DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN is also back with light installations at various parks, including a brand-new, glistening, 28-foottall winter tree at Peace and Friendship Park.

For many, the holidays are characterized by being in the company of your closest friends and family gathered around fantastic food. This is certainly true for Christine Allen, owner of Brawta Jamaican Jerk Joint, who has fond memories of large family gatherings with bountiful tables growing up in Jamaica.

A highlight was her Aunt Naomi’s Jamaican fruit cake, a staple on the family holiday table. “I remember being in the kitchen with my cousins and Aunt Naomi, being tasked with mixing the batter with a wooden spoon,” Christine says, smiling as she recounts her memories. “And of course, we were rewarded for our help when she let us lick the bowl afterwards!”

When she moved to Halifax in 2014, Christine’s work in the healthcare industry kept her busy. But she still found the time to share her love for Jamaican culture and food by cooking for her friends.

“I would make jerk chicken and other Jamaican dishes for them. During the holidays, I would make Aunt Naomi’s cake to give away,” shares Christine. “They would say, ‘You should start selling your food!’”

Encouraged by her friends’ response, she set up booths at different farmers’ markets and events and was a big hit with the public. Christine eventually opened Brawta at their current 1567 Grafton Street location in 2019. Christine’s two daughters, Judy Ann and Dejhani, run the restaurant with their mother.

Since moving to Halifax, Christine’s holidays have looked a little different. Gatherings with extended family members became more intimate ones with her daughters and close friends. And since Brawta’s opening, the Allens’ lives have revolved around the restaurant, fulfilling catering orders on top of the regular demands of the restaurant. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the bountiful food on the holiday table.

On the Allens’ menu? Oxtail. Curry goat. Jerk chicken. Christine’s special ham. Escovitch fish. Rice and peas. Potato and egg salad. All of which are non-negotiables on their Christmas table. Cornbread and stuffing are both newly welcomed additions to their spread since moving to Halifax.

To wash it all down, they serve sorrel, a tart, spiced drink made from steeped hibiscus. Carrot-nog is also served, made with carrot juice, spices, and condensed milk. (Rum optional for both, but highly encouraged!)

And of course, the Allens’ celebration would not be complete without fruit cake. The cake, which they’ve now named the Naomi cake, stays true to the generations-old recipe of blending up rum-soaked dried fruits and mixing that into a cake batter flavoured with warm spices. The Naomi cake continues to be a Brawta best-seller during the holidays.

“We bring in our friends and staff together to celebrate here at Brawta,” says Christine. Save for the pandemic years and when they returned to Jamaica last year, their holiday celebrations have taken place at the restaurant. “A couple of years ago, we put out a mic and set up our TV screen and we had karaoke,” Christine says. “It was so much fun.”

Makes approximately 8 ice cream sandwiches.

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

225 grams unsalted butter, softened 625 grams white sugar 3 eggs 300 grams molasses 800 grams all-purpose flour 25 grams baking soda 8 grams dried ginger 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground cardamom

Instructions Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.

Feel free to enjoy the Spice Cookies on their own as well; they pair nicely with a warm cup of tea – perfect for a cozy afternoon by the fire!

1. In a stand mixer, or using a hand mixer, cream butter and sugar until light in colour.

2. Slowly add eggs, continuing to mix.

3. Add molasses, continuing to mix.

4. Sift all dry ingredients together and add to the wet ingredients until just mixed, being careful not to over mix.

5. Using a large ice cream scoop portion (approximately 4 oz), spoon the mixture into your hands and roll it into a ball shape.

6. Roll the ball in sugar to coat.

7. Place on baking sheet and press flat, using the palm of your hand.

8. Bake for 10-15 minutes until set. Remove from oven.

9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, transfer to wire rack and let cool completely.

10. Once cookies have cooled completely, assemble the cookie sandwiches. Scoop eggnog ice cream (or the ice cream of your choice) onto the bottom of one cookie, then sandwich another cookie on top of it. Gently press the top cookie down to make a compact sandwich.

11. Serve immediately, or wrap individually and freeze for later. If frozen, allow 5-10 minutes to soften slightly before serving.
