Located just one block north of The Commons is one of downtown’s long cherished treasures, the Dewitt Mall. S imply walk north on Cayuga Street to find this historic, multilevel, multi-use building.

This former high school building was originally designed by famed architect William Henry Miller and later transformed into a center showcasing an assortment of one-of-a-kind independently owned shops including Ithacamade, a gift shop selling handcrafted pottery, home decor, and apparel including Silk Oak clothing; Fibers, a women’s fashion boutique featuring hand woven jackets, colorful pashminas and handcrafted jewelry along with athletic and street wear for teens and tweens. Plus, there’s three casual eateries: Moosewood Restaurant, the orginal, worldfamous vegetarian pioneer, La Bodega, known for its fancy Spanish meats and spices; and Cafe Dewitt, which is legendary for its weekend brunch. Plus, satisfy your sweet tooth with the rich and creamy homemade ice cream at Cayuga Lake Creamery. This unique urban mall also includes member-owned retail cooperatives, Buffalo Street Books and Greenstar Oasis Natural Foods. Additional specialty stores in the mall offer everything from modern toys at The Cat’s Pajamas, rare coins at Cayuga Coins, and high quality, brand name musical instruments at Ithaca Guitar Works.

In 2022, Dewitt Mall turns 50! What was once a high school is now what some might consider the very first instance of a mixed-used building.
