseeing bus tour. Your ticket is valid for two days and you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Or jump onto The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground rail network. These fast little trains will carry you around under the city and makes exploring the West End, South Side and other neighbourhoods really easy. Enquire at SPT Travel centres, they will direct you to the best value deals available. If you plan a day trip out of the city it’s likely that there is a direct fast train or bus service to your destination. Edinburgh, Stirling and the Loch Lomond area are no more than 50 minutes away and easily visited in one day. For trips further out you can get great car rental rates from Arnold Clark, a local and reliable rental company.

Glasgow’s Free Cycle Hire Offer Extended until Spring 2021 C

ycling for those everyday journeys just got easier, with the news that our free cycle hire offer through the nextbike scheme will continue to be available until spring 2021.

The first 30 minutes of standard nextbike cycle hire has been at no cost to the hirer. For casual users of the scheme, every rental under 30 minutes duration has been free of charge, and for existing subscribers, this has been extended to the first 60 minutes of any hire. There is no limit on the number of times this offer can be used by a person.

Funded by Smarter Choices Smarter Places, which is Paths for All’s programme to increase active and sustainable travel throughout Scotland (grant-funded by Transport Scotland), Glasgow’s free cycle hire offer will be extended until March 2021. The free 30 minute offer has certainly encouraged the people of Glasgow to travel actively, with nextbike hire numbers up by almost 25% for the first month of the launch in comparison with the same period last year.

Where to pick up your Next Bike

07786 683445 www.glasgowbiketours.co.uk Ride along and take in some sightseeing with Glasgow Bike Tours. Visit locations where you can see spectacular views of the city, not possible by bus or car. The whole tour is outside and the route is generally flat and has been designed using cycle paths, river and canal pathways and minor roads with very little traffic. Appropriate safety measures have been put in place with guides wearing face coverings where distancing can’t be maintained and bikes and helmets are sanitised between every ride. Making space for cyclists Glasgow City Council’s Spaces for People programme has been developed to give cyclists and pedestrians more space to roam in the city centre and encourage more active travel. It aims to deliver 36km of new cycle lanes across the city and cycle parking at 50 new locations. There is already a new Clydeside pop-up cycle lane which provides dedicated space for cyclists travelling west and runs for 1.5 miles between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and more cycle parking has been installed in George Square. This spectacular museum was designed by the internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid and sits on the banks of the River Clyde, site of the famous Clyde shipbuilding industry. The museum features the largest object in Glasgow Museums’ collection, the South African Railways locomotive 3007, as well as the world’s oldest bicycle and a recreated early 1900’s street. This is no conventional transport museum though – the stories of the people who made, drove and used transport are centre-stage with the objects.

82 Hillhead Street. G12 8QQ The Mackintosh House is a meticulous reassemblage of the principal interiors from the Mackintoshes’ Glasgow home. The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodelled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. new book, Coming Into View: Eric Watt's Photographs of Glasgow, is an evocative collection of almost 100 images, skillfully captured by the late, amateur photographer Eric Watt. They are part of a huge body of work his family donated to Glasgow Museums after his death. Some of the most well-known aspects of city life are depicted in his photographs. The book includes essays about Eric Watt’s life and career, written by Glasgow Museums' Curators Isobel McDonald, and by Alison Brown. Graham Watt, Eric Watt’s brother, said: “It all started when Eric was 13. He got a small camera for Christmas in 1947. I got nothing so exciting. And so he acquired an interest which absorbed him for the rest of his life. He always left the house with at least two cameras round his neck should he see something of interest, which he nearly always did. Then it was back to his bedroom which had a huge cabinet containing all his developing paraphernalia. He then spent the evenings mounting his slides and finally the family were entertained to a show among which are the historical pictures contained in this book. We are very proud that somewhat late in the day he should be afforded this recognition and my thanks are due to Glasgow Museums for making this possible.” Available to order from BookSource

t Enoch Centre is located in Glasgow's busy city centre, one of the UK's top shopping destinations outside London nd has played a part in the city's life for more than 200 years. St Enoch Square was originally opened in 1783 as a grazing area for sheep and since then it has seen some of Glasgow’s finest landmarks come and go. The St Enoch Railway Station first opened its doors in 1876 and the St. Enoch Hotel followed in 1879. When the Hotel closed in 1974 the site was used as a car park until 1985 when work started on St Enoch Centre. Since opening on May 25, 1989, St Enoch Centre has consistently led the way for shopping centres in Scotland, inspiring the growth of Glasgow’s vibrant retail sector and underwent a major refurbishment programme to add more retail space and enhance the entrance facing onto Argyle Street in 1998. In 2005 work started on an extensive £150 million redevelopment and refurbishment programme. The first phase of the redevelopment was unveiled in November 2009 with the opening of world famous toy store Hamleys, and completed in May 2010, welcoming a range of new and exclusive stores as well as cafes and restaurants overlooking St Enoch Square.

NAVVIES’ BARGE

Navvies’ Barge is a social enterprise canal boat moored at Applecross Basin. The barge runs boat trips along Glasgow’s stretch of the canal and hosts a café and a variety of workshops, making the waterway more accessible to people in the local community. Customers can enjoy a day out on the barge, make themselves at home on-board with a buffet and relax their way along the canal. The barge is also shared with community groups in order to open up the canal and the benefits of time on the water with as many people as possible. Established as a workers’ co-operative, Navvies’ Barge pays tribute to the workers who made the canal – the navvies. The social enterprise aims to empower people in their work and remind them of the power of worker solidarity.

GLASGOW TOOL LIBRARY

Glasgow Tool Library is a charity located at Civic House which lends and share tools, instead of books. They also hold classes, workshops and events that teach a range of craft, DIY and sustainability skills and knowledge. Glasgow Tool Library collects donations of tools from those that no longer use them, repairs and cares for them, and saves them from going to landfill. Creating a community resource not only reduces your carbon footprint, it also saves people money. HAMILTONHILL CLAYPITS LOCAL NATURE RESERVE

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. THE LOADING BAY SKATEPARK

The Loading Bay is the result of a collaboration between internationally acclaimed skate ramp company Vision Ramps, whose past collaborators include Red Bull and the team behind the new James Bond movie, and Scottish Canals. The route from Glasgow to Mallaig and Fortwilliam snakes its way through stunning countryside and across breathtaking ravines spanned by stunning concrete structures which were record breaking and revolutionary when they were built. Borrodale Burn bridge became the world’s longest concrete span at 127 feet, and Glenfinnan Viaduct was a huge structure in concrete at 416 yards long with 21 arches. This historic route combines the romance of the Scottish Highlands with the breathtaking beauty of the rural countryside and adds a little bit of Harry Potter magic along the way. Glasgow to Crianlarich

rom Glasgow Queen Street station the train travels uphill towards the Kilpatrick hills, providing impressive views of the Erskine Bridge and down the Clyde Estuary towards the Firth of Clyde. Pass through the small villages and towns on the Clyde – such as Bowling, Dumbarton (with its celebrated castle), Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived) and Garelochhead – you will be treated to your first glimpse of the ‘Arrochar Alps’. At Garelochhead station you get stunning panoramic views of the Gare Loch, with Loch Long just starting to come into view. The jetty below is Finnart deep-water terminal, built by the US Navy during the Second World

War. Tankers discharge their oil here to be pumped by pipeline to Grangemouth, 60 miles away to the east.

Across the loch, dominated by the towering presence of Ben Lomond, this area was once home to Rob Roy MacGregor, legendary warrior, robber and folk hero. He used to question captives in a nearby cave – and wasn’t averse to dipping them in the loch to extract information! Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding Loch Lomond before arriving in Crianlarich. Here the train line divides, with the western route turning towards Oban, and the north continuing up to Fort William and Mallaig.

Crianlarich to Fort William/ Mallaig

ust beyond Upper Tyndrum, the northbound fork of the West Highland Line navigates the massive sentinels of Beinn Odhar and Beinn Dorain in the unique Horseshoe Curve. Next stop is Bridge of Orchy - well known to walkers and climbers alike as a landmark hamlet on the West Highland Way – where nearby you’ll find the ruin of Achallader Castle. Passing Loch Tulla on the left, the line starts to cross the wild Rannoch Moor, a vast wilderness, where the railway ‘floats’ on top of the moor on a mattress of tree roots, brushwood, earth and ashes. Arriving at Corrour, you are now 1350 feet above sea level - the highest mainline station in the UK. The station is one of the most remote in Britain (the nearest road is 10 miles away) and is also famous for appearing in the hit film ‘Trainspotting’ (and the sequel) starring Ewan McGregor. After passing through Tulloch and shortly before arriving in Roy Bridge, look out for the foaming waters of Monessie Gorge on the left. Once you have passed through Spean Bridge, just before the train pulls into Fort William, the massive bulk of the Nevis Range comes into full view. At just over 4,400ft, Ben Nevis is not only

Britain’s highest mountain but covers a huge land area with a base circumference of 24 miles. From Fort William you’ll soon be heading off on the final section of the Line, en route to Mallaig. Almost as soon as your journey begins the line crosses part of the Caledonian Canal, Britain’s longest inland waterway, which links Fort William with Inverness. To the right is Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight canal locks. The curve of the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct sweeps you past the head of Loch Shiel and the monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie, marking where he landed and unfurled his standard in 1745 to start the Jacobite Rebellion. After passing through the beautiful lochs and hills surrounding Lochailort and Beasdale, you arrive in Arisaig – a popular tourist spot with

Less than 10 minutes later you’ll see the spectacular silver sands of Morar, made famous in the 1983 film ‘Local Hero’ starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Capaldi. Crianlarich to Oban

he Oban line passes through Tyndrum Lower and takes you through beautiful Glen Lochy to Dalmally; and just beyond stands the ruin of Kilchurn Castle, ancient stronghold of Clan Campbell.

Around the head of Loch Awe is the Pass of Brander, which skirts the towering bulk of Ben Cruachan – the Hollow Mountain – which conceals a fascinating secret; the mountain caverns house an innovative hydro power scheme inside. To the left is the River Awe, setting for Sir Walter Scott’s romance ‘The Highland Widow’. Nearing Oban now and approaching Connel Ferry, you can see the Falls of Lora, a tidal race at the narrow entrance to Loch Etive. This natural occurrence, caused by a fast-moving tide, produces white rapids that can last for up to five days. Your final stop on this section of the Line, Oban, is a popular tourist destination, well-known for its many seafood restaurants.
