Tioga St. | artspartner.org VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/capartspace Jessica Stratton, Resilient Jessica's exhibit of photography and mixed media focuses on her experiences with chronic illnesses and how they have affected her body and spirit. The exhibit features Jessica's mixed media and photography works, along with a conversational work titled "resilenceRSVP" that written statements sharing her and others stories of resilience and perseverance. "My work is rooted in the physical breakdown of the human body alongside the persistence of the human spirit. Investigating my own illnesses in a series of visual works led me to the realization that being repeatedly broken and put back together resulted in my tenacious character. Instead of being ashamed of my weaknesses, I began to take pride in them. Seeing how my life experiences shaped who I have become, I began to wonder: What makes us resilient? How do we embody trauma and move forward? My work is biographical but aims to honor how we collectively endure. 2. Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) 330 E. M.L.K., Jr. / State St. | csma-ithaca.org WINDOW DISPLAY + VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/ csma Modern Comfort 2020: Quilts of the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild Curated by the Ithaca Modern Quilt Guild (IMQG), this virtual exhibition reflects the vibrant innovation and creative vitality of the quilters who are part of the modern quilting community in and around Ithaca. The show is organized around four design aesthetics that are common to modern quilting—Modern Traditionalism, Negative Space, Improvisation, and Asymmetry. The quilts range in size from a diminutive piece barely a foot square, to wall hangings and lap quilts, to the bed-size benefit quilt the guild created and generously donated to CSMA for fundraising.
The benefit quilt, “The Early Birds Organize Their Stash,” is aptly named for its spring theme, celebrated with gorgeous design and stitchery. This quilt has been installed inside CSMA's main window for up-close viewing from outside the building at 330 E. MLK/State Street, as well as virtual viewing within the exhibition. Silent auction bids may be made at www.32auctions.com/ CSMAquilt from June 5 through July 31 to benefit CSMA. In this time of quarantining and social distancing, "normal" or "traditional" ways of living can seem lost to us. We hope this show gets you excited about the power and beauty of innovating in the midst of unfamiliar circumstances. Sunny Days 215 The Commons | sunnydaysny.com VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/sunnydaysny Matthew Petti, Assemblages Since childhood I’ve been attracted to scraps. Age-worn and discarded, they are nevertheless evocative: rusty metal, broken crockery, pieces of wood, glass shards, weirdly sculpted rocks. The bits assembled for this exhibit have been collected over thirty-plus years in and around Ithaca. I get a little thrill I can’t explain when I discover these things, often literally digging them up. To me there’s something determined in their insistent survival despite age and brokenness. The compositions arrange themselves: artifacts seem to want to play together, mixing shapes, colors, textures, and eras. Ithaca’s beauty and magic provides the spark needed for alchemy. 5. Petrune 126 E. State St. | Petrune.com WINDOW DISPLAY + VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/ petrune Kadie Salfi, Blue Dancers About Kadie: Using an appealing Pop palate, Kadie Salfi depicts objects of depredation, destruction, and desire. From her early silkscreens of bubblegum-hued bomber planes to her series of Arabian camels printed on brightly-dyed plaster with pure crude oil, Salfi presents trenchant social and personal commentary with a sly stylishness. Throughout the 2010s, she put American gun culture in the crosshairs: trophy species were rendered in Ben-Day dots and various models of firearms were painted with lustrous splashes of over-the-counter beauty products and captioned with unsettling statements of provenance or prophecy: “To kill his wife” or “To kill your daughter.” This ongoing project culminated in Every Sixteen Hours, a solo show at Brooklyn’s pioneering A.I.R. Gallery, after which Salfi reached back into her own family remembrances to create Sweet Tender Love, her most personal—and yet her most broadly resonant—series of work to date. Eva Bohn & Ann Reichlin, Double Take Bakes (Display located next door in the former Sheldon Hill windows) Eva Bohn and her mother Ann Reichlin have teamed up to make, Double-Take Bakes, a fanciful bakery made from plaster, paint, wood, and wire. Home early from college due to COVID-19 cancellations, Eva is sculpting magical cakes, pies, tarts and treats. Ann is making the sculptural serving dishes and display structure. Originally installed on their Fall Creek front porch and then in their yard, Double-Take Bakes will be on display in the storefront next to Petrune. 6. State of the Art Gallery 120 W. Emergence: Works by Eight Member Artists(Mary Ann Bowman, Patricia Brown, Don Ellis, Daniel McPheeters, Diane Newton, Diana Ozolins, Patty Porter, Nancy Ridenour) The title Emergence invokes at once the universal and the just now sprung upon us. Perhaps we eight were thinking at such polarities as we selected the name. Or perhaps, we were acknowledging the wildly autodidactic nature of visual art, thinking about what somehow emerges, unexpected, from our brushes, needles, hammers, cameras, from our very fingers. 7. Handwork 102 W. M.L.K., Jr. / State St. | handwork.coop Pottery demonstration by Renata Wadsworth - tune in at facebook.com/ HandworkIthaca/ - LiveJune 5, 2020 at 6:00pm Renata Wadsworth, Ceramics Artist Renata Wadsworth has been working with clay since 1997. She learned to
throw on the wheel at the Rochester Folk Art Guild in Middlesex, NY where she apprenticed for nearly 8 years. After that, she spent a few years honing her skills while working for numerous production potters and began to develop her own evolving body of work in 2006. Renata built and learned to fire 2 wood kilns and was published in ‘Wood Fired Ceramics, 100 Contemporary Artists’. She is a member of the Ithaca Farmers Market, Handwork Artisan Cooperative and a founding member and host Potter for the Finger Lakes Pottery Tour. Her work can be found in private collections across the country as well as several stores and galleries. 8. Cat’s Pajamas 215 N. Cayuga St. (inside Dewitt Mall) | Find us on Facebook VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/CatsPajamas A long long time ago when The Cat’s Pajamas in the DeWitt Mall was celebrating 20 years in business....an idea was hatched to create a Celebration Mural. In order to cover up an unsightly, often heard, running pipe that could not be removed, a cover-up began. The Dewitt Building, designed by William Henry Miller and built in the early 1900’s. It was the original Ithaca High School and Boynton Middle School until the mid-60’s. The building is old and iconic and some things must “remain as they are....to keep the place together.” To the imaginative eye, the pipe looked like an exotic tree branch, and so it was decorated as such. Then the tree branch looked lonely and needed an injection of LIFE! Enter Annemarie Zwack. Artist, Outside-the-box thinker, Engaged Citizen and all around good sport. When she was presented with the challenge of bringing life to the wall, she said, “Why Not!“ All of the flora and fauna you see on the wall were carefully researched at the Cornell library by Zwack. She depicted examples from jungles and rainforests from around the world. The mural represents plants and the weather conditions of these eco-zones. The mural is an astounding piece of art in all light and all seasons. 9. The Mink Gallery 614 N. Cayuga St. (right before Yates St.) | barbaramink.com VIRTUAL GALLERY EXHIBIT: downtownithaca.com/TheMinkGallery Barbara Mink Artist Statement I am exhilarated by creating and counterbalancing formal oppositions of line and color, form and space, light and dark, organic and architectonic, diffusion and thickening, surface and depth. I struggle to bring out the mysterious and ineffable beyond the mundane. Even when tending toward the monochromatic, color is always an important part of my work: it is energy, emotion, life. Whatever I devise in terms of hue, saturation, and vibrancy must be met with a restraining force or structure, and I increasingly explore processes that set different qualities of color, pigment, and texture against each other. I do believe that beauty affects not only how we feel but how we behave. I think we’re hardwired to appreciate beauty in music, art and literature; as the daughter of an artist, I imbibed the principles of art making and great art at an early age, and am constantly seeking new directions rather than staying with one style or point of view.
